Hello everyone! I wanted to update everyone on the status of the bed frame since I see concern for the ability to hold up in the comments 😉 I can assure you that the bed frame has held up for the past 2 years I have used it! In fact, I am honestly surprised it is still in such good condition. The thumbnail in the picture was actually taken just a few months ago because I wanted to update the thumbnail! If you're worried about the sturdiness if you build something like this yourself, there are a few ways to make it feel sturdier without compromising the storage space available. 1. Use a sheet of thicker plywood. 2. Add supports in the middle with 4x4s connected to the slats. 3. reinforce the crates themselves! I hope this clears up any questions you might have! Thanks again for the support!!!
@Kobe Robertson It's not sad. Women, in general, are underappreciated and are thought of not being able to do things for ourselves... You already know this.
I have watched a lot of DIY bed frame in videos. And I seem to like yours the best so far. And us women we rock! You go girl because that bed frame looks freaking awesome!
I have been looking for a bed and have thought about making it myself. You have just made me realize that I can do it myself. Thank you so much for showing me I can do this myself.
Great video especially this being your first. I would love to make this . I will have to save to get the crates. I like your demo and instructions. Very straight forward and easy to follow. Thanks for including tips along the way. Have a blessed day.
I L💜VE THIS!!!!! IT'S AWESOME!!!!! If you wanted your bed taller, you could put the box springs on under the mattress & use a fitted sheet to cover it! I, personally, need a taller bed being disabled. I think a headboard made to look like a picket fence would be an awesome addition! You could hang a garland across it!!!
@@amopotato7953 I'd love to be able to do that, but money, or I suppose I should say, lack of money, would keep my from doing it. I recently bought a car that I really can't afford, but REALLY needed a reliable one with heat and AC to get me through the rest of my years (hopefully.) Anyway, I have a fairly comfortable antique iron bed that was passed down from my great-grandparents, so I don't really NEED the crate bed. I just love it!!!! If I could get my antique bed painted a gunmetal black, I'd love that too!😉😊
I love that I came across this video. My boyfriend and I was looking for an idea to make a bed frame without it being too expensive and actually wanting it to be sturdy. We got all the materials and he put them all together the other day! We got an additional four crates for the middle since we are well around 200 pounds. We didn’t paint the crates but possibly will in the future. Joanns had crates for $10 which is not bad at all since we have 12 of them. Whenever you are on the bed you can’t hear any movement or anything. Home Depot wasn’t able to cut our wood. So in the future we will have to cut the excess wood off.
Wow! It looks like an expensive bed frame! It’s almost a small catamaran. It’s F - ing stunning! I’m not kidding. I’ve been dreaming about something like this. I have a photo of a posh bed in London uk I slept in and have been determined to find something close in beauty and function. It had a sort of wrap around headboard and shelves. I live the way you spaced your apart like a catamaran. It adds the elegance mist bed frames lack because it seems they’re constructed in a way that looks messy or overcrowded. I love you!
Yes! That's one thing I really love about this bed. I have 3 or 4 rolling totes under the middle with my seasonal clothes too. I'm actually having trouble deciding what to put in the side compartments, theres just so much storage!
Very cool, o was looking to get a bed frame, but this is even better! I have used milk crates as shelving in my bathroom already, and this will give me extra storage, how perfect.
@@sixpackbinky she updated recently in the description that its held up and hasn't bent. But I would've added more crates in the middle because no way that's gonna last me long😂. But she left the middle open to store things she doesn't use, so whatever works for her
This is so practical. I enjoyed watching the video and I will make one for myself, b'cause I love creating things that I can use. Thank you so much for sharing.
Love the idea. Seems like you would need more support in the middle, though. I would probably use 4 more crates turned upside down, down the center with the last one facing out for more storage.
Nice. I would use a subfloor support instead of plywood slats. Subflooring is very durable and weight bearing. Also consider a middle support. Very nice.
I hope not; my deformed spine would never take the pressure of a mattress lying on a wood platform--I know, because Dad built all our beds for us when we were little squirts, and we discovered that I had to have the flexible support of a foundation, not something that doesn't flex at all. Now, at 67 years old, I'd be crippled if I had to sleep on something inflexible.
From a professional woodworker a few words of advice: Crates are usually made of soft wood that will naturally shift with temperature and humidity changes. Over time these pieces WILL bow, split and crack, especially when subjected to any type of weight as in this use. You should always create a center support in this situation, in particular where excess weight of a body or bodies are going to rest. Also be aware that every type of wood work has appropriate screws. Screws used for decks are for heavier, thicker chemically treated wood which has to withstand tremendous weight and weather. Thus, using these heavier screws can easily split the softer crate wood (usually white pine that’s of ‘cast-off’ quality). With this construction you’ll begin to see that the middle section of the “support” boards will sag or bow, particularly if they aren’t of a sturdier type wood. Then one day she’ll turn over in bed and hear cracking. Be warned.
This bed frame lasted me 2 years, and I got rid of it because it no longer fit my decor. So it was still sturdy no bowing. The trick is to use quality wood and crates!
Curiosity question: It's been several months, how is it holding up? I'm concerned about the the middle buckling. Suggestion: add crisscross boards beneath or 1x4 or 1x6 board at the headboard/footboard ends to connect the (2) crates from the side and on the bottom.
The middle is doing fine. No warping. I used a very sturdy wood, I think I used beech wood. I left the room in the middle on purpose, so I would have a ton of storage space.
Hello! I recently got married and someone bought us a bed/bedframe as a wedding present so we did decide to retire the frame I made. The biggest reason being it does get kind of dusty. It was however still extremely sturdy with no bowing! As long as you choose sturdy woods, mainly hardwoods NEVER composite! Then something like this would last a really long time! The only thing I would do differently is instead of just painting, I would also seal it with something!
Thank you .this is exactly what I was looking for .something that is compact and simple .One week ago a car drove into my apartment living room . The city said it was uninhabitable and told me to evacuate that same day. The manager moved me to an upstairs apartment temporarily while the insurance company repairs my apartment . it was a nightmare carrying bed frames , mattresses and other furniture upstairs. from now and I want to have furniture that I can dismantle and carry upstairs or downstairs easily. Thank you🙂
Question: By the way I love this idea.... just wondering if you stub your toes on the crates? This would be my fear since the crates come all the way to the edge of the mattress. Thinking I would need to recess them about 6 inches.
I’d put more support in the middle because over time that will start to sag since it is a soft material (compared to metal). That’s why most wooden bed frames have extra support underneath.
l love what you did its pretty and seriously you could do a lot of different things with that, like a cupboard, outdoor seating, half of it would make a lounge or coffee table its brillient thanks so much for the share.
Consider doubling up the boards and having a middle crate to hold the weight (i mean in general, not trying to be rude). Over time slouching my occur. OTHERWISE, fantastic idea, be sure to let the originator know of your posting their idea out of respect.
