Guys: the nickname GOAT refers to him being Australia's best off-spinner ever. Not of any off-spinner of all time (clearly Murali). Calm down.
Also, I'm of the humble opinion that he's the best in the world right now, better than Ashwin who gets the majority of his wickets at home on spin-friendly pitches whereas Lyon plays more in Australian conditions that favour pace bowlers more than spinners.
Absolutely, he took more wickets than Ashwin in the last 3 border gavaskar trophy.
Actually there is one more factor that matters most......and only those can understand who knows very fine technicalities of game........comings to the point......imagine a pitch from one end starc( left arm coming fromround the wicket ) and other end Cummins( right arm over the wicket) now then specially starc bowler long spell and coming into day 3-4 ....it creates rough by the spikes......and then when lyon come into bowl to right handed batsman from the opposite end of starc.......due to starc's spikes it creates a nice rough outside the off stump of right handed batsman........and with that rough it's a lot easier for an off spinner to use that rough...........point is of there is left arm fast bowler who bowls from round the wicket.....it really helps the off spinner..........in ashwin's case there is no left arm bowler in Indian team so he don't get the kind of rough that lyon gets................
Best to understand draw pitch on paper and then mark left right on both ends and then mark from which end left arm from round the wicket bowler and then mark his foot holes then from opposite side bring an off spinner from over the wicket you will understand. ....

Nathan Lyon is definitely their key player, the concept and logic behind that is finding a good spinner in SENA is really a tough job, also you have to be too good to perform on the pitches which don't offer too much help to the spinners so yeah he is definitely crucial to the side.
Keeping aside the wickets Lyon takes in every condition, he creates pressure on the batsman by bowling tight lines and not giving much away, making it easier for the other bowlers to take wickets.
Him talking to everyone on the field is a part of his charm but it also puts a little bit of pressure on the batting side and it’s so funny and amazing
After murali he is the best spinner because indian off spinners take wickets only in sub continent but "garry" everywhere
