- Here is the original 1980 70mm theatrical version of the ending for The Empire Strikes back. The audio was taken from an in-theatre recording back in 1980. Not only were there shots added to the 35mm theatrical version, but also lines of dialogue were different takes and extra dialogue was added
I just can believe how well this movie aged through the years, even kids from 2000's generetion get to love this movie.
I agree , I'm almost 13 and I'm a HUGE star wars fan , even my friends love it !
phenompy #i watched the whole thing 2015
I was born in 2001 and the originals has truly been a BIG part of my life, empire strikes back might be the best film in history!
I was born in 2003. Everyone my age loves the prequels. I really like them. But my dad showed me the originals first and I'm glad he did. Empire is my favourite film of all time.
they took time to get the script right. unllike disney who just wanted to rush any old movie into the cinema to make back the $4bn they gave Lucas.
It makes me quite emotional just how well made this movie is. Such loving attention to detail, timing music art, effects, costume. And seeing them so young and in their prime. Irving Kershner was a master craftsman. Such respect.
This movie is a masterpiece.
Best ever. Everytime I rewatch the old trio, this stands out high. Return of the Jedi is not bad either, but there I feel the Kenner effect, every scene is a collectible toy set.
Still gives me goosebumps. Best ending of all sw movies with great score by John Williams.
pete guit best ending goes to revenge of the sith
Blackops Zombieplaye1 granted the final showdown between obi and Anakin was epic, I think comparing the actual final couple of scenes from each is what makes Empire the winner. Sith had Vader yelling "noooooo" while clumsily acting like Frankenstein, and the not needed scenes of obi giving babies out to people after amidila pumped out two munchkins, haphazardly naming them and then dying. These were things not needed. Lucas would have been wise to not include them at all, so that the younger generation that he wanted to watch them in order would still be surprised that Anakin is Darth Vader, since they saw him last left for dead on Fire island by obi. They also would be surprised that dying amidila did indeed give birth, and would find that out in Jedi, when Luke finds out. Then these kids would think that it was really cool how the first three movies held back huge reveals for them. I guess I went off course.
Blackops Zombieplaye1 Not even close.
I agree. This ending gives me goosebumps. It’s definitely the music.
I agree - this is by far the best ending in Star Wars. It’s just so damn good. I remember walking out of the theater in 1980 and having to wait almost three years to find out if Han was alive or not. This movie took a lot of risks and was amazing
John William's music with George Lucas' vision is a combination of talent that will never be matched. What an aweaome ending!
lucas had not much to do with this movie. thats why its the best
@@amadikadem4311 and it to the toilet with disney

@@amadikadem4311 lol the main reason this movie is so good is because of George who do you think came up with “I am your father” and wanting the hero’s going on a darker path and creating the story for the episode
@@DayTripperrr might have or might not. The guy who originally wrote empire died while doing it. Doesnt change lucas is shit at directing. Harrison ford agrees
99% Of Viewers are unaware that this clip is a very early version of Empire that debuted in 1980. You may notice that 0:59 is missing the 1-2 second shot that pans from the falcon to the rooms where Luke, Leah, and droids are. The very first audiences to see ESB were confused about where the Falcon was in relation to where Luke's new hand is being attached. That pan shot was a post release addition to the 1980 theatrical run. There is brief footage of rebel fighters in this early version that was truncated in the better known cut to make room for the falcon to medical room pan.
Good call, and yeah - the way you describe it is how I remembered it for years - not the least reason for which was because I got the vinyl LP of the soundtrack when the movie came out (the double gatefold packaging, "starfield" cover w/Vader's face and the great full color booklet inside, etc.) and I played that album constantly till it wore out.... and I was confused when I saw it in re-release as to why the very beginning of the music for that scene no longer synced up exactly with the album version - because I distinctly remembered it doing so back in 1980 when I first saw the movie.
I definitely prefer the starfighter additions. It drives the point better that this is the Rebels on the run.
Yes, remember that they also cut the rest of the 48 minutes from empire strike back.
I love that you know this, thank you!!
No, George Lucas for whatever reason was the only person who thought the scene was problematic, and did to Kersnher what he'd always complained about studios doing to him.
Among all of the incredible moments in ESB, 2:16 remains my absolute favorite. No dialogue, just the endearing characters we became emotionally invested in. Where are these people going and what's going to happen to them? We cared because our heroes were written to reflect the virtues and flaws we would recognize in ourselves or others. They don't make movies like this no more!
Not to mention that John Williams Score was perfect for the moment. Something lacking in the Force Awakens TBH
There is virtually *nothing* relatable about the sequel trilogy characters. Nothing. That is one of several reason the Disney efforts are not real star wars. I felt nothing watching tfa. I got so bored that I just zoned out about halfway through.
@@generalzod7959 tfa sucks
Yeah so sure that gets me every time since my very first viewing in May 1980 in 70mm! Oh man, such a magical sense or wonder and mystery.
Yes, that is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time! Ah man I still remember seeing that in 70mm with the glorious 6-track Dolby Mag mix on a giant screen, just something so utterly magical about staring off into space with the characters at that galaxy and all the wonder. Got me totally back then in 1980 and still does every single time since. I even saw it at the exact same theater this audio recording was made at too!
I was in the theater for this in 1980 when it came out... Unforgettable experience. Nothing really like it since.
Me too.
Except for that cliffhanger, eh?
@@AlexGarcia-ze4yg Yeah...and I think that's why most of us weren't really THAT freaked out by what Vader revealed to Luke towards the end. We honestly thought "Hmm, maybe he's lying. Guess we'll find out in the next movie" and that was kinda it. But when Jedi came along, it sort of cast everything in a different light. Wish I could describe it better.
@@johnd.obrien6838 Yeah that's how I remembered it too... for three years we all kinda just wondered what the heck it all meant. I was a kid in elementary school at the time I feel like there was so much speculation about if Vader was his father or not there wasn't a popular consensus that he was in fact his father, at least not in my neighborhood and at school... also three years pondering who is the other hope that Yoda spoke of?
Star Wars/Lucas lost its way at this moment in time. I remember sitting in the theater watching Jedi opening day and felt the tone shift at Jabba's palace, it wasn't how I wanted to see Star Wars go (I liked the serious tone that Empire had). I was 13 years old and I did some mental gymnastics while watching to not hate the direction it went lol.
Anyways, rambling now, I am so happy to have Andor because it feels to me like the same tone that was set in Empire Strikes Back.
@@ichigen511Rogue One is also serious and also features Andor. Recommended if you haven't seen.
love that 70mm quality in glorious 360p
I'd love to hear the audience's reaction to when Vader tells Luke that he's his father.
You can find a recording online. No noise. Just shock and confusion
RetroGamerAaron Me too! you can find recordings of the trailer for ESB and stuff, but I would really love to hear how people first reacted to the "I am your Father" bit.
It must have really been something...
TheSoloTrooper. Where?
Yeah
RetroGamerAaron SPOILER ALERT! Just kidding.
Quite touching to see Luke's first use of his new hand to hold Leia
Yes. I don't think we've ever seen such subtle and authentic expressions of friendship in a big special effects movie as we did in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Love how the Empire crew are looking like (referring to Vader) - "Who's he gonna kill?"
Well, there's another reason they called Vader's ship The Executor! 😅😅😅

Best ending ever and one of the best movies ever
Funny, yesterday I read someone saying the ending was weak. "That's it? They just stand there?" I'm trying to think what could have been better.
Leia to Luke: "I don't want to sleep alone."
Still my fave movie of all time. I have the dvd original theatrical version from June 1980 i believe, and although a bit different from the 1980 May release, is good enough for me. It has none of the special edition nonsense from 1997 or 2004 versions.
This “Finale” is simply the most beautiful soundtrack piece ever made by mankind. I still have the LP with the OST for ESB bought in the 80’s. May the universe bless John Williams for doing that marvel.
John Williams is the man
Love hearing the audience cheer when the Falcon goes to lightspeed. Crowdpleaseing earned from a well told story of characters we care about

1980 was such a brilliant and great year for movies and I really love The Empire Strikes Back. 1980 was the year of The Empire Strikes Back, The Shining with Jack Nicholson, The Blues Brothers, Raging Bull, Caddyshack, Airplane!, Stir Crazy, The Elephant Man, and Superman II with Christopher Reeve. The Empire Strikes Back is a spectacular and great Star Wars film, it is my second favorite Star Wars film along with Star Wars 1977, and The Empire Strikes Back had stellar direction by Irvin Kershner. I also love The Shining, The Blues Brothers, and Superman II. The Shining with Jack Nicholson is a brilliant classic Stanley Kubrick film, The Blues Brothers is one of my all time favorite films, and Superman II was a very good Superman film.
Overall, 1980 was one of the best movie years. I always loved The Empire Strikes Back, The Empire Strikes Back had a satisfying cliffhanger ending that led to Return of the Jedi in 1983, and The Empire Strikes Back as well as The Shining with Jack Nicholson, The Blues Brothers, Raging Bull, Caddyshack, and Superman II are my top 6 favorite films of 1980.
Unbelievable what you find on RUclips! Decades ago I had read that the ending had been slightly tweaked because audience reactions indicated that there was some confusion about where Chewie and Lando were in relation to where Luke and Leah were aboard the medical ship. The addition was the 1 second shot that pans from the observation window to the falcon, but I notice that the initial Xwing flyby at the beginning of the rebel fleet scene was lost in favor of the new shot. Much thanks!
This is very cool to be able to hear actual first audience reactions. Thanks for upping
That would be cool to hear. I’ve heard from people that saw it in 1980 and they claimed the audience was dead silent/shocked from the reveal .
To anyone asking about Lando wearing Han's clothes, there's three serious and solid answers:
(1) This is a fan-answer, so canonization is up in the air. Han's clothes in "A New Hope" were a uniform of the Collerian Core group. It's plausible that Lando served in that same core and had a similar wardrobe. In short, it's nothing more than an old army uniform that had no intention of significance.
(2) Lando was in a rush to lead Leia, Chewie and the others out of Cloud City (even advising "EVERYONE to leave before more Imperial Troops arrive), thus he didn't have time to pack a spare wardrobe for himself. With the Falcon having made the jump to lightspeed, Lando was able to get freshened up to help in the search for Han. With no extra clothes for himself, he had to borrow Han's ANH wardrobe (or at least his shirt and vest since we see him only from the chest up in the final scenes).
(3) The out-of-movie explanation is that Harrison Ford didn't want to play Han for the next movie to come, and Lucas didn't know if he would convinced Harrison to change his mind. So if worst came to worst, Lando wearing Han's clothes was meant to symbolize that he would be filling in Han's role for the rest of the series.
Not to mention this was a year before Raiders of the Lost Ark where Ford ended up playing another cinematic icon and hero of another big franchise and the film also making Ford’s reputation as an actor even bigger than Star Wars and more in demand with other directors like Ridley Scott and Peter Weir.
I've seen this a million times and here I am crying finally. Thank you!!
I always liked to imagine wedge was in that first x wing flyby
the fucking applause at the end. it is beautiful to hear the excitement of these people.
Our heroes have escaped once more...thanks too...R2-D2!!
This takes me back to when it was all New,and these characters were just becoming like family to us!
R2 is the hero of every movie. He shot Luke his lightsaber in Jedi, enabling him to defeat Jabba. He brought Luke to Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine in Star Wars and saved Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewie from getting crushed on the first Death Star. He saved the escaping ship of queen Amadalla in Phantom Menace and saved Padme in Clones by turning off the lava. R2D2 did more for the cause than the Jedi.
I think that's why they couldn't foresee what would happen to Luke's friends: it was so random.
-If he never went, then it would have played out differently.
-If he showed up earlier, Vader wouldn't have had time to put Han in carbonite.
-If he was captured by Vader, then the tractor beam would have been activated before Artoo could fix the hyperdrive.
Nice to see this again. My first 17 viewings were of this version. The more familiar longer version did not have shots that were "added later." It's just that 70mm prints needed more time to be readied, and so that was underway at the lab while final tweaks were done for 35mm. The longer version was also in theaters on day 1.
You'll notice that this is the version that was scored. The added shots were nice, but of course repurposed music had to be placed in (from the scene where Luke can't raise the X-Wing). Also not seen here is the fact that the first two cuts of Lando and Chewie in the cockpit actually used a different take. There were other changes in the 70mm version as well, including some unfinished opticals. There were two screen wipes that aren't in the 35mm version because the color processing was off on them. And also in the scene of Luke in the liquid tank, the shot stays on him and does not cut to Han, Leia and Threepio observing.
I'm 12 yrs old again, watching this. Thank you.
This movie was and still is a masterpiece of science fiction. Still my favorite sci fi film of all time.
I remember this like it was the early 80's again, thank you for the reminder ; )

When my Dad was 10 years old in 1980, my Grandpa took him to the theater to see the original theatrical version of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. I love The Empire Strikes Back so much because it’s always my favorite Star Wars movie of the original trilogy. I also love both A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. My favorite character in Star Wars is Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi. Yoda is also my favorite character in Star Wars and so is Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, Uncle Owen, Aunt Beru, Wedge Antilles, Biggs Darklighter, Mon Mothma, Admiral Ackbar, Ewoks, Stormtroopers, Grand Moff Tarkin, Tusken Raiders, Jawas, Dr. Evazaan, Rebel Force Zev (Rogue 2), Dak, Force Ghost Ben Kenobi, Force Ghost Anakin Skywalker (Sebastian Shaw), Chewbacca, Han Solo, Boba Fett, Bossk, IG-88, Jabba the Hutt, The Emperor’s Royal Guards, Gonk Droid, Admiral Piett, Admiral Ozzel, General Veers, Hobbie, Snowtrooper, Cantina Band members, Cantina Aliens, TIE Fighter Pilot and Jon Dutch Vander.
you can see the fear on Pietts face.
Christopher Quinn no kidding, luckily for him he is one of the more Competent Officers in Vader's Disposal.
griz312 and/or the fact that Vader new there'd be a next time with Luke.
Definitely. But from another point of view,Piett was PISSED!
Admiral Piett was lucky that Vader didn‘t kill him for not getting the Millenium Falcon onto his ship via a tractor beam after Piett told Vader his men did de-activate the Falcon‘s hyperdrive, which R2-D2 fixed just in time,at the cost of falling onto Chewbacca, who was trying to fix it himself.
Vader's men did everything he told them to do to the letter so he didn't have any issue with them. Of course Piett is fearful, as well as the other officers but Vader realized there would be another day.
Loved hearing the audience cheer for the real hero of the movie: R2!!
An absolute masterpiece. I would love to see someone compare as many film reels, trailers and releases as possible to see all the extra scenes/ takes. And maybe make a supercut with the best from each version.
I've seen a few of those split-screen videos. Not sure why they bother with a "despecialized edition." They go back to Artoo being black in bluescreen; and probably where those Snow Speeder window frames are translucent. But this video goes to show that Lucas believes movies shouldn't have a fixed version, but can evolve with each release. Wonder what that means for the Smithsonian supposedly preserving copies of his films?
@@sandal_thong8631 I think I heard that the AFI refused to take Star Wars for preservation because Lucas refused to supply them with the original cut.
@@jedijones Yeah, Lucas is quite the hypocrite to testify before Congress in favor of film preservation saying he's afraid of Ted Turner's colorization, speeding up a film and cutting it for time slots on TV, changing it to use alternate takes, adding things years later or an owner destroying it on a whim (like those artist-protestors who buy a painting just to destroy it on camera) while not allowing his original releases to be preserved as-is.
This is quite a treat! Thanks for sharing, Adywan!
Vader's silent reaction when the Falcon escapes was largely the same as mine when it was communicated to me that a project I was working on for a year at work was cancelled.
If I had made Empire, or any movie for that matter, and people were applauding and cheering, I would be tremendously happy and proud.
The music in this scene always floors me.
This video is awfully high quality for having been taken in a movie theater in May of 1980.
the audio is recorded from the theater. the video is a of a scanned copy of the print i presume. even bootleggers of today could never get a movie quality this great lol
iamlarryjones jr. Despecialized edition is the thereatical release in its best form, that was made by dedicated fans wich have used many sourcematerials to peice togeter a blu ray quality version of the film. I do wish tho disney will include the original trilogy when the complete 9 part saga is out i guess
Wabbit Twacks The video you are seeing is the GOUT or "George's Original Unaltered Trilogy" or the 2006 Bonus DVD. It was based on the 1993 Faces Laserdisc version of the Star Wars Trilogy. It was non-anamorphic, suffered from aliasing and plagued with horrible features.
However the audio came from an audio recording of the 70mm print of The Empire Strikes Back.
These movies and all of Star Wars are pure 100% magic and modern fairy tales, becoming instant classics the moment they grace the big screen. My younger brothers love the prequel trilogy like I love the original trilogy, and little kids at my apartment complex love the sequel trilogy like I did the originals when I was a kid. It's so beautiful.

The booming engine sound after detaching of the Millennium Falcon gives me goose bums every time I watch this scene. Unmatched!

This shows what a stickler for geography Lucas was. We probably didn't need these extra shots but it's fine all the same. Part of what I didn't like about the space battles in The Force Awakens was how unconnected the pilots in the cockpits were to the exterior shots of the ships zipping about and shooting at each othet.

Vader senses and realizes that R2 fixed the hyper drive is great. That's why the new captain survived.
I felt a little insulted when Spider-Man referred to The Empire Strikes Back as "that old movie" in the Avengers movie but then I figured, well, in some years there's gonna be a new Spider-Man and this Avengers movie will be remembered just as a cool movie and it will get old; while our beloved EPISODE V will stand the test of time FOREVER, like the Pyramids, The White Album, The Black Album, etc. You know, there's a difference between EPIC and cool ;)
This is obviously one of the Early releases. It was released on 70mm a few weeks before its full Release. They had to go back and insert 3 shots or something. The Panning down to the Falcon, The ships passing and then the panning up to the rebel medical room. They did it in time for its wide 35mm release.
I remember this version when I saw it in 1980. Too bad Lucas lost his marbles.
Mike Cronis What do you mean by Lucas losing his marbles?
Agree Mike Cronis, Lucas is now clearly a few cans short of a six pack.
@Enigmas I.R.L, oh you're so clever! That was such a funny, original line!
lucas didn't direct this one
Interesting to see how the ending appeared in the 70mm theatrical version. Still think I prefer the 35mm version with the additional shots and dialogue though as I've been used to seeing it that way.
"Luke we're ready for takeoff"
"Good luck, Lando."
"When we find Jabba the Hutt and that bounty hunter, we'll contact you."
"I'll meet you at the rendezvous point on Tatooine."
It is tough to think of which is the best ending of any of the OT or the Disney Star Wars movies, they have all been stellar (even with the Ewoks dancing cheese factor of Jedi). Rogue One had a phenomenal sombre ending that is second only to Empire in that sense, I think. In terms of sheer emotional impact it is still Empire of course.
I like the sombre endings. ROTS was great, attack of the clones was decent (dooku linking up with Palpatine), Rogue One was great as well....but Empire. Empire truly tugs at your heart strings as being the best Star Wars Film. Alot of that is due to John Williams also
Best movie ever
i love how lando is whereing hans clothes
xHaVoCx xLaTCheRx Han's clothes might actually be Lando's old smuggling duds :)
Luke got a hand job.
Wait, the 70mm end never had the Falcon shot and those other ships at the end, that was added to the 35mm release.
Correct (a year later lol). That's actually the point of the person who posted this. This is a recreation. The film was literally released when George realize that it might be a little confusing for the audience as to where the Falcon was in relation to Luke and Leia. ILM got back together (small crew) and completed 2 new shots...sometimes utilizing previously shot X-wings. They added a bit of dialogue as well for the long shot that connected the 2 settings. So if you saw Empire a few weeks later at a 35mm theater, yes you saw a slightly different version:)

1:14 Why is Lando wearing Hans clothes??
+C.Funk99 I found an extensive answer here: answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100610034332AA7a81a
That's kinda weird because they talk about the "Corellian Blood Stripes" on the sides of Solos pants, but in The Empire Strikes Back the stripes are clearly not red at all. They are a mustard yellow color, so what do those stripes represent? Come on nerds, answer! Use the Force!
DamionChrist
goof
Goof, explain yourself?
DamionChrist
in empire his shirt is buttoned, while in return... wait, that's something different ain't it. about the stripes, adywan of sw revisited has said he won't edit the stripe colour cause the blood stripes part is extended universe. so I guess they retconned that after the release of empire
I remember being 14 when I seen it and thinking it has to go on but it left an invisible to be continued
I would be cheering along with them xD
Empire strikes back is the best movie easily
0:15 ... you did it!
Funny, when I heard people cheering when R2 fixed the hyper drive it made me wish I could go to more filmes where people expressed excitement and involvement in what they are seeing (not just reissued films whwere everyone has seen the film) People who force it, people who do it to much or do it when it isn't appropriate are not good. But I love the idea of everyone cheering on the characters as if it is actually happening. Just as in a comedy it's good witha crowd of people laughing along.
If only Kurtz produced Jedi...if only....
You can make the argument Lando's outfit wasn't necessarily from Han's closet. The black vest was standard issue for the Rebel Fleet Troopers. The shirt was standard surplus as well for a rag-tag Rebel Alliance.
I wish I could find one like this which would focus on the climax of Return of the Jedi
In Ritzler's "The Making of The Empire Strikes Back", he mentions that GL added 2 shots to the ending *after* the film was in theaters. I'm not seeing anything different, I wonder if there was an even earlier release prior to this one?
+AngelBlue01 Three... there were three shots added to the ending: After the initial shot of the X-Wing flying by, the first scene added was the shot of the X-Wings flying to the front as the medical frigate & the rebel transport fly into view. The second shot after that is the closeup up shot of the Falcon as the camera pans down to the cockpit, which then cuts to Lando saying "Luke, we're ready for takeoff." The third shot is a side shot of the Falcon that pans to the left to the interior window of the medical frigate as Lando says "When we find Jabba the Hutt and that bounty hunter, we'll contact you."
Aaron Morris 1: Which one? The one establishing shot at :48 or the ones at 2:28 and 2:35-2:36?
2: No and no on omitting either: The first shot establishes to the audience that our heroes are in the company of the Rebel Alliance group; The last shot leads us out of the movie and we see the Rebel ships move away to safer parts of space away from imperial eyes.
3: a ship flying across part of the screen is one thing: The CG creature walking across the entire screen blocking the view of the shot is something else. Besides, the shot was originally two astromech droids moving in front of the whole screen which was handled by second unit.
How much more do you have of this? I'd love to hear the audience reactions throughout the entire movie. Thanks for posting.
Amazing.
I liked the original version better than the special edition.
One of my favorite American movies
Hard to imagine I was only 9 years old when I saw this!! Devastated that Han was frozen and taken!
For this movie to outshine Star Wars was simply mind boggling!!!
Luke: I’ll meet you at the rendezvous point on… “Tahdooween”.
Compare this to the Last Jedi where they’re just having fun and celebrating despite having 99% of the resistance wiped out.
Wooahhh! I LIKE THIS!
I've always noticed Lando wearing the outfit. I never thought of it as him stealing or ripping off his look. I thought of it as the official outfit of the falcon. Whether it makes sense or not.
I thought that they were both from Correllia and that it's what guys from Correllia wore.
Why is Lando wearing hans clothes
There is a theory that Han was actually wearing clothes that Lando had left on the Falcon before losing it to Han in their wager. That being the case, Lando was actually just wearing his clothes that Han had been wearing all alone.
