I still get surprised at how light birds are, and how heavy mammals are. Is that truly just from bone density? Becuase the fact that similarly sized swan and elephant having more than 280 kg of difference blows my mind.
Then again, elephants are pretty massive, and I assume most mammals of that size weren't that heavy.

I think the difference also comes from birds having additional airways and chambers, which lower the overall density quite a lot.

Fun fact; The whooper swan is the national bird of Finland and is featured on the Finnish 1 euro coin. There's also many tales and legends of these birds in the Pagan Finnish folklore, most notably the Tuonenjoutsen roughly translated to the "Swan of Doom" or literally "the swan of the land of the dead".
Rockpaintings depicting a swimming/floating swan are an iconic image from the pre-history of the finnish people. It is said that killing one of these sacred birds meant certain death and doom for the perpetrator.

Then again, elephants are pretty massive, and I assume most mammals of that size weren't that heavy.
