A Giant Extinct Swan

- At one point in time giant swans inhabited Sicily and Malta alongside dwarf elephants, resulting in a pretty unique ecosystem. But what were these swans - Cygnus falconeri - like when they were alive?

@Anna K I'm guessing you didn't read the whole thread?
Of course there's a giant prehistoric swan.
There's a giant prehistoric version of everything other than whales. God, i wish could travel back in time...
Whales had minature versions of themselves, with small baleen whales. Same for tiny elephants and tiny horses.
@@presidenttogekiss635 Whales actually became true giants relatively recently in last 3 millions of years. When last ice age started and Megalodon go extinct.

Fiona Embleton I looked it up swans do you honk but you’re probably thinking of the mute swan which typically does not honk.
Honk if Thatcher's dead.

Cursed swan
I also remember that time when i saw an idiot trying to be funny in the comment section.

All these "elephant sized swan" comments forgetting these were dwarf elephants shorter than humans.
Robert Culen nice try illustrators!!
Dwarf elephants sized swan still far less scarier than if you call it human sized swan
@@c.dundee4313 the illustrators did fine and captured the size proportions, most of these people in these comments though are misinterpreting them.
I love this channel, but I feel like the channel is at fault here.
They should have been more specific about the size.
@@FuzzyLittleBastard well the video did show a picture to scale and mentioned that they were dwarf elephants, I think a lot of people in these comments missed that.
and the ugly duckling became a beautiful swan, and proceeded to stomp all the ducks that bullied him as a child into a pulpy, bloody mess

Yep, that’s totally in character for a swan!
That one duck who called him small: holy shi-
And the geese, and the signs warning of passer-bys of its presence XD
That’s the dark ending
Question of the day: Would you rather fight one elephant sized swan or 30 swan sized elephants?
Elephant Sized Swan is basically a dinosaur, so I'll take my chances with the mini-elephants.
NazRigar and also i think elephants wont really fight you either, but a swan of any size wont think twice.
You ever pissed off a swan??? Now make it dinosaur size, and you pretty much have Godzilla...
@@Prof.BiggusChungus Exactly.
How strong are these mini elephants?
Swans are scary enough when they get angry.
Danmark and it’s beautiful fucking swans. These motherfuckers are aggressive and I’ve been attacked more then 5 times. Cool national bird to have but people don’t realise how dangerous they can be
i was mugged by one for a bag of corn

but still if you kill one the queen doesn’t care how solid your bones are she’ll put you in her embryo smoothie machine
Wanna hear the something very sad?
Probably not but okay
There is a large park that I went to,it had massive, beautiful swans that would go up to you (no,they would not start ripping you to shreds) they would make these adorable sounds and were friendly,I wanted to hug or at least pet one S O M U C H but I decided not too,I felt that they would still rip me to shreds, but here is the sad bit (no I didn't witness it) apperently a teenager FUCKING KICKED ONE OF THESE GRACEFUL,CUTE SWANS,AND HE FUCKING KILLED IT,JUST TO SHOW OFF. TO HIS FRIENDS
I got trampled by one when I was 5 or 6 years old.
This is legitimately unnerving. Imagine the temper of a swan but now it's twice as big.
Maybe they were like dogs, where they get nicer as they get bigger
Birds are honestly some of the most interesting things on our planet. Mini elephants would’ve been a spectacle. I wish I was capable of time travel JUST so that I could see some these amazing creatures.

Where do you think those European folklore originate from.
Its way too small, those are dwarf elephants its compared to
I still get surprised at how light birds are, and how heavy mammals are. Is that truly just from bone density? Becuase the fact that similarly sized swan and elephant having more than 280 kg of difference blows my mind.
Then again, elephants are pretty massive, and I assume most mammals of that size weren't that heavy.
I don't think that's a modern elephant, but more likely the dwarf elephant mentioned.
I think the difference also comes from birds having additional airways and chambers, which lower the overall density quite a lot.
I've heard it speculated that one of the reasons dinosaurs were able to get so large is because of that system of improved respiration and lower relative mass.
They are not that similarly sized. The swan is long and skinny and the elephant is stocky but has a muuch larger body. Just look at them and forget the neck and wings
@@Vespuchian yes you are correct
I think bird skeletons weigh similarly to mammals. They just have less marrow and thicker bone walls.
I find it hilarious that its prehistoric ancestor is just an enlarge version of itself. No saber teeth, armor, wool, or any other unique prehistoric abilities. Just bigger.
Trust me, it don't need nothin' more.

I saw one cross a whole lake just because a dog was taking a swim. There was plenty of room but no, it went all the way just to hiss at the dog.
Swans are impressive. Mute swans are very much so, but they cannot, contrary to what some alarmists claim, drive out trumpeter swans. If trumpeters want a nesting site occupied by mutes, they're likely to kill them.
Now, picture Cygnus Falconeri, apparently closely related to the whooper and the trumpeter...only bigger.
@@naka8919 Invasive?! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Ok dummest person I’ve ever seen. The only ducks, geese or swan that are invasive are the domestic ones or the ones such as the Mandarin Duck and the Mute Swan that are not native to North America. 🤦🏾♂️🙄👎🏾
I don't have a good reputation within my local community of swans and geese, so now I know this thing existed I will never sleep again.
What about the extinct giant goose, garganornis?
Just awesome video. People sometimes forget that modern swans are powerful birds that don't shy away from a fight. Imagine these giants.

Why would she? To ride one if possible? I would if possible.
If you kept selecting from the largest Whoopers and Trumpeters, you wouldn't get *exactly* that, but you'd get something impressive. You couldn't put them on Malta these days, though, because the climate is a lot hotter than in the days of Cygnus falconeri, which probably died out because Malta had become an island, it had gotten too big to fly north, and it fried.

Fun fact; The whooper swan is the national bird of Finland and is featured on the Finnish 1 euro coin. There's also many tales and legends of these birds in the Pagan Finnish folklore, most notably the Tuonenjoutsen roughly translated to the "Swan of Doom" or literally "the swan of the land of the dead".
Rockpaintings depicting a swimming/floating swan are an iconic image from the pre-history of the finnish people. It is said that killing one of these sacred birds meant certain death and doom for the perpetrator.
My daughter and I managed to get caught up between two swans fighting in the park.
They are indeed very imposing when angry and determined.

It's weird that I quite never thought of swans as real animals that need to avoid predators and find food. They always felt like some kind of magic fairy-elve-like creature.
