Nina Simone, Good Bait, piano solo version

  • From Nina Simone´s highly acclaimed 1958 debut album "Jazz As Played in an Exclusive Side Street Club" (Little Girl Blue)
The original track is played by Nina Simone on piano, Jimmy Bond on bass, and Tootie Heath on drums.
It's amazing to hear what the 24 year old Nina Simone did with the melody, originally penned by Tadd Dameron. The astonishing arrangement she has made of this piece shows her classical trained piano skills and her improvisation talent as well.
I have made a piano solo version of this piece, so you won't miss the bass and drums (I hope!).

Thank you for your comment! It´s a difficult piece, with no score, so it takes a lot of time to learn it, but it´s playable on your own!

Thanks! Yes, it's a great arrangement by Nina Simone, very hard to play yourself. I am fairly satisfied with this one, I should make another, better one, but that's very hard to do, so, haha, I will leave it with this upload, for now :-)
Kind regards, greetings from the Netherlands, Simon 🎹

This song is by far my favourite from Nina's repertoire. I've had in every single playlist for the road. As this song popped up this morning on my way to work, I wondered if there are any other variants out there. So I looked for more.
And am I glad I did! Loved this.

Thank you! Little late I'm sorry, I see i missed a lot of comments here, but thanks again. Nina's version is impeccable indeed, what a super pianist she was! It was a LOT of work to play this piece, because as you can read elsewhere in the comments, there is no score, and it it very complex to play, especially the invention-part and the climax, but rewarding if you ultimately can, also as a concert piece. Unfortunately I still made a lot of mistakes here and there in this rendition, but it was, at that time, the best I could do in only one take. Wonderful immaculate debut recording by Nina, also LOVE on that LP her version of You Never Walk Alone !
      Greetings from the Netherlands! Simon

@@simonvanthoff Oh, but that is the very beauty of it! No score! Whenever I go searching for covers, I'm not looking for perfect renditions. Quite the contrary. I seek out people who were inspired by the greats. I want to see how musical history has shaped them, what they understood from it, how they carry it forward and how much sould they poured out in their tribute.

I'm fairly satisfied with this modest and simple home-recording...I could maybe do better, but it's very hard to make a take of this complicated piece with which you are reasonably happy with 🫣🥺
Thanks again, kind regards, from the Netherlands! Simon 🎹

Hello! well, I haven't made a score; it's really a lot of work to do! I just listened to true piano again, his score is very good. What you probably miss is the fact that it's not a human being who's playing it, but a computer...that's why it's sounds so liveless...I would advise you to buy his score, study it thoroughly and make just a few adjustments like I have done to make it sound more pianistic. But really, trust me, his score is really good, very well done; it spares you A LOT of time!

@olekike Thank you! The Crave is a nice piece, I will look it up.
I like your video's on your channel; you have a natural technic and suple hands/wrists as far as I can see from here. But don't you think you will really improve your technic and playing when you perform and practice on an acoustic piano? I know this wil really level up your possibilities!

Yes, actually I think you ar right. I played it a long time ago, and if I would study it now again, I would try to put more subtlety in it. But it's a very hard piece, lots of work, nowadays I miss the time and concentration to finetune it again, and rework on it even more meticulously. But who knows, one day, a re-take! :-)

@@gisellekirby3352 ow haha! Well, in both cases, thanks! :) and yes, I play it, becáuse it's just solo (without drums & bass), perhaps a little more dynamically /firey than the fabulous original recording by Nina. But still, having control is one the hardest things in playing piano, so, well, who knows, indeed one day make another recording, with the iPad (instead of the crappy little hand-held-camera I had back then :-)
      Kind regards, Simon 🎹💪🏻

Jéssica Oliveira thank you Jéssica ! It was indeed a LOT of work to play this by ear, and also to figure it out technically to manage it, mainly because there is no score, so you have to listen to EVERY SECOND of the original recording very very very carefully (and I do still make a lot of mistakes in this rendition! :-(( and because Nina's version is impeccable, AND because I don't have a drum and bass player to do al the rhytm n bass parts, and thus helps you to be the "driving engine" so to speak at especially the climax.
But if you really spend a lot of time to figure it out, second by second, minute by minute, and second by second again, with your own technical abilities in mind, using your own playing style here and there, and figure out technically how to play the more complex parts (the invention-part especially, and the climax specifically) then it is indeed very rewarding to play, also in concerts.
But, again, (I cannot emphasise it enough!) give yourself permission to study and puzzle with it, second by second, minute by minute, and second by second again, for lots and lots and lots, and lots, of hours on end.
And, all the while, don't forget to ENJOY the immaculate Nina version!! :-)
Good luck! And greetings from the Netherlands! Simon
