I still get surprised at how light birds are, and how heavy mammals are. Is that truly just from bone density? Becuase the fact that similarly sized swan and elephant having more than 280 kg of difference blows my mind. Then again, elephants are pretty massive, and I assume most mammals of that size weren't that heavy.
I think the difference also comes from birds having additional airways and chambers, which lower the overall density quite a lot. I've heard it speculated that one of the reasons dinosaurs were able to get so large is because of that system of improved respiration and lower relative mass.
They are not that similarly sized. The swan is long and skinny and the elephant is stocky but has a muuch larger body. Just look at them and forget the neck and wings

If you kept selecting from the largest Whoopers and Trumpeters, you wouldn't get *exactly* that, but you'd get something impressive. You couldn't put them on Malta these days, though, because the climate is a lot hotter than in the days of Cygnus falconeri, which probably died out because Malta had become an island, it had gotten too big to fly north, and it fried.
I love swans and geese but I don't know about confronting a Giant Swan and trying to hand feed it. To be honest I think it is a bad time to be traveling especially when you are older.

Well, Cygnus Falconeri doesn't look that much of a giant when compared to modern swans. It was only slightly bigger. But it would be still fascinating to have seen how similar and different it was from the swan species we know today.

Well, Cygnus Falconeri doesn't look that much of a giant when compared to modern swans. It was only slightly bigger. But it would be still fascinating to have seen how similar and different it was from the swan species we know today.
Do one on the "Delcourts giant gecko" the largest species of. Gecko that ever lived and went extinct 300 years ago.

It is unbelievably saddening to me that there are very few species of elephants, and a very few individual elephants on this world today. They are absolutely brilliant quadrupedal people and I'd love to meet at least one of them in person someday.
