- In this video, I'll show the basics of how I made a simple beat using a Tascam Portastudio 414. The whole experience of working with it is incredibly fun, and I can see why the OP-1 recreated a 4-Track recorder for its recording interface. I hope you enjoy this video! Thank you so much for watching!
Great upload. You cannot beat oldschool cassette tech. Its warmer and fatter sounding. Tape had a little more noise yes. But it sounds better. And it's that hands on tactile thing. Its fun making your own master tapes and labelling them. I used digital recorders for 15 years. And lost alot of hard work. When the hard drive crashed or the machine broke down or I just plain forgot to save it.. With tape it's real. I have been back to tape for 3 years now and will stay with it for life.
PArt of the modern problem is things are too loud. Everything is "mastered" in a way that just ruins music. Going back and listening to, lets say nas it was written, it sounds so good and warm. Dirty, yet clear. Compare that to new albums and the new stuff is SO much louder, its offensive at this point. I go out of my way to not make things too loud.
Thank you for a good vibe :-)
Very cool! I’ve been making mixtapes for over 20 years and started out using a Tascam 4 track, then moved up to a Roland digital 8 track, then cool edit pro for years. The past 5 years, I’ve just been using mp3s and Ableton. I just purchased and old analog mixer and a Yamaha MT120. I can’t wait to use it!
Thanks, and that's awesome! The MT120 looks sick. Have fun!
Thats was so cool! Thanks for the upload!
Hi Josh, nice video, and I love the cat. I use a Tascam 488MK1 8 track cassette recorder, and it's great. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards. Paul
Such a fun beat!! And the cat footage really adds to the presentation.
Hey! I am a blind 13 year old who wants a portable groove box. Which one would you recommand?
Great beat. And great technique!
This is dope
nice!!!
Nice video dude might have to get one!
It's really fun! Stripping away the modern niceties of a full DAW can help the music-making feel more focused. And thank you!
Josh Is Making Music I totally agree original creations like yours are something to be proud of.
Do you pan the tracks at all during the recording bit?
I didn't, which is a good case of me not utilizing every part of my gear, haha.
does the grey tascam sound different then the blue one?
I don't know for sure, the blue one is a later model so it may sound cleaner, but I don't have two to compare, sorry.
Did I miss the part where you hit rewind?
Are you using the same mic for all instruments?
I had everything running directly into the 4-track, so no microphones involved.
How do you take your recording from the tape in the recorder and send it to a master tape that you can play in a normal machine
Should have a line out
If anybody is interested, I have a Fostex X-15, a Fostex 160 Multitracker (cassette) portastudio and a Yamaha RX17 drum machine. They all still work.
That's definitely interesting! Are they for sale?
@@JoshIsMakingMusic I'll give them to you. All I ask is the shipping money.
@@johnb9507 Oh wow! That's super generous of you! I've got an email in the "about" section of my RUclips Channel, if you're alright with emailing me there, we can set it up. Thank you so much!
@@JoshIsMakingMusic OK. It;s late here. I'll get back with you soon.
@@johnb9507 No rush. This is a really generous offer that I really appreciate. Thank you again!
😻😻
Drum track too dull put some high eq on it 👍👍
how do you sync up all the tracks together?
I recorded the tracks live, so it just came down to timing and making sure I played on beat (took a couple of tries!).
I agree.......
If there's anyone who can send me Portastudio or any gadget like this, please do so. I'm in India and don't have this in my country. And can't afford to import it. This is my dream!
