I’m a retired professional and when my D3 recently died due to electronics failure, Nikon quoted me $680 to repair it. Instead, I found several refurbished D3 bodies on B&H and got the one in best condition for $1300 and my baby is back! The condition is way better than I expected, probably purchased by a beginner who wanted the best but it was too much camera for him or her. I shoot only RAW .nef files uncompressed at 14bit. Backup camera is a D700.
I recommend the D3 even in 2020! I just got my D3 and it is in. Great shape and shutter count is only around 9k, Most of these have had the works beat out of them. I would recommend it for event and portrait photography, for weddings maybe, not so much for landscape where you may want make large prints. The camera is a workhorse and tough as battleship. I still recommend this camera in 2020!
This video is 8 years old but to put some of this in perspective for 2023 I own both the D3 and D700. I bought my D700 in the summer of 2016 off Craigslist for $300 with a shutter count of around 53K (has 53,689 today), the D3 I bought off eBay in Dec 2022 for $365 with a shutter count of 20,241 as of today. Both camera bodies came in original packing. On the battery question I agree the Nikon brand is expensive and I think the D700 battery is no longer made. I bought the less expensive Wasabi Power brand for both cameras and have had no issues with these batteries. I would not sell either of these bodies as I think they are the cat's ass and will serve me well as a newbie to photography.
Bought a Nikon D3 in late 2018. Mistake? I have never owned a full frame. Had a D7000 and went to the D7100 but couldn't live with the buffer on it. Theoria, did I do ok considering money was an issue.
"I love heavy cameras". Never have I heard someone else say that. People have always called me weird when I say a D610 is too small without the battery grip. They also say I'm weird when I say I wish I could shoot with my Pentax 6x7. Heavy cameras are so much more satisfying in the hand, they give you powers and a strong right hand.
after watched this video in last week , I started looking for these 2 Nikon ... I found and bought both of them D3 57,000 clicks in mint condition for $532 D700 15,400 clicks like new condition for $590 Thanks for everything you've done for the review and video , Ken Also my wife just toll me : STOP watching his video for 6 months ... - huh ?? hahaha I just bought brand new D810 + Voigtlander 58/1.4 in couple months ago so maybe sell it back ??
Pleased you got your baby back. I need to get a new rubber thumb grip for the back of my D3. I bought my camera when it was released and used it so much the grip wore so thin it eventually fell off. Im scared to look at the shutter count. It just keeps going and going. I love it more than the wife, well at least it responds. Great vid as usual Ken, keep up the good work. UK subscriber.
I am now a proud owner of a Nikon D3 as of a couple days ago! All specs talk aside, I "love" holding this camera and I don't find it heavy at all because it is so well balanced! It is hard to imagine that a camera that sold for $5,000 US I was able to get for $650 CAD and it is close to mint condition ...talk about looking at the right time and in the right place! Lucky me!
I just got my D3 from eBay today and it is a giant piece of crap! I mean seriously, it's only 12MP! How can I live with only 12MP?!?! I think I am going to wait until Nikon releases their new 900MP mirrorless camera with Wifi/Facebook/Dropbox/Flickr/Sirius Satellite Radio/Google Maps/built-in blender/rock polisher/tampon dispenser.
TheGriffinmp my brothers always said to ignore big pixels unless your doing huge prints is this correct? I need a camera for indoor and outdoor fashion photos but only for website and maybe the odd 6ft high poster. Any recommendations please? Don't want to spend more than £2000 and don't mind used. No need for video
I bought a Nikon D3 with 12,300 shutter actuations! Barely used. Basically in mint condition. Delighted. It will make a nice companion for my D3X which is my main landscape camera.
I just snag a D3 on Ebay for $329.99 looking like new with just 45,708 on the shutter. Sure, the D3s may be better on high ISO values than the original D3, but I already have a D4 for that matter. The D3 is the first official FX from Nikon, there is a little bit of history in owning the D3.
I own the latest Nikon cameras. My D3 and D700 will be passed on to family members eventually as the best I own. Both were used for shooting many weddings and other events 2008-2012 and were the best. The only issue for some would be that the viewfinder on the D3 was 100% while the D700 has a 95% view. But that never bothered me. If you get a chance to buy one, do so.
***** no, because i dont need the video, and since it usually costs a FORTUNE more than the D3, id call it a "bad value" build quality etc yes, just as good........price is HORRIFIC EVIL
I really really really want to buy a d3 to go along with my d810 and d7200. do you know if the files are very clean at 3200 iso? does the camera have any focus issues in low light? is the sensor the same on the d3s. do you recommend the d3 over the d3s?
My mint condition D3s joins the ranks with my 2 D700s and D7100. My big hands love the D3s and the faster shutter speed. Still love my D700 for street photography though. Abut a used BMW over new crap cars... oh yes that is smarter money well spent! Saving for one myself. You should do a few more videos on the D3.
Hi Theoria, I do love heavy cameras as well - forget about all those trendy little toy cameras especially without a viewfinder :)) - I`ve bought my D700 with a MB-D10 battery grip at the end of 2008 as my entry into the digital photography and in addition to my F4s, which I`m still using, too - I`m still using this camera as a workhorse not as a "save queen" nearly every day under all conditions, no issues since then, no inspection needed - the results are brilliant - very good Matrix and iTTL flash metering, the best I`ve ever seen, even with the small often underestimated pop-up flash - to control as many off-camera flashes you need via camera menu and the pop-up flash is quite handy (I use up to 7 iTTL speedlites and my 3 old SB-24) - up to now I really have no need for any upgrade - why isn`t there a pop-up flash on pro cameras, not only for having a flash when needed, but to trigger and control compatible off-camera flashes without having a extra speedlight only as a master on camera - ok, I know about radio flash triggers and controllers, but that`s not the point ;)
I took your advice and just bought a used D3 with 83,000 shots on it. Wow, it is in pretty good cosmetic condition. Couldn’t find a better camera for £450 in the UK. Only downside is the cost of a battery, but I am sure the camera will last me for at least 5 years, and will still be worth repairing if anything should go wrong. I am just a keen amateur, not professional.
Same thing here , I saved one bought it for 249£ minty condition,( 60.000 clicks) just the battery 🪫 life is out, then again plenty of other 3th party battery 🔋 replacements available for cheap ! Enjoy! 📸
I like the voice memo idea, mostly because I shoot extensively with M42 Takumars. My Pentax DSLR will record shutter speed and even focal length when I'm using these old beasts (it asks for it for the in-body shake reduction), but of course it can't and won't record the aperture!
Need your experiencie with a piece of advice: between a Nikon D3 with 150.000 clicks and a Nikon D700 with 10.000 shoots, both with the same price, where would you go your money? Thanks in advance. Regards.
Hi Ken! I've been testing my recently purchased D3 and found something quite interesting. The camera works great, but suddenly vertical lines start to show up in some pictures taken with the camera. You could see them in the back screen and in the computer. The weird thing is that later on (could be 30 shots or so) those lines disappear and everything goes back to normal. This thing happened to me twice now. I would like to send you a couple of pictures so you know what I´m talking about. Some say could be the sensor (hope not!!!) and others say could be just the CF card (it´s a brand new Lexar 1066x I guess) Please, I need some help!!! P.S. I bought it from UsedPhotoPro one month ago, and the condition was very good, so I should have warranty on this but my first choice is not the send it back. It only has less than 46,000 shots. Thanks!
I own the D700 love it in every way. Also love optical viewfinder no delay with real world like with a digital viewfinder. Digital viewfinder everything you see on it is already past in real-time due to connection delay. But you are saying that D3 is better in high iso? Dxo tells different? What's your real world experience? Thanks
Love your videos and opinions, Theoria! I just picked up a D3 in great shape with 114K clicks for $700. I'm planning on using as a complement to my D800e. What's your impression of that combo? I am an "enthusiast" (or whatever the hell that means) who is getting side jobs for family photography, weddings, architecture and landscape commissions. Thought about getting a D7100 for some extra reach, but the D3 is intoxicating. Thanks!
Hi Ken, I have D3 , 35-70 f/2.8D and 50mm f/1.8g... Live view and Mirror Up mode does not work with 35-70 but works with 50mm and other modern lenses I have. Any reason for it ?
A fellow youtuber, Photouniverse said that Nikon and Pentax SLR's have a higher dynamic range than Canon SLR's, do you know why this is so and has it historically been this way?
Richard Stevens thats very true. even more so with the D750 and D810 Canons AD conversion and SNR algos are designed for higher LL rejection which helps their buffer speed transfers. if that changes in their new generation, who knows.
Still payed 1000euro here in Belgium, maybe a bit too much but like you said in the video, D3's in mint condition and very low shuttercount are hard too find :-) I thougt it was worth it
What? The bodies say differently: i.ebayimg.com/images/g/HGUAAOSwKEhcgXjz/s-l1600.jpg All the Dx series were made in Japan. The currently produced Japanese bodies are the D5, Df, Z6 and Z7
Hey Ken, thanks for all your wisdom. I've had d700 since new. Thinking of getting a D500 for action and keeping D700 for landscape. Would that make sense to you? Is the D700 still good for landscape? cheers PS i'll ping you $10
Hi, the base and CF door D3 rubbers have detached now, I've tried rubber cement though the rubbers have 'stretched'. I have re-stuck them using double sided tape - which has worked reasonably well - and trimmed the items with a scapel. Not great looking, though okay for now. The rub is - I don't seem to be able to source(I'm in the UK) the thumb grip, except with the door complete. I just need the rubber part only, really. Only item I can find online is part of a complete set of rubbers & door for about £175. Any idea how I can get this part individually? Nikon seems very blinkered in this respect as my D3 would still be a good advert for Nikon. Without the part it looks bad on Nikon; to the point I'd be reluctant to buy another Nikon body! Fortunately, my D80 is still perfect as is my D7000. 😎
I just got one from Japan in mint condition with only 10K Shutter clicks! It's like new and I love it! Nice addition to my D7100 and D700. Cheers and thanks to the Angry photographer for his much-appreciated guidance and expertise.
@david lall get a d600 with over 3000 actuations, the mechanism should be oil free by then, clean the sensor and install a firmware update 2, bar the half a fame a second you've got a d610 - a lot cheaper. Ive got one with 20k accusations and its fine, apart from I bought a D700 as a back up from Mr Angry's recommendation and its so awesome I've got to sell the D600 to get another D700! BTW D700 does 8 frames per second with AA's in the battery grip.
D3 over a possible d750? I will be shooting all summer in my rural town in Mexico after having not been there for over 10 years. I hope to document the trip and dont know if the weight of the d3 will be too much. Also, thinking the MP count of the 750 might be better as well. Can you speak to this? Thank you for the quick reply
Bought my latest D3 just a few weeks ago in July 2018 with 70k clicks in excellent condition for 540€!!!! There is nothing about it, it rattles away like a happy machine gun; takes great images. You can crop the piss out of the pro cameras with sharp lenses, I recently sold a 1,6MP crop of a bee on a flower I took with a 50 1.8D. Its 2018, my iPhone also has 12MP and its crap!!!
I just received a used d3 I ordered from Adorama that was noted in "Excellent" condition for just under $1k. Camera appears to be in near mint condition except for some extremely light wear on the bottom....and I mean light! Just checked shutter count and it is at ONLY 8,275!! Lucked out! What a score! I had also ordered a Nikon d700 w/ grip for about $100 less from an eBay seller. Was planning to compare both and then decide which one I was going to keep. Looks like it will most likely be the d3! Figured I would let you know because I ended up finding your video after I had purchased them and was searching around on the tube for comparisons. I too had terribly missed the d3 that I had sold about 3 years ago (although that one did have the buffer upgrade).
thats a deal man!!! welllllll, the D700 has more color rich images, but the D3 is the tank……the D700 is really the little brother of the D3……both have the same sensor :) ive got 2 D3 nikon, ill never get rid of em !!!!
I just ordered a d3 under 60,000 and some screen fog, I paid £340 thay gave it 8/10. And said that without the screen, it would have been a 9 plus more cash. Apparently, its quite common and doesn't have any effect when the camera is on.
Too much ;) Let's just say I paid exactly what you said you'd expect to pay for a like-new USA model D3 with very low mileage. Comes with 2 Nikon batteries, box and all original accessories. Can't wait to get that beast in my grubby little hands and hit the streets!
hey Ken, if price wasn't an issue - would the D4 be a better camera than the D3 for color rendering and tonal depth. I've read somewhere that the D4 has 24.7 bits and the D3 has 23.5 bits of color and the D4 has better dynamic range. Just wanted your thoughts about the D4 taking away price as a factor. If you can do a video about the D4 that would be great :)
+Theoria Apophasis thanks K. There's one going around for 1500 with 50k clicks in my area. I think that's extremely good value then if it's better than the D3 :)
When I look at my D3 I always think of the legendary and beautiful heavy lady Aretha Franklin. That's what I've named mine, Aretha. There was only one Aretha! I love it.
I just picked up a Nikon D3. Looking forward to putting it through its paces! I decided I need the lowlight and FPS for what I shoot. My D7100 can handle everything else.
I bit the bullet and bought a D3 as a second camera to my D810. My skills aren't good enough to make use of the full potential of either of the cameras, but sue me, I like to have nice crap. Anyway, does the D3S warrant the higher price tag. I paid $1200 for my D3 with about 50,000 clicks. A similar D3S would be about $1800-2000. What does a guy get for the extra $600-800?
TheGriffinmp hell no on the D3s or D3x, triple hell no. 50,000, thats NOTHING for the D3 !!! $1200, perfect price. for $800 more you get FLUFF and BS , hahahahhahaha The D3 is an insane tank wrapped inside a tank. :P
Dear Ken, Thanks for your former advices! I have a D700 and D300. I'd like to ask your opinion about D3 vs D3s. I can get the D3 like new with less then six thousand clicks! But as I'm shooting among other things some wildlife I am thinking about the apparently proved over 1 stop high ISO advantage that the D3s would have over the D3. The "like new" D3 in question would be 1250 euros and the D3s could maybe be found for some more and with much more clicks. Here is France to change the shutter would cost up to 1000 euros! Another question is, do you think that using the D3s' video mode regularly or intensively could shorten the sensors life? I know that it was definitely the case of the Canons 5Dm2. Thanks in advance! And thanks for saving us money and pointing out what "really matters"! Christoph
Richard B. both those are insanely more expensive........the X is just 24MP the S is just some minor BS and video i dont care about video on my cameras........both the S and X versions are far too insanely expensive, and nothing really better over the D3
I just bought a D3s (I only want the iso 1600-6400). 15K kliks. Looks like brand new. MH-22 charger. One brand new EN-EL4a, one week old, never used. One used EN-EL4a, condition level 3. Price? 900 euro! No second thoughts, I said "yes"!
+Tommy Jonas Eeeeeeek !!!!! its on its last leg for a $600 replacement of the shutter assy. which is MAJOR "surgery" i HAVE seen some D3 shutters go beyond 500,000, but at 300,000 its a CRAP SHOOT how long it will go on. $200 more you can get a D3 from Roberts with 80,000 or so clicks. .........call up COREY at USED PHOTO PRO (same people as Roberts)
D3 are always worn ragged up one side and down the other :) Ohhhhh used photo pro has it for sale????? 180 day warranty if it fails (the shutter) within that time. that however IS a weeeeeeee too many shutter clicks however :/ if you chill your heels, theyll have one for about $1200 with about 80,000 or so clicks they always do
Cool thanks was looking for a back up body for my d7100 which I love. I saw in another one of your videos you recommended a d700 but they sold out of that one before I could grab one. I may just hold out for the D3 like you said or just buy a refurbished d7100 for 500.00
D3 and D700 have same sensor but WAYY diff output. The D700 has a legendary (i own 2 of em) output people swoon over..........problem is, since i mentioned how FING great they are, prices went up on used ones (DOOOOH!) well, i can see the logic of a second D7100, but would strongly consider that you yourself consider a D3 or D700 both are just as tough, and weigh a TON. My D3 (one of em) is right here beside me, my lap dog :P
Gary Park - I beat ya, I just got a perfect D3 with only 175 clicks!!!! I’m guessing it sat in a closet or something, LOL. I paid over $800 for it but considering the condition I think I got a deal! tinyurl.com/y5s65f3b (view original item if eBay says it is showing you one you might like instead) I am picky about my gear so I pay a little more for used stuff that has been taken care of. I got a D2x that only has like 2000 clicks that is in perfect shape, not one scratch and I only paid $150 for that! I love that camera it just struggles in low light, this D3 is MUCH better and full frame. I was only going to sell my D2x but it’s not worth anything more than $150 since most are beat up and people assume a camera that old is like all the rest of them so I’m just gonna keep it.
i remember drooling over these when they first came out years ago insane amount of $$ new but now reachable but as you stated rare to find one that hasnt been hammered to the shit or pricey having been kept in cotton wool
Oh didn't know you had a D3:-) I'm very satisfied with my D3 for sure:-) It just keep on rocking. I had it for some years now and only around 140k clicks:-)
The d3 one of the best cameras ever It's fast it's great it's beast 50 point focus points Iso low light I can't wait I bought it I can't wait until it shipped to me Thus guy paid twice the price for one camera he just kept it and he would of paid for one
The D3 is a beast!!!!!! I love mine. I use it mainly for night street photography due to it's high ISO capabilities. Focus is so quick and when you want it to shoot it just shoots, unlike my Fuji X100T which suffers from lag.
+Theoria Apophasis If I could combine the responsiveness of my D3 with the sensor of the Fuji, then I would have my ideal camera. By the sounds of it the XT1 could well be the offspring of this union????
Indeed. You are good at that! I'm really considering it haha! Madness. I love the D800 IQ and ISO performance but 9fps and tank-like build is not something to ignore. I shoot live bands and dance, which is why I like the ISO on the 800. But 36mp isn't really necessary for me. Do you think the D3 can compete?
can compete, yes,....but its still kinda an apples and oranges comparison, but i listed its downside and positives in this video. it will certainly outlive them all in "miles" :)
Matt Palmer I have both. I bought the D800 when it came out and thought I would use my D3 as a secondary camera. I now use both as primary cameras. The only think Im not as happy with is the LCD screen on the D3. Its only when you put the images onto your computer you see how great they are. Sometimes you have to bring up the metadata to check which camera it was taken with, they are that good compared with the D800. I use both cameras for weddings and use the a wide angle on one and tele on the other. If you have a chance to get a D3 as an extra camera, then do it. They are both fantastic and work well together.
Chris, thank you very much for your reply! You're not making it easier for me to commit to keeping my D800 haha! I think I'm going to try to find a D3 locally to handle.
just got one with 52k clicks i beautiful shape exceft a little fog on the lcd,2 functional batteries a mh23 dual quick chargers, manuals, side mount tripod bracket and it shots and works perfect. so I'm looking at the original box and its pristine and the barcode and price are still on it,$4.999.99 reduced to 1k for me.
I thought you would be interested to know I just purchased a mint D3 with only 4000 on shutter like new for 860$ here in Australia I realise it’s 2021 but I believe I have done very well. Thanks 🙏
Been photo shooting 47 years ...so long time nikon user... i bet owned more lenses than you.... most never used for various reasons.... have a D3, D3x, and a D750... The D3 is my very favorite iso 3200 looks great as iso 200. My kids will use my D3 and D3x for their lifetime ... i enjoy your videos..... I found a D3x new in the box on ebay 1800... so they are out there
Photobymike Michael Green i dont know how many ive owned, something like 1300 or so. I currently have a hair over 105 lenses. ive USED however ALL of them made in the past 40 or so years,......thanks to working at Beach Photo and photography school. new in box D3x for that much? thats cheap.......yes, but its damn RARE to find one that hasnt been shot to hell and back. :) I just have no need for video on my cameras :>
What's your thoughts on the D2X ? Have that as well as the D2H and D1X. Color me crazy but I like them as well. D2H not as much as the D1X. The D1X has unique vivid color. I see you really like the D810, finally got one, but it seems to have severe noise issues at any Iso. Not sure if it's a bad camera or normal because of the high pixels exaggerating everything. Lightroom 5.7.1 does very little to bring anything in raw files out unless close to perfect to begin with out of camera. Color noise is insane. I'm using mostly a 300mm 2.8 AF, 80-200 2.8 and 60mm micro for the most part.
There are actually several D3's floating around my area. Good shape, too. They just don't sell because they fall into the odd zone of "too outdated" for serious guys (around here) and too expensive for the beginners.
SkylerKing nahhh, serious guys are still shooting the D3, it will crank out shots faster than a machinegun likewise its THE TOUGHEST DSLR ever made by anyone, Canon, Nikon etc. The people that think its "outdated" are just Techno-brainwashed. Ive got a pair of D810, ive got all the latest and greatest stuff.......i know better than call it outdated.
Theoria Apophasis I completely agree with you about the D3, I guess what I mean by "serious" guys is more of a "the locals who have lots of money to spend on their photography hobby". Also, I just checked the prices again. Locally, the D3 is selling for $1,400. There is also a D700 selling for $600. If I had money to throw around, I would buy both.
hehehe, ive got 105 Nikkor lenses and 8 DSLR bodies... ive got the funds to buy ANYTHING, of course...........soooo. $600? crap, what the shutter count??? BUY IT
Theoria Apophasis This is the D700 body, being advertised for $645 (my friend asked him about a lower price, and he offered to sell for $613). goods.ruten.com.tw/item/show?21526892639687 This is a D700 body, battery grip, 50mm f1.8, 28-85 f3.5-4.5, and 75-300 f4.5-5.6 Advertised for $1,258 but when my wife asked about a lower price, he offered to sell for $1,195. goods.ruten.com.tw/item/show?21520430745306
Ben i have a dilema i want to upgrade from a D2X for the ISO. I was thinking about the D3s or the 75O. I just bough the 50 nikon 1.4G and i will looove to see it in a FX boddy, for sure i will remember my shoots with the F4 my first baby. best regards from Norway mate.
Hey! So far uve replied to each of my comment so here goes :D Im undecided bw a nikon d7100 and a nikon d610. Which one wud u prefer and why,... sadly a d700 is not an option here.
why? a long list of reasons, you couldnt sell me a mint as new D610 for $800, i STILL wouldnt touch it. the D750 will smoke the dogcrap out of the D610 (new or as new price, not far diff) vs the D750 no comparison.
I recently found your videos, and they have been very helpful. Just returned from vacation. After reviewing the photos I realized that the photos I liked best were those from our Nikon point-and-shoots (P300 and P7000) and not many from my main camera (Sony A6000). The Sony is fine for many things (the RAW files are very good), but I realized how much I miss Nikon colors and the tactility of a DSLR, even a heavy one. There were also other issues with the A6000 such as the tiny viewfinder for eyeglass wearers and sub-par jpegs. I also don't need the 24 mp. I am selling the A6000 and lenses and purchasing a used D700.
And even in 2022!
@@black-and-light Yes and even in 2023
This video is 8 years old but to put some of this in perspective for 2023 I own both the D3 and D700.
How do you feel about the d3 for 2018. I’m looking into getting one for sports.
Kassiem Pope Yep! I got mine this year and love it! It’s a workhorse, would not recommend for landscape for large prints! I would go for it!
It's great
Rizvi Rahman I never knew that, I have learned something new:-)
Bought a Nikon D3 in late 2018. Mistake? I have never owned a full frame. Had a D7000 and went to the D7100 but couldn't live with the buffer on it. Theoria, did I do ok considering money was an issue.
Depends if you enjoy the D3 or not.
How is the D3? You still have it?
Just purchased today a D3, mint condition for personal use, already have pair of D800's and D850 but always wanted one of these.
2023 and still using my beloved D3, its serve me well and suit all my need, best camera ever made by nikon
Is a D3s with 140k clicks a decent buy?
I had nikon d7100 i sold it and buy Nikon d700 tank body still great Camera in Nov 2018 i love it
Yeah the D700 is awesome
isn't d7100 preforming almost the same as d700?
Thanks for all the videos. I have a d7000 and am looking to go fx. I shoot mostly macro and some weddings. Would you recommend'the d700 or d3? Thanks.
ArrKayCee or left hand.
Ken, what newer Nikon which has the same/similar color tone output to D700 and D3?
after watched this video in last week , I started looking for these 2 Nikon ... I found and bought both of them
D3 57,000 clicks in mint condition for $532
D700 15,400 clicks like new condition for $590
Thanks for everything you've done for the review and video , Ken
Also my wife just toll me : STOP watching his video for 6 months ...
- huh ?? hahaha
I just bought brand new D810 + Voigtlander 58/1.4 in couple months ago so maybe sell it back ??
I love my D2X! Not good above 400ISO, but colors look great. At less than $500 it is a good deal if you can't afford the D3.
Chris Chadwick you can buy that rubber off ebay and use the contact cement, and apply it
done it before, its real easy !! :)
thanks man
I am now a proud owner of a Nikon D3 as of a couple days ago! All specs talk aside, I "love" holding this camera and I don't find it heavy at all because it is so well balanced! It is hard to imagine that a camera that sold for $5,000 US I was able to get for $650 CAD and it is close to mint condition ...talk about looking at the right time and in the right place! Lucky me!
Damn, I got mine for 250 dollars, no signs of usage and shutter count 100k
I just got my D3 from eBay today and it is a giant piece of crap! I mean seriously, it's only 12MP! How can I live with only 12MP?!?!
I think I am going to wait until Nikon releases their new 900MP mirrorless camera with Wifi/Facebook/Dropbox/Flickr/Sirius Satellite Radio/Google Maps/built-in blender/rock polisher/tampon dispenser.
TheGriffinmp Hahahahhahahahahahhaha
TheGriffinmp my brothers always said to ignore big pixels unless your doing huge prints is this correct? I need a camera for indoor and outdoor fashion photos but only for website and maybe the odd 6ft high poster. Any recommendations please? Don't want to spend more than £2000 and don't mind used. No need for video
Mert Kabakci thanks. I got the d750 in the end at a decent price brand new. I will get the 85mm next I bought the 50mm1.4g for personal use
get a dD810
You can NOT live with a 5000 Dollar camera???.Maybe its better you STOP immediately with photography RIGHT NOW.
So basically stick with the D700?
Pls answer, i take bird photograohy and a bit landscape photography i have the d600 should i switch?
i dont tell anyone to sell their stuff
@@KenTheoriaApophasis no but do you Think i would be happy with the d3
I'm new to this game. What Speedlite is appropriate for the Nikon D3 with the autofocus assis?
I bought a Nikon D3 with 12,300 shutter actuations! Barely used. Basically in mint condition. Delighted. It will make a nice companion for my D3X which is my main landscape camera.
I just snag a D3 on Ebay for $329.99 looking like new with just 45,708 on the shutter. Sure, the D3s may be better on high ISO values than the original D3, but I already have a D4 for that matter. The D3 is the first official FX from Nikon, there is a little bit of history in owning the D3.
Is there a difference in build quality between D3 & D2X?
I own the latest Nikon cameras. My D3 and D700 will be passed on to family members eventually as the best I own. Both were used for shooting many weddings and other events 2008-2012 and were the best. The only issue for some would be that the viewfinder on the D3 was 100% while the D700 has a 95% view. But that never bothered me. If you get a chance to buy one, do so.
Do you put the D3s up there alongside the D3 as far as build quality and recommended secondary backup?
***** no, because i dont need the video, and since it usually costs a FORTUNE more than the D3, id call it a "bad value"
build quality etc yes, just as good........price is HORRIFIC EVIL
Theoria Apophasis Great points!
Yannick Khong Ya, I sort of need that high ISO stuff since I do a lot of indoor action sports events (dog-type sports).
I really really really want to buy a d3 to go along with my d810 and d7200. do you know if the files are very clean at 3200 iso? does the camera have any focus issues in low light? is the sensor the same on the d3s. do you recommend the d3 over the d3s?
@Rizvi Rahman I bought a d3s instead and not too long after bought a D5. The D3 and d3s can't compare with the d5
Enjoy! 📸
How do you clean the backside from the LCD screen on the backside from fungus.??
Thanks!
$700? thats a steal :O
I have almost saved up for a Nikon D3s, looking forward to the high ISO usage. I struggle hard at music gigs
You you consider changing a nikon D800 for a D3s or a D4 ?
anything for a D4
Hi Ken, I have D3 , 35-70 f/2.8D and 50mm f/1.8g... Live view and Mirror Up mode does not work with 35-70 but works with 50mm and other modern lenses I have. Any reason for it ?
So, you say the D3 has better high ISO-Performance compared to the D700? Im planning to get a D3 so i'm searching for some comparisons..
A fellow youtuber, Photouniverse said that Nikon and Pentax SLR's have a higher dynamic range than Canon SLR's, do you know why this is so and has it historically been this way?
Richard Stevens thats very true. even more so with the D750 and D810
Canons AD conversion and SNR algos are designed for higher LL rejection which helps their buffer speed transfers.
if that changes in their new generation, who knows.
Just bought a D3 last week with only 7350 clicks....it looks brandnew and after a week of use... Damn I love it, coming from a d300
got it cheap eh?
Still payed 1000euro here in Belgium, maybe a bit too much but like you said in the video, D3's in mint condition and very low shuttercount are hard too find :-) I thougt it was worth it
I've never used the D3 or D4; what makes the construction of the D3 so much better?
the D3, D700 were the last of the nikon cameras to be made in japan
What? The bodies say differently:
i.ebayimg.com/images/g/HGUAAOSwKEhcgXjz/s-l1600.jpg
All the Dx series were made in Japan.
The currently produced Japanese bodies are the D5, Df, Z6 and Z7
Hey Ken, thanks for all your wisdom. I've had d700 since new. Thinking of getting a D500 for action and keeping D700 for landscape. Would that make sense to you?
Is the D700 still good for landscape? cheers
PS i'll ping you $10
Hello what do you think of D2x
ughhh HATE that camera :)
Love my D3,but the mirror suddenly stopped flipping up,is this a common problem? Is it an easy fix?
very rare, .....easy fix? no its the very worst, repair will cost as much as the camera is worth
Theoria Apophasis Was afraid of that, thank you
I somehow in 2018 just found a Nikon D3 damn near brand new with only 17,000 clicks!
hard to find one like that ! :P
I just got one from Japan in mint condition with only 10K Shutter clicks! It's like new and I love it! Nice addition to my D7100 and D700. Cheers and thanks to the Angry photographer for his much-appreciated guidance and expertise.
Just bought a mint condition D200 with 400 clicks for 110$. Love the CCD sensor. This is still an amazing camera.
@@KenTheoriaApophasis would love to hear your thoughts on the d200 in 2019 sir
@david lall get a d600 with over 3000 actuations, the mechanism should be oil free by then, clean the sensor and install a firmware update 2, bar the half a fame a second you've got a d610 - a lot cheaper. Ive got one with 20k accusations and its fine, apart from I bought a D700 as a back up from Mr Angry's recommendation and its so awesome I've got to sell the D600 to get another D700!
BTW D700 does 8 frames per second with AA's in the battery grip.
For possible everyday shooting, do you suggest the d3 for $600 or throwing double the money for the d3s, which has much cleaner high ISO images?
the D3 for sure, as long as its in good shape and has low clicks
I just got one D3s. For $200.
I too had terribly missed the d3 that I had sold about 3 years ago (although that one did have the buffer upgrade).
thats a deal man!!! welllllll, the D700 has more color rich images, but the D3 is the tank……the D700 is really the little brother of the D3……both have the same sensor :)
ive got 2 D3 nikon, ill never get rid of em !!!!
I just ordered a d3 under 60,000 and some screen fog, I paid £340 thay gave it 8/10. And said that without the screen, it would have been a 9 plus more cash. Apparently, its quite common and doesn't have any effect when the camera is on.
Wats the solution for screen Fogg.
@@nishadgawhankar3132 I returned it. Bought a d4.
I use the Nikon d700...Great pictures
Just wondering is it worth it to buy a d750 or a d3???
Juan Reyes ohhh both are close in price, get the D750 man!!!!!
i just love my old Japanese made TANK cameras :P
in 2017 I am SOOO in love with my D3!! but passionately!
Marry it.
No, he gets off on the naughty feeling of living in sin. 😉
Hi Ken, can you please do a video comparing the high iso low light performance of the d3 versus the fuji xt2/xt20 ???
Hey man, I want a camera that is good for adventure/hiking & sports photog and the occasional landscape shot. You reckon this is a good idea?
Buy a Go pro
Ken, is a D3s mint with 3,400 shots worth $1800? Thx
You can get a used D4 for a little over $2000, so no
Just scored a mint D3 with 3,100 clicks. My D700 is already jealous.
how much wuz it? :)
Too much ;) Let's just say I paid exactly what you said you'd expect to pay for a like-new USA model D3 with very low mileage. Comes with 2 Nikon batteries, box and all original accessories. Can't wait to get that beast in my grubby little hands and hit the streets!
awesome man!!!! if you ever order more batts, get WATSON D3 batts
Theoria Apophasis Good to know! Thanks, Ken.
hey Ken, if price wasn't an issue - would the D4 be a better camera than the D3 for color rendering and tonal depth. I've read somewhere that the D4 has 24.7 bits and the D3 has 23.5 bits of color and the D4 has better dynamic range. Just wanted your thoughts about the D4 taking away price as a factor. If you can do a video about the D4 that would be great :)
+Logan Nguyen if price is no issue? yes
I love it.
Do you think the nikon d3x is revelant today in 2019?
Phillip Vastopoulos OF COURSE! That’s what I shoot with. It’s terrible in low light, but I’m buying a D3s in a day or two.
What do you think is a fair price for a D3 with 12k actuations in excellent shape?
with box? $1000, better still the REAL fair price is about 925$
I just picked up a Nikon D3. Looking forward to putting it through its paces! I decided I need the lowlight and FPS for what I shoot. My D7100 can handle everything else.
+Darryl Cobb heavy as hell isnt it :P
Theoria Apophasis I will find out Monday! I can't wait! My first full frame camera! Time to rock those high FPS!!! Recommend any CF Cards for it?
that camera is fucking liquid sex, id screw it
but cant find a hole big enough
Hi Ken:
What made you decide on getting your D3 back?
mixc8 sentimental and emotional attachment :P
that , and its made like a tank to shoot forever :P hahahha
Got one for 390 Bocks 56.000 shutter 🥰🥰 I call it the deal of my life
I love your videos so much keep them going
My D3 arrived today! 10,200 actuations for £710!
Do you think is worth selling a nikon d800 for a Nikon D3 with 78.000 actuations ?
heheheh, noooooooo.
Any thoughts on it's predecessor the D2x??
yeah, a nightmare, namely the battery life
Just finally got mine. 560k shutter count and it’s still working pretty good.
$1200, perfect price.
for $800 more you get FLUFF and BS , hahahahhahaha
The D3 is an insane tank wrapped inside a tank. :P
Dear Ken,
Thanks for your former advices!
Christoph
Any ideas about the D3 with dubble amount of pixels "the D3x" or more humble "the D3s" ? Have money to burn...
Richard B. both those are insanely more expensive........the X is just 24MP
the S is just some minor BS and video
i dont care about video on my cameras........both the S and X versions are far too insanely expensive, and nothing really better over the D3
Found a used Nikon D3 for about 899.00 with about 300,000 shutters count on it. Do you think that would be a great purchase?
+Tommy Jonas Eeeeeeek !!!!! its on its last leg for a $600 replacement of the shutter assy. which is MAJOR "surgery"
i HAVE seen some D3 shutters go beyond 500,000, but at 300,000 its a CRAP SHOOT how long it will go on.
$200 more you can get a D3 from Roberts with 80,000 or so clicks. .........call up COREY at USED PHOTO PRO (same people as Roberts)
Thats crazy they have it listed as a good purchase on usedphotopro.com smh Thanks for the warning
D3 are always worn ragged up one side and down the other :)
Ohhhhh used photo pro has it for sale????? 180 day warranty if it fails (the shutter) within that time.
that however IS a weeeeeeee too many shutter clicks however :/
if you chill your heels, theyll have one for about $1200 with about 80,000 or so clicks
they always do
Cool thanks was looking for a back up body for my d7100 which I love. I saw in another one of your videos you recommended a d700 but they sold out of that one before I could grab one. I may just hold out for the D3 like you said or just buy a refurbished d7100 for 500.00
D3 and D700 have same sensor but WAYY diff output. The D700 has a legendary (i own 2 of em) output people swoon over..........problem is, since i mentioned how FING great they are, prices went up on used ones (DOOOOH!)
well, i can see the logic of a second D7100, but would strongly consider that you yourself consider a D3 or D700
both are just as tough, and weigh a TON.
My D3 (one of em) is right here beside me, my lap dog :P
nice video ... χαιρετίσματα από Ελλάδα φίλε! :)
Is it worth it, if i sold my nikon d7000 and buy the d3? Or should i get d600
+Nick Tashnim i dont know what you plan on shooting most
+Theoria Apophasis i shoot wedding and potrait
thats a tough choice, D3 and D600 would be fine for both, any need for the xtra specs on the D600?
At last, you pay a tribute to this lovely yet heavy yet lovely camera :)
Gael Canal had one forever, got rid it, then got it back again.
i just NEEDED it in my hands again to review it with a video
I love big camera
Just bought a mint D3 with only 1000 shutter clicks...has to be the lowest in the world??? Cant wait to use it as it arrives tomorrow 😁😁
I like to shoot concerts, would this do the trick? Just concerned about autofocus in dim venues.
i remember drooling over these when they first came out years ago
insane amount of $$ new but now reachable
but as you stated rare to find one that hasnt been hammered to the shit
or pricey having been kept in cotton wool
a may kept in cotton wool,
U R FUNNY AS HELL MAN!!!! Luv U !!!!
I love my d3s, i also have the d700 for backup. Great duo combo.
+chargr383 i have my pair of D3, love em!!!
@@KenTheoriaApophasis is it worth getting a D3s if you already own a D700? I came across a D3s with 3762 shutter count for 900$...
D3 in Oct.2023! 📸
Oh didn't know you had a D3:-) I'm very satisfied with my D3 for sure:-) It just keep on rocking. I had it for some years now and only around 140k clicks:-)
Sune Tølløse only with a D3 can you say "hell, its only got 140,000 clicks"
Hahahahahaahhaa
i'm looking forward to see how many it does:-)
likely 400,000 or more :P
+Theoria Apophasis Hi i found a nikon d3 for $1400 and that's the one im planning on getting in 4 or 5 months from now.
+Sune Tølløse My have 388k clicks and still going.Bought last week for 580 euro. ;-)
The d3 one of the best cameras ever
It's fast it's great it's beast
50 point focus points
Iso low light
I can't wait I bought it I can't wait until it shipped to me
Thus guy paid twice the price for one camera he just kept it and he would of paid for one
The D3 is a beast!!!!!! I love mine. I use it mainly for night street photography due to it's high ISO capabilities. Focus is so quick and when you want it to shoot it just shoots, unlike my Fuji X100T which suffers from lag.
+Manzur 007 D3 is teh Fing cats ass!!!!
get a Fuji XT1 , while theyre still on sale
+Theoria Apophasis If I could combine the responsiveness of my D3 with the sensor of the Fuji, then I would have my ideal camera. By the sounds of it the XT1 could well be the offspring of this union????
i have 2 XT1 now, yes, its so fun and skinny too.
For crying out loud, man! I already have a D800 but now you have me thinking of getting a D3 instead.
Matt Palmer hehehe, planted a bug in yer brain :P
Should I get a second D700?
I just have no need for video on my cameras :>
Photobymike Michael Green do you still own the D3 sir...
I'm using mostly a 300mm 2.8 AF, 80-200 2.8 and 60mm micro for the most part.
nikon d3 - 30k shutter for $983 good deal?
+joyxkiller and its in great shape otherwise?
answer is HELL YES
30,000 on a D3 is nothing, its still a baby.
Hehe, I got it dude, I freaking LOVE it!
Thanks for making great content and giving great advis for not breaking the bank totally, haha :)
The next thing on the list will be the tamron 70-200 2.8 VC, shooting a lot of sport, so this will be a good combo
hi, its 2020 and im looking at a d700 for 480 usd and a d3 for 630 usd. idk man, help.
There are actually several D3's floating around my area. Good shape, too. They just don't sell because they fall into the odd zone of "too outdated" for serious guys (around here) and too expensive for the beginners.
SkylerKing nahhh, serious guys are still shooting the D3, it will crank out shots faster than a machinegun
likewise its THE TOUGHEST DSLR ever made by anyone, Canon, Nikon etc.

This is a D700 body, battery grip, 50mm f1.8, 28-85 f3.5-4.5, and 75-300 f4.5-5.6
Advertised for $1,258 but when my wife asked about a lower price, he offered to sell for $1,195.

id rather get the one for $613, thats a STEAL
how many clicks? i cant read chinese.
Great review. I love my D3 !
Hey! So far uve replied to each of my comment so here goes :D Im undecided bw a nikon d7100 and a nikon d610. Which one wud u prefer and why,... sadly a d700 is not an option here.
David Lall skrew the D610, BLAAAAH. If you want a FF sensor camera , get a grey market D750 for $1500
absolutely to heck with the D610
Why :(
why? a long list of reasons, you couldnt sell me a mint as new D610 for $800, i STILL wouldnt touch it.
the D750 will smoke the dogcrap out of the D610 (new or as new price, not far diff) vs the D750
no comparison.
so d7100 vs d610 would go to the d7100 right?
the real question is
whats your budget?
what do you shoot mostly?
Chris Fuller Hahahah!!!! A6000 FAIL ehh?
U said --- I am selling the A6000 and lenses and purchasing a used D700.
EPIC WIN COMMENT :P
but they cant, its WAAAAY too expensive to make a camera like that now :P
how can i check my d3 shutter count??
im photoshop or online with an upload link
