Is the enjoyment of pain a requirement to do well in ultra running? If yes, what is the attraction of this for those who don't look forward to nor enjoy pain?
My family loves me, we see each other all the time. But I don’t go to their sports and they don’t come to mine. We each enjoy a sport community - a different “chosen” family. Then we share our trials and triumphs over coffee on Thursday mornings - the photo show offs, the groans and grins. Not being there physically doesn’t mean not proud or supportive. And… in the race she is in her own head, and at the end she is swamped with friends, sponsors and fans! Nothing wrong with that! I’m not saying they shouldn’t be there. Just that they might “be there” for her in a different way.
