AS an owner of 3 of the Harbor Frieght "Winsor Design" tool chests I can assure you have virtually the same chest Minus the Diamond shaped mirror in the lid. There are many utube reviews and a few upgrade hacks. Such as mounting rubber feet on the bottom steel corner protectors using the existing third screw at each bottom corner. Candle wax application will make the drawers slide smoother and painting the underside of the drawers with shellac will stabilize the mdf drawer bottoms. any cosmetic damage can be easily fixed with light sanding and 1 or two thin coats of clear shellac. I also own a Gerstner Interntional box that is slightly nicer but costs 5X more. The "gold standard" are the USA OHIO made chests which reach into the thousnds of dollars new and bting a very high price used if in good condition. I got smile out of your British Pound being real money comment. I think I would opt for an actual pound 16oz of sterling silver than a modern pount note.
I am on the other side of the pond and bought the Harbor Freight version. It is very similar to yours. I paid around $85 US for.the box. Thanks for the video. Your box is very nice.
Hi Loz, I don't know what it is with boxes but I love 'em. That box you have there is a corker, who wouldn't want one, even if it was just to sit and look at it. Thanks for the vid, regards, Fred
Oh how I wish you hadn't shown that! I am a sucker for wooden boxes :-) I'll put it on my Christmas list, it looks really nice and I might have to buy new stuff to put in it. Thanks for sharing.
hi Stu, yup, it’s certainly a useful “treasure box” for man-stuff……. Mine is still full,of assorted measuring stuff, but recently pocket knives have stated worming their way into the little drawers- even a little red victorinox crikey!🤣👍
@@GrumpaLoz thanks Mr Grumpa, yes all is well, just extremely busy with house renovations and life. Thanks for asking young man. I'd love to have been as busy as you have of late(in the workshop), but slowly getting there
Exactly this box stands next to my small lathe. It does not have the same wood quality or fit as an American box. But it only costs 1/10 of the price. I caught a special offer at the time and the box cost about 90 Pounds, shipping costs extra. The box is always worth this price. If I still had space, I would buy another one.
@@SussexEDC I've got a plan to make some kind of display cabinet with a glass door in the future when my workshop is put together properly (and find some spare time) Unless I find one of these chests really cheap at the carboot.... 🛠👍😊
very nice, thanks for sharing. I've been thinking too much about these recently, Boy are they expensive, unless you buy second-hand then they are astronomical! It looks like chronos also make some like yours but with brass coloured fittings (out of stock). I keep swinging between buying or building, I think building will cost a lot more but might be a great project...
Very true! I dithered a lot before parting with the cash.... second hand they're still expensive AND they tend to be really battered and need a lot of fixing up, and so far its too "drawer intensive" for my skill level! hence my cheapo option!
I like it. I'm a little miffed its so expensive in the UK compared to the US though.... the bottom drawers are deep enough for my pocket knife collection- check for your wood carving tools if they have thick handles. as I said in the review the finish feels like old fashioned shiny but brittle lacquer..... a few chips so far but the box is holding up!
Completely agree, whether for my watchmaking tools or EDC, they look so much better stored in something like this. My mechanic mate loves Snap on. But for me, this is looking like a good option.
Here in the north of England ( Pennines) we have a lot of cold and damp months. My garage has single brick walls that are subject to damp ( driving rain) and condensation. I have lined the walls but still suffer from high humidity most months. Tools in toolboxes and my cast iron tops to the bandsaw and table saw do get surface rust oct to may, so I have to cover the surfaces with plywood covers lined with felt soaked in mineral oil. I’ve put the rust inhibiting paper in the bottom of the toolboxes.I also run a dehumidifier 24/7. So far the precautions seem to have worked….
Worth every penny, it's a beautiful thing. I'm guessing solid wood judging by the end grain on the side joint next to the clasp (cheap US version won't be solid). Thanks for the measurements, that just gone into my list of 'must build' one stuff.
I’ve fancied one of these for a few years, I wanted to use it for my “edc” 😂 too. Maybe drill a hole somewhere and add a wireless charging pad for my devices.
Nice video. I have the Harbor Frieght version. The mirror in ours is handy if you have to pull out your pistol and shoot someone by sighting over your shoulder. Two things that bother me about mine are: The fit of the drawers and the drawers falling out if you open them too enthuastically. I plan to correct both of thse errors and I'll make a boring YT vid about the process when I get to it.
Nice chest. As I’ve previously said the more I look at you videos I can feel the cogs in my brain trying to justify the £107-£120 expenditure. I like the idea of you building a stand for it. How deep is the compartment at the top?
This looks just like that cheap Chinesium box they sell at Harbor Freight Tools in the US for $75. If it is, it's made out of cheap veneer over even cheaper particle board. I don't know what these cost in the UK but they are overpriced in the US at 75 Murican.
Yeh, I think the Uk version is actually real I but thin) wood- heavily lacquered. I haven’t had the courage to excavate to test it- but at twice the price of the Harbour freight box it had better be wood! 🤣
Just what I needed to see before I buy.
I'm here doing my research too!! I'm seriously considering one.
Did you get one in the end?
