I am not sure that there are many pianists - classical or popular - whose playing could stand up to that drumming performance! Elton john has always been hard on his keyboards but goodness me he needed to be on that occasion!
I came to the Madman Across the Water album late. But I used to listen to it like I'd listen to a Beethoven Symphony. It needed to be listened to. Madman Across the Water was fabulous, but this is the song that reached somewhere deep inside. And this is an exceptional performance of it.

Cooper is one fine percussionist !

  • @GamingRevenant
    @GamingRevenant 2 года назад +4

It's unbelievable how powerful the song is. The lyrics and the score melt together so perfectly, it's almost beyond comprehension. But what's perhaps the most jarring about the song as a whole, is that it's just sitting there between all the more popular songs of Madman Across the Water. Literally *nobody* except true Elton John fans know about it. This has even been confirmed by Elton himself, as most people stand there flabbergasted when this is being played live, never having heard it before. I think the studio version remains the most powerful when listening through an audio system, but live (like really being there) with the performance as seen here must give anyone the chills.

      Charles,
Bernie had/has a great fascination with the old west and all things cowboys and Indians etc....
Notice, Tumbleweed connection, Don't shoot me I'm only the Piano Player, Captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy, etc.
All are "Western" themes. I'm kinda surprised he didn't write for more C/W artists...
this is probably what c/w would or should sound like if they had the talent of Bernie and Elton..

Which is really such a specific period in time and a fairly specific location in the country. It shows beautifully through this song and others (rotten peaches, Texan love song, basically all of tumbleweed connection)

As I awoke this evening with the smell of wood smoke clinging
Like a gentle cobweb hanging upon a painted tepee
Oh I went to see my chieftain with my warlance and my woman
For he told us that the yellow moon would very soon be leaving
    This I can't believe I said, I can't believe our warlord's dead
Oh he would not leave the chosen ones to the buzzards and the soldiers guns
Oh great father of the Iroquois ever since I was young
I've read the writing of the smoke and breast fed on the sound of drums
I've learned to hurl the tomahawk and ride a painted pony wild
To run the gauntlet of the Sioux, to make a chieftain's daughter mine
And now you ask that I should watch
The red man's race be slowly crushed
What kind of words are these to hear
From Yellow Dog whom white man fears
I take only what is mine Lord, my pony, my squaw, and my child
I can't stay to see you die, along with my tribe's pride
I go to search for the yellow moon and the fathers of our sons
Where the red sun sinks in the hills of gold and the healing waters run
Trampling down the prairie rose, leaving hoof tracks in the sand
Those who wish to follow me, I welcome with my hands
I heard from passing renegades Geronimo was dead
He'd been laying down his weapons when they filled him full of lead
Now there seems no reason why I should carry on
In this land that once was my land I can't find a home
It's lonely and it's quiet and the horse soldiers are coming
And I think it's time I strung my bow and ceased my senseless running
For soon I'll find the yellow moon along with my loved ones
Where the buffaloes graze in clover fields without the sound of guns
And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of gold
And peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole

It's a Tambourine. Which is also the title of one of the songs in Elton's new album "Wonderful Crazy Night."

    Indian Sunset
    Elton John
As I awoke the evening with the smell of woodsmoke clinging.
Like a gentle cobweb hanging upon a painted teepee.
Oh I wen to see my chieftain with my war lance and my woman.
For he told us that the yellow moon would very soon me leaving.
    This I can't believe I said, I can't believe our Warlord'sdead.
Oh, he would not leave the chose ones to the buzzards and thesoldiers guns.
Oh, great father of the Iroquois ever since I was young,
I've read the writing of the smoke and breast-fed on the sound ofdrums.
I've learned to hurl the tomahawk and ride a painted pony wild.
To run the gauntlet of the Sioux, to make a chieftain's daughtermine.
And now you ask that I should watch the red man's race be slowlycrushed!
What kind of words are these to hear from Yellow Dog, whom thewhite man fears?
I take only what is mine Lord, my pony, my squaw, and my child.
I can't stay to see you die along with my tribe's pride.
I got to search for the yellow moon and the Fathers of oursons,
Where the red sun sinks in the hills of gold, and the healingwaters run.
Trampling down the prairie rose, leaving hoof tracks in thesand.
Those who wish to follow me, I welcome with my hands.
I heard from passing renegades Geronimo was dead,
He'd been laying down his weapons when they filled him full oflead.
Now there seems no reason why I should carry on,
In this land that once was my land, I can't find a home.
It's lonely and it's quiet and the horse soldiers are coming,
And I think it's time I strung my bow and ceased my senselessrunning.
For soon I'll find the yellow moon, along with my loved ones.
Where the buffaloes graze in clover fields without the sound ofguns.
And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of gold
And peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole.
