For a beginner first time marathon runner that only runs recreationally, my biggest advice is respect the distance, but don’t be afraid of it. As long as you have some sort of base fitness and can physically run 10-13 miles, you can do 26. It might be really slow and you might need to walk quite a bit, but you can get through. Once you do, and you have a good idea what you’re getting into, you’ll be able to listen to various videos or read various books and have a better understanding of what realistic will work for you and your family/work balance.
I spent nearly 10 years wanting to do a marathon but never doing one because of being intimidated by various videos saying you need XYZ, and to train for X months before registering for your first marathon. Then, once you register, you need to do ABC. I finally pulled the trigger and went from couch to marathon in just 5 weeks. I went a 5hr 15min marathon. Within less than a year, I’ve done an ultra and have more lined up and am almost under 4hrs for the marathon. My goal is to be sub 4 by the end of 2024 in marathon and sub 5 for 50k, and sub 3 by 2025!

Just to say thanks again, following your advice since start of year. Knocked my half pb again from 138 to 132.1. Your advice was so helpful- training 90% physical 10%mental racing is 10%physical 90% mental- helped me through. Incorporating lots of the elements and training you recommended has resulted in steady progress. Your Marathon plan is life changing! Thanks Scully

Too much money can make you weak, make bad choices, be lazy and empty inside . I like to run my shoes until I think there causing me problems then wear them as casual trainers and then to my work lol. It may sound stupid and insignificant but it keeps me in check ,gives a balance to how not to spend your way to greatness and a sense of pride that the £175 a time Nikes isn’t just a look at me moment. It’s no different from getting lazier as you get older ,just a way to apply the concept at an earlier age .GREAT VIDEO 💪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thank you, Stephen, for such a deep content! I'd like to express my agreement with you, that it's an absolutely great feeling when you stay in front of start line of marathon definitely knowing that the run will be PB. I was preparing for 12 months for my second marathon (1st one was 3:16h) and that was not about my PB anymore, that was about my sub3 and I knew that I was capable. Finally I broke my PB by 18min ✅ thank you for what you do, you're a great source of inspiration! ✌💥👍🙂

    Great video.
For me the hardest challenge is not burning out.
I have only been running for a year now, after a more than 6 year of not running and before that training 6 times a week on a decent level.
I want to go too fast and too much to get back at that level, but I am older now and it takes more time than I want too.
I have to stay patient and build slower.

My quads are the first and only thing to hit the wall... they do seem to be getting more resilient with each and every 20 miler. I haven't seemed to nail pre race nutrition. I think I eat too close to the race, I'm taking out morning smoothies (always feels like I want to throw up the whole race). Good thing about training is the trial and error.

Very helpful pointers here, though I am already far along the training cycle. I am running Chicago in less than 2 weeks, so I am just starting to taper for that (I feel well prepared). I have two more marathons coming up: NYC in November, which will be more of a "fun run", since Chicago is my goal race. Then it's Boston next April (I have a 19 minute cushion for getting in, so feel pretty confident of getting in). If you have any suggestions for how to approach the issue of back-to-back marathons (4 weeks between Chicago & NYC), let me know, even if it's "that's crazy".

    Question man
I recently ran a 5k tempo on an attempt to beat my pr .
    Which I did by 69 seconds . It's 20:50 now 🎉🎉
Something occur in the run that baffles me .
I ran the first 2.5k at 4:00 per km.
I felt like I was kinda suffercating a bit until I slowed down to about 4:20 per km(for the start of the 4th km). Then I felt like I catch back myself with that pace and was able to maintain that pace and finally increase my pace to about 4:11 for the last km.
Ideally, I felt like I won't had been able to catch my breath like that for the 4km and still run faster for the last km.. what do u think can cause that
Hoping for a response mate 👊

After my 3rd Marathon I realized that I need to work on my mental ability to push harder during training. So my Question: Does your Master Class / Marathon Training Plan help a slow runner like me (4h52 marathon)?
I set myself a goal of improving my time by 10% but that needs more focused training.
