In November 2021, Microsoft announced that they would be ending their backward compatibility program after six years of adding games. Microsoft's reasoning what that they had “reached their limit” was such a halfhearted explanation for shutting the whole program down.

The issue is making the disc drive GD-ROM compatible. That was already a fairly tall order back then but it's pretty much impossible now. Unless the Backwards compatible DC titles are digital only but that defeats the purpose of using copies of your old games.

The only thing Microsoft should do is add a System on a Chip for the Xbox and the Xbox 360, just so that games that can't be emulated due to licensing reasons can still legally be played on these systems, but given the age of those two consoles, I don't know if Microsoft would be willing to go that route. And I hope that their next systems down the line offer the same compatibility that they have now, and not drop any of it. I don't know if the Xbox One is emulated, or if the Series X is simply a souped up Xbox One, but I hope that Microsoft maintains a 100% backwards compatibility rate for all of their future systems.

    • @AceNX
      @AceNX Год назад +53

Only thing I can think of is how expensive those chips can be. Prolly the reason they didn't do it before. (And yeah, I think the Series is just a more powerful One, the OS is pretty darn similar and One games run natively on Series)

The Xbox 360 used sheer will and emulation to emulate the Xbox. It's been described by those involved as the toughest thing they've ever done.
If it was possible then, I'm sure the Series X could play those games easily. Especially considering how it plays GCN games in developer mode.

    • @cyberredpandas1903
      @cyberredpandas1903 Год назад +27

The issue isn't that some games aren't emulatable due to licensing its just that Microsoft wants to use backwards compatibility to resell older games and so would need the licence hence why original Xbox on Xbox 360 supports half of the library whereas on Xbox One it doesn't.

Funny story: I got a 4GB 360 S Kinect bundle back in 2011 and for the longest time, I was confused when I couldn't access certain features or play original Xbox games due to "lacking a hard drive". When Xbox One came out along with the Games with Gold program, I had to keep asking my parents to buy flash drives to download the games as the store wouldn't allow you to purchase games when you didn't have the room to download it. After finding out about the attachable hard drives, I thought my console didn't support them as it didn't have the grey plate sticking out of it. Finally after watching this video, I took a closer look at my 360 and found a latch revealing the hard drive slot I've been wanting for all these years. Just got a hard drive on ebay and can't wait to play all these games I've been missing out on ever since my original Xbox died.

As someone who used to swap hard drives with friends all the time with my 250gb Xbox 360 S (which I still own to this day and it still works great), your comment made me chuckle lol. Yeah it blends in pretty well if you don't know it's there. It always puzzled me why Microsoft sold a 360 with no hard drive at all, considering that's about the time where they gave you the option to install your games to run faster, and as you said, many functionalities are only possible with a hard drive. It's also a bad spot for the hard drive slot because it accumulates an insane amount of dust inside. I opened mine up recently after the console sat for years on my entertainment center and the dust bunnies came spilling out with it lol

If you put a disc in your console it will ask you to "download an update", and it will download the game from the internet. The games won't be played from the original DVD.

That actually could be the route future Sony and Microsoft consoles take. PS5 Digital and Xbox Series S are smaller and cheaper to manufacture and buy than their disc-reading counterparts, to the point YEARS after release, the disc units are still a bitch to get ahold of. So making the next generation digital only, but with an option to buy a disc drive external peripheral [or even internal], and then only big budget games would get physical releases, while stuff like indies and games companies aren't 100% certain of sales in, would be digital only.
PCs have already been doing this for a while, optical discs are so rarely used for modern software that most PCs no longer come with a disc drive installed, which is still weird to me.

Microsoft didn't want to pay the DVD license fee for every single Xbox they produced back then, so they only paid for it for each set of IR receiver and remote they produced instead. Good video for the peripherals, different aspects about consoles/game region free or not, it's just internet based backwards compatibility and licenses that kind of suck about the Xbox BC I find. Still PGR1&2 was good in 2020 to play on a 360 as don't have a Xbox OG sadly currently to play all 4 games.
They already did the Impulse Triggers so going to the Share button I think made sense they saw no need for other things and eh no gyro is unfortunate but yeah the touchpad is skippable it's fine but it's just a big select button anyway because barely many Devs other than a handful of games/apps use it for touch swipes which those games are good but still.
Never thought about the region locking for Xbox One or the adaptor of Kinetic for Xbox One on PC but I forget the use of the adaptor for the One S/One X as easier to use the original Xbox One with it.
Never used the save memory cards or Xbox live vision camera but we're cool for the time, but I used the Xbox 360 E for the backwards compatibility then using ethernet and don't have the wifi adaptor for the Elite/older 360. Huh I use a third party controller on PC. I like the controller support on PC though. Dualshocks and others it's third party software. I think HD DVD is a cool option but yeah it's obsolete. Sad Kinetic 360 wasn't compatible on Xbox One Kinetic but oh well. But I think the 2013 dashboard was good for dual window use but eh no one clearly cases about that but me. But yeah media focus sigh.
But yeah the apps are awkward for the Xbox One just to do the Blu ray/DVD then CD support for another app but hey at least can use them. Also the program is over for Xbox backwards compatibility but hey they did what they could for licenses. But the updates were nice and have been. Otherwise with Bethesda and Activision/Blizzard would benefit more backwards compatibility titles.
Even if System Link was great backwards compatibility or just in general then just online or if splitscreen wasn't suitable (on the same TV then a screen per console I mean. I like splitscreen but won't deny System Link was a good idea and kept through) enough and to have separate TV use.
Otherwise Dreamcast for Xbox OG would have been cool but didn't happen.

With an adapter that doesn't exist the xbox 360 memory unit could be used in the og xbox, but the og xbox will format the drive to its own format. So it's not 100% cross compatible as each xbox will keep re-formatting them, but it does work if you need an og xbox memory unit but all you can find is x360 ones as they where far more common.
(The adapter would be a little more complex then just some wires, you need to regulate the og xbox 5v down to the 360's 3.3v but this is a super common regulator)

Now it is, sure. The Xbox 360 era was brutal though. Consoles had an enormous failure rate with red rings, DVD drives frequently stopped working, wireless controllers couldn't be plugged into PCs and needed a separate adapter that cost as much as the controller, and Xbox Live cost money (at time time, multiplayer on PC, Playstation Network, and whatever Nintendo had was free). DVD readers in particular were paired to the console, so you couldn't even fix them yourself without extra purpose-built tools. There was no reason for this other than Balmer-era Microsoft saying "screw you".

Playing games like halo on endless nights with my best friend and a few other buddies and then games like soul Calibur later on and the Sega GT games that came to Xbox shortly after the Dreamcast died was just such a great time to be alive and then the final game that I got for mine which was the best version of it you could play at the time, was none other than Grandtheft auto San Andreas and we had an Xbox with about 2000 hours worth of music tracks on it that would play custom soundtrack with the game soundtrack together at the same time(we had all the songs that were already in the game on the Xbox also) so that while you were playing that wonderful amazing for the time game, never once would you hear the same song twice in a single play session!!!

One of the things that I have learned about the backwards compatibility is, if it was an Xbox 360 game originally and was ported to the Xbox one then the 360 version is not necessarily going to be backwards compatible you'll have to play the Xbox One version, but then there's 360 games that were never converted over and those are going to be the ones that are going to be backwards compatible as 360 games vice versa.

Here are a few inaccuracies I noticed with this video.
    1. The 10gb Drive that came with some original xbox consoles didn't matter to most users because it was formatted as an 8gb drive for uniformity. This was purely a cost saving measure.
    2. The only difference between the Arcade and Core consoles was the hard drive. Neither had HDMI initially. The Elite was the first system with HDMI and then it filtered down to the others just for manufacturing simplicity.
    3. You can mix/match with one wifi and one corded xbox. However, the corded device would have to be plugged into the same network as your Wifi network.
    4. Xbox Series S is not on the same level of backwards compatible as Xbox One X. Xbox Series X has the One X enhancements. Unless a game is updated specifically for it, Xbox Series S only supports the base Xbox One VCR/S backwards compatibility.
    Interesting facts
    1. The reason MS went with a Dongle for DVD playback on the original system was because DVD playback required a license and in an effort to keep costs down they didn't want to pay that license for every console when the vast majority of users would never use the function. Additionally Sony would have received some of those royalties so it makes sense.
    2. MS went with HDDVD mostly for competitive advantage. Sony was backing Bluray and it would have required a license again with a lot of funds going to Sony.

Xbox also made a converter for you original (external) 360 hard drive, and the updated 360 s (internal) hard drive. so you could transfer all saved data from the clunky smaller storage drives onto the comparatively massive 250gb or 320gb internal hard drive of the 360 s (and e).
personally, i bought a 360 S around the time it came out, bundled with kinect (4gb version, non glossy matte) eventually bought the 250gb hard drive on sale. with the converter, i had like 3 or 4 different hard drives converted them all to the internal 250gb hard drive and still had like 175gb left.
to this day i still have the internal 250gb hard drive in my 360 s. never had a problem with the 360 s at all, or the hard drive. (i prefer the s over the later revision the e, simply because the E version removes certain ports including the kinect port).
on top of that when they released the cloud storage, i transferred all save data for BC games onto the cloud freeing up more space. while also bridging the gap from physical hard drive to the cloud on xbox one or either series s/x.
so you could push you save file back in the day from the launch 360 converted to internal 360 s or e, upload to the cloud, put the original 360 disc in the series x in 2023 and continue from the original save file.

Battlefront II doesn't work with system link with Series X or Xbox One if your OG Xbox doesn't have the DLC from OG Xbox Live as the versions don't match and they can't connect.

Excellent video man, I added a subscription just because you were the first person to talk about these things and how amazing it is to be an Xbox fan right now!!
    Limitations notwithstanding-

fun fact, x360 PAL and NTSC-J can both play Japanese and PAL DVDs but on Play Station playing PAL DVDs on NTSC-J and vice versa is blocked.

Yeah using a ethernet cable to connect to connect BF2 has never worked for me. I've tried it with the 360 to another 360, one to one, doesn't work.

Glad you brought that up as from what I've read there's some incompatibility with the standard version and the platinum hits version of the game and DLC must match on all copies. So I suppose it wasn't a great example as there's a lot of asterisks one needs to overcome ):

@@Shanmania from what I saw I'm also wondering it's because we didn't have that Ether net port. We tried plugging cables into each of the xboxes and that didn't work.
