Local mobile mechanic replaced DPF, it blocked again so old owner took it to the main dealer who said the turbo was dead and the head needed a lot of work. Truly the sign of a professional and someone who is customer focused. Thanks for sharing the video. Once again, Dan not only diagnosed it but also provided important educational advice. I'm surprised there wasn't a boost pressure code. My bet is that issue was there before the previous dpf failed and forced regens with too much soot in the old dpf cracked it. Cleaning is always better than forcing a regen when the pressure is too high! Sometimes people reset the learned soot values to make the vehicle regen when in reality it shouldn't be doing.
Drivability parameters should have been checked before and after DPF replacement. Why is this engine running inefficiently? It should have been addressed before sending it down the road
Came here to say this. There was one as he stated because he disconnected the maf, I wonder if it was missed while focusing on the dpf pressure and cleaning procedure.
Had exactly the same part of the hose crack on my Outlander. Didn't get as far as having a blocked DPF because it started to go in limp home mode every time I gave it full throttle. Glad I got mine sorted early on as I know just how expensive a DPF is! Nice one Dan.
a very useful tool for turbo engines is the smoke machine. so many dpf issues are due to cracked hoses, leaking injector seals at the rocker cover, etc. we got one recently after watching @Orileysautos videos, and it has really saved us hours of leak testing.
If you use a smoke machine on turbo systems make sure you use one that can generate enough pressure. Some turbo hoses only start leaking when boost pressure is applied

Great to have you back again Dan! Very interesting, as always, to see the fault finding process and to have the relevance of each step so clearly explained. Look after yourself.
As an aviation mechanic , it was very refreshing to see an auto technician use a logical approach to diagnosing the cause of a problem and not just the symptoms. I do have a question for you though. Why did you not look for TSB's on the symptoms before you started all the troubleshooting? It seems that checking for the TSB first could have helped you reach the solution faster.
You still need to diagnose the cause. Proper diagnostic procedures is the most important step for a successful repair and should always be your first step of the repair procedure. Cars are not like airplanes. Every system in a modern car is computer controlled
@@deerhunter8533 I wasn't suggesting that you shouldn't have done all the other steps to verify that the problem the TSB indicated as the most likely root cause was indeed correct. Especially the cleaning of the DPF system and verifying the pressure sensor was operating within parameters. I was just curious about the order in which you did them. Cars are more like modern aircraft than you realize. For instance the F-22 Raptor can tell the mechanic that there is high iron and nickel content in the engine oil which is a precursor to bearing failure. Not to mention the various other sensors for coolant levels, fuel , hydraulic oil levels, etc..even the length of time a relay takes to activate all are monitored by multiple redundant computer systems.
In my day to day work checking for tsb's would be the first step of my diagnosis. But for RUclips i like to show as much as possible of the diagnostic process. In this video i did a little of both.

One of the most common causes I've found of dpf high frequency regeneration is the intake pipe leak.... experience has came to find usually the pipes split when the dpf gets blocked to the point the car struggles to start or doesn't and the back pressure and intake pressure meet and blow out. Often tend to find the dpfs block up due to oil leaking from the turbos, which is typically caused by poor and infrequent oil changes is usually the biggest cause of them blocking up..... always great to have ddtsb though dan.... like in terms of precisely.... What a difference in service compared to Australian dealership. My Mitsubishi Triton MQ 2015 2.4L 4N15 my RPM is dropping b 625rpm every time I come to a stop and then quickly comes up to normal rpm 650. Same when idling with AC on, AC clicks in rpm goes up, AC clicks again rpm drops to 625 an then quickly goes up to 650. I have no trouble codes, tested all seniors all good. I bought a smoke machine to test for vacuum leaks and found that the EGR has a leak at the hole used for atmospheric pressure to allow the diaphragm to go up and down. Tested the EGR with vacuum tool and it does hold pressure but has a leak when test from the intake. Purchased new EGR, and had the same leak, ordered another and the same leak. So bit the bullet and booked it with the dealer$hit and I told them what needed to be fixed and that the car has no trouble codes, they said diagnostics are done on a Thursday. Went to the dealership and sat there for half a day but they only looked at car for 15 minutes. Result was it has no trouble codes but we updated the computer, that will be $200 thanks, paid the bill got into the car only to find the same problem. When back in and told them it's still doing the same thing, they said maybe it could be the EGR or valve adjustment, the quote was $1850. Not paying $1850 for a maybe. Can anybody confirm if the EGR leak is normal as I can't get a confirmation from any dealer and the internet has mixed reviews. My EGR has vacuum operation and electronic built into the same unit. If you get stuck out on the road, you’re kind of like upper creek without a paddle going nowhere thank you again Dan.
Almost 99% of dpf problems on vehicles are either caused but turbo issues or boost pipes being burst. See this kinda fault a lot on Mercedes with the 651 engine.Either than that it’s always cars that are city driven and can’t regenerate . Great content as always Sir.
@@mosestaukobong5937 that's not my experience we see many different causes for dpf issues. It can be; behavior of the customer (short trips) an engine that uses oil, injector issues, egr issues, temperature sensors failing, AdBlue injectors stuck open, turbo issues, mass airflow sensors, failing pressure differential sensors, and i could keep on going.
I had one of these as a roadside breakdown. Found the split hose and used Amalgamation tape as a temporary repair. Dan, I think viewers might miss what you say about a cracked dpf. It's a internal crack not a crack like a fractured weld etc letting exhaust gasses out the side of it. Wonder if the hose caused the original dpf to crack??
Hose cracked because of deterioration of the rubber material, oil does that to rubber. DPF can crack because of age, temperature or low quality material
@@deuce9769no, DPF cracking is a result of excessive soot load during regeneration - i.e. someone reset the soot loading when the DPF light came on, then continued driving until the vehicle finally managed to do a regeneration - at which point the DPF was already overloaded. This causes excessive temperatures inside the DPF (can easily exceed 1300⁰C instead of the normal

Thanks
I wish more people would perform the same thought process as your do.
Great troubleshooting, Dan!
Thank you for understanding dpfs. There are so many mechanics that just don't understand how a dpf works and it drives me nuts. "Dpf clogged? Yeah just replace it" ahhhhhhhh
Hi Diagnose Dan, trust you are super well... love watching your videos.. I have an issue with my car - VW Tiguan 2020 TSI. I have checked with numerous VW dealers and other Mechanics and still no one can find an issue. In the morning on cold start when turning left at a stop has a noise that sounds like metal that is loose / dragging. As I said you here this when the car is at a stop then taking a left. I have not heard anything when the car is turning right. The noise is more prominent when turning left up a hill. Shocks, struts, bearings, links and sway bars have been checked. Nobody can find any issue. This is only heard in the early mornings on cold start...
I had that happen on my Scion, check the metal shield behind the rotor, it was slightly touching it, just push it back a little bit
Excellent job , and very good described 😉👌🏻.... Owns a Volvo V60 T6 R AWD, 326 hp from 2020 , my ever best car in my opinion.... Love it ❤❤
But as an old retired mechanic myself it was an excellent video of good diagnose and repair. Thx and keep up the good work 💪💪👏👏
I like your test drive area. Very nice!
That's great you had that bulletin. It helped show the damaged hose. (Not Enough Air)
I started to think blocked air filter or air inlet, but without a Mass Airflow Sensor reading, it makes the diagnosis more difficult.
Great video! Hope the customer was happy. Also if this is a "pattern problem," I hope the OEM has an updated fix.
Thanks for watching!
Be safe Dan, make sure your shop has STRONG ventilation system to push out these bad airs. Just want to make sure you are healthy so you can continue teaching us 👍
Thanks!
Fantastic work Dan, Always a pleasure watching
Thanks!
I thank you for knowledge Diagnosedan
And thank you for watching!
Thanks Dan !
Tremendous lesson !!
Tremendous coaching !!!
Thanks mate .
👊🏼 🔥 💻 📈 🎲
You are a real repairman!! Greetings from Sweden.
Thank you!
Not heard from you for a while. Always like the way you methodically go through the issues. Sorted and done yet again.😄👍
Thanks for watching!!
Another classroom from professor Dan , thank you for that 👍👍👍👍
Great video! Thank you! I'm so surprised this didn't throw an under boost code.
Nice work, You should have put those Paddle shifters on that Diesel to the test! Agree more videos and bloopers needed.
😁👍
😊😊😊😊 thank you very much for another wonderful video. Thank you very much for your time and effort for putting it all together 10 out of 10. The diesel market in the diesel community is finally catching up with all of the extra cats and everything else that are put on all the cars and the trucks and everything else and now all the little problems are now finally showing their ugly little heads and all the codes to come with it and everything goes in limp mode. If you get stuck out on the road, you’re kind of like upper creek without a paddle going nowhere thank you again Dan.
Thank you for your fantastic comment!
Another great study and example of your diagnostic process and confirmation of issues.
Thank you
Almost 99% of dpf problems on vehicles are either caused but turbo issues or boost pipes being burst.
You have so smooth roads there. Better roads in the industrial area compared to Finland main highways :D
Ps. Great work once again!
We also pay alot of tax for it😂
Excellent diagnosis again,
Doctor Dan !
😅🎉
😁👍
Another good video, but that cracked screen would be a fail here in the UK.
Thanks! I agree. Always perform a Root Cause Analysis.
Thanks for watching!!
Car is never an unsolved problem !! Customers attitude is!! Thanks Dan
Its a pleasure!
Brilliant analogy and diagnosis once again Dan, I’m amazed by what you have to have (sorry) too many haves and have nots😊, the amount of diagnostic tools in a modern day workshop, must be super expensive running a modern workshop, love your presentation as well Dan, next time I’m over in the Netherlands I’ll let you buy me a beer 😊, sorry again, I’ll buy you a beer 🍺, thoroughly enjoyed your post Dan
I’m glad you brought up the all cars are made the same and if one part fails it will fail on every other car made people don’t usually understand that one.
My eyes are drawn to what looks like a weird S-shaped windscreen crack.
Never seen that kind of an damage in windscreen and I've had quite many got cracked.
It could be three separate cracks that just happen to look continuous. Your brain is filling in the parts that aren't cracked as also cracked.
His car has other faults he dosent want fixing , his front windscreen is cracked 😂😂, droving it with that faulty , obviously dosent want to spend his hard earned cash as they say 😂😂😂, hope you charged him and he watches this video to show how honest you are Dan , many would have charged for a smoke test
@@mikeberry304with a car that expensive i expect him to have glass damage covered by the insurrance.
Here in NSW, Australia, that windscreen crack/s would instantly fail a registration inspection, especially as it's right in front of the driver!
The tools Dan has are so good.
And so expensive i bet too.
Hi, Dan. Nice to see you again, buddy. Great diagnosis…as usual! 👏👏👏
Thank you!!
O'Riley's Autos the DPF King uses Launch DPF cleaner, I mention it because it is a single shot application and always seems to work.
Someone mentioned smoke testing. I agree. Mitsubishi Outla Der diesel. Is the diesel better or worse than the gas model. Any Mitsubishi technicians out there? Diagnose Dan is one of the best, if not the best diagnostic technicians on RUclips.
Thank you so much Dan for this very informative Video.
Thanks Dan to encourage us mechanics to dig deeper in finding the cause of a problem on the car for a permanent fix or repair.
I love the Video thank for teaching us Dan !
Greetings to your entire family Dan 😀
Loving your bloopers. In case you're wondering. Is one of the highlights. The other highlight, is how we get there!
Diagnosis means = split or unknown
Thank God we have DiagnoseDan
Thanks for watching
Nice fix Dan! Thanks for sharing. Have a good one, cheers Nico.
Thanks as always Nico
The customer is always right *in matters of taste. That* is the quote.
Very nice, Dan! I'm so glad you explained at the end why customer didn't have drivability problems before replacing the DPF. Brilliant! Another great job, Dan. Best wishes from Florida. (Yes it's too darn hot!)S
So if the DPF was cracked and the turbo hose was split, wouldn’t you have seen black smoke coming out of the tail pipe?
To hot for me🤣 but Florida men are build with internal ac systems🤣
Great work Dan. We love you so much.
Thank you thats really appreciated
Damn, I am so jealous of the tools you have. Keep up the good work.
It's been a while. Sure glad to see you back!
Thanks!
Great work Dan, dont forget the forced regen
Congratulations for the diagnostics
😁👍
Keep up the good work.
Its a Mitsubishi, they never have any power, even when running well lol!
well well, Dan is using my brand new scanner - im still learning my way around in there - Topdon Pheonix Max
@@jimmypeters-j9s its a great scantool!
