This is honestly one of my favorite scenes in the entire show, and it shows Mr Peanutbutter is monumentally more complex than people give him credit for.
“You think I don’t notice?” recontextualizes every time Mr Peanutbutter seems ‘too dumb to be sad’. Because he says outright that he knows bad things happen, that he knows how Bojack treats him. He understands reality. But that’s never stopped him from being happy. From being hopeful.
I also think that him forgiving Bojack is hugely underrated. Because Bojack Horseman isn’t a show where characters just forget and forgive. I mean.. look at Herb. Look at Todd. Characters in this show don’t forgive people unless they mean it, because this show doesn’t have to cater to its audience wanting things to turn out good.
But Mr Peanutbutter does forgive Bojack. Because even though Bojack is “a stupid piece of shit,” “a selfish coward,” and “a tar pit,” Mr Peanutbutter chooses to see the good in him. Like Mr Peanutbutter chooses to see the good in everything.
    I think that’s really significant

    • @ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502

To be fair though, it should be pointed out that Wanda pressured him into forgiving bojack, so it's up for debate how genuine it is. Of course I would still argue its mostly genuine, as as far as I remember there are no hints of him not actually forgiving him in future episodes.

i think the saddest thing about that is that it's because mr peanutbutter is a labrador. almost all other characters are given human depth and comprehension beyond their species, but mr peanutbutter is far more similar to his real life counterpart than any other on the show. of course he forgives bojack, he's loyal. of course he doesn't grow with his partners, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. he can tell when he's being mistreated, as many animals do, but he lives his life in a series of barely-connected moments of joy or anger or disappointment and doesn't spare a second to ever look back or forward. this isn't humanly possible, and i think that's the point the writers were trying to make with his character - only a dog could spend all those years being mistreated and still stick with bojack

Hence his offering to hear out Bojack when Bojack says he needs a friend, and then as soon as Bojack starts talking he turns around and talks to someone else. Also (spoilers) he shows his true colors when he proposes to Pickles after sleeping with Diane.

I think its a bit disappointing that most viewers don't notice that Mr. Peanutbutter also has some serious problems himself just because he happens to be a nice and sociable person and a lovable animal. He is in serious denial about all of his problems. This was a major point of his visit with his brother where he can't even talk to his brother about important issues because he is aggressively in denial about anything being wrong.
"Fill your life with meaningless things and then eventually you'll die," isn't supposed to be him "being real", its a big warning sign about his outlook. He isn't invested in anything enough to take anything seriously or do anything meaningful.

When Mr Peanutbutter said what else can the universe owe BoJack, I realise that on the outside, people always feel that if you are lucky to have certain privileges, you automatically have no excuse to be unhappy with your life. And that made it harder for BoJack to come to terms with the damage his mom brought to him, because he is supposed to be satisfied by having much more than other people, despite not having the emotional healing that he truly needed instead.

This is something that the new season dug deeper at, and it seems in season 6 this personality flaw is going to drag him down, and it will not be pretty to say the least.
Mr. Peanutbutter evidently cannot be alone, and with each failed marriage it's becoming more painfully obvious that he needs something, or rather, someone to continually validate his existence and worth. In his relationships, he is more concerned with putting on a show of love rather than actually loving his partner. Hence, his obsession with grand, over-the-top gestures, which he has come to believe earns him brownie points with his partner. He isn't malevolent in this, mind you, but it seems he enters relationships for the wrong reasons, and the fact he is constantly throwing himself in the mix, be it at his parties, or some new gig, shows that he can't simply be content with himself. He needs to prove to himself and others that he can be loved.

@Instrumentality1000 That is very highlighted when both address their issues about their death parents to the crew.
BJ wanted contention but refused to admitted he wanted people to care about him and the dead of his mother, so he told everyone that he don't want attention because of that, while MPB told everyone that because his mother died he wanted all the love and support he could have from the crew.
Both wanted the same but their means to obtain what they want are different.

Honestly, both characters are correct and in the wrong at the same time. Bojack is right to be annoyed at Mr. Peanutbutter’s constant attempts to be his friend, even when he’s not interested. It’s not like his disinterest is hidden, either. However, Mr. Peanutbutter isn’t wrong to point out that much of Bojack’s misery is his own fault and that, despite everything he has, he chooses to continue to wallow in self-pity. Of course, this does negate the mental scars that Bojack’s abusive past caused, but, even so, Mr. Peanutbutter isn’t wrong that Bojack chooses to be miserable, instead of bettering himself.

I agree. He was really interesting in seasons 1-3, but they sort of just dumbed him down from seasons 4-6. He always sort of seemed like some who was hiding his own shit behind some facade, but the show decided not go in that direction and just made him stupid.

    • @jinxthatsme2317
      @jinxthatsme2317 4 года назад +8

Todd was also another character I wish had gotten more development. He started off as a kid who was insecure and lacked purpose unless he was busy going off on his Todd shenanigans. In the Chicken 4 Dayz episode in season 2, Todd was going through some existential crisis where he felt like his life was purposeless and phoned PC to ask her to give him some direction in life.
It was a really interesting aspect of his character, but I felt like once they started to focus more on his asexuality, characteristics like that were glossed over. I feel like they also wanted to do more with Todd and Emily but sort of just buried it under the sand when they couldn’t figure out how to develop them more. They tried again in Season 5 to expand on it, but seemed to exist for the sole purpose of reminding us that character exists rather than doing something with her.
Ralph also seemed to just fade into obscurity without much explanation or growth. They brought him back again as well in season 5 for a brief episode that lead to pretty much nothing happening that was relevant to the plot. I feel like from Seasons 4-6 the writing for the side characters got messy since the writers didn’t seem to know what they wanted to do with them. Which is why I felt their arcs in season 6 felt rushed.

I'm also really glad we didn't see Mr. Peanutbutter abruptly switch to sympathetising with Bojack because even though Bojack has his issues and it's sad, it doesn't take back what he did and how it affects others. Mr peanut butter is sarcastic to this question with his answers but tells him that HIS WIFE told him. While the two weren’t compatible, they weren’t cruel to each other. They did try to be a good honest couple because that’s what a good marriage does. Bojack COULDNT EVEN understand this. He THOUGHT Diane didn’t tell mr peanutbutter. Because that’s what a person trying to avoid problems would do. Bojack can’t get what a good marriage is and what good morals are because of himself and his fucked up role models in his youth.

This scene is like a parent (Mr Peanut Butter) trying to get through to some kid (BoJack) that's been deliberately breaking shit and hurting people for nothing more than attention. Then when he's put on the spot what does he do? He gives a half-baked 'confession' that could be summed up as "poor me, why does no one help". He'll say whatever is most convenient for him at the time, which is why he never grows up. His actions indicate that he doesn't actually want to change, the only thing he wants is attention regardless of what kind it is. He'd threaten suicide for attention, but would never follow through with it. At best he'd fake his own death but instead of leaving he'd attend his own funeral.
I'm a man of reciprocation and find it difficult to care about people like BoJack in the real world, primarily due to them being unable and/or unwilling to care about anyone but themselves. No doubt BoJack would claim he is unable.

I mean...the show constantly stresses that Bojack is not a good person. Everything wrong with him is, if not entirely, mostly his fault. Yes, he doesn't want to change. Yes, he abuses everything and everyone close to him. But the show wants you to care about him not because he's a good person, but because deep down he isn't and he knows that. And sometimes in life, we're all that terrible person inside wanting to stay in their selfish little world, even if we're more willing to change than him. Bojack doesn't want to be a bad person, but he's simply broken, even if it is his own fault.
I don't know if what he said to Mr. Peanutbutter is just an excuse. Sure, it's convenient to make himself vulnerable there, but I think he's also speaking from the heart when he's saying that. Call me a dumbass, but I think Bojack's simply resigned himself to being unable to do better, even if he actually could.

You're no dumbass, it's a fair point. I've definitely made it too personal, relating it to my own experiences so the question I have is this: how do you implore BoJack to be better - what does he need to experience to really want to, nay, believe he can change for the better.
I suppose I just find it irksome that he is 'honest' to himself about being bad, broken and selfish but then immediately backtracks once he's found to be in the wrong and has to start lying his way out of it, making excuses and pointing fingers at anyone but himself. I appreciate the reply, helps to better understand others and shift my own perspective.

I honestly think (and keep in mind, I haven't seen season 4) that Bojack needs one of two things: he needs to care enough about being a bad person and being unhappy to change, which would require him to get to even lower lows or to have something for which he has to change. Wanda could have been that, but she accepted him too readily. She never set a standard for him to be at. He was somehow good enough. But he needs something to tell him he needs to become a better person to have it. I think those are the only two options at this point.
And, in the same line of reasoning, this also means he is sad and he is a terrible person, but he's not terrible enough to want to change. He's only terrible enough to be comfortable, together with people who will never leave him, no matter how "Bojack Awful" he goes.

Honestly, I never liked Bojack Horseman, the show or the character. As good as the writing apparently is, it's so hard to feel sorry for a millionaire living the life of luxury being paid to do nothing.
It feels like being asked to watch a show about a medieval king who kills anyone who he thinks might kill him to seize his throne, including his own children. Yes, you might get an emotional scene where the king kills his beloved son when he's still a weak child who reacts to the stabs of his knife with "Why are you doing this daddy? I love you," but if you take a step back you'll realize that the king created that situation for himself because of his damaged mind, which makes it lose a bit of impact because the king won't commit suicide because he feels ashamed of what he did and knows he will likely do again, instead he'll go "I accept myself for what I am," and justify his terrible actions in his mind. I know that some people will defend that kind of thing, but it isn't good storytelling to have a character never undergo significant growth or face real trials.
Having a character feel shame but never direct punishment for their horrible actions as they are forced to realize how much of a terrible person they are reflects the bias of the writers. In their minds, the fact that their character feels shame means that the character has been punished appropriately because that's the way their minds work. It's the same mindset that teenagers have when they are forced to pay a fine for dealing drugs or drinking while driving. In their minds, the shame of being caught doing something wrong is punishment enough. That shouldn't be true, and we shouldn't allow this to become a celebrated thing.
In Greek tragedies, there's a very good reason why characters would often get killed or worse after they committed a truly terrible act for their wealth and power. For Bojack, it feels like instead of being punished for his terrible actions, he feels a little embarrassed and is forced to apologize and/or lay his feelings bare.

I'm really glad to see I'm not alone in this. I like this show, but I have always hated Bojack. I never got how this show expects me to care for this character who keeps doing horrible stuff and making the same stupid mistakes, yet never really changes. I always thought I was missing something, because in scenes like this it feels like I should feel pity for Bojack, but I'm 100% on Mr Peanutbutters side. But I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this way.
I did absolutely love the episodes following Princess Carolyn though, she's a much more sympathetic character.

I'll say this Mr. Peanut Butter does have a point. Bojack does tend to be a total asshole. I mean no guy in their right mind would want to be friends with someone. After finding out they kiss their wife course. Everytime Bojack gets a good thing in his life. He does tend to screw things up.

Mr. Peanut Butter is a strange character for me, in some aspects I do understand what he goes through, but otherwise I can't relate to him. He represents a form of toxic positivity for me which is something I'm not mentally willing enough to tolerate. I hate big gestures, surprises, and I guess a constant positive façade people put up. But there's another aspect of him that I find disturbing and that's his desire to be liked by everyone. There are quite a few individuals who I don't like that have attempted to befriend me. At first I never knew how to deal with it. But by the time I entered college my solution to that problem was just straight up telling people I didn't like them. And if they ever asked why, I'd explain it to them. With that understanding, it's actually a lot better to tolerate these individuals now as they understand my feelings towards them and we have a mutual tolerance (not to mistake for fondness) of one another

"You're a millionaire movie star with a girl friend who loves you, ACTING IN YOUR DREAM MOVIE. What more do you WANT? What else could the universe possibly OWE you?"
This is what we all want to say to people who are "suffering from success".

This show went so hard, and I honestly love this show for it. BoJack isn't a good person and he pays for it - often. The writers really walked a wire by surrounding him with complicated characters, and Character Actress Margo Martindale.
