Zach your emotion is getting in the way. The Ohio State defense struggled yes in the explosive plays. But they also got a goal line stop on 4th down to “get off the field” in the second half. The also held Oregon to 3 points giving Ohio State a chance to drive the field and get the win. Which with one more second on the clock they do. I get it the other team top 5 or not shouldn’t be successful in any way but the other team have a say in the games too. Oregon does not have bad offensive players. They’re good. They played very well. This game was not the same as the rivalry games in 2021 and 2022. Ohio State got boat raced. Ohio State has lost to the last two national title winners by a combined 7 points. This team isn’t falling apart it’s tweaking the little things and surging at the right time in games. This is a crazy good team. It took a 5 hour flight the day before, two offensive lineman injuries, a trick inside kick, multiple 4th down conversations, a rule loophole and let’s face it a really questionable ending due to how much time should have been left on the clock to lose by 1 point to the then 3rd now 1st team in the country. This team just needed reminded they can still lose. I think they still get the job done.

It may sound trivial but Zach is right, you can’t have your teammate getting spit on without any repercussions. I’m not talking getting 15 yard penalties, but the cockiness and chippy-ness needed to increase.
Saw the same thing against Michigan in 2021. Cam Brown took on the entire Michigan team and not a single Buckeye backed him up. The team doesn’t lack for talent, but it 100% lacks dawgs that want to destroy someone every play.

I didn’t particularly like when Urban used to kick the ball short, but maybe he just wanted his superior athletes to kick someone’s a** to show who you are. I'm happy with Will Howard overall. His running threat is a crucial piece that had been missing from our offense for a few years. In the college game, you are handicapping yourself to a degree with a pure pocket passer.
That said, I don't understand all the talk acting like he has put in some sort of undeniable heisman-like performance. If you compare his passing stats with McCord's through 6 games last year, they are very similar-
    Through 6 games @ OSU-
McCord (58 pass attempts entering season):
    109/170 = 64.1%
    1651 yds
    11 TD / 1 INT
Howard (779 pass attempts entering season):
    121/165 = 73.3%
    1574 yds
    14TD / 3 INT
77 Rushing yds, 5 TD (This is the key that likely makes Will a slightly better College QB)
The unfortunate tradeoff is that we have lost the deep ball threat. We are running the ball much better this year with two of the best backs in the country and a mobile QB (from 77th in rush yards/game last year to 15th) which should in theory open up more favorable matchups and space down field. I worry a bit about Will's ability to stretch the defense if we find ourselves in a shootout.
Then we get to the turnovers... Kyle threw 6 INTs last year but just about every one of them made you question if he had closed his eyes while delivering. As we all know, crucially, 2 of those were against Michigan. Through six games though, he had thrown just one INT in 170 pass attempts.
I think that the turnovers/decision making were Kyle's biggest drawbacks at OSU. Will is in his 5th season playing QB in college football and I see the very same 2-3 throws a game that make you say "WTF"? Ultimately, it hasn't cost the Buckeyes anything so far. Just Like Kyle's mistakes weren't consequential... until they were.
Not asking for Kyle back, not saying Day made a mistake bringing in Will. I just think it is interesting discussion and IMO, 6 games in, you can't really draw a conclusion one way or the other.
I believe that both McCord and Howard were/are good enough to lead us to a title. It is the defense that has let us down in the biggest games.

Because they're speaking nonsense. Zach can't remember literally one game ago where we had multiple strip sacks and explosive plays on defense. He says the VT game doesn't count because the coaches had no answer for the bear front, WHICH IS A FAILURE OF COACHING, but Day, Larry, Knowles are shit coaches because they lost by 1 to Oregon. Mike talking nonsense about the 2013 team looking ahead to Bama (who already lost btw) being the reason why the lost to Sparty and it definitely wasn't because Braxton (who he claims is a better passer than Howard) was inaccurate as shit and the defense was awful against the pass and run. If someone watched this show they'd assume Ohio State lost 59-0 to Oregon.

@@bucksncat1997, it's not because they lost Oregon by 1 point. That's the excuse making that keeps mediocrity and delusion alive. Zach is frustrated because before Oregon, there was Mizzou and Michigan and Georgia and Michigan and Michigan again and Oregon again. Zach is right. I mean but if you're good with underachieving, being delusional and basking in mediocrity celebrating wins over Penn State and the rest of the big 10 teams without OSU talent level, then cool...as you were. Zach Boren is 100%…SPOT ON. So, is Mike Bennett. Zach’s point comes down to coaching….and Bennett’s is due to the culture today. These kids are getting wealthy playing college football, so what is there to be “hungry” for. What keeps them motivated to win at this point? Will Howard has played very well, but his mistakes were HORRIBLE mistakes, and made at the worst moments. But, I digress… By the time TCUN rolls around, all the people writing off the Oregon loss as “no big deal”, are going to be REAL NERVOUS, knowing just how poorly coached, and fragile this team is. They’ll realize that this team, while loaded with talent, is still coached by the most underperforming coach in college football history. And, to Zach’s point, all the issues that cost us the Oregon game, were glaring in all the games leading up to Oregon game, and were never fixed, because of the false sense of confidence this team (and its coaches get) beating sh!t teams. I can’t wait to see how these delusional Buckeyes fans (including Buckeye Scoop) respond with our next loss(s). This team has at LEAST one more loss prior to UM, possibly two given that Nebraska, Indiana, Penn St., and TCUN all have the ability to beat this team (as it stands now).

Wish we could go back to 2017 so Mike & Zach could be happy. The team will be angry & play with a chip on their shoulder only to get this shit kicked out of them by Oklahoma & Iowa. Or we could go to 2016 when JT’s inability to throw the ball more than 15 yards caused the offense to be completely anemic in every game. Or we can go to 2013 where Braxton’s inability to hit the broadside of a barn against Michigan State meant they could just sell out on the run game.

    • @Heeezy33
      @Heeezy33 13 часов назад

I used to think like you, but ultimately it comes down to higher highs and lower lows vs. consistently being close but not quite there. In the words of Herm, you play to win. I support and appreciate Ryan Day, but we have not won any hardware the past three seasons. We have also consistently been let down by the team when the lights are the brightest. Doug says that your team consistently being "in the mix" is the best case scenario for a sports fan. While partially true, I'd prefer to see my team get over the top every now and then even if it means some bad losses here and there.

So your options are a team being in the mix but not winning the biggest games but winning everything else. Or not winning the biggest games (some of them being blowouts) and getting embarrassed by mediocre teams. Here is how far Texas moved the ball on each of their scoring drives: 55 yards, 9 yards.

      175 passing yards
      108 rushing yards
      283 total offense
      Texas:
      230 passing yards
      29 rushing yards
      259 total offense
Tell me more about how top 5 matchups are inherently skewed to be a shootout. Do you want to know how Georgia managed to dominate Texas while only outgunning them by 24 yards? Their defense played at an elite level, took the ball away from Texas, and set up their offense with short fields.
I'm not a doomer and am still very optimistic about the season, but something is very wrong with our defense.
Oregon, Missouri, Michigan '23, Penn State '23, Notre Dame '23, Georgia '22, Michigan '22, Notre Dame '22.
We forced exactly ONE turnover in those 6 games (Stetson Bennet threw a ball into Steele Chambers belly)
Penn State in '22 is the last time we forced multiple turnovers in a "big game" and the 4 forced turnovers were the reason we won that game. There is also an argument to be had whether or not Penn State is on the same level as those other matchups.
One turnover in 6 of the biggest games over the past three seasons. That is not Ohio State defense and that is not how you win a title.
