No wonder Ozzy can't hear for shit after all those years on stage with so much Bass power.
i've recorded geezer a few times in the studio, and i can tell you this....he can plug in any bass straight into a direct box....right to tape/protools...and it sounds like geezer butler. 90+% of his tone is in his fingers and how he plays.
Yeah I'd also noticed this thing happens too when plug straight into DI or even direct to desk. It's as though all the stage gear is just the icing on the cake.
Very nice part 2 on Geezer.
I can only imagine the time and effort that you put in to gather this information. John Paul Jones and Jack Bruce would make fascinating subjects for one of these vids. Thank you
Thanks Fender Jay. This one was a bit more painstaking for some reason so thank you for the consideration :D. JPJ and Jack Bruce are both on the list. I'll give them both a +1 for you :D
Having been a fan of Black Sabbath and counting Geezer as a major influence during my early years of working on my playing, this is a good deal of appreciable information. Well done!
Thank you Lord G. Glad you enjoyed the video. You could do a lot worse than Geezer Butler ;)
David Ellefson
Lakeland and ashdown. I play them both. Great basses and the amps can get from a modern sound and a vintage sound. Loaded my other pj basses with geezer EMGS. Powerful!
Amazing video! The first part of Geezer Butler's rig was how I was introduced to the channel. Love what you got so far and can't wait for season 2! I would like to see a video on Robert Trujillo if possible. Keep up the good work! :D
Thanks Maxwell, glad to have you watching! No doubt Robert will make an appearance in season 2!
Very well done video. Thank you so much for providing the info without any BS, and especially without any crappy music in the background. Your videos should be used to teach other people how to make a proper video! Properly researched, with evidence to back each point made, and all the pertinent data without any of the selfish "listen to me and how smart I am" stuff that so many other channels have. Excellent, sir. Just excellent. As a forever Geezer fan.... : )
Hah! Thanks Dave I really appreciate that. I think you're the only person to say they don't want background music XD. Thanks dude, glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the great informative video.
I have loved Black Sabbath Music ever since I was a teenager back in the 1970s.
I always wanted to play my own music, my own compositions and improvisations.
Black Sabbath inspired me.
But I never knew how they produced the sound that they created.
It is great to learn how they created the music and what equipment they used.
Not every teenager can afford all that expensive equipment, so we made do with what we could get.
But much new and interesting music is created on a very low budget.
We can not all become Heavy Metal Rock Gods.
But we can try and in the process learn a lot and maybe create some interesting sounds.
Glad you enjoyed the video Steve, I hope it helped. It goes to show, just use what you got and you could be Metal Gods.
Geezer is my favourite bass player
That's great Barry, did the video do him justice?!
Yeah, you are doing a great job with this channel
Haha thank you Barry, that's great to hear :D
Everything you've done so far has been fantastic, and thanks. There's so many great bass players, but for simplicity, I'll suggest Cliff Williams of AC/DC.
Thank you for the good words Ken, I appreciate that. Cliff Williams is on the list, I'll give it a +1 for you.
Hooray for bi-amp rigs! :) That's how I roll, but with "only" two heads and two different cabs.
The only way to do it!
In 1971 , his rig was made up of 6 Laney cabs , a 100 watt Laney amp and 2 100 watt slaves .Set up like two normal 100 watt head and two stacked cabs on either side of a stack consisting of a pair of Laney 2x 15 cabs. stacked up with slave head.
get around Rinus Gerritsen from Golden Earring.. great stories and a very underrated bassplayer
Oooo sounds interesting, I'll take a look thanks Blode.
wish there was a guitar player with a video like this, awesome content man!
Thanks Matko, glad you enjoyed yourself. If there isn't a guitar rig video you could always start one!
good info at all times
I would request al Cisneros but I don't think a lot of people know who he is so I'm casting my vote for Lemmy
Hey, a request is a request I'll take it! Lemmy is already requested so I'll put Al is on the list for you :D
Idk if many people heard of him but he's true gear freak. His Green rig was massive
plezz do an al cisneros
Hell yes!! Al Cisneros!
I'll 2nd the Al request
Brilliant video again man, I genuinely wish I found you in the future so I could binge watch your videos 😂😂
This is one of the best comments I've read, thanks Ryan that's a great compliment :D
Forgot to mention.... GREAT CHANNEL!!!
Excellent Alfie-excellent dude.
Cheers Gary, glad you enjoyed yourself!
Great work, mate. I think that Peter Steele and Roger Waters rigs would be interesting! Cheers from Italy :)
Thank you Lio, Peter is on the list and Roger Waters is a fantastic suggestion. Watch this space ciao!
Please do pete's rig!
if anyone’s curious, the Chicago Iron company are now making the Tycobrahe wah pedal! They have been for a while, check them out if you’re curious
Wow that's sweet, I'll be looking into that, thanks for sharing.
Which Bass They sound pretty spot on, and they also make versions that sit inside the enclosure of a regular Dunlop Wah
A massive amp set up for a bass guitar God! 🔥🔥
The only way to play!
Thank You, very well done.
AWESOME video as always, sir!!!!
Please do videos for Krist Novoselic, Dee Dee Ramone, and Justin Chancellor!!!!
Thanks Angus, I appreciate that. I'm loving the choices, all three are on the list. Watch this space!
+Which Bass
You're very welcome! Spectacular! I can't wait to see what you have in store for the future! You're amazing!! Keep up the great work! :)
Have You done, or will You do, one of these on Judas Priest's bassist Ian Hill??
Hey Gary, no I haven't done yet. I'll add Ian to the list, watch this space!
Alfie, a video breakdown for Ben Shepherd, during his time in Soundgarden, would also be fantastic! Please consider, if you haven't already hatched a cunning plan to do so.
Great suggestion Eric thanks dude! I've thought about it a bit ;)
I take my hat off to you, you've done your research. It's also nice to see young un's passionate about old rock music. The only thing I'd like to see added is a look at the bass players style and some of their best bass lines.
Black Sabbath were the first rock band I got into, I love Geezer's bass playing, his sound and his song writing ain't bad either. He turned me on to playing the bass and I play quite a few of his bass lines everyday when practicing. Cheers.
Thank you Diabolical, I appreciate that. You and I have that in common. Studying Geezer made me a better player for sure.
Geddy lee!!!
Geddy's coming! Hold tight!
Canadian Bassists don't count.
Great video!! Love watching all of your work. Very very informative! As always.. I haven't missed one yet.
Thanks Cruise, glad you enjoyed yourself and glad to see you back!
Which Bass been a bit busy. I catch your videos on the tour bus while on the way to the next gig. Very informative!
Great channel! It’s documented in parts all over the place but consolidating all the info on Jaco would’ve great. Thanks!
Thanks John that's the exact reason for the video, glad you enjoyed it :D
Great channel, thanks. John Entwhistle and Chris Squire would be my top choices.
Thanks Andrew, both are great choices, watch this space.
Love the vids man not many RUclipsrs making stuff on bass and bass players!
Thanks Brawler I appreciate that, glad to have you watching.
I was soooooooooooo looking forward to this episode.
That's good to hear! I hope it was worth the wait!
Thank you for the information on Geezer Butler.
Thanks Raymond, glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you Alfie
Not to mention I immediately shared your video among my 5,000 fb contacts
I really think more new found friends to come!
Go on like this
Let's see again on season #2
Claudio, thank you for the comment sir. And sharing it to your FB friends, I thank you again! If they're here I hope they are welcome. Glad to have you and your pals watching.
Consistently briliant channel. The info is superb!.Thanks for the hard work and sharing!
Thank you Jon Jon, glad to hear it!
You've done it again! Great info for us gear geeks.
Thank you William, glad you enjoyed yourself :D
Thanks for the info! I'm enjoying your bassist profiles.
Thanks Derwin, glad to have you watching.
I’m sure we all want to see Cliff Burton
We all love a bit of Cliff, what do you like about him? What makes him different than other players?
His approach to bass was pretty unique at the time. He would go about his playing more like a guitarist, and his Wah skills were unheard of back in his day!
His love, and appreciation of classical music. He could be very melodic (Orion), but very sharp and aggressive (Battery) He produced a sound like no other, with the right combo of pedals, technique, and amps.
Hey Jesse, I wanted to let you know my Cliff Burton video is now out ruclips.net/video/3cb_99LWKnM/видео.html
Looking forward for knowing more about Geezer.
You're in luck then Andres, part 3 was released yesterday. Check it out!
Thank you!
Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne
Thanks Paul, interesting suggestion. If you were going to make your best friend listen to Ryan, what song would you suggest?
Which Bass i would suggest them Dig by Mudvayne.. Ryan was so vicious with his bass on that song
The whole first album is a great display for Martinie, I would say the guitar takes a backseat to the drums and bass
Thanks for posting part 2.
Of course! I couldn't leave you hanging :D
What I picked up real early was geezer is replicating Entwistle.
Brother, I know that I'm late to the party, but your channel has truly been great source of information. I truly love it.
Could you please tell me - would you ever do a video on a rig of Marco Hietala (ex. Nightwish/Tarot)? Literal idol but he's always been very silent about his gear (nor was I able to find anything concrete for all of the years I follow him).
All I know is that he started on a Charvel bass, moved on to Warwicks (Infinity/Vampyre models), that he uses a Roland's Boss pedalboard/processor and that's it. I wasn't able to find any info on his amps, heads and so on. Your investigation skills are AMAZING so I put my cards on you. x'D
Whether you do the video or not, thanks anyways!
All the best!
Geezer used in the early 70s stock Laney Bass 100 cabs loaded with Fanes. You can see the cabs on a few photos. He used 3 straight cabs and 1 angled "cheese wedge" Laney cab (he may have more cabs at this time but the arent much photos of the early gear. I own one of his BS labelled Laney cabs dated to 69/70...beaten as hell but sounds so damn good,, cheers man
Awesome, I read the Laney cabs were custom but didn't know what was loaded into them. Tell me more about your cab, this is Geezer's actual one or they had a signature made?!
Mine cab is modified with a speakon jack and i bought it with Celestion G12H 30w greenbacks dated to 1975. The cab was definietly a Sabbath cab assuming from the band logo sprayed on the back with army letters. They used to mark they gear with that type of font in the 70s. Watch the video on youtube named "War Pigs - Black Sabbath (Rare Footage) [1970/xx/xx @ Germany]" and you can see at 0:07 Geezer fron the back and a cabinet labelled with that logo. And assuming from the little metal plate with the serial number and the writing "Laney Bass 100" i assume the cab was owned by Geezer...but maybe they used it as a PA or a guitar cab. :) Another famous user from this Bass 100 cab and the Supergroup head was Noel Gallagher. :)
These videos are phenomenal. Great work!
Thank you Jon I appreciate that.
I'm in a cover band that does a wide variety of music and your channel has been SO helpful for tracking down certain sounds. Plus, it's just fun to kick back and watch.
Ah Jon, you're most welcome. I'm glad I can share the knowledge! :D
I'd love a video on Nate Mendel from the Foo Fighters, his tone is amazing!
Ooo Nate Mendel, that's a good choice! Watch this space!
That's a serious set up
Amazing and SO very well done.. Thank you!
Thank you Martin, glad you enjoyed it :D
Legendary
Very nice review man! Keep rocking!
Thanks for the comment Zamuro. R'n'fn'R!
Which Bass I think your reviews are interesting. The way you present all the facts are very accurate. Have a nice evening. Regards from Denmark
great video thanks
Very interesting, I enjoyed this video, thank you.
Thanks for watching Rich. Glad you enjoyed it .
Hartke Kilo has only tubes in the preamp. The poweramp is solid state. I should know, I’ve had one...
Cool as always ! great site !!
Thanks Albert, glad you enjoyed it!
Great Video! More, please!
Thanks Jensen, don't you worry more is coming.
I second the Al Cisneros video
A fine suggestion Blckirsh. Watch this space.
Which Bass Cheers Bruv
Awesome vid!
Thanks Maxwell, glad you enjoyed it :D
Again, I don't want to nitpick....
But those Hartke Kilos (Kilo meaning 1.000 as in "Kilogramm" = 1.000 Gramm) have 1.000 Watt @ 4 Ohm.
I had a Hartke Kilo several times as a rental, and I have to say that the Kilo is the masterpiece of Larry Hartke. Until now. I am sure there is more to come.
Wow. That is so cool. I have found this one interesting.
Thank you Sonic, happy to hear you enjoyed it.
Great video!!!
Thanks Cyko, glad you enjoyed it.
Very good!
Glad you think so!
you need to do a MIKE DIRNT gear vid :)
Mike Dirnt is a great suggestion! I'll see what I can do.
Which Bass awesome and thanks for your channel! :)
This is a cool channel my man
Thanks Joe, glad to have you watching.
I would’ve liked if you mentioned that the emg gzr P pickup is modeled directly from Bobby Vega’s stock P (I forget the year at the moment).
Not sure where the J came from but many reviews (and in my own experience) say it’s underwhelming.
Ah sorry, I didn't know this! EMG are light on information unfortunately. You never know if its a brand new pickup or like in this case its modeled after someone else's.
Jean Jacques Brunel from the Stranglers. I’m thinking his early tones from the first three albums.
Very interesting choice there John, thank you. I'll put Jean on the list.
absolut love
He uses and MXR M85 bass distortion. That was revealed when they realease the Wah Pedal.
Link me, as I didn't see this.
Eric Avery & Jack Bruce are my favourite players so they'd be great.
And very fine players they are Sonic Jane, they are both on the list. Watch this space!
I found satisfying how you say "pickups"
You should subscribe to my AMSR vids ;)
i've always been curious about pete steele's rig as he was able to replicate his studio sound live pretty accurately. also his custom basses were awesome
That's an interesting skill to have. I do like that in musicians when they can replicate their sounds exactly. You have me intrigued Scrapensniff! Watch this space.
Billy Sheehan
What do you like about Billy specifically?
man's a living legend. such an amazing player. A really friendly person as well.
Would love to see a Cliff Williams video!
A classic. I like it.
You're wrong. He used one Hartke head for two 4×12 and one for two 2x15. He used different eq settings for the different speakers.
There is a interview on emg tv where he's explain his hartke gear.
The interview says
"If you have two different style speakers like on Geezers', we have double 15 on the bottom and 4x12 on top and you can run a 4x12 off the left side of the amp and a double 15 off the right side."
Just subscribed there now. Cool insite. Les Claypool was super.
Thank you very much for the sub Brian, glad to have you watching.
Your delivery is very well timed, good info and a hint of giggles. Nice. Brian
David Ellefson?
What do you like about good ole Dave?
Oh god please no.
Peter Hook of Joy Division, New Order, and his solo band The Light. And if you can Stuart Chatwood of The Tea Party
Great suggestions Hero. Watch this space.
David Ellefson or Rex Brown
Thanks Ivan, both are on the list. Watch this space!
Good ol' Geezer!
Cliff Burton
What do you like about Cliff Burton?
I like everything
Come onnnn give me more than that! What drives you on an emotional level?! Is it the basses, the effects pedals. His talent or the that gorgeous head of hair. What do you feel Edoardo, what is it?! Tell us!
Which Bass Effects pedals please :D
I think you should do the pedals and amps, and also the sound which is incredible
This guy was a monster!!
Enjoyed this......On the Last Supper tour, Geezer used an unidentifiable, well to me anyway, bass that has scalloped frets up at the E fret area.....
Thanks Vaughan, glad you enjoyed it. I think I may have answered your question part 3. It was probably a Viger bass.
@@WhichBass excellent....keep these going.....
Is there a breakdown of Clutch's Dan Maines rig? If not, could there be one, in the future? His tones are just so diverse, I would LOVE more info!!
I don't have one atm Dean but I'll add Dan to the list. Watch this space.
EMG FTW!
Feddy from Novacrow from the UK
Interesting suggestion Dain, thanks.
LES CLAYPOOL !!!
Another vote for Les! Make sure you're subscribed and watch this space!
And another vote, Les is very secretative about his rig
Another vote for les!
Probably more on the edge of rock, but in SUCH high demand...Lee Sklar!
Interesting suggestion Jeff. I like it.
Great video, man. I would request D.D. Verni, unfortunately there isn't a lot of information on his rig. It would be great to see a Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden) or even a Shavo Odajian rig.
Thank you Doritio Man, if there isn't much information on D.D how can I figure it out?! Haha I do like a challenge though, so I'll see what I can do :D
please - John Gallagher bassist / front man of the incredible nwobhm band RAVEN !! = thank you for all your work - enjoy these videos quite a bit . i miss playing bass so much .
Hey Petey, that's an interesting suggestion thank you. I like it. I'll see what I can do. Very glad to hear you enjoy the videos. Go out and play man! Don't suffer in silence!
Great video !! Cheers from the USA ! Run an episode of cliff Williams from AC/DC or Gene Simmons from kiss for the next installment of “know your bass player”
Thanks GMusic, Hello to you in the US of A (Happy late Turkey Day!) I'll put these two the list and see what I can do :D
Some players that I think have cool rigs that would make for good videos: Simon Gallup, Justin Chancellor, Jack Cassady, Jaco Pastorius, Al Cisneros, Tatsu Mikami, Peter Hooke, Mike Watt, and John Paul Jones.
They are very interesting players, thanks Matt. If you could only watch one of them right now who would it be? Go!
Hmmmm...given your past videos Justin Chancellor would probably be the best fit.
If there is any bass amplifier brand that is giving great service its ashdown! A guy i know had a 4x10 and a 1x15 cab with the 4x10 having cloth and the 1x15 a steel grill, he asked and got the steel grill for free, like no Joke, FREE! what service man!
I would get ashdown if i didnt have the peavey tmax that i own now!
Feildy by korn 1/2
I'd like to see and hear Michael Anthony's Van Halen bass rig in the 90s. Allah Ampeg and Mesa Boogie. thanks have a good one remember stay Frosty
Interesting suggestion John thanks.
Cool and interesting. Great job. How about doing one on Mel Schacher from Grand Funk?
Thanks De Falco, glad you enjoyed it. That's a great suggestion thank you. I'll see what I can do.
Mel is killer!!!!
Love to see Troy Sanders of Mastodon, his bass tone is sexy af, I know he used Orange amps for a while, but I believe that has changed in recent years?
That's a mighty fine choice there Sidetrax, I'll have Troy on the list and see what I can do.
Thanks for uploading these videos, I'm so glad I found your channel.
Roger waters rig?
Thank you Matt, glad to have you watching. Roger Waters is a brilliant suggestion thank you.
Which Bass I've heard some conflicting stories on what he uses and I really want to know what right
Les Claypool, please
Another vote for Les, he's high up on the list, watch this space!
Great video!! It’d be great if you did Alex Webster!!
Thank you Patricio. Alex has been requested a few times. I'll see what I can do :D
Which Bass Great! I LOVE your vids man.
Geezer's HEAD OF DOOM is only 600 watts @ 4ohms. I personally emailed Ashdown & asked & they sent me the specs in a reply email.
Anyone can see the back of the amp & it's clearly printed as well.
The Hartke Kilo is 1,000 watts @ 4ohms bridged mono mode. 500 watts @ 2 ohms.
Despite the wrong info on the amps Geezer used or uses, I did enjoy the video.
And in your previous video, you did not include the VIGIER BASSES that Geezer also used.
Check part 3 for the Viger basses whichbass.co.uk/know-your-bass-player/geezer-butler-bass-rack-rig-bonus-content
