I was actually really surprised at how smooth he is on tarmac in a GT car; it's a VERY different skill set than flinging a 4WD rally car through mud. Proof that Mcrae was just a legendary driver, period :)
He was and still is a Legend! Dominated in Rallysport, testdrive in Formula1 and drive at 24LeMans, such a talented Driver and very sympathic man, he was always smiling. Rest in Peace, we will never forget you and always miss you:'(
Looking at the Racecar Engineering and ACO's speed traps from last year's GT1 cars during wednesday and thursday practices, they varied from 195.65 mph / 314.87 km/h to 184.9 mph / 297.57 km/h
@JurgenGDB: I too would like to see the 599 in the GT1 World Championship as I think it is a great looking car and would provide plenty of competition too. As for Le mans the ACO have pretty abolished the GT1 class due to the lack of entrants and the clashes in dates with the GT1 World Championship. But it was an awesome car at Le Mans driven by a fantastic driver
this car was incredible and as low-slung a GT machine as ever raced - I could not believe how fast Colin was going on the way down to Porsche curves - lets bring back cars like these for NA and ACO use, where Panoz kept that unity afloat for 15 years out of pocket - a waste for it to be lost with some NA-only invention The most important character required of a racecar: its sound. the true revelartion of the form regardless of appearance. Every great racecar sounded evil up close-
I shed a tear watching this! Mc Rae was so underated, i mean come on he just didn't give a sh!t about anything, he had that type of personality where he would succeed that was just perfect for WRC or plain and simple, RACING!!!
@gtsgtsgt well, the Nordschleife has its own racing series that solely runs on that track, with 200+ teams, a dozen or more factory backed. Search for " VLN "
Love that car.. probably my favorite GT1 car of all. All though I really do love the whine of the Aston Martin's V12... and that one Japanese Lambo team really needs some good drivers. crap I think that is the only real lambo racing, goes to show you why Ferrari is a racing icon.
To slow the cars down; a large majority of the drivers who raced there complained that the straight was too fast, especially for a regularly surfaced road.
The actual straight part of the Mulsanne (after the end of Tertre Rouge and before the kink) can't be that much longer than Fuji's or Catalyuna's longest straights, and normal everyday cars, with suspensions far from being as good as a racecar's, run on it every day year round. With the amount of downforce and how smooth modern day roads are, I think it'd be a good idea to just go with one chicane in the middle or, even better, no chicanes. We all miss Colin, though.
lol, yea. Why don't they get one of the newer ones in there (besides the F430)... One of the models after the 575 Maranello (can't remember the name of it)
You probably know this by now as you posted your message 9 months ago. It was a helicopter crash near his home that claim the life of him, his son, and a family friend.
I would give amillion to try that just once! Actually I don´t have a million - so that seems to be the problem :-) The playstation games and kart driving just doesn´t cut it anymore.
Really? Ah, I didn't know that, I know drivers had stated that they thought it was dangerous, but I should have realised that it would be an FIA decision to change it rather than a drivers one. The straight is just over 6km long, so I guess the two chicanes would break it down to just around 2km a section. I know they thought the road surface and high speeds had contributed to the Mercedes CLR's flipping in '99 (even though the second flip was on a "slow" lap).
I cant wait until Ferrari unleashes its 599 GTO at Le Mans. Hell maybe the 599 will enter into FIA GT1 in 2011. Ferrari has to get back into GT1, Also the GT2 458 Scuderia is looking bad ass!
@gtsgtsgt At a few Corners you can pass the Opponent ;) When you think this, its your choice (= What on the Mulsanne Circuit make its more interessting in contrast to the Nordschleife? (PS: not everything in motorsport turns around driving fast and overtake)
@freedomsoldier187 yeah i agree, rally drivers have got skills on about every surface, but if you can win in F-1 (for example Raikkonen) or something like that (hotlaping+asphalt+TCS) then you can't be good at rally or even get into.
@gtsgtsgt Nascar is more then boring. The American have no Idea of Motorsport (only a few exceptions) I'm no American, but i think Circuit de la Sarte is boring to drive, i prefer the Nürburgring Nordschleife (=
No, what happens is that you are the one who does not know a bit about motorsport, you don't know how to appreciate different disciplines or different tracks, disgusting to have people like you in motorsport 🤮

i'm glad colin got a chance to do this ,everyone says how good he was in the 550 at le mans.i so miss this guy.
The C5R's engine is rock and roll, this V12 is a symphony!
You bet they surely are...Too bad they can't run anymore
I didn't know Colin drove Le Mans! Cool! R.I.P Mr. McRae.
RIP Colin McRae, you were one of the best race drivers we were blessed with watching... Glad you were in one of the best sports cars ever built!
Looking at the Racecar Engineering and ACO's speed traps from last year's GT1 cars during wednesday and thursday practices, they varied from 195.65 mph / 314.87 km/h to 184.9 mph / 297.57 km/h
Best sound ever. Ferrari V12 being driven by one of the true greats. We miss you Colin.
RIP Colin, you will be missed.
What a hero, he'll be sadly missed.
Could watch that all day.
Excellent driving. What smooth looks like going fast.
Great lap from an amazing driver R.I.P. Colin McRae.
RIP a really down to earth good guy. The world misses you colin :(
I Love this clearest sound of V12
Fantastic video. Thanks

the man can do everything!
RIP Colin
Magnifique 550 prodrive
Fantastic sound
you cant BEAT the sound of a perfectly driven V-12. like a symphony. envious.
Give credit to speed TV, NO techno music, no commentary. Let the engine do all the work. Brilliant.
listen to this with the one of the corvette C5-R together and it makes something so sweet I cant describe it in words
He was more than a little handy on a bike too! Saw him with Kevin Schwantz at the GSXR day at Brands in 2001.
Very smooth driving and I want that gearbox!
awesome V12 sound
Amazing. The driver and car. I love it. RIP

What is the purpose of the stick on the hood?
this came from his practice or qualifying...I'm not sure which, I purely remember this video clip on Speedchannel the weekend of that LeMans.
Colin was fast in anything. He will be missed by everyone who knew him :(
"Sounds of Speed" FTW!
550 Maranello, best Ferrari !!!
I shed a tear watching this! Mc Rae was so underated, i mean come on he just didn't give a sh!t about anything, he had that type of personality where he would succeed that was just perfect for WRC or plain and simple, RACING!!!
If my Italian bicycle could make an engine sound, that's what it would sound like.
I'd say the most talented driver that ever lived! did you ever see michael schumacher attempt rally driving? Mcrae touched every form of racing!
great vid =D
in this same year, gran turismo 4 was released and le mans is in the game .. the track was very similar to the real track =)
we miss ya Colin
@knutfheifer I heard it was a learjet and he tried to thrust upwards just around his back garden but it stalled when the rotors hit a tree? yes?
excelent video
Nope, it's a Prodrive-prepared Ferrari 550 Maranello. The DBR9 was introduced the year after this video.
No puedo creer que esté muerto...
I can't believe he's dead...
R.I.P.
Rest in peace Colin...
2004. That's when the Corvette C5 R was their main competitor. Just can't remember if '04 was the year they beat them or if that was 2003
@gtsgtsgt well, the Nordschleife has its own racing series that solely runs on that track, with 200+ teams, a dozen or more factory backed. Search for " VLN "
What is the purpose of the stick on the hood?
Wow..anybody knows what was the top speed in the straight?
@mystiqueman366 is that why Michael was doing superbike racing last year?
it was '03. I remember watching that race.
Not ‘04?
im not a fan of ferrari but this v12 sound is the best of all v12 fia GTs have raced and race
RIP Colin McRae...
Man i miss Colin. But i never knew he raced in lemans...
makes me wonder how amazing colin wold do if he went seriously into GT racing
@Lyricoholic They're not here now but during the race, there's a bunch of other cars you have to watch out for.
I think the chicanes give the cars that aren't too fast on the straights a change to prove themselves in the corners.
Ferrari V12, what a noise.
R.I.P COLIN
599 GTB Fiorano or 612 Scaglietti?
I'd prefer the the 599 as a future GT racer.
RIP colin and his son
Love that car.. probably my favorite GT1 car of all. All though I really do love the whine of the Aston Martin's V12... and that one Japanese Lambo team really needs some good drivers. crap I think that is the only real lambo racing, goes to show you why Ferrari is a racing icon.
COLIN R.I.P
grande pilota.

OfficialNonsense the beginning of Mulsanne is way longer than the straight at Catalunya. And is longer than Fuji's front straight.
lol, yea. Why don't they get one of the newer ones in there (besides the F430)... One of the models after the 575 Maranello (can't remember the name of it)
@tmat56 RALLYING means offroad. i meant to say that michael never raced off the track..
You probably know this by now as you posted your message 9 months ago. It was a helicopter crash near his home that claim the life of him, his son, and a family friend.
GOOD,GOOD,GOOD.
R.I.P Colin Mcrae
@knutfheifer he crashed his helicopter not a learjet
MUSIIIIIIIIIC!!!
Uhh no.
It's an actual onboard lap with Colin McRae's Prodrive 550 GTS at Le Mans 2004.
I would give amillion to try that just once! Actually I don´t have a million - so that seems to be the problem :-)
The playstation games and kart driving just doesn´t cut it anymore.
probably around 330 km/h
Yea, the 599 that's the one I was thinking of...
Really? Ah, I didn't know that, I know drivers had stated that they thought it was dangerous, but I should have realised that it would be an FIA decision to change it rather than a drivers one.

seriously for a rally driver mcrae really can drive a car ;p i mean he looks even faster then the guys who normally drive this type of cars
@gtsgtsgt
At a few Corners you can pass the Opponent ;)
When you think this, its your choice (=
What on the Mulsanne Circuit make its more interessting in contrast to the Nordschleife?
(PS: not everything in motorsport turns around driving fast and overtake)
Well, the SECTION after the Dunlop Bridge was destroyed. Goddamn Bugatti Circuit.
From all this to crashing a leerjet in his back garden rip colin you will be missed
just safety
and i just wanted to be specific :)
@Lyricoholic Too much mickey mouse tilkedromes?
sounds just like the dbr9 but more muffled
i v12 ferrari sono i più belli in assoluto....
That might be cool, a 599 GT1 race car...
how about no?
@freedomsoldier187 proof that if you are Colin McRae you can win racing anything!
i bet that would have been heeps boring compared to barrling past trees at 100mph! still it be great fun
👀
@freedomsoldier187 yeah i agree, rally drivers have got skills on about every surface, but if you can win in F-1 (for example Raikkonen) or something like that (hotlaping+asphalt+TCS) then you can't be good at rally or even get into.
1990
Helicopter crash.
what a boring circuit
but a great driving (=
colin the best
@gtsgtsgt
Nascar is more then boring. The American have no Idea of Motorsport (only a few exceptions)

watch rallying
start last and finish first (=
not to good in a heli tho... j/k colin was great
too soon man, too soon. that's bad taste.
