Hope the bike owner gets a complete refund from the dealer that failed to fix and only caused bigger issues.
Well done Jim, you weren't beaten and it made for some great videos. I hope you have the opportunity to test the OEM igniter with new capacitors 🍻
I watched all of the series and it was so interesting as a former technician so well done.
Big Clive on RUclips is very knowledgeable when it comes to electronics.
Failure is not an option! Well done and impressed with your willingness and skill to do the deep dive👍
I've really enjoyed this V-MAX series, well done Jim.
Enjoying the drone shots!
Bet that ride felt good after all the grief top work
Excellent, really glad to see it's sorted!
I worked offshore for years (retired now) and I was the electrical wizard for "anything" with a wire on it. Long story short a lot of the spares had been on the shelf for years and electrolytic's are "notorious" for degrading regardless of being in service or not. What I am getting to is change the lot! The caveat here is CHECK them ALL before installing as this "error" cost me my job once! Even if "brand" new check the little buggers!!!!!
Great to see another VMAX back on the road.
Just had to hit like, now I will sit back and enjoy the video.😀
Brilliant. Perseverance pays off. 👍
Nice drone shot of you riding
I've been soooooooo looking forward to this one. Literally 30 seconds in but already 'liked' it ❤
ok grabbing a beer and setting myself up to watch longly awaited
Great to see it fixed and the customer can get out in the “nice weather” 😂
It must have really pained you to not have had the opportunity to have tested out the repaired old ecu but I do get time is money.
You are a SAINT, I've learnt a lot from this one Jim cheers 🍻
Love this channel thank-you
Finally a fix, good job 💪🏻🛠
True about what you say about faulty after market parts, i’m a car mechanic in the Netherlands.
More than once we have faulty new parts; ignition coils, gasoline pump (inside tank the tank), ABS sensors, door locks ect…
Our advice is always: if not original, don’t go with the cheapest part of “unknown” brands. Rather go with Bosch,Hella,Delphi…
Hope that helps someone 🛠
I had a starter motor jam on and catch fire 3 months after fitting - Aftermarket part on the car - I know what you mean.
Yay! Congrats on the fix. I’ve really enjoyed this series and learnt so much. I am a big fan of the wafflage, if that makes sense 😂
Nice work, like the new camera work, top job mate,
Well done Jim enjoyed vmax videos my mates just bought one be warned!
Jim looks at emigrating to the South Sandwich Islands ....
Great result, still be good to see the old ecu repairs. Great video
Top job mate. 👍🏻
Well done mate 👍
Complete legend Jim
More power to your elbow. Great fix.
Excellent - really enjoyed this series of videos. I learnt a thing or two as well 😎.
Gutted that you didn't end up fixing the ignition unit at the component level :(
But at least you got it fixed. Cheers
Awesome stuff Jim, 👏 👏👏👍.
Just spent 14 months refurbing a ZX12r only to discover it wouldn’t start when hot, had only ever run her up twice a week from cold to keep the battery topped up. Stone me, only discovered some muppet had fitted an aftermarket starter where the engagement shaft was too long and was catching as well as a shit repair on one of the couplings off of the reg rec that failed when warm, got a genuine used part off of a rated breaker, fitted, key on vroom, hot or cold 😊 Needless to say the guy that had turned up to buy it at the time didn’t 😢😢😮😮😢
Well done that man, a long but no doubt rewarding fix.
As a mechanic in this modern age, you have to be an electronics wizzard now in addition to everything else. It is good to see you branching out and expanding your knowledge as we all must do to continue. I did similar repairs to expensive ABS braking modules that the relay was soldered to the circuit board. Good to see you with a good quality solder like Kester 44
I don’t think you need to be a wizzard - this guy clearly understands the principles of how electronic fuel/ignition works - so he’s able to use the correct tools to troubleshoot it.
Fantastic ! Got there in the end of course. I do like those 'engineer' tools , I have some of their crimp tools for terminals , time for a new solder sucker.
I think the original re-capped re-dioded ECU is going to be more reliable than that "new" one tbh Jim looking at that 3D printed box it's in .. 😳
Very interesting series of videos-thanks👍.
It’s a great feeling when you can bask in your own success without feeling conceited.
Well done, you explain things really well, but these videos make me glad I've got a Yamaha 660 single SZR circa 1997. Just one of everything.
Wow you really dug deep for that one. I’ve been there myself trying to fix things and the more you do the more you cry, like peeling an onion! Fantastic that you refused to give-in and impressive that you were even prepared to try to fix the dog mine ECU when you were working for free at that point and the customer already agree to shell out for a new one. That old school integrity and living your reputation is extremely hard to find these days. 👍 🏆
Well done, your videos are addictive, I had just got home from a night out with Cotswolds Biker night at Gloucester airport and started watching the Vmax story,
Needless to say, I finally went to bed after no6,
Great work,
And thanks for the videos
Brilliant ,job done.
I had a starter motor jam on and catch fire 3 months after fitting - Aftermarket part on the car - I know what you mean. 17:00 ish.
Was looking forward to the old ECU fix 😁✌️
Happy pappy ⌛ That`s a win.
Great series of videos🎉
I love these bikes. Can't wait to get mine back on the road.
I have the same solder sucker and it's magic.
Well done Jim. Shame you never got around to fixing that duff ECU but it works now.
Well done Jim, great work and fantastic series to follow. I hate VMax's, but have looked forward to each episode dropping. Customer must be chuffed to bits, bike running lovely. Great drone work
Of all the sport bikes I've owned over the last 50 yrs, the VMAX is my favorite.
Fantastic job
I have just found your channel having enjoyed watching this Vmax series. Brilliant videos thank you, and you have a new subscriber..
Well done Jim, really enjoyed this series 👍
Fantastic an earth strap while fixing the pcb may help with the longevity. I work for BT.
I would be way more confident using the old ecu with new caps if the new caps fixed it.
The old one has 40 years of proven reliability.
Not to mention the NON WATERPROOF 3D printed case. 3D prints are not waterproof even when they don't have layer separation.
That is the worst elephants foot I have seen in years. That could have easily been remedied in the model itself or the slicer software.
Makes you wonder what other corners were cut and what quality issues got through.
Circuit boards and electronics chip design are my daughters forte when she explains I end up going tilt
Was out on my v max today and
now find myself wondering how
long my 40 year old circuit board
is going to last. I might need to
look at this more closely in the
future, or i may not !!! R
I have a 40yo bike too, and for a second I thought the same😄
But immediately after I thought, nahh I am just going to ride it as much as I can😎
Very interesting!
An ESR meter is the way to go but caps that old I wouldn't even bother measuring them, straight in the bin. Would be good to see if the refurbished ecu worked? FYI 0.47uF = 470nF = 470000pF.
Good job Jim….very clever
Went through the night watching, as mechanics we refuse to be beaten.
Very often we waste our time and our money.
But thats who we are
Birra Moretti from Udine, my town....what else could bring this case to final resolution!
Guitar valve amps are similar - my 20-yo amps had to have their caps replaced!
Well done.😎
You could do a whole series fixing my R1 if you were closer😀👍
Send it to My Mate Vince... Two you tubers working together could be some good content.
I’ve got a 5 year old flashforge that could knock out prints cleaner than that,
i had a new alternator a couple of years ago he said it was a recon it came he hadn't bothered to wash the grime off before rattle caning it went strait back an that was from a shop
Having traded in my '94 V-Max on a Honda and seeing what I might have been in for in my future I am GLAD I did what I did. You scare me to death riding on your incredibly narrow roads in your country, as pretty as they are. Why they were not made wider is far beyond me. There is nothing like that in the USA
They were originally made for access to remote farms and small groups of housing before better roads were laid and probably the USA was founded - just been tarmaced over as they wear down.
The UK has a long history - the USA has around 200 years and a lot more space.
great job lad glad uve sorted it keep up the great work next video please
Well done fixing what would be a near £1800 part if you can find one!...
I would assume capacitors suck and blow atoms out all the time and get tired.
Yes, there is beer involved ❤
Wizardry congrats
Congrads, ramble on!
Did the other unit work ????????
👍👍👍😉😉 Enjoy your weekend.
..spot on..
New aftermarket parts made in the PRC...parts really crap.
Get in!
Damn, this is like the 4th/5th video I've seen.... I'd send a bike overseas for you to fix it. That's how bad it is here !! peace
Well done on getting the old girl going a question I live in Leeds do you no any mobile mechanics in the Yorkshire area cheers I have a benelli 502c needs a little work 👍
Yeah well that new ECU that you fitted with big cracks in it bad 3-D printing when it snows or rains that sort suck it go bang owner of back to square one so that’s no good is it?
this channel is awesome
Beautiful countryside. G.H
perfect
Legend
Love your content
Italian beer, Japanese motorcycles, all while soldering through a microscope in the middle of the night! Definitely not a 9 to 5 job.
Foook me, I thought we have really shit roads but the amount of potholes on your main roads😂😂😂😂
Do you recommend that multimeter for a casual user doing odd vehicle jobs?
Hi Jim, i have a gy6 125 cc scooter misfire on mid revving, and I have 90 psi compression, is it game over?
Can you please make a T-shirt
With
Waffling 😂
A snap on "PRO" meter doesn't have a basic capacitance function ? I wouldn't call that pro at all. I have some beater $5 meters and they all have cap function.
Typical overpriced snap off marketing.
Probably a $2,000 add on for capacitance.
🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻!!!
