Here's a list of items you can check for a safe track ride: - valve adjustment (easy for the front cyclinder with the radiator off) - new fork oil, and check the seals - condition of the front brake master cylinder, and change seals if necesary - dito to the rear brake master cylinder - condition of the brake pistons and seals - condition of the fuel injectors, clean if necesary - condition of the admision body, clean if necesary - rear sprocket bumpers?? check if there is any play - find the cause of radiator internal rust, check for any leaks in the system - if rust is inside the fuel tank, you can try electrolysis...and check the fuel pump condition and change it if necesary - check and change if necesary, fuel filter - finally, check all the moving parts for any abnormal movement (i.e. find any bad bearings all around) - ride safely, and enjoy the experience!
Rear sprocket bumpers are called 'cush drive rubbers' individually or just the cush drive for the whole assembly together. All good top advice ⬆️ btw. I just wanted to help your terminology to keep you right.
I'd also recommend electrolysis on that tank. It's simple, cheap, and works really well. There are youtube tutorials on it. Follow that up with a tank sealant.
just a quick tip run the vinegar with the distilled water 50/50mix through the whole system do not have to remove the radiator. the reason you do that is because i bet there is rust water were the water pump is. you will have to repeat the process several times to flush the rust and vinegar residue.
I used 8% malt vinegar for my R1 tank. Did the trick. Several flushes then neutralised with baking soda and water. Flushed with petrol and then filled with clean petrol. Then sprayed a load of WD40 in to create a mist in the tank and coat any remaining bare metal. No rusting has come back in 4 years.
Beautiful, I bought a 2000 sv650 s last year, garage kept, I had to clean the carb, spark plugs, changed rad fluid, gave her a oil change a new battery and she started and runs like brand new. I few minor scuffs but looks and runs like new. I get complements on it all the time. I paid 1,600 Canadian for it. Worth ever penny I spent. Gems these bikes are...
Wow we ALL won? No way. I guess you think we’re all idiots. And that we wouldn’t check the messages. That you replied to every comment on here and we all won the prize! Well I’ll tell you what, you can add a 1 to the end of your name. But you’re not HERORR. We are not all idiots. You are the idiot!
For the radiator, run it with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and vinegar for like 20 mins( till operating temps), rinse and repeat a few times. That should help with the radiator problem.
I’m kinda amazed you found so orange much rust in the cooling system, as far as I know there are very few steel/ferrous parts in the cooling circuit (I can only think of two off the top of my head). Your water necks in the cylinders near the thermostat might be truly rotted to nothing. Worth checking before you push it on track. Very nice bike!
That rubber ram tubing going into airbox take that out. That with exhaust and a power commander 5 and she runs proper ( better torque curve from ram delete alone) and the intake noise will gives goose bumps. Stay safe and enjoy buddy😊
@@HeroRR Yes that thing😁 I'm running a shortened and gutted LeoVince SBK Evo 2 can as IMO they sound the best staright from shelf and my whole exhaust from headers through have been Cerakoted (my profession) to allow for better oxygen scavenging from Cylinders and obviously to retain those EGTs so as to get them out the pipe quicker. Otherwise it must be said....I've had my sv from new in 2010 and since then many motorcycle have come and gone but not this one.
Outside price, wouldn't you be more interested in going the R7 route and having a better machine right off the bat? Anyway.... get your shock serviced, fork oil changed, updated seals. Or you can grab a ZX-10R shock for the rear and get some emulators or Ohlins cartriges for the forks. Exhaust options? Get a full-system M4. More breathing? Sprint filter. ECU flashed to eliminate restrictions (get your secondaries functioning optimally).
Do you have a) a torque wrench and b) some lockwire and a tool? You don't need to lockwire if you're not racing but I already noticed some on the SV so it could be you've got all important fasteners already drilled. In that case, torque wrench, then lockwire.
I see the bike still has stock exhaust. If you are considering replacing it, I would recommend checking with the track you intend to ride to see if they have sound restrictions. Here in the northeast there are two great tracks that have strict sound restrictions so I have left the stock exhaust on my SV.
I use this in the cooling system, in between race season, but not whilst on the track, distilled water only. Evapo-Rust Thermocure Cooling System Rust Remover & Flush Consider an aftermarket Rad! As others have mentioned check the Forks, have they got the correct springs, emulators and oil, for your riding style? The rear shock should be refreshed after 2 years or 30hrs use and also set to your riding style. Tyres and suspension are the key. You can have the fastest bike in the World, if it rides like a pig, then all the ponies are wasted!! 😉🏍💨😎
I'm really happy you got yourself a trackbike , this sv 650 is indeed track oriented... There are some issues though... To me, it looks like it was abandoned, the first time it drain the coolant... Actually what you found inside the radiator is that gluey thing when oil mixes with coolant 😕 So... although it looks like a track ready bike, you still have to take the engine apart and wash off all that grease bulb that is inside the engine block... that is a lot of work, but I really appreaciate your style of videos, so I guess there are a lot more to come... 👌
Absolutely get some new tires on there, those may be ok for the street but tire design has come a long way in 12 years if nothing else, I use Dunlop Q3 and Q4 on my SV650 on track. As a new track rider you will make mistakes and new sticky tires and correct pressure tires will save you, cheap insurance. I put a gsxr 600 rear wheel on my SV which allows wider and stickier 180 series tire. Also go to the Yamaha Champions school and take their on line course, the best $50 you will ever spend. Also your shock probably needs a gas charge.
What exhaust are you going to get for it? Full exhaust and tune makes a big difference. Was there any velocity stacks on the throttle bodies? It looked like there wasn't any.
Hey, i got a question. I kust bought my firdt bike a 790 duke and was wondering about daily/weekly maintenance since ill be riding it everyday to work. Wich is 30km 1 way trip. What should i be doing every day on after i get home and what weekly?
Hey Hero, can you tell us where you got that front wheel stand? That one looks solid and would make work on my 84' Interceptor 700 with no side stand way easier.
It might be easier to just replace that rusty tank with a clean one if you can find one. I would also check/ replace the front brake pads before you go on track. Sintered pads are the way to go.
I bought myself a SV 650 S after a while of keeping it, it started making this whining noise. I replace the fuel pump and the filter even though i replaced it the noise is back. Would anyone happen to know what the problem is? I bought the pump from Fuel Pump factory. When I took apart the fuel pump, there was lots of rust on it and inside the tank.
That rust is not just a radiator issue. Plus I do believe that there was a trace of oil in the original drainings. Running just water in the system will cause catastrophic damage to the cylinder liners. Those coolant additives are there for a reason. The previous owner seems to have been obvious to that fact. Whole system needs to be cleaned out. It’s possible that the damage is more extensive. And the water pump could be damaged by the residue circulating! This is why we don’t run engines until we’ve checked everything. That includes the coolant system. Every time I see a bike restoration video from the USA, I can pretty much guarantee that the ‘will it run?’ ethos will hold sway over good practice, common sense and preservation of mechanical integrity. Those god botherers with beards are the worst. I’m disappointed that you gave into the temptation. Yes, it’s not a Honda, so…, but this is probably the best Suzuki. Time will tell I guess.
looks to me there is literally nothing to do on this bike. chain was clean, some gunk in the radiator is no biggie, sparkplugs were ok, it started immediately... just go ride it.
It sat for 10+ years. I had no idea plugs were ok or anything like that. Only way to find out is to check it. And it’s a lot easier to check and replace things in my backyard vs the track :)

There is a cartridge style adjustable damper upgrade for those forks also.

for 2003 the engine itself is clean, great find for a cheap track bike. it's just the cooling system is a turndown for sitting in a long time.

CLR works for rads too doesn't it ? More pricey for sure tho compared to vinegar.
Do you know the brand of these fairings?
The rust in your cooling system could be because some circuits don't allow antifreeze to avoid slippery spills on track

try using some oxidation and rust remover for the radiator
also prob gonna need to engine flush the engine
U need an exhaust! Will sound better and shed some weight
