Everything afterwards (SPOILERS) with the civil wars in heaven (arch angel, factions, Metatron), purgatory, and the rest are just the fallout of what preceeded this. Even the whole issue with Lucifer in season 12 is heavily overshadowed by season 5. I don't appreciate how they've downplayed Dean's trip to hell in the later seasons. I mean in season 12 when Sam and Dean were captured by the Men of Letters, Dean described the few weeks there as "worse than hell". This doesn't do their history justice.
