Zach your emotion is getting in the way. The Ohio State defense struggled yes in the explosive plays. But they also got a goal line stop on 4th down to “get off the field” in the second half. The also held Oregon to 3 points giving Ohio State a chance to drive the field and get the win. Which with one more second on the clock they do. I get it the other team top 5 or not shouldn’t be successful in any way but the other team have a say in the games too. Oregon does not have bad offensive players. They’re good. They played very well. This game was not the same as the rivalry games in 2021 and 2022. Ohio State got boat raced. Ohio State has lost to the last two national title winners by a combined 7 points. This team isn’t falling apart it’s tweaking the little things and surging at the right time in games. This is a crazy good team. It took a 5 hour flight the day before, two offensive lineman injuries, a trick inside kick, multiple 4th down conversations, a rule loophole and let’s face it a really questionable ending due to how much time should have been left on the clock to lose by 1 point to the then 3rd now 1st team in the country. This team just needed reminded they can still lose. I think they still get the job done.
It may sound trivial but Zach is right, you can’t have your teammate getting spit on without any repercussions. I’m not talking getting 15 yard penalties, but the cockiness and chippy-ness needed to increase. Saw the same thing against Michigan in 2021. Cam Brown took on the entire Michigan team and not a single Buckeye backed him up. The team doesn’t lack for talent, but it 100% lacks dawgs that want to destroy someone every play.
Mike Bennett is making very good points. The mental component to these players seem to be missing… it just don’t seem like the players are aggressive or play with violence
Im with Zach Boren on this one. Im not gonna be an optimist until I see change. Specifically with how we come out at big games. I'm happy with Will Howard overall. His running threat is a crucial piece that had been missing from our offense for a few years. In the college game, you are handicapping yourself to a degree with a pure pocket passer. That said, I don't understand all the talk acting like he has put in some sort of undeniable heisman-like performance. If you compare his passing stats with McCord's through 6 games last year, they are very similar- Through 6 games @ OSU- McCord (58 pass attempts entering season): 109/170 = 64.1% 1651 yds 11 TD / 1 INT Howard (779 pass attempts entering season): 121/165 = 73.3% 1574 yds 14TD / 3 INT 77 Rushing yds, 5 TD (This is the key that likely makes Will a slightly better College QB) The unfortunate tradeoff is that we have lost the deep ball threat. We are running the ball much better this year with two of the best backs in the country and a mobile QB (from 77th in rush yards/game last year to 15th) which should in theory open up more favorable matchups and space down field. I worry a bit about Will's ability to stretch the defense if we find ourselves in a shootout. Then we get to the turnovers... Kyle threw 6 INTs last year but just about every one of them made you question if he had closed his eyes while delivering. As we all know, crucially, 2 of those were against Michigan. Through six games though, he had thrown just one INT in 170 pass attempts. I think that the turnovers/decision making were Kyle's biggest drawbacks at OSU. Will is in his 5th season playing QB in college football and I see the very same 2-3 throws a game that make you say "WTF"? Ultimately, it hasn't cost the Buckeyes anything so far. Just Like Kyle's mistakes weren't consequential... until they were. Not asking for Kyle back, not saying Day made a mistake bringing in Will. I just think it is interesting discussion and IMO, 6 games in, you can't really draw a conclusion one way or the other. I believe that both McCord and Howard were/are good enough to lead us to a title. It is the defense that has let us down in the biggest games.
