The speed of the growth of the Shanghai metro ever since the 2006s and the 2011s is terrifying astonishingly mind blowing. When my dad arrived in Shanghai in 2006, there was only line 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 who were barely long. But now in 2024, there are 19 metro lines.

When I worked in Shanghai, line 15 work was on going, I lived near Guilin Road metro station. Line 15 line from Guilin road till Guilin park was in construction. used to go to the Walmart near Guilin Road station.
In 2007/2008, after the construction of metro line 8, the initial name for the southern end of this metro is actually Aerospace Museum. I remembered this because as a kid back then who just moved to that area in 2007, I was legit excited to see that museum. Later that plan got canceled and I believed the government renamed it Shendu Highway in 2009. Just some little details you might have missed. This video honestly gives me anxiety about how fast the time passed by. It was 14 years ago! It is amazing how my hometown has developed so much for the last few decades!
I was born there and stayed until 2020. Line 13 (the one that disappeared) was build temperarily for 2010 Shanghai Expo. The management and the quality of the new line is always improving. The problem is some of the lines are too long and you have to be patient enough to sit for hours. For example, if you want to go to the south east part (Dishui Lake) from the city center. It would take about 2.5 hrs, which is make it slower than car (1.5 hrs).

Some minor issues: If you decide to keep the name changes, there are a lot that you didn’t cover, like 浦东中央公园 to 世纪公园, 船厂路 to 后滩 etc. The 锦江乐园 station in Line 1 was opened together with the other four stations. There was another segment of line 1, from 虹梅路 to 莘庄, and passengers have to transfer from 虹梅路 station to 锦江乐园 station back then. But not for long, the original 锦江乐园 station was abandoned, and only the 虹梅路 station was kept, and the two segments of line 1 were connected together. Then, 虹梅路 station was renamed to 锦江乐园 station.

2. Oriental Sports Center is formerly known as "Jiyang Road (济阳路)" (But that name is literally used for a month only and changed LOL)
3. Middle Longhua Road is formerly known as "Chuanchang Road (船厂路)" (Changed name at the end of 2012)
I really liked 4. I wanted to ride it nonstop as a kid but I never did. Easy to get lost, and if I rode 3 accidentally then I will get very lost
WHY CAN'T NEW YORK EXPAND LIKE THIS? WE CAN'T EVEN GET THREE NEW STATIONS.
Because US has passed this "national construction" period, and the cost to start again is too high now.
Alternative answer: big oil and auto manufacturing companies have lobbied Republicans (mostly) tirelessly for decades to stop public transport development in the USA, because they make billions of dollars every year from selling petrol and cars to every single American who is forced to sit in horrendous traffic for hours every day.
Because when The Highway Act was signed, we knew they won't develop public transport.
@@Kelastris Yeah, public transport initiatives have been actively sabotaged by lobbyists. The US has the industrial backbone to pull off large infrastructure projects as well, but the powers that be have made sure that the expertise needed for these construction projects stay dormant.
@@BZY-bu9wr The only way on how to fix US public transport is by making lobbying illegal. However, it will be almost impossible to do that, since the entirety of the GOP party is made up of Lobbyists.

Nice work real smooth and I can appreciate the effort of putting every station name in. Thank you.

Wow what an extensive metro system so many lines stretching out far but shanghai is one of the world's largest cities and will probably get bigger so a huge metro system is needed
They require a second urban rail system, not more slower segregated metros. They have enough of these now.

Love your work! There was probably one tiny mistake though. When "Oriental Sports Center" station was first opened in April 2011, it was named "Jiyang Road"; so in 2009, the trains just passed through this "left-over" station, but didnt stop at it, meaning this station was not opened. This station was opened at April 27th, 2011, not in 2009. And back in 2009, the Oriental Sports Center was still underconstruction.
In May 2011, to cooperate with the FINA Aquatic Championship event(世泳赛), the station name was changed to Oriental Sports Center. There are still other tiny mistakes detected, but doesn't affect the overall result. No offense, still, love your work!

Молодец
The speed of the growth of the Shanghai metro ever since the 2006s and the 2011s is terrifying astonishingly mind blowing. When my dad arrived in Shanghai in 2006, there was only line 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 who were barely long. But now in 2024, there are 19 metro lines.

Great video!!!

Shanghai's Metro system is comparable to S-Bahn in Frankfurt. Distance between each station is about 1-2 kilometers in the city center. In some suburb lines such as line 16, the first two station from Longyang Road to Luoshan Road is already 8 kilometers, it is also comparable with S1/S2 in Frankfurt, from Hauptbahnhof to Nied.. But the ticket in Shanghai is much cheaper than in German..
I'm shocked at how up to date this video is. Can't wait to see the next one in 10 years😂

airport line is being built. From pudong to hongqiao only 40min。
would have maglev connecting the two airports if not for protestors.
@@WangGanChang I didn't think that was possible in China. But it's the norm in India.
@@anarghyasumanth8590 yeah, the original plan was to link the maglev to the airport and hsr station in hongqiao with a downtown stop
and then continue to Hangzhou. But protesters stopped it, now maglev stops just outside of city core and a regular hsr goto Hangzhou.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai%E2%80%93Hangzhou_maglev_line
just search "Shanghai maglev protest" on youtube and you can lots of videos. It's one of the reason RUclips got banned in China.
Well it wil take 2 and half hours... The two airports are not that close. Even driving from city center to Pudong is going to take 45 minute... The fastest way is the Maglev (takes 10 minutes terminates at Longyang Road, you still need to use taxi or other metros to get to Hongqiao Airport). People usually won't brother to take it if they are just commuting and or not living close to the Longyang Road (which is quite true, the station was in the near-suburb of Shanghai).
So better wait for the 200km/h airport communiting line, built using CRH high-speed trains which if I recall it correctly only have four stops along the line.
This system's way more interconnected than what they have in Atlanta here in Georgia
As a Shanghainese I want a copy of the metro map in this video...colorful, precise and up to date.

Some minor issues:
If you decide to keep the name changes, there are a lot that you didn’t cover, like 浦东中央公园 to 世纪公园, 船厂路 to 后滩 etc.
