if anyone thinks these drills are easy then go try them. I did and soon realized it would take hours of practice to master them. Then again, most of us are not The Pistol.
@@hopegaming867 I like to believe this is true, but the debate about whether we all have the same potential, or whether hard work only takes you so far, is still going on to this day.
Best scorer, best passer, best ball handler to ever play the game. He is the original basketball showman. The guys in the NBA today can't do what he did at LSU all those years ago.
@chazbukowski I don't suppose there is any point commenting to you since you never saw Pete play. But there is a video of the 1973 NBA All-Star game where you can see Pete's passing skills. To call Pete a "chucker" is a sin. Anyway "chuckers" don't make it to the NBA. All you do is reveal your utter ignorance.
I use to like watching Roundball during half time of the NBA games of the 1970's, it may have run into the 80's. It was always quite informative and Red always had the top players on the show.
If Pete had played with the Celts he would have been an even bigger part and a more winning part of history. And Celts would have been even more entertaining.
Mick A you are 100% right, Boston is my favorite franchise and and Pistol is my 2nd favorite player ever, he would had been a perfect fit, if only he played one more year he would had won that Ring with the Celtics
I know. He felt unappreciated by Fitch. From what I've read, I don't blame him. I also read that Red said he would have played Pete more, but he didn't interfere with the coaches decisions. I commend Red for that, regardless of my opinion.
The legends back then would torch current nba legends.. truth is there’s so much distraction today, these guys just show up and play. Back then, all these guys did was play
Pete Maravich is the most skilled basketball player that I've ever seen. - Dr J deadspin.com/this-doctor-can-operate-dr-j-pistol-pete-and-the-1469135960
RIP the greatest basketball coach ever in the history of the universe we were blessed to have him on this planet of ours for real and pistol maravich the most creative mind to ever play basket ball we lost him way to early but he was the absolute best college basket ball player that ever played, even though he won not a championship, no one will ever be the player he was there was only 1 pistol maravich. I know he had a son but Pete was the greatest.
These were the same drills all us budding young players were drilled constantly on in the 70s - probably because our coaches were imitating Pete. Of course Maravich does them on a whole different level.
BRO. I have seen SO MANY dribbling drills from NBA Basketball 🏀 Players today I thought I was gonna see Pistol do the same ones. Then I woulda been like: “Okay! The new school cats are just copying what Pete did.” But these drills Pete is doing I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE EVER! Genius too! I never thought about them like Pete is describing. AMAZING BALL HANDLER! THAT BALL 🏀 WHEN IT IS IN PISTOL PETES HANDS BECOMES ONE WITH HIS BODY!
pete never learned to carry the ball, of course you adapt to your era. pistol was way ahead of his time. he would have shot threes and would have truly benefited from free agency. by the way he would have loved kyrie and curry. i was there as a ballboy in his most productive seasons and i saw the amazing things he could do.
Ya know a lot of young players today and even HS coaches would look at these drills and think they were of no value. That is really sad....when you are being shown and taught something by these 2 legends take advantage and learn from it.
Pete got his stuff from Earl the Pearl when he was at WSSU. Pete was in HS in Raleigh. When Earl came to Raleigh to play Shaw University, Pete was there watching. and taking note.
Even a player with limited abilities can benefit from Pete's drills. Alas, not many kids have the diligence to do so. You can buy the whole set of drills on DVD.
I actually look at these drills as kind of silly. At least they are silly for most people. Years ago a friend of mine said that if there were a trophy for the best "warm-up player", I'd win. I could drive to the basket, bounce the ball off my head and make the basket about 75% of the time. I could pass the ball with a fair degree of accuracy when dribbling down court, swing the ball behind my back with my left hand, and hit the ball with my right elbow behind my back. Try that sometime. To be forthright, I stole most of the antics from the Harlem Globe Trotters. Anyway, I was not a particularly good player because I lacked athleticism. Everything I did took skill but only limited athleticism. But I looked great warming up.
Unfortuantly I think the reason why he is underrated is because his basketball career was cut horribly short, and gave in to alcohol. Its truly sad for one of the most talented basketballers to go out in such fashion.
@chazbukowski moron. An unabashed chucker could not be considered one of the games great passers. All of his peers have the utmost respect for him including Dr. J who calls him the most talented basketball he's ever seen. But i guess you know more than them 😏
This is where all of your big stars got their moves like Stephen Curry Julius Erving so forth and so on they all say they copied their moves from Pete Maravich
Pete lived to play basketball, and would spend the final moments of his life, playing the game he loved . . . What a phenomenal and innovative player he was!
Come on..stop it...lol...dont get me wrong Pete was an amazing player as anyone will tell you with some basketball knowledge...but to make that ridiculous statement is just lol funny...
James Vickers the comment isn’t that far off. The NBA Finals at this time weren’t even shown live. The league was filled with coke heads a college greats that once they got that 1st check turned into fools.
this was 77', Pete was starting to take over as he ave. 31 points and won the scoring ave. per game that year. And then the Knee Injury ended his dominance
Quick note: Maravich only played one season with the 3-point line in effect. If it were in effect a few years earlier, Maravich could’ve prolonged his career and would’ve been considered one of the greatest shooters ever.
If only Pete had come into the league with the Celtics, Lakers, Knicks (Instead of the Hawks and then the Jazz) or one of those teams, who know what he might have accomplished? Don't forget that Maravich had to do all his ballhandling magic while keeping his hand on the top half of the ball. No palming, no carrying.
He came into the league when basketball was still being played with traditional methods. He didn't quite fit with the Atlanta Hawks team with his style. They traded him to the expansion New Orleans Jazz who were looking for players with exciting and new style of play. The rest is history this guy was one of the best ever to play.
Red loves Pete Maravich you know that he knows in the seventies he was the premier player in the league and didn't get the respect he deserves because of jealousy Pete Maravich was a top 10 Talent all time in red nose it and it's great to see them together
A genius pioneer, I call him the greatest ball handler ever because he broke more ground than anyone on that front, and changed the game more than anyone on that front. Kyrie is great, but remember that he is standing on the shoulders of giants, and has modern strategy/science on his side. Pete is a both a foundational element and a pillar of the game. And yes I will repeat, imagine his numbers with a 3 point line.
I learned how to do this at basketball camp forever ago. The trick is to bounce the ball even with your heels, or farther back. Never racked myself, not even once. 👍
TNT had to pick top best 60 players of all time. The judges were (Charles, Kenny the Jet Smith, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Kevin McHale (he chose Celtic players only), and Stephen Kerr, and none of them chose the pitol. Even Ernie Johnon (who hosted) called them out on it at the end.
They were not picking top 60. they were drafting teams, and it was for fun. Kenny even picked himself... he said some stupid things over the years but i don't think he thinks that he is top 60 player.
He averaged 44 points per game w/o a 3 point line--For a kid to do that today he'd have to hit (by example) 15 3 pointers a night every night he played...Simply will never be done again.
