- PNW hiking - 3 Day/40 Mile Backpacking Trip in the Wallowa Mountains, Oregon July 2021. Sam and I hike the Eagle Cap Wilderness and bag the summit of Eagle Cap on this awesome Oregon backpacking trip.
We began out Eagle Cap Wilderness hike at the Wallowa Lake trailhead. We hike up West Fork Wallowa River to Sixmile Meadow, and enter Lake Basin. We hike past a chain of lakes, including Mirror Lake. We swim in moccasin Lake and then hike up to Glacier Pass.
We drop down to Glacier Lake and enjoy an incredible alpine lake view, with the reflection of Glacier Peak on the water. The next day, we take a non-standard route up to the summit of Eagle Cap, approaching from Glacier Lake. This route is off-trail, but a mostly class 2 hike to the top.
The summit of Eagle Cap offers excellent views of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and the Wallowa Mountains, but forest fire smoke is obscuring out views a bit today. We then hike down the trail from the summit of Eagle Cap to Horton Pass.
We hike down from Horton Pass into East Fork Eagle Creek. Then, we go off-trail for a short ways to connect to Frazier Pass. Then we enter Minam Valley, along Minam River. The hiking here is outstanding.
We continue our hike to Minam Lake, where we camp for the evening. The next day, we follow Lostine River down to the Two Pan Trailhead and get a hitch back to Wallowa Lake to end our hike.

An inspiring presentation of the world of the Wallowas, which are are a subsection of the Blues. The name is pronounced like *allow*, as I learned by being corrected by a local years ago.
I was just going to say it’s pronounced like allow is, I’m a local.
I went on a backpacking trip with my church here back in july. I remember there being lots of mosquitoes, and the water in the big lake was freezing
My wife and I just hiked to Aneroid on Juneteenth and spent the night getting snowed on. It was chilly and a good amount of work to posthole through the remaining snow on the trail; but the rewards of being out there easily outweigh the short term discomforts. Great post you guys.
Nobody makes me bleed my own blood! I read that…in a book.
Heading there in a few weeks. Then back up for ten days on a hunt. Was there last yr beautiful place
That water is crystal clear, incredible
Absolutely gorgeous hike. I might head here sometime this summer, so it was great to see the beauty of this area :D
WhAt an amazing trip!! Absolutely beautiful!!
My heart and soul, resides in alpine lakes and meadows... Incredible beauty here!
PS: For a second, I thought you were going to say that these river crossings remind you of the San Juans...
I know what you mean about your heart and soul feeling at home in these alpine environments! But... Too many live trees to be the San Juans :)
The Wallowas are one of my very favorite places to ride and hike, it was great to see them through your lens, thanks!
Bicycled that area in the 90's, the tram was a few dollars- hope it stays unspoiled.
I have just gotten one step closer to being the smartest man on Earth,Thanks for the video
It was worrisome to hear “off trail” and “shortcut” yet glad that worked out for you. I did a five day horse at Eagle Cap in 2022 and I enjoyed revisiting this amazing landscape via your video. Nice summit views!
I managed to watch this great video for about 7 minutes, unfortunately I have to go, but I will definitely finish it with coffee later.😇😇
Your videos are so epic man. I like how you go to places that I consider off the beaten path. Thank you for taking the time to do that all is involved in it. I hope in the next couple years to do one of your treks
Thanks David :) I'm rarely disappointed when taking the trail less traveled. Very cool, any particular hike you were thinking of doing?
@@SeekingLost your Nevada ones are the ones that drew me into your channel. No particular reason but there is something that draws my interest to that area. I have a buddy that lives in Las Vegas so I probably will take a day trip or two to one of your routes.
Never heard of Wallowa Mountains. Beautiful area!
It really is! The whole PNW area is one that I need to spend some more in.
That was awesome. Thank you!
Very nice! I love the Wallowas. I haven't backpacked it yet, but I did spend a couple of days camping and hiking in between the Wallowas and Hell's Canyon a few years back. Such beautiful country! Thanks for another epic adventure! - Mike
That is some impressive country there in between the Wallowas and hells Canyon. Had a bear and cubs in the road around there on my drive leaving this hike. Hope to fit this part of the country into a long hike someday
12:42 just incredible!!
That's gorgeous! It makes me want to go there minus the mosquitos. I'm getting ideas for a post graduation backpacking trip in August. Love the Sam Bernstein reference.
Those mosquitoes were awful! August should be better. Have you decided on where you're going for your trip this summer yet?
@@SeekingLost I have no idea yet. Things have gotten away from me. I was thinking Colorado.
Awesome video. Thanks!
Was just up in this area, 9/4, no issues with bugs at all. Two pan to mirror lake, with summit of Eagle Cap. Was a wonderful dayhike for me. I do plan to return and Glacier lake up and back as well. Thank you for sharing. Zero snow as of last week of july
Thanks for sharing. Glacier Lake is worth the trip, it was beautiful. I'm looking forward to getting back to the Wallowas again someday, but hopefully, with less bugs!
Great video! I live in Oregon and backpack the Eagle Caps every summer. The 2 mountains there is a dispute about which is the tallest are actually The Matterhorn and Sacajawea. Newer maps claim Sacajawea is a few feet taller
When I saw the date, Oregon, and the water, I knew mosquitoes would plague you. I have a 0.5oz head net (no longer made) that doesn't work for no see ums, but is great for mosquitoes. It always stays in my clothing bag, even in winter, less I forget it. If you ever hike the PCT in north Yosemite in late June-mid July, you'll never forget one again as you hike in a brown cloud of them. Consistently the worse swarms I've ever encountered.
Beautiful area you found. May have to visit my niece in Klamath Falls and take a side trip there.
Those mosquitoes were bad, up there with the worst I think. Headed to eastern Oregon in May to hike the Oregon Desert Trail, hope the skeeters are less out there. Lots of ticks though, I hear.
Not too bad lol. I have been to the Wallowas many times, and the lakes and rivers are ice water. You guys must like it cold lol!
I love the Wallowa mountains! Hike to the top of Eagle Cap one day. Great hike and view.
Edit…..I just got to the part where you go to the top of Eagle Cap. There ya go!
Oh yeah that lake was frigid! I wouldn't have jumped in by myself, Sam convinced me on this one. Love the Wallows. Can't wait to get back and see more of it
WOW spectacular - thanks for showing I gotta I gotta go -and see that wilderness. A bit different from midwest eh? - makes us appreciate it so much more.... (an x Wisconsin'r)
a bit of a drive from Portland but gotta fit er in.
Miss the vids man!! Love this hike.
Thanks Man! This was a good one. Really awesome part of the country. Should have some new videos up in the next few weeks, from your neck of the woods... err, desert... last fall's Mojave-Sonoran Trail hike
@@SeekingLost Never really thought about hiking Oregon but this has changed my mind and yes I’m looking forward to watching you struggle for water lol 😂. Also last thing do you ever plan on hiking in Utah?
@@donovanchildress6963 haha thanks, i go pretty thirsty for a while on that one! Yeah Utah is high on the list. I wanted to save the Hayduke for a segment of a larger route i had planned, but at this rate i ought to just go out and do the hayduke as is. Or perhaps, an az ut id thru hike, border to border. That one sounds very cool to me
What are you using for a camera, the video is truly amazing!
Thank you! This was filmed with a Gopro 8
Maybe the Bernstein's will sponsor! 🤣 Pry not after that prank call comment 😜 thnx for the walk and the veiws today! As always hike hard! Stay safe! (Your definition of safe 👍) Love life! ✌️
I've backpacked and day hiked a lot in the Eaglecap wildernesses while I lived in nearby Walla Walla Washington
You were wanting some of that dry Mosquito free Nevada terrain by the end of that one .
Nevada had some pretty bad bugs at times, but usually not Mosquitoes. We did head to Nevada about a week after this, mostly to get away from the forest fire smoke. Less mosquitoes was a bonus though!
Anyone know about RAZZ Lake? I never would ever probably even have seen it if a friend had not located some mention of it somewhere.
Locating it involves hiking the standard trail south of Wallowa Lake & after a few miles heading west on an uphill trail (sorry I cannot be more specific) & negotiating a series of switchbacks until somehow spotting a small sign for the lake (from a necessary map) & then heading north OFF TRAIL for about 15-20 minutes & then reaching this small but scenic glacial lake which became our base camp for a couple days. I am not sure of the elevation of Razz Lake (perhaps comparable with ICE LAKE) but after testing the water temperature decided swimming wasn’t an option. We were there in 1972 so maybe the off trail now has one & I rather doubt it but who knows. Maybe the little sign to the lake is gone but a map should locate it & the switchback trail is pretty close to the lake as I mentioned. On the same trip we also hiked up the Matterhorn which, I believe, is the highest peak in the Wallowas, higher than Eagle Cap by a few hundred feet & just shy of 10,000 feet so cautious HIKING as opposed to actual CLIMBING is perhaps still be possible. It easing 1972 anyway.
The entire Wallowas, the lake, & Joseph are a retirement dream if ever a Lotto win comes my way.
stunninng. What elevations was that entire trip?
You’re pronouncing Wallawa incorrectly. Wuh-LAH-wuh is the correct.
I am definitely known for mispronouncing names and places. I usually let people correct me, and then I learn! Thanks :)
I was raised in Joseph....the word Wallowa is Nez Perce and means 'fish trap'.... it is pronounced Wuhl ow ah...hikes and horse back all over those mountains growing up. I'm 72 now and can tell you it has changed a lot! We used to slide down a glacier on plastic bags and get ice cream head ... but what a great way to cool off after a hot summer hike!
Can’t believe you don’t have water sandals for water crossings. 40 miles in soak and wet trail runners sounds awful especially with snow on the mountains still.
Mosquitos Suck!
There, I said it.
Beautiful out there i just ready a scary story on youtube about it
Needs more metal. 🤘
Don’t be a greenhorn, say Wall-ow [as in how, not low]-a [as in us,] Wallowa.
Not Wallua..WallOWA. Just like Oregun not OrEgOn.
A little touchy, are ya?
Awesome footage.
Should probably learn correct pronunciation before making video😬
Then i would never make any videos! Haha
Learn how to say Wallowa properly.
So many bagels! 🥯🥯🥯 I have a map and have been meaning to hike the Wallowas. Only three and a halfish hours from home in Boise. Eastern Oregon is cool.
Sam is the bagel king! I'm packing out more bagels now myself as a result of us hiking together. Definitely get out there to the Wallowas when you can. I really like this range and can't wait to come back. I hope to explore more of eastern Oregon this year, if I do the Oregon Desert Trail... thinking about doing it in May.
