We’ve got our hands on the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser, so we’re taking it to its natural habitat… An off-road course!
But of course, it’s not on its own. We’ve brought along two of its key off-road competitors - the Land Rover Defender and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon! But is the Land Cruiser still one of the toughest cars around?
Well to find out, we’re putting the three cars through a series of challenges. From an off-road drag race through to rock crawling, we’re about to see which of these three is the must-have off-roader.
On the face of it, the Land Cruiser may be at a disadvantage. Not only is it the heaviest car here, at 2,520kg, but it also only produces 205hp and is on all-terrain tyres! In comparison, the Defender weighs 2,361kg, produces 300hp, and is on mud tyres. Also, the Jeep is the lightest car here at 2,028kg, puts down 272hp, and is also on mud tyres.
So can the Land Cruiser upset the odds and snatch the win? You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

The Land Rover also had AT (BFG), the only one with MT was the Jeep.
Toyota had Yokohama Geolandar's AT, they don't look aggressive but they're pretty good.

Had 2 Toyotas and lots of kilometres in them. Just will not break down. Boring to drive but great cars.
Not really, they only do it for MPG purposes. In the states, any serious off-roader changes tires to an AT almost immediately.

The Toyota win with stock tyres and tyres are one of the most important parts of a car. Toyota is simply the Best choice here.
I would argue they are the most important part. Eg. when building a car from scratch, a great route is to first consider the wheel, tyre and brake dimensions you want as well as the compound suited to your needs. Then you can fab the body and its performance around that. You will always be limited by your tyre options.

The first race should have gone to the Defender, it obviously did it faster but Andy had a delayed start. My guess is, he thought the race started when Graham's hands reached the bottom of the gesture (when they go by the second the hands begin to move)

Defender did have a late start but it still ran a slower time than the lc

The most impressive part to me is that after this jump, the Defender didn't go into limp mode or had some defects/warning lights.

Rubicon clearly won the 13:50 challenge. LC chose a different line with less level/diagonal changes obviously, idk why they put the Rubicon 2nd, Sam just plowed in the center line being confident it will make it no sweat. IMO Rubicon 1st, LC 2nd, Defender 3rd just because it has less suspension articulation.
Watch again, LC walked it like it was in the park. At first I knew jeep is winning then saw how LC got it easier given the fact that it’s wheel base is longer than jeep.

@ if you watch again, when Mat going down there are treads which took that side first. To put that aside, those puddles were few inches actually. Wasn’t all that deep.
However everyone can see as they think. To be fair, that’s the chance for a jeep to prove itself and it shouldn’t be an excuse because it’s built specifically for that. The old Willy jeep wouldn’t have an issue there though.

Without even watching the video, I would choose Toyota-the brand of quality, reliability, and all-wheel drive. Even if I walked into a supermarket and saw a canned tuna with a Toyota logo on it, I would buy it without hesitation.

There are plenty of these that they've already made, but just in case you don't know, this isn't a good comparison at all. They are usually taking different lines on different parts of the hill, and the different drivers are performing differently on the challenges where they have to take the same line, so it's not very scientific at all. It's certainly a fun video to watch, but if you want to get down to the nitty gritty and find objectively which vehicle is best, regardless of driver skill and ability, then don't take these results into your consideration because they aren't accurate.
Wow, the Jeep really has great articulation. Given its simplicity, probably the one I'd want off road.
Yep it's the only one with solid axles front and rear. You should see what happens when you disconnect the sway bars it really articulate like crazy

You probably wouldn't want it as a car in general. They are well known for being unreliable and will probably leave you stranded while off-roading. The Land Cruiser will always be the best pick for me.

I'd get the Defender if I'd be in the city 70% of the time. The Wrangler if I'd be at the beach 70% of the time because of the removable top. And the Land Cruiser non-hybrid available in many other markets outside the US, if I'd be on the road 30%+ of the time. Or ignore all 3 and get the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail +.

I'm honestly surprised with the new Prado's performance, I thought the downgrade in engine size and the seemingly bulkier chassis would make it worse for off-roading, but it seems like Toyota surprised us on some aspects. Imagine if it had mud tires.

In the chassis articulation tests there is no way the jeep should have not come in first sure it scraped but had the better/more consistent wheel to ground contact

buy a dmax get the dcb one prefferably an older one 2015 ish pre-dfp 4jk engine still Ulez compliant mate. I got the Fury model, never looked back its a weapon and eats potholes

Did you measure how deep was the puddle? Because it looks like few inches which I don’t think are bad compared to the rocks they crawled where jeep touched but LC only touched the exhaust.

The Land Cruiser always comes in at number 1. It's the King of the Off Roaders. The Jeep is the King of Rock Crawlers. The Defender is the King of Luxury and Refinement.
Plenty Isuzu Dmaxes can destroy an LC250 and LC300 offroad mate and they are twice as robust

@@vaemi1032 but that would be the problem of Toyota, for sending the car with these tires to an offroad testing. Test circumstances should be the same and not differentiate because one producer decided to equipe its car with shitty tires. Mat cheated this test big time!
He just drove until it levelled out at 19:45 too, whereas the others crested the hill earlier, not to mention the crazy mud on the descent causing issues with the Defender sliding rather than actually descending.
The Toyota is very impressive but it would have been more fun to keep things fair across the board. Including putting off-road tyres on the Toyota! And before anyone says I'm a fanboy I really dislike the new Defender 😂

When it comes to offroad ability and sheer prowness, the Land Rover is second to none superior.

When it comes to off-roading i would blindly take anything that has a Land-Cruiser badge on it.
I have a Jeep Rubicon. Its loud, slow, rough, terrible on the highway, terrible fuel economy, worst commuter I've ever owned and I LOVE IT! It's the most fun vehicle I have ever owned!

Quite unfair to the Land Rover on the hill decent: Clearly not the car’s fault and wheels were locked and it was sliding because that side of the hill were more slippery than the rest.

This is how I spot a fan boy. I thought slippery is where it had a chance to show its strength. Like LC being the one with less horse powers and All terrain tires but still competing. A better car would always use challenges to prove its capabilities.

Not sure if the owner of the Defender is aware, but the speed of hill descent, will vary, depending on which terrain response mode is selected....
Comfort, Dynamic, Eco, are all 6.2 mph.
Grass, Gravel, Snow, all 4.3 mph.
Mud ruts, 2.2 mph.
Sand 7.5 mph.
Could have won that challenge in 'mud' mode 😀

My choice would have been the Landcruiser before filming had commenced. The warranty, Toyota reliability etc are superb. I own a 2002 (Mk2) RAV4 2.0 petrol. Owned it over 3 years. Something finally broke in Decemver: I had to replace the rear offside brake light bulb. I think it was the original!!

Also, what you're calling a Land Cruiser is actually the Land Cruiser Prado. The actual Land Cruiser (LC300) is a V6 Twin-Turbo which is way more capable than the Prado. Wonder how badly that would've destroyed these 2 other cars!

Sam let himself and the Jeep down in that last attempt up the hill. He didn't carry enough speed through it and also kept trying to turn the wheel to gain grip up the slope, but with such incredibly loose gravel that just rips the rocks out of the ground, leaving more mud than gravel and lowering grip. He should've just did what Mat and the other guy did and gotten a nice build up of speed and just kept it pointing straight all the way up. Those tires definitely could've taken it all the way up just as well as the Toyota's AT tires did, if not better had he just kept the wheel straight and not backed off with the power because of the hole on the right side.
Awesome job here! Your humility in comedy is admirable.
