Thanks for this great review, I am happy you enjoy your APO-1. For all these who are complaining about AUS8 steel,... the APO-1 will be soon available in another steel as well. Which one is still a secret :) ATB Lilly
Let us know when you find out lol Nothing wrong with Aus8 at all for this purpose though I'm looking forward to the other steel too. Thanks for the design Lilly.
My gosh... - A HIGHLY functional design - No superfluous, gimmicky features or add-ons - A "working steel" (no exotic metallurgy) and stainless to boot - A reasonable price point Congrats, mein fraulein! That's one excellent knife you designed!
I like the design, reminds me of some other one, maybe fallkniven type design, bowtie type I dunno, but it looks like it will work, an I don't get twisted up over steels, most of them are really good anyway, but I'm a carbon steel type of guy, to old school. An Brian, I would just like to say thank you for being a scoutmaster an taking our youth to the woods an teaching them lifesaving skills instead of computer/gaming/ tv skills, real outdoor stuff, from one old scout to another.
I'm glad to hear you say 14 point six seven ounces, so many people say 14 point sixty seven ounces, I was always taught at school to say individual numbers after the decimal point as my maths teacher use to say " They are NOT whole numbers merely part of a whole number"
You are right every knife is a compromise and not for everyone. I have watched several Survival Lilly videos. She went on a island survival stint and took along a Falkniven knife, which she broke. She took it upon herself to design a knife that she felt would meet her needs and not fail. She also was designing the knife to come in at a price point where many people could afford the knife. That is why she used the AUS8 steel in the knife. Its is rugged, tough, and holds an edge. Also it is a high quality steel without breaking the bank with a Super Steel cost. You see, all compromise. I am not defending her. She does not need defending. The knife is a good honest blade for the bush craft genre. Its stainless and will serve most people for decades. If taken care of you could pass it along to the next generation. Excellent review, I enjoyed it, keep up the good work. Mitch
The knife is absolutely gorgeous in my opinion. The blade has a traditional shape, but with the extra crisp edges and the angles she’s put into it, it’s like an update. It’s like a Jony Ive design in a knife. The handle is very nice too. Very clean. The whole knife is clean and fresh. I hope to gosh that the knife is still available when I can afford it. I watched her video on the knife and all the details she designed into it made perfect sense to me. I’m not aware of her missing any points. I’ve read great stuff about that steel too. Taiwan is a free country. Glad we’re supporting them over China.
*Aus 8 is a steel companies use on prototypes because it's cheap... Also the sheath dulls the edge. I bought one and sent it back after 1 use. It looks good... That's it.*
Cool looking knife. Solid build. Lost me at Aus-8; stainless is a winner but needs to be higher quality. Plus I would prefer a good choil and partial serration. But I got excited for about 90 seconds. I also like Survival Lilly (and Brian).
Kudos to Lilly, it looks like a very competent blade design and execution! And, yes, ANYONE and EVERYONE is qualified to design a knife. Anyone that questions that or trolls the idea is of course exactly that, a troll.
I bought so many nights and have been given so many knives that I could come up with a knife because of the inspiration of all the different knife designs that I've got.
That actually looks like a nice knife. The objections are predictable, but also without merit outside of personal preference. I see a lot of "SRK" in the comments where this knife is talked about. First off... It's not an SRK. Even I can see that. And the SRK is hardly some original blade design. It's just the one that came to your mind first. It may have inspired it, but that's just about every knife ever. Even after years of RUclips, people still don't understand that "reminding you of something" does not equate to being a copy. There are literally limitless variables to knives, and millions of knives on the market. It's nearly impossible to make anything that doesn't reminded somebody of something. Next...AUS8 steel. In the age of 3V, Elmax, and A8 Mod, we too soon dismiss steels that are WIDELY used and for good reason. Cold Steel used a lot of AUS8. It's not about the name is the steel so much as where it was sourced and how well it was heat treated. People look down their nose as 440C these days, but in the right hands (like Ray Ennis at Entrek) it still holds up as one of the first "super steels" because he knows how to bring out the best from 440C. AUS8 is a reasonable choice if you want to produce a stainless knife that doesn't break your wallet. This looks to be about $127-ish USD, which seems reasonable based on this knife. Keep in mind this is me thinking out loud looking at it on a video. I've never handled it. I probably wouldn't review it just because it gets sticky if it's another RUclipsr/Knife Designer due to the appearance of quid-pro-quo. Which is why I didn't want David at UST reviewing any of my stuff. Good for her for making her ideal knife. Nobody is forced to buy it if they don't want it. A truth that to this day I do not grasp why people don't understand. They act like someone is trying to shove the box in their hand and reaching for their wallet. It's an option. Either like it or don't, either way is fine.
Great response. The funny part to me is how people on the interwebs will jump on somebody for stating their opinion. I like Lilly, I follow all her channels and I will continue to, but the APO while nice enough, is not for me in it's current configuration. My personal opinion is $127US is too expensive for an AUS8 knife made in Taiwan. I don't consider that bashing anybody or anything, it's just my PERSONAL opinion. Anybody and everybody who likes it, hey it's your opinion and your wallet, by all means have it. NOT saying it's a bad knife, NOT saying it's not an interesting design... But I can think of many examples of knives made in the US or EU made of higher quality materials (or the same ones, but NOT made in Taiwan, yes I admit I am biased) at that same price point or LESS. I am very interested in seeing what the new material will be. Waiting for the flamers to jump on me thinking I am somehow "bashing" Lilly or her design. (I'm not) :-)
@ Survival On Purpose A 1$ kitchen knife would pass your test successfully. No hater, not angry, no sexism against Lilly. Just facts. Do heavy tasks to test a survival knife, anything else is irrelevant. And many think AUS8 is not a good choice for a beast, edge retention is poor. Remember how Lilly tested Fällkniven S1 ? Maybe heat treatment is good, and make this knife better than usual AUS8, but your test isn’t conclusive. Too kind to be fair.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose I think that some people also often forget that good design usually can outweigh the use of "lesser" steels, but it dosn't really go the other way around. I would much rather have a well designed knife in AUS8 than a worse designed slab of Elmax. I think it's a great design, and it adresses most of my criticims of both the SRK and the S1, and in a reasonable price too. Sure, it's not 3V, but so what? AUS8 is a decent steel that can do pretty much anything necessary in most areas of the world.
Hi Brian it's Mark I just wanted to let you know I think it's a nice knife and if anybody can create a good knife it will be somebody who uses it all the time and then my opinion she works hard doing her Bushcraft so she definitely knows what she's doing and in my opinion that's the best designer of a knife you could get she has different types of Steel that you could get it says she's trying to keep the prices right and from what I understand she knows even if it's not the best metal she can choose the best metal for that price that's just my opinion but it's a great video Brian thanks from mark
When I watch you throw knives, remind me not to piss you off. Nice job on the review Brian. I totally agree with you on Survival Lily.... a COOL and very capable lady
Taiwan is a quality producer. Don't know why so many look down on Taiwan. It is a modern country with a large high tech industry, and many very modern factories. As one who paid full price for a made in the USA Gerber Centerdrive with brittle steel tools that chip and break, I now look at good reviews of each tool separately, and pay no attention to country of origin. If Lily's knife proves to be durable, then it is a fair price. We all know that heat treatment tells the most important story for most of us. I have 40 and 50 year old Victorinox pocket knives in use still, and many reviewers call their steel junk. So, Lily's knife looks great, and I very much hope it is durable, and makes her a decent income. Good, thick survival knives are not common. Bad and mediocre ones are. Thanks for the review. Please do give it a long-term test. And Chris's and David's knives, too. Long term truly tells the tale. We need more hard testing over time for survival knives. DESPERATELY!
I agree 100%! No body is better to design a knife than someone who uses them alto and usually they are the best! Example, the kephart knife. Great video.
Yes, another excellent and thorough review. Since this review was made 2years ago, I’ve purchased her newer model, the APO 2. It’s an excellent and very well made knife and functions very well.
Way over priced for the materials used. I like the AUS8, never had any problems with it but its not for me at that price, it's just a modded cold steel SRK and i can get that new for a lot less. My last knife was £135 and i would pay more for a knife i wanted so it's not like i can't afford the APO, I'm not sold by over priced budget materials and famous youtubers
Will the knife become better if she happened to be less successful on RUclips? Is that what you are saying? I think I have seen a lot thinner blades (lacking the APO-1 extra features) using AUS8 and they are fine general purpose knifes. I want a heavier, thicker, blade and the APO-1 does have some positive weight, a good thing if you must swing and hack with the blade on wood. Being a small, starting up, business, with small production batches, I would guess it must be a very tough challange to compete on price alone. Anyways, seems a variant is on the way with another steel.
To be honest I prefer my CS SRK in Aus-8a, cost about a third less, same steel, similar sheath, similar overall design. For the money of a APO-1 I can get a san mai SRK.
I have the first edition of the APO-1, purchased the hour it was released. I love it, it replaced my old custom forged Seax, and I thought nothing would replace it. I like the steel, and for MY use, it is good. I would not mind replacing the screws, if possible, but I have no remorse with the purchase and seeing the changes. I am glad Survival Lilly has made changes and upgrades. Always grow and change as needed. TheAPO-1 will be at my side for years to come.
Good review for a good product. I'd trust Lillys opinion all day long. As for battoning wood, we could all argue for or against all day. I like doing it cos its kinda fun, and it beats scrounging for twigs. It also gives you something to do for half an hour to break up the long nights on a solo camp. Hats off to you sir for showing Lilly the respect she deserves. Gary. Hertfordshire England.
Aside from what others already mentioned on obvious differences, my APO-1 does not fit in the factory made Cold steel SRK replacement sheath I bought for my SRK carbon V. The knifes seems to share some requirements and conceptual ideas of how to full fill these requirements. Very logical, common and reasonable. There are others that is more or less similar for this very reason… (Fällkniven?). Who cares? I think she make an effort to consider the requirements that most professionals in the field often speaks of when describing the essential concepts of an ideal survival knife, then added a few features.
Good review, Bryan. I like what you said about someone designing a knife. 13:28. If a knife works for you, then fine. I'll be on the lookout for a new stump top for ya...
It looks like Lilly made a darned good knife to me and she's offering it at a good price. I'm not surprised, she's always had a good eye for gear and she's not afraid to stress test any of it until it breaks to find out what it can, or can't, do, so she had a good grounding in reality when it came time to design her own. Good review Bryan, thanks again.
I'm not familiar with her at all, but I feel like for that price there are better options. The SRK is available in better steels with a similar sheath for a better price.
She used an SRK for quite awhile. Her's is similar with G10 scales and an exposed tang pommel. The retention straps and belt/molle loops are better too. I'm itching to find out what her other steel option will be. She likes the AUS8 because it doesn't chip on her.
For the average person who isn't that hard on knives or can just buy a new one if something happens to the one they have, it is a bit expensive. For someone who really depends on their knife for heavy use often, it makes sense to spend the extra money. I like the SRK design, but hers is better in every way for its intended purpose. You could do just fine with an SRK, but I doubt it would hold up as well for as long.
I've been looking for a way to sharpen a machete without filing it down can you think of a way to do that I've seen the old timer sharpner but a machete is different
I love Survival Lily and I agree she is a heckuva talent in what she shows us. Wish I was that good. I am not sure about the knife since, for my purposes, cheaper knives are more than adequate. If I get a windfall, I would still buy one just to support her. Thanks for your review. I always cringe when someone stabs a knife into wood and bends it over. I would never do that. I know it is to show how tough it is but I just can't imagine needing a knife that tough (or doing that to a knife). Thanks again.
Good for Lilly. It's nice to see people expanding their horizons. I don't personally like the design, or the choice of steel. With that said, she has already made a couple of upgrades. I hope she continues to pursue perfection, whatever that may be. If you are like me and don't care for the knife, then don't buy it. If you just want a knife and don't particularly care about longevity, then this knife is for you.
I want one eventually......maybe in a tougher steel----but mostly because Lilly is AWESOME and I want to own one of her knives.I think she is onto something with this hybrid sort of combat and survival clip point vibe....my favorite knives tend to follow those lines most of the time....thank's Lilly!! You're awesome....
That is a really well thought out knife and a great sheath which usually is not the case have been following lily for 5 years now nice knife I think I might need to get one thanks Brian for showing it off
Thanks, Bryan. It is a bit pricey, but I've never had a problem with AUS 8 out of Taiwan...it's a fine steel, very tough and easy to sharpen. Cannot argue with one thing you said, I love that about your channel and keep up the great work!
A year later and I still love the knife (Lilly has made a slightly bigger version now) SOG uses aus-8 and charges $80-$90 with less steel than the apo-1...shipping $$$ is the only downside and I just chalked that up to support for a small business owner fee...Oh and to date I've yet to see anyone do anything in the field with a super steel including field sharpening away chips and rolls...I find that very interesting.
Please explain more like why is there the small notch at the place where the blade meets the handle I'm new to kniife design and wonder about those subtle things could you at least send me to a link
I've been following her as she developed this knife. If anyone knows knives she's on top of my list. Time for Dutch Bushcraft to take a wack at it. Great looking knife, thinking about ordering one in the future. Here goes to credit card balance.
*AND it comes with a self-dulling sheath! Yes, friends, after pulling the knife out a dozen or so times, you, too, will have an edge as sharp as a marble! I somewhat regret buying mine because the knife is great but I don't have enough money left to pay for a decent sheath. SO if you order one, allow yourself another 30 to 40 bucks to have a decent sheath made.*
I would happily let you have mine for a week if you think it is an exaggeration. Maybe you get a better sheath, I don't know, but mine has dulled the edge to the point that it will not even cut paper cleanly. The knife has not been used to cut anything at all except paper, three times. I would offer to let you have it forever but I hope to sell it for a low price to recover something of the cost.
That totally makes sense since her favorite knife for years was in fact the SRK. The handle really looks like a "Survive Knives" handle. I hope she does well with her knife.
@Norse Woodman "its a mirrior immage with an exposed tang." not true. I am holding my Cold Steel SRK Carbon V (made in USA) and an APO-1 and they are not a mirror image. The APO-1 cant even fit into the SRK sheath. The APO-1 clearly has a few features that the SRK DOES NOT have.
@Norse Woodman Hehe, I hope not. Also, I like to test things now and then to build up my knowledge some. When being out solo for longer times and/or planning to do a particular thing, I always have a spare knife or an extra/special knife (or saw or axe) for a specific job I know beforehand I would do. As much as I trust my old srk, I prefer other knifes in daily life, away or at home. Have a few very unexpensive mora knifes for example (great bang for the buck inmo, but not the choice in other situations in which I can choose tool beforehand). If I have a knife for 20+ years, I think the initial high cost is paid back, we will see how APO-1 do, too early to tell I think.
I have the APO-1 (ver 1 if you will has the steal screws for the handle). My wife and I both like it. Between the two of us we also have a traditional Ka-Bar, BK Ka-Bar BK2, and a Ontario Bushcraft Woodsman. Of all 4 the APO-1 is the most balanced of the 4. We use our knives hiking and camping. I admit very small collection of knives of all types, this is one of our favorites. Lilly read your post a different type of steel, waiting to see that one.
Brian, how many steps back did you have to take to calibrate that knife? It would be great if you also report what is the closest distance you could throw a knife. I am just wondering how this knife stack up against the other knife that Survival Lilly had high regard for, the Cold Steel SRK?
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Hi, Brian. Thanks for responding. I was speaking from an Engineer's perspective. When you say a knife is balanced, I take it you mean if the knife can be thrown at a target. Obviously, the closer the center of gravity is to the tip of the knife, the better it throws. It looks like the APO-1 had to take more tumbles before its tip found the way forward. So, the closer to the target you could throw the knife is a measure of how well the knife could be thrown.
Thanks Brian great video as always was thinking of buying a new knife couldn't decide Wich one to get now I know both yours and Lilley chanel are well thought out and put together with lots of amazing information Keep up the good work Darren from the UK
all this job which is shown in video is bushcrafting process... not enough for survival. we all must show urban survival skills. in urban situation knives works differently. (Just we love nature so much, we always test knives for woodworking :) ) Thanks for Lilly for creating this knife and for creating this video.
I know you typically don’t need to worry about it in Tennessee... but in really cold temperatures Velcro fails. It needs to be backed up with snaps or other closure options. Thanks for the video! The knife looks good!
Seems like Survival Lilly took her favourite Cold Steel SRK and made some modifications on it, mostly on the handle, to make it look more like the Fallkniven A1 and... boom !; the APO-1 was born. Anyone for copyrights infringement ?.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose You're probably right, we can't re-invent the wheel only attempt to make it better; I meant no disrespect to Lilly, I actually like her posts, just a bit disappointed with the lack of originality of her blade. Sadly we live on a world of Lawyers, they dictate our destiny in many cases; I suppose Lynn Thompson's Lawyers will have the final word on this one. Great review anyways Brian !; I'm a long time subscriber of your Channel : )
I like it, its not to large or small, seems to have a good look not to aggressive looks like an everyday knife for lite or rugged bush-crafting but also cooking and everything else.
That looks like a sweet knife, I always enjoy your channel and seeing her knife on here makes it even funner to watch. I think it would be a great knife to have. thanks again for taking the time to make this video and have a blessed week. Dale
No matter how much you like Lilly. You should think long and hard about buying this knife , you could purchase a knife made from quality steel with a good looking and practical sheath for the same money. If celebrity endorsement is your thing , then go right ahead .
quality steel? Very unspecific. As for good looks, I think function is more important. That said, making an effort and making a personal new sheath can make it up to yourself to get both function and looks. When getting a new factory made cold steel sheath for my old srk carbon v, I got a sheath very similar to the sheath for my APO-1. Not the same, but very similar (the APO-1 will not fit into the factory made srk sheath). The factory made sheath feels like a minor thing as it feels a lot easier to make a custom sheath compared to make the blade itself, thus I get the blades and make a sheath of my own. As for what you call "celebrity endorsement", I would generally prefer the person having actual skill and understanding, building this up year after year, than any random short lived celebrity just having looks, big mouth and/or very active agent and/or choosing to sell their name for branding to be used by others? Lilly does not put "Lilly" on her blade, she appear to actually field test the blade and uses it personally and her producers seems to make small batches of blades. So why not support a small, personal, business? You make it sound that is must be bad just because she have had some success within bush craft and survivalist on RUclips. Btw, the APO-1 ready made sharp angle for firesteels are the best I have seen, felt and used. Better than what I have done myself when setting up such an sharp angle on other knifes. Not a bad thing on a survival knife.
Brian, a great review. I am subscribed to Survival Lilly's channel as well and saw her review of the knife and started looking at purchasing one. Of course I did the conversion, and after I did that, well lets say it will be a while. Being a one income family I will have to save up some of the cash, but I want that knife!! I have a Condor Bushlore, in fact two of them, one with micarta scales and one with wood scales. I have a Schrade SCHF-52 that I like and then I just recently acquired a Morakniv Companion and also the Garberg full tank Mora. I have done video reviews, not as well as yours on all of these except the Mora's, I am working on that video now. Being from WV and living in the outdoors, hunting, fishing and hiking a really good knife is essential. Thanks for all your reviews you do cause the material you cover fits just about any scenario out there that a person might come across. Juddie - J & J True Outdoor Adventures.
Good review,,I agree ,I think it's a good knife....as any who watched her testing videos,Lily is much harder on her knives than I ever am...She put her own knife through the same tests that she does for any other ,not just the pro-features....Her changes (and they were minor)came after rough use in a rough environment,,she corrected issues that she found,...to me that shows pride in her creation, ,rather then let the consumer deal with as most would....I don't know for fact, but I doubt MOST of the knife makers out there even come close to her R&D,I have not seen pre-production videos on ANY of the more well known makers.......Many good designs and materials, but I haven't seen field tests from major brands except AFTER production by consumers....In my opinion ..WELL DONE, LILLY............
Aus8 is about equal to 440 stainless. Lilly used it to hit a price point so more people could afford it. She designed it because her Falkkniven knife failed on a video where she was camping on a island. Tip broke. The knife is robust, sharp, and holds an edge . Nuff said.
I may question the metallurgy, but the functionality is there. Actually I like the shape and as you said, as a long time user she will be able to determine the features needed for a good wilderness knife
You are CORRECT. Anyone who uses knives can design a knife. Same for backpack, attire, headlamps. Preferences are called preferences for a reason. As soon as I saw the knife in the video clip in the side list I found it interesting that A You Tuber designed one. We should encourage people when they step up and do things, even as simple as going outdoors and doing vids. Upon opening the video, I immediately found it attractive in design and anyone with vision for knives can tell the shape etc is functional. Your review just confirmed it.
Hello Buddy. I have a question to your ferro rod. Could you Tell me where i can find this flamethrower? Wow...I'm Suprised. Thx for your time to answer me!
I really like the APO-1, mine is a v1 with the blue-gray micarta handles, that I bought some month ago and have carried along on several hiking/bushcrafting adventures of the weekend and evening kind. In my opinion Lilly found the sweet spot of size and weight. The knife is hefty enough to be a chopper, yet still agile enough to do carving. The handle is very comfortable in my large (size 11) hand too. Being left handed I really like the flexibility of the sheath-system, it is reversible! I have no opinion on the steel used, except that it has held up well so far. As a computer geek I'm no expert on steel, but from her videos I believe Lilly knows tons more than I on that topic, so I trust her choice.
It's all subjective bruv, the type of steel is dependent for use your not gonna use a chef knife for bush crafting and vice versa. I grabbed all black version keep it in SHTF bag as secondary and TOPS Tom Brown Tracker as primary(that's just my preference) I use a Grizzly for bushcrafting and a Gerber for camping. It's called Apo for apocalypse it's made to last a lot of abuse for those who don't have a lot of experience with handling and keeping knives. I live by when you need it and don't have it you sing a different tune, but I also have close to 50 knives so I don't worry about not having one at hand.
@@ericmatt2368 What is it with people acting like a bunch of crazed, cackling old hens over these knife reviews? They act the fate of world is at stake and many of them probably never set foot outside their trailers. I don't think you could pay me enough money have a youtube channel. It's crazy
Love your comments on RUclips knife designers. I made my own knives for a while and MY knives suit ME. that's what matters, My Scouts use and like my knives to.
I like the knife. Looks like it has a great fit and finish. It is expensive for aus8 but I understand that it's not a highly mass produced knife either. By the way, I love survivor Lilly's videos. Reminds me of my youth playing out in the woods. God bless
Seems like a fair review. Best of luck to Lilly and any RUclipsr that tries their best. A lot of keyboard warriors have opinions but they are not out there showing what they got. Makes me wonder what steel Kephart and Daniel Boone used and how it would compare to the steel used in this knife. This knife seems more than capable.
Does anyone who actually owns one know how well it does with field sharpening and edge retention? I'm really interested in that knife, just waiting for more feedback on it.
Sounds like a good solid knife. I know of a company in Alabama that the knife prices are a bit more. But I haven't check the shipping cost for myself to here in Florida. Great video.
Brian,I was wondering if you've seen this fire starter? I found it and haven't used it yet. I believe they're $1, multiple uses . It's called INSTAFIRE fire starter. Back in the camping section.
Lilly made the perfect knife for the way she uses a knife. It's not the knife I'd take first, but that's not because the knife is wrong, but because I use knives differently, and I take a hatchet. I can carry the extra kilogram to do it my way, but my way is not the only way. So that's the trick, the test you need to set for yourself when considering what to take. "How will I be using which tools to do which tasks, and which tools will do them best as I ask?"
Good review. I do like the knife and the sheath. You can tell where she got her inspiration but that's cool. We all get our inspiration somewhere. If I was going to design a knife as a one tool option it would pretty much have the same qualities and look but I would sure loose the jimping. I do like Aus 8 steel for a rugged camp knife or even for a food prep fine carving one. I have used the steel in many knives for many years and it's tough and you can still get a good edge with ease. I'm always curious if the handle part of the blank is skeletonized. It reduces weight but weakens the construction. Maybe you can explain the purpose of jimping because you review a lot of Schrade and they almost all have jimping. I have NEVER found a use for it. The price for the APO is another thing most of all for us Europeans. We have to add tax. 150 US dollar for Aus 8 is already a steep price I would say. Add 21% European tax to that and it becomes even more expensive for Aus 8. For that money there are knives made of Elmax available or other so called supersteels. The price comes very close even to a handmade knife made of Elmax by a skilled knifemaker. The brand name is TRC knives. And funny enough that knifemaker (Andrius Tricius) facebook.com/trc.knives/ has been producing a knife model called the Apocalypse for many years already. I use the TRC model Bushcraft. No jimping on it ;) and made of Elmax. Atb from Holland
I subbed to lilly a few years now and DBk I think the fact you made a good knife and it's out good for you...I would like to suggest for the 3.0 version is to put a diamond sharpener inside the sheath so when it pulled out it sharpens it.
Thanks Brian! Lilly knows as much about knives as anyone on here, and a lot more than some, but you just reviewed it for what it is and, having watched a few of your vids now, I’m confident that, whoever had designed it, if you thought it was 💩 you’d tell us so - very clearly! 😊 ATB, Mark.
The whole reason we can buy great and better knives is because of the knife RUclips Channels. If a certain knife fails or has problems the whole knife world knows about it because of them and sales drop and the companies reputation is on the line. I really appreciate the channels out there, the blade designs and critiques that come from them. In short it's awesome. I'm just a guy who likes knives. I have very little experience with real hard usage on any of them. How cool it is to search on RUclips and see the reviews. In my opinion YOU are an expert on the topic of knives. Thanks for the work you put into these reviews. I appreciate it. I think Lily's design is solid. I like the exposed tang, the handles, the ease of sharpening Aus 8. The sheath is awesome!
It’s a great knife. It doesn’t feel like an SRK in hand. It’s heavier for a start and feels like it wants to chop. It feels more like a falkniven. I really like mine.
Thanks for this great review, I am happy you enjoy your APO-1. For all these who are complaining about AUS8 steel,... the APO-1 will be soon available in another steel as well. Which one is still a secret :) ATB Lilly
Lilly, there's a lot of jealous and butt hurt people out there. Keep up the good work.
I think the knife performed very well. And the fit and finish is excellent.
Let us know when you find out lol Nothing wrong with Aus8 at all for this purpose though I'm looking forward to the other steel too. Thanks for the design Lilly.
My gosh...
- A HIGHLY functional design
- No superfluous, gimmicky features or add-ons
- A "working steel" (no exotic metallurgy) and stainless to boot
- A reasonable price point
Congrats, mein fraulein!
Mitch
Thanks Mitch
Watch the test of Lilly"s knife on the DBK Channel !
Anyone who has ever tested and reviewed a knife is qualified to design one.
It isn't a spaceship.
*Aus 8 is a steel companies use on prototypes because it's cheap... Also the sheath dulls the edge. I bought one and sent it back after 1 use. It looks good... That's it.*
You are like the Hickok45 but of the knife world. You come of honest and likeable. Good video.
I completely agree Chris. I think some people just gotta be negative.
True that!
She did a nice job! Im buying one!!! Thanks Brian!!!
Yes, another excellent and thorough review.
Since this review was made 2years ago, I’ve purchased her newer model, the APO 2.
It’s an excellent and very well made knife and functions very well.
Thanks for the review, go Lilly!
Thanks for your review! I like Lilly. I’m going to get one of her knives.
another professional and honest video Brian, thanks for posting
To be honest I prefer my CS SRK in Aus-8a, cost about a third less, same steel, similar sheath, similar overall design. For the money of a APO-1 I can get a san mai SRK.
OK
One of the best knives I have ever seen, so Thank You kind sir, and Thank You Lilly.
the Apocolyips-1 looks like a good design, looks tough and congrats Lilly on 1M subs
She Designed the Cold Steel SRK. Amazing
with removable scales an a pommel
It is an influence, but this looks a lot better. Especially the handle.

@@JohnC29 Lilly did what the SRK should be! A full-tang and not a rat-tail full-tang wannabe!
The angle on that swedge is way too steep(yikes).
Wow. Been watching for years. Just realized Balance Orientation And Rotation Device. BOARD. Lol. I'm a little slow.
I've been looking for a way to sharpen a machete without filing it down can you think of a way to do that I've seen the old timer sharpner but a machete is different
Depends on how dull it is. You might need to use a file and then one of those sharpening pucks. Or a grinding wheel
Thanks
Sean Brando:- Wait a year or so, and they will be showing up on the secondary / used market at 1/2 price.
Good review as always I have purchased some items based on your reviews and have been satisfied with them all thank you
I really like the look of the APO1, and am glad to see that it works well on carving feathers and starting fires. I just need to save up my pennies.
Excellent review. Happy to learn of your scouting connection, it adds a realism to your videos...always be prepared.
That is a sharpening choil. It just helps get the edge sharp close to he handle.
That stump test was impressive!!! I was waiting for a bend or a break, but nothing! Nice
I was impressed with her knife. It is well made.
I've been following her as she developed this knife. If anyone knows knives she's on top of my list. Time for Dutch Bushcraft to take a wack at it.
Great looking knife, thinking about ordering one in the future. Here goes to credit card balance.
James:- DBK has done a review of this knife...it FAILED in all but one category.
I think that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I did notice the sheath seems to drag the edge. I think I mentioned that.
I would happily let you have mine for a week if you think it is an exaggeration. Maybe you get a better sheath, I don't know, but mine has dulled the edge to the point that it will not even cut paper cleanly. The knife has not been used to cut anything at all except paper, three times. I would offer to let you have it forever but I hope to sell it for a low price to recover something of the cost.
it reminds me to a Cold Steel SRK and the Fallkniven
That totally makes sense since her favorite knife for years was in fact the SRK. The handle really looks like a "Survive Knives" handle.
I hope she does well with her knife.
Yup, she was trying to fix the flaws of those two specifically into a new creation.
Similar yes. Inspired by? Very probably. Very natural, common and logical.
What ferro rod are you using in this video?
*That is an exact copy of the Cild Steel SRK with a Survive Knives GSO lanyard hold.*
Thanks for the review Brian! I like this knife more every time I see it. Might need to get one.
I enjoyed the review, but did you use the sharp side of the knife to strike the ferro rod, and not the spine?
no
Looks like really good fit and finish from the video, good job on the review Brother.
My dad was a scout master. Respect!
Brian, how many steps back did you have to take to calibrate that knife? It would be great if you also report what is the closest distance you could throw a knife. I am just wondering how this knife stack up against the other knife that Survival Lilly had high regard for, the Cold Steel SRK?
There are no minimums. It depends on who is throwing and how they are throwing it.
You didn't mention her reasons for choosing the metal she did. Ease of sharpening in the field and bends instead of chips or breaks.
I know you typically don’t need to worry about it in Tennessee... but in really cold temperatures Velcro fails. It needs to be backed up with snaps or other closure options.
Thanks for the video! The knife looks good!
Hes in GA...HOT and humid as all get out
Really like this design... winner!
Seems like Survival Lilly took her favourite Cold Steel SRK and made some modifications on it, mostly on the handle, to make it look more like the Fallkniven A1 and... boom !; the APO-1 was born. Anyone for copyrights infringement ?.
Using is that thought process, every single made manufacturer would Be infringing upon whoever made the First blade out of a piece of rock.
She did a great job on the knife and importantly also the sheath!
I like it, its not to large or small, seems to have a good look not to aggressive looks like an everyday knife for lite or rugged bush-crafting but also cooking and everything else.
Survival Lilly is my spirit animal
That looks like a sweet knife, I always enjoy your channel and seeing her knife on here makes it even funner to watch. I think it would be a great knife to have. thanks again for taking the time to make this video and have a blessed week.

Not a bad thing on a survival knife.
ghanaboyz Dutch bushcraft knives just compared/tested her knife against her old srk. Didn't do too well. Watch the rope cut test.
Looks nice for the price. Good work.
Brian, I have been waiting for someone to do a review of the Cudeman 299b for a long time. There is one or two reviews but most are not in English.
Lilly is awesome, she's the real deal not just a pretty face.
Great Review Brother. And Some Fine Knife Aerobatics too. Thanks, the cold air is arriving here in SC. Stay warm in GA.
More than burgers, Buddy.
Aus8 is about equal to 440 stainless. Lilly used it to hit a price point so more people could afford it. She designed it because her Falkkniven knife failed on a video where she was camping on a island. Tip broke. The knife is robust, sharp, and holds an edge . Nuff said.
Would you choose that over a fällkniven? Just asking because really remind me of one.
I bought a cheap cheese grader to turn some lightered wood into saw dust. It worked awesome. I keep bags of it in all of my bags.
I may question the metallurgy, but the functionality is there. Actually I like the shape and as you said, as a long time user she will be able to determine the features needed for a good wilderness knife
Thanks
Great video as always. Three years passed, so it might be the time to do that long term review ;)
Thanks
Hello Buddy. I have a question to your ferro rod. Could you Tell me where i can find this flamethrower? Wow...I'm Suprised. Thx for your time to answer me!
Not sure anymore. It is a Schrade large ferro rod
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Thank you my Dear! I woll try to getroffen one of These. Have a good Day!
It looks very close to the Ontario RD6 not sure about the AUS8 but i do understand why she decided on stainless
Paul It seemed to make you angry. That was not my goal. I was trying to explain my choice, no more. Since that failed, I deleted it.
@Paul ignore the small minded they only bring us down. The best response to a fool is silence
Cool
I like the knife. Looks like it has a great fit and finish. It is expensive for aus8 but I understand that it's not a highly mass produced knife either. By the way, I love survivor Lilly's videos. Reminds me of my youth playing out in the woods. God bless
Seems like a fair review. Best of luck to Lilly and any RUclipsr that tries their best. A lot of keyboard warriors have opinions but they are not out there showing what they got. Makes me wonder what steel Kephart and Daniel Boone used and how it would compare to the steel used in this knife. This knife seems more than capable.
Exactly! You nailed it about the steel.
Does anyone who actually owns one know how well it does with field sharpening and edge retention? I'm really interested in that knife, just waiting for more feedback on it.
@ Sam Smith very easy to sharpen with DC4 but poor edge retention (inherent to AUS8 steel) you must often sharpen it
@@jls2975 Thanks, not a huge deal breaker for me. Love the thickness on that puppy. Might hold out to see what other steel she's talking about using.
Looks like a great knife! Thanks for the review.
For SHTF I have my OKC RD6 with a custom kydex sheath.
Cool
lol photo bombed by the fuzzy tail on the fence lol loved the video buddy awesome job
;-)

Do they have a male version?
Great video! Just for my own education, what wood is considered fat wood?
It is resin impregnated evergreen. Mostly pine
I subbed to lilly a few years now and DBk I think the fact you made a good knife and it's out good for you...I would like to suggest for the 3.0 version is to put a diamond sharpener inside the sheath so when it pulled out it sharpens it.
cool idea
Thanks Brian! Lilly knows as much about knives as anyone on here, and a lot more than some, but you just reviewed it for what it is and, having watched a few of your vids now, I’m confident that, whoever had designed it, if you thought it was 💩 you’d tell us so - very clearly! 😊 ATB, Mark.
Actually, if I thought it was crap I would not take time to review it.
Indeed.
Lily is awesome.
Thanks for the great review.
Thanks for watching.
It’s a great knife. It doesn’t feel like an SRK in hand. It’s heavier for a start and feels like it wants to chop. It feels more like a falkniven. I really like mine.
