I have to say as an A6500 owner I'm really jealous of the what Fuji are bringing to the table for their crop sensor cameras and customers. Looks to be a stunning lens.
Another great review, I always new there was something special about this lens, after buying this version I sold my older 35mmf1.4 and haven’t missed it one bit.
I am a newer subscriber and have watched several of your videos. I have to say your reviews seem unbiased and have a great depth of info. Thank you for the time you put into your videos. Wish you much success
The weather resistance is a big factor for me. If I shot mostly indoors or lived in a drier climate, I might have gone for the f/1.4 instead. But for me WR is critical.
I had trouble deciding how to frame and compose shots with this one. I've never been a 50mm fan... I'm more of a 35mm & 85mm guy. That being said, this is the best-feeling Fuji lens I've ever used. The size, rings, and overall build quality are just phenomenal.
Jeremy, I share exactly the same opinion as you and have the 56 1.2 and 35 1.4 and was looking at a 50mm and can't decide between the 35mm 1.4 or the 2.0 version such as this, tough decision atm ! #Dustin, Great review !!
You cover Fuji glass too??!! You’re one of the most dedicated creators on RUclips Mr. Abbott. I really admire and appreciate your work ethic, and the quality of your reviews. I recently acquired a Fuji X-H1 to go along with my beloved Sony A7iii. I picked up a Loxia 35mm f2 at a steal of a price, and now I’m after this Fuji XF 35mm. I’ll be sure to use your link this time around as I’m going to purchase it new. Thanks again!
Thank you for your reviews, Dustin! It's greatly appreciated, as I'm considering buying the Fuji X-T3 myself. The images you took with this lens is simply stunning! I'm really glad that you have done a bit more Fuji stuff! :) Greetings from Norway!
Reviewing the 35 f2 now Dustin. Gotta get my popcorn and put this one on the big screen. My 35 f2 plays musical chairs with my Xpro1 and XT3. Stellar lens.
This was the first prime I bought for my Fuji. It came with two zoom kit lenses in the package I bought. Solid lens, good build quality. One thing you did not mention that I noticed is the weather sealing. Rather critical for me as I shoot mostly outdoors and I live in Florida which rains often and unpredictably. It is the only weather resistant lens that I own, I need to buy one more WR lens at least.
Hi Dustin, thanks for these concise tests. I use the original 35mm f/1.4 in the studio for commercial and repro work and want a more compact 35mm for my ‘everyday’ X-E4. I saw Chris Frost’s test of this f/2 and the revealed uncorrected barrel distortion, that was having to be software corrected, worried me. As you have shown that the ‘real world’ results are outstanding I’ll order one (silver of course). Thanks for another great review! David Myers, Digital Masters Australasia.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks, one more question. I uploaded image from my new camera to below website and it shows 1 shutter count. Usually for my Sonys its always showed 3-4 indicating quality check. Just afraid, if it was manually moved to zero since i bought it online in a deal. www.apotelyt.com/camera-exif/fujifilm-shutter-count
The f2 is smaller , lighter , faster focus, and less expensive . The f1.4 is pricier, slighter sharper and slightly better in low light depends on your application.
I’ve been using 18-55 for many years and am now finally looking at primes, thanks for the very informative review. Sorry about us (Montreal) beating Toronto but good games though.
Dustin, excellent review and coverage as usual! As a current Sony user of FF and APS-C, and strongly considering Fuji at this time for several reasons -- I greatly appreciate all of your recent coverage of Fuji. Hope to see a review of the X-T30 in the near future. Thank you!
Dustin, great news! I know you recently tested the Fujinon XF 16-55mm F2.8 LM WR, any chance with the X-T30 that you might give the FUJIFILM XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS a try? Looking forward to your thoughts on the X-T30.
Dustin, wonderful. As the X-T30 seems to be essentially a mini X-T3, it seems like the so-called "kit" 18-55mm would be a good pairing. I really like the old-school form factor of the Fuji.
I know for Fuji shooters it's some kind of a big debate weather the f/2 or the f/1.4 versions of the standard primes are the way to go. From your test, unless I'm shooting regularly in the night, I cannot imagine I would need a "better" lens than this one lol
Great clear and precise reviews 🥰! The XF 35mm f2 is the only native fuji lens I have for my X-Pro (my main system is Sony A and E/FE). I am wishing to buy a more wide angle lens for landscapes the Fujinon XF 18mm f2 R and would love to see your review of it (it seems not having a good reputation then I am hesitant to buy it 🤔).
How about this lens for video, does this have any autofocus issues coming to video. Should I think about 23mm f2 over 35mm f2 for video and is there any image quality or depth of field differences between these two. Could you please advise me.
I liked the 35mm a bit better in terms of image quality, but neither of them are exceptional video lenses in terms of video AF (as compared to other systems). On the Fuji front, both lenses are in upper half due to having quieter focus motors.
Yes X-T3 AF is pulsing, it is not the lenses fault. I use it in continuous shooting a lot, and noticed that too. It loses focus for no reason, and then reaquires it again during the series, so that in series of 10 shots there always some (maybe 3 or 4, or even 5) are slightly out of focus. Unlike Canon 1DX which I used in similar situations, that gives all 10 shots clear. I think this is a software issue. If only Fujifilm had the expertise Canon has in AF algorithms, that would make all the difference. They already have good hardware. Until then, we have to leave with pulsing AF...:) By the way, I dumped 16-55 zoom, and replaced it with three lenses 16mm (have both 1.4 and 2.8 versions), 35-2 and 50-2. Will be shooting with this combo for the nest 6 months and see how it goes.
With as much as the word microcontrast is said in this, have you thought about maybe doing a video on what exactly it is? I think it would be helpful to have someone with your cadence and way of explaining things go over it with visual examples. (I know what it is, but I've never seen someone properly show the difference between it and sharpness.)
Am I correct that a flash is used in most of the portret photos? If so, it is no suprise that the images are sharp as flash photos are mostly sharp. Do you also have some non flash photos as sample?
@@DustinAbbottTWI that is a pleasant suprise! I do wonder how you get even lighting on the subject though, lets say for example the old couple in the snow. They seem to be evenly lit. How did you do that with only ambient light?
if you are still interested i used 35mm ultron first version-its very good but wide open has more glow than fuji lenses.. so it gives softer feeling-but there are details of course-you just need to apply unsharp mask to pull them out..
Question guys , why is the xf 23 mm f2 $450 and this 35mm f2 $400 ? Is the 23 mm superior in quality or something ? They both seem to be about the same build to me other then focal length .
I would venture that 23mm represents a more expensive focal length to engineer. Traditionally 35mm lenses are more expensive than 50mm lenses - which is what these two lenses compare to.
Did you find distortion issue if you disabled the auto correction? since lightroom user as you are, you may have not noticed the distortion as being autocorrected? I found something strange here ruclips.net/video/DkojGws6px8/видео.html But what if someone does not use lightroom?
Hi Manish, obviously I didn't see the issue or I would have documented it here. What would be your motivation in wanting to disable the autocorrection, though?
@@DustinAbbottTWI I shoot with Nikon primarily and my 50mm is distortion free and no auto-correction in any software. I click Raw + Jpeg. Sometimes I have a good edited jpeg files. Now if I want to edit raw file of same and if that gets autocorrected, then the dimensions don't match jpeg. How the IQ compares with the 16-55mm at 35mm in your opinion?

It's a weird dichotomy with the Fuji lenses (basically backwards of most manufacturers).
