Why I'm Selling the Fujifilm X-H2

- Well, the time has come for me to go my separate ways from the Fujifilm X-H2. The Fuji X-H2 was my way back into the Fujifilm X-Series lineup and I will miss its ergonomic grip... but otherwise, it's all Fujifilm X-T5 and X-T Series for me for now.

I actually just sold my xt5 for the xh2 and loving it so far
I recently made the switch from the X-T5 to the X-H2. Have used X-T cameras for years and loved the dials for street photography, but after a recent landscape photography trip where switching between shooting styles was too fiddly in adverse conditions (drive, OIS, AF, and exposure settings, as well as custom profiles for other settings), which caused me to loose some shots in certain situations. I never had considered the X-H series before, but it seemed more suited for my current workflow and glad they exist otherwise would have had to consider options from other manufacturers more seriously.
It's a good reminder that no camera is perfect, nor is any particular one right for every situation or person. It can also be hard to admit something isn't right for you when you have spent a lot of $$$. Glad the X-T5 suits your workflow better, and that you figured it out sooner rather than putting up with it.
Booray Perry has an excellent video on comparing the PSAM and X-T Fuji cameras. Well worth watching. ruclips.net/video/AtNtjrYBHl4/видео.html
"Why the PASM dial on the Fuji X-H2 is better than the dials on Fuji cameras like the X-T5 and X-T4."
I agree with his reasonings about having to look for dials too.
Hi Caitlin! Great video. This issue is something that might be overlooked by casual shooters but if you are doing professional work it can make a huge difference as you mention here. I picked up the XT5 but also tested the XH2 and the performance for me was very similar.
It may have come via an update, but you set your dials to run your exposure triangle however you want now. For example, I run aperature from my lens, ISO from my front dial and shutter speed from my rear dial.
The dials functions can be set for any of the PASM settings, and you can also shortcut a button to be a function button that allows you to swap on the fly what your front dial does.
There is an option to confire X-H2 to have front wheel for iso and back wheel for shutter speed (or vice versa). Fuji is continuously updating their software and it is strange that this was not available on release.
So, it's quite convenient when you also have lens with aperture ring.
So, do you think you will change your mind on getting rid of the X-H2 now that the firmware has been updated?
I’ve really enjoyed having the ISO set to always being on the front wheel now.
As a Nikon D850 photographer for years (still use it as my main camera) I think the ergonomics of the X-H2 (which I bought recently) was a big relief. It is something you just have to get used to it, the ISO thing you mention. D850 works just the same way.
I switched from XT to XH-2 and I wish I've had done that a way back ;-) Nevertheless, goodluck with your 2 XT-5's 👍
I would love to see a comparison of the sensors. I returned the X-H2 and bought a new X-T4 and some lenses so now I have the X-T3 and X-T4. I really regret selling my X-H1, I really liked that camera.
Very helpful video. First time viewer of your channel. I bought the X-T5 for similar reasons. Using the X-S20 for video. I am just a hobbyist so no pressure. Muscle memory is real as switching between X-S20 and X-T5 is a bit awkward. Some things are the same and some are different and you need to remember where things are on one camera versus the other. I totally agree with having two of the same cameras. My budget didn’t allow for two XT-5s. I just started my RUclips channel and the X-S20 is perfect my video needs at the moment. 😊
You can assign one of the control dials directly to ISO, you do not need to use the labeled ISO button.
I’d love to hear more about the lenses you love and use the most!
Thanks for sharing this, you can set ur ISO direct to the up/down D pad buttons without having to press the upper iso, I managed to get used to it fairly quickly being my second camera XT4, with the grip I agree with you totally XT grips are hopeless but you can get the small rig L plate grip which brings the XT 5 closer to an XH2, i have one on my XT4 and sometimes I forget which camera i am holding.
Well, that makes a lot of sense. Great choice and the T4 will compliment your T5's perfectly
Yes, on your gear setup.
I own a XT-1, that I use for Infarred and I also own a XT-3. The XT-3 will be going in for a Full spectrim convertion.
And because I am planning on buying an XT-5, I already bought a "SmallRig" cage kit, for a larger grip. You should check into one,
if you are still missing the bigger grip. I went with the retro style, but they also have a standard Black, and silver model.
The buffer comes into play when you’re shooting high speed burst at 15fps. It doesn’t seem like that’s important to the kind of work you do so you’re good there!
I rarely change my ISO much. I had an XT5 for a couple weddings and couldn’t stand that I constantly bumped settings on the dials even with the little lock thing. Much prefer the XH2 but do like the screen of the xt5 better.
What do you think about the xs20?
My XH2 is is my main solo content video camera, and my XT5 is my main stills camera. If I were still shooting wedding photos (used to shoot 50-60 weddings a year back 20 years ago) 2 XT5's would be the way to go.
The XT4's I've had have been basically manual video cameras. I had to set the exposure and the WB and the Focus manually to get anything reliably usable. The Xh2 solved all that for me. I set everything to P, auto WB and eye AF and get 99% perfect videos. As good as the Sony a7Iv's and Nikon Z6II's I've used in the past. Just my experience. There's a lot to be said for having all your cameras interfacing the same way, especially at a wedding.
Glad you're stickin' with the gang. Totally respect your opinions and use case, but I don't know if I can walk away from the EVF. Using anything else (even my GFX50S II) makes me think, "Shit, I miss the X-H EVF". Also, I've gone all in on CFexpress Type B so I'm excited to see what's next.
Love your videos though!!! So well-spoken and natural. Thank you!
I have an XT5 and really love it, but I completely agree with you here. The EVF and lack of CF Express are the biggest drawbacks of the camera.
@@PeteCocoPhoto Yeah, and I think for people who don't care/don't know any better, the EVF and SD cards rock. It's just that the EVF on the X-H bodies is like a mini IMAX theater and the CFexpress Type B cards, when invested in, are worth the investment. Good time to be a photographer though :)
@@oxeneers I know right!? You don't realize it unless you've tried it in person.
hi, i have a x-h2s coming from a x-t3, you can remap ISO the same as x-t3 , on x-h2s hold "disp back" in for 3 seconds , go down to "Fn4" (up on d pad) and assign ISO to it , hope this helps, ive watched countless videos / tutorials on x-h2s and this was my problem as well. ps, you still can use the top ISO button along with Fn4 up on d pad
I have an XT3, in time I want to get an XT4 or XT5, Im interested in the difference between those two, mainly image quality and auto focus
Love the more traditional Fujifilm experience, having an X-Pro 2, X100V and XT5. My BTS in just knows those cameras. Cheers!
Hi, love your videos. best I've found on the X-H2/X-T5 on RUclips. could you please consider making a video comparing the the fast viltrox lenses to their Fuji counterparts on the X-T5? wondering if the price difference justifies the extra price for travel/street photography as companion for the 16-55/F2.8
Using Fuji for weddings in low light situation, how is it possible? Those wedding reception places are really dark sometimes. I want to upgrade from Sony RX100 v and narrowed down to Fuji x-s20 and Nikon Zf. I would prefer to stay compact but worry about low light performance using Fuji.
IS THE XC 35 F2 LENS BETTER THAN THE SIGMA 30MM F1.4 AND VILTROX 33MM
CAN YOU DO A VIDEO ON XC 35 F2
I HEARD THE IMG QUALITY OF XF 35 F2 AND XC ARE SAME
You could had used the exposure compensation as Iso button. IF the ISO are on auto and the aperture are not. Just has to set the lowest shutterspeed as well.
Yes, do the comparisons. Let’s get it done…. Will like to see it.
I use the tip from @pal2tech and set the iso to use the up button on the menu dial. Pressing in both turns iso setting on and allows you to change iso using the up and down buttons. A real game-changer (ISO-changer) for me. That also leaves the default ISO button to be programed for something else.
Muscle memory is definitely a worthy reason to switch back to the XT's. The auto ISO can be set to the X-H2 d-pad for quicker actions, rather than hitting the top button, however in a fast paced wedding environment I do understand that you need to limit the amount of times you're looking at the cameras to change a function.
Hi Caitlin! Great and honest Video! Currently I am photography centric and use three x-t2 with the same custom settings. So I can concentrate on the scene! 😊 If I would upgrade, I first thought about a X-H2S for video and better wildlife pictures and a X-S20 as second body and a x-t2 as backup. But I struggle also like you with the different handlings. If I win in the lottery 😂 now I think I would buy a x-t5, a x-t4 for video and by beloved x-t2 as backup. Then nearly everything can be handled and configured similar.
A easy and better fix then the front dial is to set the D-Pad up arrow to change ISO it’s even faster then the front dial and all the Fuji cameras have that capability. I leave the front and back dial for Aperture and Shutter Speed the D-Pad for ISO plus that’s where your thumb is and it’s super fast to operate that way
So the real reason for the change is because you had 2 XT-5’s that you used predominantly, correct? So if you would have created the muscle memory of the XH-2, and had multiple XH-2’s would it have been different for you?
you can easily program up and down button to iso for quicker changes
It's hard to change when we are in our habits. I struggled at first with the ISO control, coming from a XT4 in full manual mode, I wish it was available on a dial. That being said, I changed how I shoot, moving to shutter/aperture priority, use a ISO range/exposure compensation. I think it simplified my shooting and I am ok with the ergonomics now.
It is available on the dials now :)
going from a sony a7iii then picking up an xh1 to try fuji was a massive trip. relearning how to interact with your camera can definitely ruin the experience. But for me I stayed with fuji cause i didn’t have to carry full frame lenses anymore 😅
Interesting. I'm a long time X-T series user (currently with an X-T4), but I'm likely going to get an X-H2 simply for the form factor. I have long fingers and like the deep grip and chunky body. Also, I learned on a PSAM style camera so I don't think it would be a problem going back to.
Hi Caitlin, I hope you didn't sell it yet, as you probably know already the new firmware does allow us to bind the front dial to change ISO.
I love my X-H2... but talk about muscle memory disruption! For me it is that there is no button-press function on the front and rear command dials. It drives me mad and catches me out all of the time. I still have an X-E3 and have had XT-2, X-H1 and X-T4 all of which have command dial 'press-button' actions that are assignable. Two function buttons down on the X-H2!! When did taking features away from your newest 'flagship' model become a thing?
as mentioned in another comment, I switched from Sony (A7-IV) and I really love the X-H2 for the similarities - and now added an X-S20 as backup and 2nd body. Nevertheless I understand your train of thought.
We, who own the X-s20 and X-H2 don't have that much of a muscle memory issue since they have very similar styles. I'd have the same problems she has if I put an X-T-anything in my hands. I think, for Fujifilm folks, this is the dividing line.
I’ve been using dials all my life, now at 65 I don’t want to change.
Typically they have just removed the need to press the iso button I heard. I am also torn between these two cameras. I think I am leaning toward xt5 as have two xt4’s
I bought it… ❤
I used a pair of XT-5's for events and concerts, the build quality just isn't there for a professional environment, and I've had various freezing issues, and the hinges on the back screen eech...
These are cameras with great IQ but they are definitely made for someone going on vacation, or hiking, and general hobby photography.
I am getting my X-H2 tomorrow. I also shoot a R6
How is the r6
@@hoodeddayy8731 Now that we are 9 mths later. I have taken 7500+ shots with the XH2 and maybe 1500 with the R6. Not that the R6 is bad, I am finding I like the lighter/smaller/cheaper XH2 rig for personal work. The R6 is still much better for eye af wide open portrait work. Hands down!
I am hearing you, I am about to drop a cool 2 5K AUD (Aussie Dollars) for an XH2 upgrading from the XT series bodies. I fear exactly what you are talking about as an XT shooter over the past 5 years.
Yet I was a Canon shooter for 15 years prior to my XT1. I guess there is only one way to find out. The main reasons I want to give the XH2 a crack is the ergonomics (the XT5 is tiny!) and the EVF for my aging eyes.
As much as I love the dials for on the fly adjustments I really don't want to put my reading glasses on just to read them, I never had that problem till I hit my mid forties 3 years back.
Hope you gave the XH2 a crack 🎉. @ 72 my aging eyes REALLY appreciate the EVF on my XH2.
@jamessprague2164 nah.... I opted for an original XH1 instead as to me the XH2 felt a little ... meh.... to plastic for my liking. I prefer a little heft and the build quality just seems much better on the XH1. I don't need all the extra features for my limited work flow at the moment. Besides I got the XH1 with grip for almost a 3'rd of the price and it is MINT.
XT4 is actually a very good camera. They can just put a new CPU in it and it's good enough for photo and video. The rolling shutter is better than XH2 and XT5.
They have now fixed this in an update.
I love the X-H2S, and that's what I plan to move to once I sell off my remaining X-T3 and DSLR. It's a blast to use and pure overkill. Personally, I never got the whole X-H2 thing. It just doesn't make sense. I would have gone with the X-T5, but I'm a huge 50-140mm fan, and using a grip is easier on my wrists. Fujifilm ditching the grip was a deal killer. So, I'm going to go the X-H2S route for now. Maybe Fujifilm will kill off the X-H2 and deliver an X-T5 MKII with an accessory grip because that would have been the perfect camera for me.
As someone that is interested in buying the X-H2, can I ask what it is that doesn't make sense and why you'd want Fuji to kill it off? Ergonomically the XH2 and XH2s are the same (as I understand it), only the sensor is different: one with higher resolution, the other with a faster readout. I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something. Many thanks.
@@findermanimages Yes, I, too, want to know what he's talking about. The line goes X-H1/X-S10/X-H2+s/X-S20. They all have similar form factors. It's Fuji trying to win over those who are used to PSAM-type dials.
Grip, EVF and CF Express are what would probably push me into the opposite direction, if I had to make the choice. I tried both cameras (as well as the X-H2s), and being new to Fuji, I didn't have that muscle memory you're referring to.
Folks tout a camera with 2 SD slots. IMHO a CF-Express is NOT the same thing. They cost a LOT more. I have the X-H2 but it really does have only *one* SD-Card slot.
@@grafixnetz Not entirely sure what you're trying to say. A big reason for going for the X-H2 is that it has CF Express. Yes, it is more expensive, and for good reason. I don't mind paying more for higher speeds and being able to shoot RAW without running into buffer limits as fast as with SD. If media prices are your main concern, you should have opted for a different camera all together I think. But again,... I have no idea what you're trying to tell me.
GAS is such a funny thing
I am from India . I need this camera can u give it to me ?
😂
u are beautiful
You haven’t memorised your cameras menu and you already selling it. You should study it and give it time, now if you can’t figure out how to use it properly it means you haven’t use it enough. Some people learn it easy , and some people take time. Any camera is great as it is, the person using it is not.
Caitlin is so … honest and transparent to her viewers that she mentioned that she has an OCD disorder. Her brain just clicks better when she was just learning the Fuji system with her past Fuji XT3. Caitlin’s muscle memory feels at home with the XT 5 dial layout. Personally, I still have my Fuji XT3 but I haven’t used it since purchasing the XH2. I LOVE the feel of the XH2 in my big hands accompanying my 6’1” frame.
