One thing about Nega-Scott, a nega-character isn't the evil version, it's the opposite version. Nega-characters are usually of heroes, so they default to villains, but Scott isn't a hero or a villain, he's just kind of an asshole - so Nega-Scott is just kind of a cool dude.

The way I take "self-respect" in this context is "respecting yourself enough to care what other people think about you & acting accordingly." In the beginning of the movie, all Scott's friends and family lowkey thought he was a creep and loser, but he didn't really care enough about how he was perceived by others to not act exactly like... well... a creep and loser. Fighting Gideon for love/Ramona was a continuation of his old petty & self-interested way of doing things, standing up to an evil a-hole because he was personally invested in getting his girlfriend back from the guy. Conversely, fighting Gideon for himself was Scott wanting to fight as a better person & to become a better person, standing up to an evil a-hole because it was the right thing to do. And he only came about wanting to do that because he finally realized he didn't like the way the people around him viewed him anymore (Ramona seeing him as an evil-ex in waiting, his roommate wanting him to finally move out, his band finally kicking him out, Knives & Ramona's obvious hurt regarding how he treated them), hence "self-respect aka caring how your actions make other people view you." At least that's what I'm going with...

"Is it weird that I'm not rooting for him at all?" NOPE, it's 100% normal and correct! Scott is our protagonist, but he's also a selfish, short-sighted asshole who needs to do some MAJOR soul-searching and growing up before he's worthy of being rooted for. In many ways, this movie is the story of how Scott gains enough perspective and empathy to realize that he's been the "bad guy" for a while.

That's why I'm looking forward to the Netflix adaptation. As much as I like this movie, Scott's arc is MUCH more clear in the books. Ramona's too, in fact.

This is definitely one of Edgar Wright's best films. The music and editing is top notch. The cast is having a blast. And the fact that this is getting an animated show with most of the cast is phenomenal.

A bit late to comment (I just got off to watching the animated show so I stumbled here), but yeah, the movie doesn't focus as well on character development as the comics did. Like, the fights between Roxie and the twins, those are the full book 4 and 5, respectively, but here it's reduced to the fights only! So much extra stuff is happening in those two books that got skipped here. Also, Scott initially gets the Power of Love in book 4, during the fight with Roxie, and eventually get the Power of Understanding when faced off against Gideon... He also deals with Nega-Scott before dealing with Gideon, not after, so that's his main self-reflection moment.
So, yeah, the comics are better than the movie, they are worth a read! And also, the new animated show, pretty awesome, but in a very unique way! :)

The context is that he was trampled by Envy, who is basically a goddess, so he became a lazy coward and dates the exact opposite of her: A girl too naive to expect anything from him. And he accepts the contempt of others for dating Knives because it fits his self-loathing. He's comfortable being low and thought less of. But then he runs into another Envy-caliber goddess, and things get complicated. It's only after confronting aspects of himself in the Evil Ex fights that he can recognize what kind of person he's been. That's the self-respect in question: It's accepting reality and moving forward. That's not a "message," it's just the story.

The ending is honestly the least to be worried about, the Comics, the game, and the new Netflix series have fairly different stories, all they have in common is the characters, relationships, and themes. The story may be mostly the same but will have much more time to develop (like in the Comics) im very excited for it.

So fun fact about this movie: it was being made as the comic was. The story wasn’t finished which is why the ending in the comic is very different than the movie despite the writer helping make the movie. I would definitely recommend checking the anime out. They seem to be staying faithful while adding in touches that help the overall story. The ending in the comic is much better. Not only does everyone get a little send off and resolution to their characters but it also puts a lot more emphasis on Scott coming to terms with how he’s not all that great a dude.

So this was more a movie based off of an incomplete comic series adapted into a video game and is going to be adapted into an animated series with the same cast as the movie.
And it's a lowkey blockbuster cast, the sixth and last book was still in a skeleton so the story isn't entirely fit to the conclusion mind you and of course they had to shorten it down, but it was still fun, edited and framed really well when you see the finer details (like the constant X and 0s around Scott since his shitty nature means he's at risk of being another evil ex) and the normal Edgar Wright directing choices. Kieran Culkin was the best performance in my opinion, he was great as Wallace

What I like about the story (and this is more clear in the comics) is that everyone, "good" or "evil", is a bit of a jerk. We've all got flaws that make us do jerky things even if unintentional, and the only way to overcome those is to realize it and own up to it.
This is also why it kinda annoys me that all anyone ever talks about is Scott being a jerk. Not that he doesn't deserve it, but I think it gets in the way of the message.

    Love this movie so much!
I don't think Scott really dated knives for attraction purposes, but just because she was "easy" (he didn't need to try too hard to impress her, unlike Envy who cheated/dumped him even though he did try and keep her happy) Knives was just there to make him feel better about himself. That being said, he definitely didn't take knives feelings seriously which sucks but he eventually grows and finally asks "what about you?" at the end of the movie instead of avoiding her like he did numerous times before. Also its all good to not wanna root for Scott at the beginning of the movie, because he is a creep, but he some how ends up less creepy than the 7 evil ex boy friends (ex's)
Actually If I'm remembering correctly, the original ending was Scott did eventually end up with Knives and the fans didn't like it (also she was 17 sooooo.) The writer did change it to him being with Remona in the end since she was the reason he went on this journey for, again IDK I haven't read the comics in a long time. ¯\(°_o)/¯
The comic does character growth much better and the movie leaves out a bunch of other crazy stuff Scott gets into, so hopefully the anime will keep those moments in when it releases, which I cant wait for you to react to ( If you are that is, do what you want ). But all in all, this is easily one of my favourite movies and I'm so happy to see you reacted to it. ❤

In the original comics he ends up with Ramona. The finale of the comics is *very* different, very much wrapped up around Ramona's story and Knives is out of the picture long before that point.
They did film an alternate ending for the movie where he ends up with Knives which kind of works. I don't know that it was ever planned to be the real/original ending and not just something they tested with audiences.

You are right to not want to root for Scott. Sure, he is our protagonist but he is an asshole. In the comic he and Ramona both acknowledge this about themselves and grow into better people. but overall im glad you liked this movie! I remember when this movie first came out, i went into it blind (since my so called high school friends wanted to go see since they knew about the comics and just invited me as a favor to my ex lol) but absolutely loved it and thought of it as a masterpiece. Super excited for the anime coming out soon! i hope you react to the anime as well! Love your work!

I loved this movie! The style of it really got me, the soundtrack, and how things burst out in anime video game effects and cool fight scenes. To me it was obvious from the start this wasn't a movie where you really take the plot seriously. Comic is of course better, because there's seven volumes and this is piecemeal. While I LOVED the Battle of the Bands, things jumped around so I just sat back and enjoyed the ride and was very entertained.
