  • Video about the Inergy Kodiak lithium solar generator - how to 'reset' it as well as how to 'expand' it, including some comments on the very best battery to use for expanding the system.
    Sorry about so much movement in the video. I will try to improve my camera work.

    Thank you for keeping this video up. I've been using my Kodiak for about a year and a half. I was at about 90% and all of sudden, nothing. Being out of warranty, I figured I would have to open it up and see if there was a breaker or fuse. Saw your video gave it try the next day, started working as quietly as it stopped. I usually charge by solar or cigarette lighter, it's been so long I forgot what the power brick looked like. Thanks

    And the answer is ... "Thank you for contacting Inergy. Great question! One of the reasons that the Kodiak may need to be reset is due to being over-discharged. If that is the case, then plugging the wall charger into the wall will give the Kodiak the power boost that it needs to reset. However, if that is what is needed, but no power outlet are available or you are off grid, we have a reset cable that can be used in combination with a solar panel charge source or any other high current charge source to reset the Kodiak out of safety mode."

    I got off the phone with tech support earlier today at Inergy. In the user manual it says to insert the wall plug charger into the base light port for 10 seconds to reset your system if you accidentally ran your batteries too low. If you tried that and then your system "still" won't charge, do the same thing but, leave your charger in the light port (instead of for 10 -seconds) for 10 - 20 minutes. This will actually charge your battery enough to get it working again and willing to take a regular charge as usual. I tried this, charged it for 20 minutes and it's now working great. If for some reason that didn't work for you either, let the folks at Inergy know and they will mail you a special wire that will plug into the base light port AND the solar input port AND your wall charger at the same time, which after charging for a bit, should get you up and running. Hope this helps. I'm writing it down here because I couldn't find this information anywhere in the Internet.

    Brian.. keep the videos coming! I had the same thing happened to mine just lastweek..lol.. I almost had a heart attack when it never came on (especially because how costly the Kodiak is). I just got my 400 watts inverter and using it to run my smaller alliances. This reduces the usage instead of using the more powerful inverter that's built in.

    Note to anyone watching this. When he talks about the options for batteries for expanding the unit, he mentions lithium.
    It says right in the manual that you can not use Lithium Batteries to expand the unit, so no, they are NOT an option.
    Because NO, it does NOT have the electronics in it to determine what kind of battery it is, which is why you can NOT use Lithium. It has something to do with the batteries will fight or over ride each other....the battery management systems (BMS) won't be compatible etc....you can call Inergy and ask them, I don't know all the details of what will happen, but I DO know you can't use Lithium for expansion.

    Wow my Inergy Apex was 1 yr 3 months old when one day it wouldn’t turn on. I called tech support. They said it’s most likely a reset button issue. They mailed me a reset connector cord. After I received it I called tech support and asked how to use it. They said plug 1 end into the Power inlet then the other end into the top barrel port. Then plug the power brick into a wall outlet and the other end into the bottom barrel port. That got it going again but it doesn’t last long. I have to repeat this every time I want to use it. Sometimes it shuts off randomly when I’m using it. Warranty is up so I don’t want to ship it back. I wish someone would make a video on how to fix this problem.

    I live up north of the 49th and its gets really cold, all of our car batteries or should say mostly are flooded lead acid batteries. If a lead acid battery is fully charged, they will not freeze. Only if they become discharged will they freeze and usually bust apart. My solar system is subjected to freezing temps 6 months of the year and as long as the battery are somewhat full charged, they have not frozen yet, been 5 years now

      I just called them. They told me that they don't recommend it because they can't guarantee everything would be ok on the expanded lithium battery being used. There are a huge range of Lithium batteries and some are low quality. I tried to pry more and ask specifically about trying to add Battleborn (with smart charging) and they would not say yes on any lithium battery. Survivalist, are you still running your Lithium expansion batteries; any issues over the past couple years?

  • @bryceb8331

    Firefly makes the best AGM battery out there. You can discharge it more than 80%. Much more similar to a lithium, though still and AGM. Uses carbon foam plate instead of lead. Charges faster too. I've got one and Kodiak and going to give it a try expanding.

    Have you ever left a car outside or in an unheated garage at below freezing temperatures? The freezing temperature of the electrolyte in a fully charged battery is -92º F (-69º C). At a 40% state of charge, electrolyte will freeze if the temperature reaches approximately 16º F (-9º C). Wouldn’t it be simpler to hook up a $20 battery maintainer than to heat the storage area where you’re storing a flooded battery?
    Appreciate the information about the Kodak but you lost a lot of credibility with that statement about freezing batteries.

    Minor clarification. Your AGM battery has 1200 watts, not 1000. Watts = Volts (12) x Amps (100). Additionally, unlike the Yeti, the Kodiak has very efficiency when using solar input. The Kodiak is a great unit.

  • @OH8STN

    Sucker born every day.
    Thanks for sharing this video but honestly, inergy kodiak hopes you don't understand what's inside. The battery management system inside that solar generator put the system in low voltage disconnect because you ran the power down to low. The BMS or battery management system not they're engineers is designed to reset when power is applied to the output. This is not to feature unique to the Kodiak. Almost every BMS work this way. I certainly like the packaging of the Kodiak. Nevertheless, it is very much overpriced.

      If you take care of it , keep it charged up, top it off often, and don't run it down past half charge it should last 4 or 5 years, maybe longer, I use a battery minder to keep mine topped off and desulfated, buy a battery minder if you don't have one.

      If you top off lead acid batteries everday you get 8 years or more out of it. But really depends on the quality also. These 130 dollar batteries won't get 8 years. 3 at most even if you take care of it well. The really good quality ones last 10 to 15 years but expensive. But still less than lithiums. Oh and also the other important factor is temperature. If in the wrong temp range the battery can die in less than a few months. If you want quality lead acid batteries you have to get the industrial grade. These cheap batteries on amazon are usually refurbished and will give you 3 years at most or even less.

    Do you happen to know why Kodiak says you can only have 600w of solar panels hooked up to this, when they say it has a 1500w inverter inside? I've asked several places, but no one has a decent answer. As to best battery question: I bought a VMAX on Amazon. It seemed to best value. Ah/dollar

    • @testuser3167
      @testuser3167 7 лет назад +1

      That's because while the unit has a 1500 watt inverter (output only), its charge controller (input only) is rated @ 600 watts.

  • @testuser3167
    @testuser3167 7 лет назад

    Either the manual is wrong, or the "expansion port" isn't really an expansion port. The manual claims (pg. 8) that it's an input port, and I think you'll find that you can't actually charge any external batteries that are connected to it, but you can charge the internal battery with an external 12 volt connection...
    On a different note, could you please check the voltage at those terminals & the 12 volt DC outlets after the unit is fully charged? All the published specs are saying that the internal battery is a LiNiMnCo battery, but they also claim that it is rated as 90 Ah & 12.6 Vdc, but the 12.6 Vdc part doesn't match what a 4-cell LiNiMnCo battery should be producing, because those are nominally @ 3.65 Vdc/cell when charged, vs 3.2 Vdc/cell for a LiFePO4 lithium battery.
