I just randomly had James Earl Jones's voice in my head as a kid, doing this spot for the network television debut, saying "The Empire Strikes Back." (Hadn't heard this since a little kid when it aired). Googled it. Found this. It's definitely from back in the day, pre-internet, when movies weren't widely available everywhere, and having them air on TV was a big deal. VHS tapes weren't even in every household yet, though dad and I sat and recorded it while trying to cut commercials. What a different time.
@@thewewguy8t88 I used to think that was cool when people went outside the characters for something else. it verified something to me when I was little. I dont know what. it just felt like cool water on a warm day.
At the time it was either this, or nothing. Well maybe a trip to the video store or Best Buy, but who would spend $49.99 on a VHS tape back in the day?
I still have this on a VHS tape, but the very beginning was missed - being able to see this uncut promo is fantastic. Probably the best promo for a TV version movie ever.
I actually still have a VHS with this intro on it. It was the first time I saw ESB as a kid. I had actually seen Jedi in the theater before I ever saw Empire.
When the voice overs had feelings that made you shiver to your spine. A time trip back to the good old days, things weren't perfect back then,by any stretch of the imagination...but it's better than the world we live in now. Before the dark times, before the pandemic
We need the vertical black bars on the side of the screen so we can see this intro as it was shown when it first aired ... no widescreen TV's at the time, LOL. This is nostalgic, and it was a big "event" night on TV that year. Good memories.
71k people understood what it felt like to see a movie for the first time on network television! We prepared a week in advance. Our VHS players were prepped and ready to record.
Three years earlier, CBS gave us the network television debut of A New Hope. On this night, it was no less epic... especially with this intro. It was an EVENT.
Nbc still does Sunday movie night today but rarely the movies that they recently showed just neighbors, ted, ted 2, a black and white film that I can't remember what is the name is, despicable me 1 and 2, and a fast and the furious movie but with no intros for Sunday night movie unfortunately..
"We interrupt with a special message from the Galactic Empire!" Thanks, Lord Vader, for being nice enough to mess with subspace frequencies to tell us how dominant you were in 1980 when you righteously kicked Luke Skywalker's ass! BTW, how is your son, AKA "Cool Hand Luke"? LoL! Happy 40th to ESB! Let Lord Vader continue to dominate!!!! Force be with you!!!!🖖😘🌚😈😎
0:36 "Welcome. Through this intergalactic broadcast, your planet and thousands like it, are witnessing the glorious victory of the Galactic Empire. Tonight, we will finally crush Luke Skywalker and his Rebel Alliance. This time, there will be no escape from the dark side of the Force. When The Empire Strikes Back."
Love this introduction. Though part of me can only laugh at the idea of Darth Vader getting prepared in a recording studio. Instead of makeup, does someone apply extra polish to his mask?
the Roman numerals at the end of your video reads "MMXXII", and that would be 2022, it should be MMXII for the year 2012. Just figured i'd let you know that.
This video compilation has an NBC ad for this airing from earlier in the week with more dialogue from James Earl Jones: ruclips.net/video/erDftdGqhNU/видео.html
Cool to see. Unfortunate someone fucked with the aspect ratio though. I don't understand why so many people are determined to stretch, squeeze, squash and cut old images.

Tonight, We Will Finally Crush Luke Skywalker And His Rebel Alliance! This Time, There Will Be No Escape From The Dark Side Of The Force, When THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!
That was such an excellent lead in to the movie. Well done NBC. Wish they did stuff like that now.
Bro I was like 4 years old I saw this on TV the first time it was the coolest thing ever babe

Always thought it was neat they got James Earl Jones to record this special trailer for NBC.
Wonder if that cost a bunch.
@@camcordernonsense5264 well i mean his 3rd biggest role other then darth vader and mufsa is "this is cnn."

And now we have too much choice.
It was a magical time...
I still have this on a VHS tape, but the very beginning was missed - being able to see this uncut promo is fantastic. Probably the best promo for a TV version movie ever.
Whoa, this includes audio of Darth Vader actually saying "the Empire Strikes Back!" Awesome!
oh he said the name of the movie!
Saw this NBC movie when I was younger. Still sticks in my mind. Explains the star wars fascination.
R.I.P. James Earl Jones 😢
Omg I recorded this the night it aired on NBC
I use to watch the into over and over
erika rodriguez same!
Funny, I don't remember this airing. But...I recorded Return of the Jedi when it premiered on NBC.
SIMPS be like, "Hi, Erika! I agree!"
@@rypo59 You say that like the internet is a bad thing. It's a giant library, you illiterate clown.
I actually still have a VHS with this intro on it. It was the first time I saw ESB as a kid. I had actually seen Jedi in the theater before I ever saw Empire.
calminaeon same here.
I have the same thing on VHS
I don't think we had Return. Just the other two. I wonder why that is.
Soooooo loved the annual broadcasts of the original three Star Wars movies each year!!

Before the dark times, before the pandemic
"It will be a day long remembered" On that evening, I was truly surprised that NBC would do such a different way to introduce this film. It was fun.
Do you happen to know what that date was?
This was November 1987. NBC would never have premiered an expensive blockbuster in the summer.
Definitely November. I was in the first grade and my mother let me stay up to watch this.
Darth Vader:" welcome to this intergalactic broadcast!"-james earl jones as darth Vader
“And witness the glorious victory of the Galactic Empire”
So fitting to have it from the empires point of view!
got to love that orchestra music back in the day. i miss the old days. its nothing compared to the 80s and early 90s.
This was 1987....
I recorded this on VHS and edited out the commercials. Wore that tape out over the years.
I remember when NBC put this movie on their station like two or three times on NBC and they show it again for Anniversary of Star Wars.
Still can’t get over the power of James Earl Jones’ voice
Somewhere my dad has this recorded on VHS. We wore this out.
That was the message important of Darth Vader, without to tell everybody about Ezra Bridger, Ahsoka Tano and Bad Batch's existence

Still have this on a VHS somewheres! When movies used to play on TV back then, it was a huge deal
An elegant intro for a more civilized age.
Priceless
Thank you for posting this! May the force by with you…always!
Still coming back to this jem in 2023. Greatest movie intro of all time
James Earl Jones's Darth Vader's Voice Has Done It Again!
RIP James Earl Jones

my folks taped this back in the day. so my childhood version of this movie was a tv taped mix that just cut that bad ass intro!
I still have this on vhs that mom recorded for me!!
Whoa! That was amazing!

Wow watching that gave me the chills like it did back when I was 6 and saw it for the first time on TV lol
When TV was badass enough to get James Earl James to do your movie broadcast intro
hey cnn got him to say "this is cnn"
I love this ! thank you for sharing !
Impressive HD!
......most impressive
STAR WARS THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK ON NBC Sunday Night At The Movies!
The NBC intro music meant something was going to happen.
I remember this and recorded it on our new vcr!
"He said the thing!"
very cool. haven't seen that since 1991!
Three years earlier, CBS gave us the network television debut of A New Hope. On this night, it was no less epic... especially with this intro. It was an EVENT.
I think this makes me wanna watch it again...
So cool
I have the February 1991 broadcast of this same film
R.I.P. The Voice Of Darth Vader.
James Earl Jones.
1931-2024.
Best one ever
So cool!
Back when NBC stood for Nothing but cool!
Now, it's "Nothing But Crap".
“Nomore Bringingback ‘Community’”
Nothing but Communism
Still have this on VHS
Could you share the entire thing?
All my tapes got destroyed
You have a gold mine.
Now I just downloaded this! The only Star Wars film to air on NBC.

Two things. The aspect ratio isn’t correct and this aired in November during sweeps. No chance they debuted this in the summer.
We all saw this as kids in the 80s lol
RIP James Earl Jones THE voice of Darth Vader.
Does anyone what the aurebesh-esque script in yellow translates into?
RIP James Earl Jones

But Lord Vader that's your son.
First aired in late 1987, I think.
