    Sam has the right to be angry at Dean, and Dean shouldn't have done what he did. But I guess many people are forgetting that Dean is broken. His whole life revolves around Sam. His father made sure of that "...most importantly, watch out for Sammy" Without Sam, Dean wouldn't know what to do. It's like a huge chunk of himself has been taken out. We saw it when he was with Lisa and Ben. Dean isn't the same without Sam. He also said this to Sam "Watching out for you, it's kind of who I am. That's my job." (Paraphrasing) Sam is his anchor, his purpose. He'd literally throw everything away just to make sure Sam is okay, whether Sam approves or not. So should Dean apologize for keeping Sam alive by getting him possess? No, because in his POV that's what he should be doing. Is he wrong? Maybe, but if he didn't do it then we wouldn't be watching season 14 😋😆😉😊

    • @7SonsofFeanor
      @7SonsofFeanor 5 лет назад +47

      I think you've summed it up perfectly - from Dean's point of view, there's nothing to apologize for and he'd do it again, because it was the right thing to do. He knows Sam's mad, but....
      But from Sam's viewpoint... possession, loss of bodily autonomy, not knowing what's real or what isn't....Sam has a long history of that all being taken from him, and now his 'stone number one' who he was supposed to be able to rely on to keep that all at bay has tricked him into accepting possession. That's...that's a really heavy betrayal.
      Dean not telling Sam about Gadreel (until it was too late) is a betrayal on the same level as Sam not telling Dean about drinking demon blood. Sam had a lot of reasons why he was doing that, too....didn't make Sam right. Dean had his reasons for talking Sam out of shutting the gates of hell - but that doesn't make Dean right, either.

    • @nina-raedelong158

      When the writers brought up the fact that Sam and Dean's relationship is codependent, the show proved that to be accurate. I think Sam's codependency on Dean ended in season 4 when Sam chose Ruby. Season 9 has plenty of examples indicating that Dean is a codependent caretaker: being Sam's savior, being unable to have a happy life without Sam, making decisions for Sam without letting him have a say, treating Sam like a child instead of a grown adult, being unable to accept Sam even if that's his choice, and believing Sam is his responsibility when Sam is a grown man who is responsible for himself.
      I think when the Mark of Cain comes into play and Dean needs to be saved, I feel like Sam will learn to appreciate Dean more.

    • @songstress42
      @songstress42 4 года назад +14

      I 100% agree with that. Dean is Sam’s brother but he’s also his parent. He’s been Sam’s parent since Mary died and it’s just instinct at this point. It was so ingrained in him by John to look after Sam that Dean doesn’t know any other way to be so he’ll do literally anything to keep Sam alive. Which we’ve seen play out more than once on this show.
      The problem is that Sam doesn’t see Dean as his parent, just his overprotective older brother and since Dean isn’t able to articulate the fact that he is acting as Sam’s parent at all times, they are constantly misunderstanding their own dynamic.

    • @thruthemotions
      @thruthemotions 4 года назад +8

      True. Dean is like a mom to Sam. And father. He'd rather die for Sam than the other way around. Parents hate for their child to die before them and Dean is the same way. Sam is his world. With Sam dead he feels like he failed as an older brother cause its been his job (order, given by their dad) to keep Sam safe and he will do that until his very last breath. He literally feels as if he has no purpose without Sam like you sad whereas Sam would go live with a lovely lady and have a bunch of kids on a farm somewhere after Dean dies.

    • @nina-raedelong158
      @nina-raedelong158 4 года назад +9

      @@thruthemotions Even if it wasn't an order, Dean would still protect Sam of his own free will. Season 8 showed that Sam would be okay if Dean died, but he wouldn't be the same. However, Sam was a mess in the season 9 finale and in the season 10 premiere when Dean died then he was gone. "Prophet and Loss" showed Sam's grief with the thought of losing his brother. He had to hit and yell at him and start crying to convince Dean not to go into the box. I think having Jack around helped Sam to understand Dean's perspective. Now that Sam understands what a home and family feels like.

It goes to show you that "the more things change the more they stay the same".

    Instead of trying to defend himself and blaming himself, Dean should have just apologized to Sam. I don't think Dean ever properly apologized to Sam. Dean's whole "I didn't want you dead" and "But I saved your life" words don't really suffice this time. Sam deserved an apology. That's why Sam said "don't think that's the problem because it's not"....it's not about Dean being poison at all...Sam definitely doesn't see Dean that way...it's the fact that Dean saved Sam's life without his permission and tricked him, and instead of apologizing, Dean tried to justify and defend what he did.

      Dean is not justifying or defending his action. If anything, he is doing the opposite. Yes, he could have apologised, but he himself felt that this was a line that he couldn't un-cross with a simple sorry. Btw he does apologise in the finale episode.

    • @ankitg7994
      @ankitg7994 6 лет назад +21

      @Todd Donerson He did apologise in the Finale. Also, exactly how many times did he "cross the line"? I can only see tricking Sam to be in that category. Also, if S09 ruined Dean for you, did S10 ruin Sam for you? As far as I can see, he did a lot of shadier stuff than Dean, for pretty much the same reason. Also, as far as Dean getting worse goes, what did you expect? After facing all that he has faced, do you expect him to become S01 Dean again? It is a wonder he stays as positive he does, considering the amount and quality of trauma he has faced. Such things tend to change a person.

Then there's also the fact that the last time he was possessed by an angel it was Lucifer, and that ended in him going to Hell, coming back soulless and the whole Hallucifer thing, Dean knows that Sam would never want to be possessed by an angel after Lucifer, but he did it anyway.

Because if you don't even know what you did wrong, it makes the person you wronged more annoyed because it shows how arrogant and ignorant you are. Also how you seem to think that you were in the right, when you weren't.
    On a slightly happier note, at the beginning, Cas just looks between them and turns and walks away. He's just kinda like "Nope, not getting involved in this. Winchester fights never end well..." Hahahahahaha

      "With a sober mind and sound memory". It's not wonder they say. Dean was the only one who had a clear mind in this situation. Sam was burned alive by the trials, but his goal was to close the gates of hell even at the cost of his life. Blame is on Dean because Sam was half-alive from trials and loss of blood.

    • @catejoshua6017
      @catejoshua6017 8 лет назад +9

      +Екатерина Роднина I get what you say, but that doesn't change the fact that they live for each other. In 10x23 Dean had his mind not a least clear at all, but Sam, as you say "clear mind", changed his Deans decision. So, the blame there is on Sam. But Sam would do it again, as he said, without to even hesitate.
      Before Sam started with the trials, he made clear that he wants to live. And in 8x23, when death tried to manipulate him to get him willing to die, Dean represented Sam's WILL to live. And yeah, Sam wasn't clear at his mind that time, but remember when he said to Dean in 10x23, that he was pulled out by Dean. He didn't want to die there actually, and thats what Sam took as parallel to Dean in 10x23: that he was not thinking straight.
      And, they both don't have a clear mind when it comes to the life of the other one. As Sam said, they made heart-choices. And there's nothing to wrong or blame on that.

    • @ЕкатеринаРоднина
      @ЕкатеринаРоднина 8 лет назад +1

      "Before Sam started with the trials, he made clear that he wants to live. " Sam always said it, always. But that didn't stop Sam from jump into the Lucifer's cage. This is nothing more than an excuse. Sam and Dean were agreed both that to close hell is important. And do not confuse the situation. In 10X23 Sam didn't dissuaded Dean for the most part, but inspired him with the idea that Dean is not evil. Sam agreed with Dean's plan and was ready to die in 10X23. You do not understand the situation.

    • @catejoshua6017
      @catejoshua6017 8 лет назад +3

      +Екатерина Роднина You really don't get it right? The choices they made, Dean with the trials and Sam with the darkness, where heart-choices. When Sam says Dean's not evil for choosing him over closing the gates of hell, means he understands Dean and why he did it. Sam unleashed a force upen the world, that almost destroyed the whole universum and god, but as we know him, he'd do it again (11x01, 11x09).
      My first comment about this clip wasn't blaming Sam. I just said, that he also did a choice, where he choose his brother over the world. But you come and blame Dean, although there's no one to blame here. It's not mistakea or bad choices they made, bc they would make them again.

    • @ЕкатеринаРоднина
      @ЕкатеринаРоднина 8 лет назад +1

      Our conversation under the clip is on the specific situation. Whatever you say, blame is on Dean here. Doesn't matter what have been guided by Sam, when Dean dissuaded him. Sam was in the Church and clearly felt like dying, but he continued FINISH the ritual. And, by the way, about the choice made. Dean chose the mark of Cain, and thus forced Sam to make a choice on. I do not enjoy blaming Dean, as you seem to think. But I don't like to justify unpleasant actions of Dean that Sam would have done the same as well or great brother's love. When Sam tried to convince Dean that he's not evil, it was not only about closing the gates of hell, but all the things Dean did. You're overacting to all of the statements that Sam made a choice to survive after the trials because of Dean, but all is not so simple. As I said, Sam was not in clear mind. In this state, Sam most likely was led by the instinct of self-preservation. I doubt that Sam could think about great things like love for a brother. And I'm not so sure that if he were in a normal state, then his choice would change the love for the brother. Because Sam love life obviously but he prefer to finish trial. He prefer Lucifer's cage instead of normal life. And release of the Darkness is a very controversial issue, because Dean killed death before spell worked. This is cut it off all the way, even if Sam's spell didn't work. Of course, the issue of Darkness to blame both brothers, but this situation was created by the Dean due to the unreasonable choice. Who can blame Sam for saving brother, which he ownes so much?

  • @AndreaCanales25

    I completely get Sam's pain and feel of betrayal, but I just can't help to side with Dean. I really get his reasons, and a lot of you don't, which is just sad tbh. If Sam was willing to die, was because his state of mind, at that moment, was just in a huge hole of depression. He felt worthless, he couldn't forgive himself for letting Dean down so many times: he was suicidal. And I really think no one would ever let any suicidal loved one commit suicide because that would be just wrong. Instead, you would help them. Let them see they are, in fact, worthy and deserve to have a life. And that's exactly what Dean did. He looked for a way to save his brother from committing suicide. If he would've told Sam the truth about the possessing thing, he knew he would've said no, but not just because he was going to be possessed, but more for the fact that he just didn't want to keep living. And Dean knew that. That it didn't really matter the method, Sam would've still said no. That's why he decided to trick him and save him. He saved him from his own mind. Yes, he should've told him the truth later on, but he knew how Sam would feel and he didn't really even know how to tell him. Besides, he tried to tell him before, but Gadreel kept on threating and convincing him not to. So I think the actual big problem here is just Dean's lack of explanation. If he would've explain himself, his reasons and his thoughts, plus apologizing with Sam for not telling him the truth before, I think the story would've been different. But c'mon! We know how Dean is. He doesn't talk, not about everything. It's just not in him to do it. So yeah, my heart just broke for him. He looked so hopeless. He did what he had to. Maybe not in a way Sam would've wanted to, but his intentions were solid. Plus, you guys have to remember how broken Dean is. You seem to forget that easily. John literally raised him with the only goal of always look out for Sam. That is his job, the only one he has, the only one he knows how to do, so he would always look for a way to help him and do what he thinks is the best for him. Yes, it may be seen as an obssession, that he is too dependent on Sam, but that's how he was raised. It's not his fault. Sam is a grown man, but for Dean, he would always be his little brother. Don't get me wrong, tho. He knows Sam is strong and capable of leading and taking difficult choices, but in situations like this, Sam would always be his priority and would always go back to be his little brother, the one he must protect. Seriously, sometimes it feels like you guys hate on Dean and that makes me feel like he is certainly the most incomprehend character of the series. Not a lot of you really get Dean, and is really sad. Because if you do, you will realize of how a good human being he is. As Cas said "he is the most caring, selfless and loving person ever". There is just not other human being on earth who loves, cares and protects the ones he loves like Dean does. No one. And that's why he is simply the best man in the world, as same as the best and most complicated and broken character of the series. And I truly love him for that.

    I honestly don't know how Sam does it, Having dean for a brother. I get that he didn't want Sam to die back in the trials, but at the same time, he should learn to respect sam's decisions. If he wanted to finish it regardless of the cost, then that should be the end of it. But "that's not in him" is it? And really this is where everything started to go to crap for them. It was after this that dean makes the genius decision to take on the mark and not know what it does to him, only what it can do, and then has the fantastic idea to fight metatron. By himself. Don't get me wrong I like dean, he can be a dick at times but he has his moments. It's really annoying how people see dean in a bad way , I'm not saying dean is always right but this situation ? sam said before doing the trials he expect a win win situation like ( both are alive! ) a light end of the tunnel type of a situation , but not dean ! ( He saw it as a dead end situation and wanted to do it by himself) sam asked dean to trust him this time (sam wanted to fix things as a payback due to the things he had done before , eg; the apocalypse ) so dean did support sam. That time before ending the ritual dean convinced sam that sam is not guilty so sam wanted to live and decided to stay , he agreed to stay with dean! but after he went to coma he decided by his own in his dream to choose death even though it's not his time , he said to dean that what dean has done was selfish by saving sam, he did that because he doesn't want to be alone ,okay let's say yes then and what about sam? his decision was selfish too , he gave false hopes about a win win situation even though dean never see it that way and sam failed , even in the second trial remember what happened? they have to save an innocent soul from hell and send to heaven that time sam was stuck in purgatory with bobby if dean couldn't save sam without benny's help how are they going to complete the trials and have a win win situation according to sam? He failed to do it alone somehow without help. he couldn't save himself if dean was not there for him. Sam's always willing to sacrifice himself without a proper plan because of the guilt he feel inside , even castiel realized it while sam wanted to torture himself by castiel. Sam has this feeling to sacrifice himself to make things right. and My point is most of the time when sam asked dean to trust him with his doings he couldn't succeed . He trusted ruby , killed Lilith & etc. Even he couldn't succeed in these trials and have a win win situation as he mentioned to dean. What happened to sam is not good but all that happened to him was because of his false hope of a win win situation to a lie that made by metatron, and it's not sam's or dean's fault, and then Sam failed and he chose death. Isn't that selfish ? After saying dean that he'll stay with dean? (Dean's happiness = sam being alive , Sam's happiness = rest in peace ) REST IN PEACE AFTER GIVING FALSE HOPES ABOUT A WIN WIN SITUATION TO DEAN AND FAILED ? If things are going to be like this why sam asked dean to trust him in the first place? he should have listened to dean and let him do the trials because dean knew one of them is going to die , and dean doesn't want sam to be dead because he knew sam's mind sam wanted to live a normal life (sam is not obsessive like dean if he can make a decision to move on with life he can do it) that's why he stopped searching for dean when he went to purgatory. In this situation Sam couldn't win as he expected then he failed then he broke the promise to stay with dean , dean was hopeless and emotional he doesn't have any choice and it's normal to act that way. Sam leave that choice to dean.
    In this situation they had no agreement ( when sam went to lucifer's cage dean kept his promise not to bring back sam from hell even though he wanted to because they had an agreement. ) , if sam doesn't break his promise to stay with dean then dean will not feel this much of guilt because of what he did to sam and all that happened. Even though sam doesn't want to be alive gadreel saved both castiel and sam even though he killed kevin :/
    I love both sam and dean but this time sam was rudely hurt dean's feelings and I feel an ache in my heart for dean :/

    • @DisasterPiece73
      @DisasterPiece73 9 лет назад +14

      iloveinu2death I don't think the issue was with Dean saving Sam's life without his permission so much as it was about the way Dean went about saving his life. Sam had been possessed twice before Dean helped Gadreel trick him into giving his consent and he knew that Sam would rather die than choose to be possessed again. When he was possessed by Meg she killed that hunter guy Steve Wandell and when he was possessed by Lucifer he killed Bobby and Castiel and Sam remembered all of it. And that's not even getting into the stuff he did when he was missing his soul. Sam has a really long and complicated history of not being in control of his own body and mind, so of course he would object to being possessed again and Dean knew that. The fact that Gadreel then betrayed Dean's trust by siding with Metatron and then went on a killing spree while in Sam's body (with one of the victims being Kevin, who was practically a family member to him) just made it all worse. I do agree with you that things between Sam and Dean would have been a lot better if Dean had just apologized to Sam and promised to try and make it up to him instead of taking off on his own, though. It's now a full season later and I still don't think he's apologized to him yet, although Sam seems to have forgiven him now.

      He did apologise in the Finale ( just before confronting Metatron, he was about to say it, Sam stopped him, saying "I know." ) And when it came to Dean, Sam went and did very shady things himself, some of which led to Charlie's death. Did you watch season 10 ? Coz sam did the same thing to save dean , in S9 because of saving sam they lost Kevin & in s10 in the process of saving dean they lost charlie ( saving dean from mark of cain) and in the process of saving demon dean sam had to sell a man's soul to summon crowley to get back dean. Sam's pure intention was to save dean but accidentally that guy's soul was sold because of sam and he died with dean's hands (situations reversed) sam killed kevin accidentally because dean wanted to save sam and dean killed that man in s10 because he was a demon and sam sold that man's soul accidentally in the process of saving dean mission and Charlie died too and dean blamed sam for that like the way in S9 when sam blamed dean for Kevin's death.
      Summary :
      S8 : sam and dean both agreed to choose each other instead of closing the gates of hell coz one had to die ( both choosed each other)
      S9 - dean accidentally killed kevin by Sam's hands ( process of saving Sam)
      S10 - sam accidentally killed an innocent man by Dean's hands. (Sold his soul accidentally in the process of saving dean)
      S10 - sam accidentally let charlie die in the process of saving dean from the mark of cain.
      S10: to save dean sam set darkness free and started an apocalypse again.
      S10 ending - finally both choosed each other once again

He actually got Sam's body involved, Kevin was killed by Sam's own hands though it wasn't actually him, the guilt is not really the same. Not to forget Sam had absolutely no choice but Dean had also got Crowley in his trunk but didn't get to him after Gadreel arrived, he could do thtat too, you know! Neither of them blameworthy for me, but not that similar either.

    One quick thing castiel should still have his wings, he wasn’t casted out, his grace was removed and metatron send him to earth and then casted out all the angels, so when he got his grace back he should have had his wings, as it was being casted out that damaged all angels wings

    This show post-S5 would have been so much better if they let Dean and Sam finally split up and had two branching stories that would converge again, occasionally. There were too many moments like these that never lead to real consequences that the two had to grow from.
    I remember even when they announced the show was continuing after S5, I disliked seeing Sam return to Dean and then Dean losing family because of it. It was also a missed opportunity for him to empathize with his dad, finally. He never learned to understand the importance of training his family to protect themselves because the writers took the easy way out.

    Sam and Dean were written so hyprocritical Dean also gets mad at Sam for saving him when he doesnt wanna be saved yet ignores when Sam tells him the same thing. I guess when it all comes down to it both of the brothers say what they dont mean when they're angry but at the end of the day they know damn well that they can't live without each other.

    I would follow him wherever he went. I wouldn't stop. If being a part of their lives means I get killed then so be it. Safety is overrated and boring. At least I'd actually live with them and when I die, I know they'd remember me and my life would mean something. And I'd never allow them to beat themselves up about it.

    • @snokbert2906
      @snokbert2906 6 лет назад +11

      What Sam was doing back then was certainly wrong, but Dean managed to argue against it in ways that were frustrating. Nobody knew that him killing Lilith would start the apocalypse. As far as everyone knew until the very end, killing her was the only way to stop it, and Sam had the power to realistically do so. The whole, 'each other before the entire world thing' certainly grew tiresome as it went on season after season. My favorite part was when Dean told Sam to use the knife instead of his powers, blatantly telling him that he'd rather murder innocent people than have Sam do his thing. The whole thing is grey, and its a matter of perspective, but Dean just happened to grate on me, while I found Sam to be more relatable.

    • @ankitg7994
      @ankitg7994 6 лет назад +2

      Hey , I get it, you relate with Sam more. I like Sam a lot , too. But , I am just defending Dean of things that are not his fault always. Dean never blamed Sam for killing Lilith, he blamed him for betraying his trust. Kind of like what Sam is doing in this video. Both are justified. Yes, it has been repeated that both choose each other over the world. That is their fatal flaw, their achilles heel. Dean acknowledges this. But when push comes to shove, they are unable to let the other one go for the world ( Even though Dean did do it in "Swan Song" ). This flaw defines their characters. As far as using the demon knife goes, Dean says that once, but on being rebuked for it by Sam, he backs off. But that very Sam , goes on ahead draining blood from possessed people, killing the victims. As you said, the situation is gray. Dean would rather save his brother from going down a dark path than save the possessed ones( at least that's his first instinct). Sam weighs the situation with logic and decides when it is okay for him to kill the victims for the "greater good". I loved it when they showed the repercussions. That is the problem with his 'logic' here. Using evil means to get good ends generally results in catastrophe. It IS a matter of perspective, and Sam just seemed to be more jarring to me. Yes, Dean is flawed. Who isn't? Yes, Dean chooses his family over the world. It is easy to take the high road and say one would not do the same. But when push comes to shove, almost everyone does choose Family. Hell, even Sam did it a lot of times. When Dean is at fault, his first instinct is to take on all the responsibility and guilt for it, not to apologise. As far as I see, taking responsibility is much better than an apology in most scenarios anyway. But that is just his first instinct, his reflex. After reflex, he does the logical thing as well. He did apologise to Sam and to Kevin's ghost later on.

    The fact that Dean is never going to let Sam ever die in peace is so sad. Dean needs to get over the fact that he’s not failing his brother if Sam dies, he’s only bringing more pain to him and himself.
    He treats his brother as if he were a little kid and that was suppose to change since Season 5, but clearly that’s no longer the case.

      Dean was being a dick who didn't even apologize, didn't try to understand how Sam feels because all he could think about is how he feels "I'm poison". It's like Sam has said. That isn't the problem. The problem is that he's too absorbed in his self-loathing to even see how Sam feels.

      Sam was completely right in this whole situation. He's had his free will taken from him so many times, and Dean knows it, and then Dean goes and takes it away from him *again* by tricking him into possession. He lied to him about it for so long, and it made Sam concerned through a lot of it when he did so, because Dean pretty much made him feel crazy for thinking he's missing time or whatever, when there's a real reason why and Dean is the cause of it. Then Dean goes on to have a pity party for himself, not even acknowledging the pain he caused Sam by doing this...
