After this video the APO-1S is now sold out for North America. A new batch of knives are to be expected in June 2021. If you want to get a reminder please write me an email
    survivallilly@mailbox.org.
Also let me know your location like e.g. US, Canada or other countries. I will put you on a mailing list, and you will get notified when the knife is available again.
In my European store I still have a couple of pieces left but we only sell to Europe anymore. Soon we will be sold out in Europe as well. New knives will roll in in June 2021.

I got my APO a couple weeks ago. I haven't put it through it's paces the way I've seen some others have. The abuse this tool takes without failure is impressive. When I hold this tool I feel confidence that I can use it for things I'd never want to intentionally put a knife through and know that without complaint it'll perform and not lose any of it's power which is exactly what you need in a survival situation.
Lilly, please consider making an APO folder for EDC.
Oh one more thing, please make it easier to switch the sheath to left draw and then sell them for us leftie survivalists :)

@@FrauWNiemand I'm sure that's been done. I'm not saying it shouldn't be laid out how superior the APO is, but there are vids out there where guys genuinely try to break this thing with drills and sledge hammers and hack saws. Stuff no 'normal' survival situation would call for and I think the only thing I saw that showed a 'weakness' was having the APO driven into a log with a sledge hammer as if it was a splitting wedge and then beaten sideways into a 90 degree angle [and it didn't break]. Lilly's APO is one tough fvkng tool.

As someone who has studied knife design/blade geometry for decades, and collected (i.e. used) technical knives for almost 40 years, I can appreciate the field testing and work that has gone into this final design. The key points I look for in a survival-style knife...
    1. Blade geometry of saber, or flat, or possibly a saber-modified Scandi. This allows for toughness when batoning, yet can still cleanly slice an apple or bread, or even filet a fish or debone a deer. A carving style blade benefits from a slight curve along the spine towards the tip, and a chopping style knife benefits from a mostly flat/straight design to retain strength in batoning. The flatter the blade, the weaker for batoning and boring holes, but better for food prep and making super-thin cuts in wood. The more towards a Scandi design, the stronger it is, but is a bit of a butcher on foods and certain cuts. It's all about a balance between what you are doing and in what environment. No one blade design can do it all perfectly.
    2. STAINLESS STEEL. I'm so over 'high carbon' steels. They are way over hyped IMHO. They are superb in a nice Deba, Kiritsuke, or Yanagiba for veggies and sashimi in the kitchen, and when you can instantly clean them every time. But in the field, not so good. The tradeoff of high strength and rust vs almost as high strength and no rust is a no-brainer if you are anywhere near humid or salt enviros, or even just cutting acidic foods like fruits. I'll never understand the hype over 1095 as it rusts like crazy anywhere near salt or acid. SS will still spark a firesteel if given the right grind on the spine and the type of SS is good but sparking is my least concern when there are better strikers in a smaller (and safer) form factor. Getting rust in your food is not a good look, greatly weakens the blade, and getting accidentally cut with a rusty blade is a no-go for long-term survival. Accept the tradeoff with confidence.
    3. Removable handle scales. Nice Allen or hex head Stainless bolts are very nice. Even better with flathead screws that are easier to field maintain/remove when you forget your hex (or star) key. Water will eventually creep into the handles via capillary action. Rust can develop, especially in high carbon steels, and you need to be able to remove the scales to clean it every so often. Adding a small hidden stash area inside the thicker handles can also be a huge benefit as long as it doesn't affect workable strength. This can also allow a better balance option.
    4. Strikeable pommel, extended tang. A full tang design that allows pommel strikes for driving into wood is very beneficial. The key is making the pommel flat to allow for a solid strike. (Knife designers, please stop with the undercut or 'glass breaker' spiked pommels!! I've never once had an issue with breaking glass, and doing it with my hand so close to the breaking glass is not a good survival technique if you cut your wrist in the process. Also, most people will eventually push the knife into the sheath on the pommel, and a spiked pommel will also catch and tear your expensive rainjacket or backpack fabric in the wrong situation. This is perhaps the most overlooked design aspect I see on most knives. PROUD TANG design is also good for when you drop your knife so it doesn't bust your handles, or you are having to baton the knife to remove it from a log and it won't mar your handles. The trick is keeping the proud tang ergonomic. A lanyard hole in the end is also a must.
    5. Balance and proper weight for the job. Too heavy and it wears you out while carving those items for an extended camp stay. Too light and it doesn't have the inertia for many cutting tasks, especially chopping. While I appreciate ultralight gear for long-distance backpacking or hunting, a little weight in the blade can make tasks much easier and quicker by requiring far fewer strikes and chops.
    6. KYDEX SHEATH. Leather is beautiful and has a wonderful warm feel....but when it gets wet its useless. It retains moisture which is a blade killer, and when it dries it always forms slightly different than the original form. It also tends to loosen over time, especially at the belt loop, retention areas. Kydex has a more tactical look, which can be the wrong look in public, but it just has a better function in more places. The main downfall of Kydex is that is gets very tight in super cold weather, but this is better than leather freezing and cracking with moisture. The Kydex needs rivet/mounting holes on all sides for better mounting/carry options, and a two-piece design is normally better than a taco style. A retention strap that can tuck away during heavy use but will lock in the knife during travel, especially on horseback or over rough terrain in the mountains or over water is crucial for making sure that knife stays put when you need it. Extra points for a stealthy sheath with zero rattle! (Zombies have great hearing lol).
    7. Jimping...I can take it or leave it. It's nice on a larger chopping style blade but most jimping is too aggressive for a carving style knife that is in your hand for hours at a time. Sometimes jimping can be your best friend when striking a firesteel, but can also tear your thumb up in extended carving when delicate cuts are required.
    8. Handle material...I prefer function over form. Wood is beautiful and light, but in a survival situation, you'll likely find yourself carving new handles because you just broke your gorgeous walnut handle. G10 is excellent stuff, albeit a bit heavy, but a great grip. Micarta is nice but absorbs sweat and dirt like crazy, and can be VERY heavy.
    9. Handle Ergonomics...It doesn't get much better than the Mora style designs for comfort. A slight palm swell, and a very slight forward guard to keep the hand from slipping up onto the blade, and a slight rounded swell at the pommel to allow for swing chopping is what I always look for in a larger knife. These finger grooves in some of the bushcraft knives look awesome but they will give you hotspots very quickly in long-term carving.
    10. Price...some of the overhyped well-known knives that are selling for $150-300 range are rarely worth it. Once you go over $120 in a knife, it better be premium steel and a perfect design. Inlays and other cosmetic additions are great for collectors and eye candy but often can lead to failures in the survival field. FUNCTION OVER FORM is crucial and the price needs to reflect long-term durability, edge retention, and comfortable function.
With this said, it would be great to see the same design in a smaller carving EDC style version...3.5"-3.9" blade length, to get under that 4" restriction limit, under a 9" overall length, and a 3.2mm-4.5mm thick blade, strikeable pommel (flat), lanyard hole, saber or modified saber-Scandi drop point, and under 6oz for the knife itself, Kydex sheath with good Scout carry option, rounded spine but sparkable pommel, removable scales, and M390 or N690, Elmax, CMP, or similar style Stainless steel...something that would compete and be a lighter version compared to the LionSTEEL M4, Guardian 3/4, and the EESE 3 stainless style knives. That is the all-around bushcraft/field knife/EDC sweet spot.

Excellent write up. Very informative! I agree on the crap 1095. It's just not for me as I live near the coast. Requires constant oiling and sharpening too.
You mention the Lionsteel m4 but have you tried the T5? It is very similar style to Survival Lilly APO design but smaller and much lighter. You might like it even better than m4.

    • @AlanHowellphotovideo
      @AlanHowellphotovideo 3 года назад +1

@@syke3796 Yes, I should have mentioned that. I picked up a T5 when it first came out and it's a superb all-rounder. It's a near perfect 1-2 week bush knife with an upgraded sheath.
If I'm going on a long extended trip that requires lots of chopping then something a bit larger like an APO was usually what I wanted. However, lately, I've opted to just take a small 8" folding saw instead of a larger chopping style knife or axe and it greatly helps reduce weight/easier to carry on long backpacking trips and is much quicker to process most wood tasks. I gladly sold an EESE 4-3D to get the T5 and it was well worth the upgrade, to say the least. (Also FAR FAR better than my previously retired TOPS B.O.B. that just took way too much maintenance!!!).
But yes, coated or uncoated, 1095 just can't compare to Niolox steel. I only need to sharpen the T5 maybe once a week compared to once daily with the TOPS or EESE 1095. Those complaining about 'hard to sharpen' steels overlook this increased edge retention for efficiency in the field. Hard to sharpen simply means a dozen extra passes on the diamond sharpener...literally just seconds of difference...for hours or days worth of a better edge. For EESE or TOPS to sell their knife for a similar price to the T5 is just selling the name. The T5's steel is far superior in every way.
For the money, in a bushcrafter, I also think the M4 even better than the Benchmade Bushcrafter 162, and that's saying a lot because the 162 is an outstanding CPM bush knife. The M4 has just as good as steel but you can field maintain the tang if needed.

My APO1S is in the mail right now from Canada. You’ve come a long way from when I first started following your outdoors journey when you were just AloneWolverine1984! Watched your first attempt at a raised bed in the woods (which collapsed!) but you pivoted to making a small fish weir in a stream. Preparing a deer in your Mom’s kitchen you shot. Long way through many outdoor journeys to today - you stuck with it!
I will gladly carry your knife in the woods! The steel naysayers need to learn to sharpen their knives in the woods! I would rather sharpen my blade daily than have a lesser, thinner knife fail.
Keep on keeping on, Lilly! All those making negative comments have probably never spent a night alone in the woods!

I got the APO-1 as soon as the 2nd batch was available. It was quite sharp out of the box, and it feels almost custom-made for my hand. I have never had that experience with any other production knife. Anyone who thinks it is too pricey is living in the past. It is very robust and well designed for all the functions desired in a survival knife. I don't think there is a better bargain in a bushcraft/survival knife anywhere.

Almost want to buy it but after looking it for the price on amazon, i cancel my mind.. $150 for a new branded knife with aus8 and no detail on the heat treat detail or HRC, nevermind, the aus8 sharpness will be gone in single use of batoning and chopping, that steel is not even enough to be use on my edc pocket knife.. i can get a m4 steel knife from reputable company for the same price.. m4 is the way to go for outdoor hard use.

Steel is all about the method of treatment ,and different makers of steel can have better quality than another.
Will not find all the bells and whistles this knife has for under $200 USD...G10 with liners is executive goodies.
Jimping on spine, nice sheath..For use around Salt, must either be coated which hinders food grade slicing,or stainless..
AUS8 done up right is great,AEB-L is another. 440c etc
Cold Steel is not giving all bells and whistles these have.
Cold Steel have factories in Taiwan as well but they are production performance knives, hers are more custom.
I have AUS8 choppers that hold edge chopping as great as 5160 or 1095..
I am getting one of the new models, was sold out of the black patina, but heading back.
I usually like Carbon and I use Johnson's floor wax to protect everything (people must read can) and slick my blades.
But after some time using AUS8 or AEB-L-440C ,I like the stainless..
      I can tell are worthy.
The grind has much to do with how they act chopping..

In my humble opinion CPM3V would make this knife perfect and a lot of people would be interested to have it, the design is very good and people will pay for the superior steel. The only stainless steel that should be on a survival knife in my opinion is M390 or CPM 20 CV. But 3V has enough alloy to resist rust, you may only have minor surface rust. And a survival knife should always be cleaned and cared for. Thanks for the video Lilly.

He uses boiled orange juice to finish weapons parts to an almost Blued/Parkerized patina, which resists surface rust. You can also use boiled apple cider vinegar.
And a good lubricant to use is Froglube. It's also food-safe, so you can use it on blades that you use for food prep. 🤙

I used to buy multiple cheapo knives under the mistaken idea that a knife is a knife. My fiancé stayed after me to spend a lot of money on one really good knife that could take abuse and last me a lifetime. Every time I put a high dollar name brand knife into a shopping cart I could never follow through with the purchase...
Then I saw you using your knife in a video and I just knew that this was my knife and that I would be willing to spend BIG to get it.
I looked at the Canadian website where they were in stock and read the reviews which were impressive. One mentioned a video where a guy totally abuses it, then brings it back to perfection. I watched the video and that sealed the deal. Much to my fiancé's surprise I bought it less than 5 minutes later (he's so proud lol)!
I received my knife two weeks ago and haven't had a chance to use it yet, though I carry it with me wherever I go...you know...just in case shtf and I have to trek 5 days home. My fiancé is always wanting to look at it and dropping hints about wanting one. Maybe I'll give him one as a wedding gift (in April) because I don't think I can keep mine hidden until his birthday (in August).
I haven't looked at another knife since. Thanks so much for creating a fine knife/tool... I look forward to a lifetime of bushcrafting and homesteading with it ❤️

Makes it easier to turn the knife in your hand. Anyway, I found his comments interesting, because he is "in the field" for days at a time, and *working* all the time, so really works with the knife as a tool. Alles bestens

I'm only a beginner as far as survival camping and equipment goes so don't feel qualified to comment on how good or bad your knife is,nor do I own one but I am very grateful for your explanations because it will help me decide what direction I would want to go when I am ready to buy a more expensive knife. That said your knife is a lot cheaper then some of the ones I've seen recommended in other reviews.

You'll never please everyone in a single design.
My view a "survival knife" criteria in order are.
Edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance.ease of sharpening.
AUS8 is not on my short list of steels at all.

Aus8 is a fine steel! Not everyone is a master sharpener. Are there better compromises with those four variables, yes! But then the price tag goes up. She also wanted her knife to be purchasable for the average consumer. A fifth criterion. It is. It’s good quality, tough, handsome, g10, enough carbon to be hard, enough chromium to be resistant, and you can sharpen it in the field with a small stone. It might be a perfect compromise with those variables.

I understand what you're saying about stainless. I almost always agree with you. Not today! I've never had a SS knife that I could keep an edge on. I prefer carbon steel that I only need to sharpen once a week. I use a knife EVERY day, not just weekend camping. AND, as for the apocalypse....a knife may not be enough😁.
I like all the features of your knives, especially that they're FULL TANG, extra thick through the handles. Tough!

I bought one of the original APO-1, and also one of the Hunters. I love both of them very much. If you do a lot or work around camp, especially batoning these knives are more than up to the task. Very sturdy. I agree the handle on the APO-1 could be slightly larger, but I have large hands. The only problem I have encountered was that the screws loosened on the APO-1 and fell out in the woods, and are lost. Any suggestions where I could new ones.

Aus 8 is a fine choice for a survival knife. It's a tool that's expected to take impacts so toughness should be valued above all else. There's a reason you never see axes made from high hardness super steels.

      @bassackwards8422 3 года назад +1

Lilly, it is very difficult to make a small business work, when faced with govt taxes, controls, etc. You would be lucky of you make $15 per knife. Then the start up costs must be repaid. I don't think you will ever make money, but the experience and knowing that you have done something worth while is fulfilling. I hope you succeed.

This is great documentation of the real-world scenarios with knife blade getting in salt water. If you want to eliminate the rust completely (with only a slight patina) you can try Evapo-Rust. The instructions say it’s safe and non-toxic, and can be poured down the drain. It takes about 12 hours to completely remove rust, you can even leave the screws in-place. It will come out looking (almost) new - only minor pitting from material already lost to rust.
