yes, He slit his own throat. He’s in the bunk, turns. There’s no one else there to do it. BUT... a life enters the world through a knife wound/slice, a life leaves the world through a knife wound/slice. A controversial thesis is that George is the father. I support this reading. It both heightens the irony, and explains many details. Dr Adam’s is there BC George came to get him. George is handing out celebratory cigars. The woman bites GEORGE. George seems to resent his brother’s “greatness” in this situation. George stays at the Indian camp when they leave. Adding to whatever other things the Indian “couldn’t stand”, is the fact that the child might not be his.
Papa's back! This makes me so happy. That one was so short, but so much was still going on. Hemingway has a way of making hard things comfortable to read about. It was interesting to get into this from Three-Days Blow, though.
Generally the father hands out cigars. Sounds like we have the answer. She bit him for putting this fate on her. Her husband killed him self from the shame.
Already plot-wise this story sounds extremely appealing to me. Your review reminded me of something they said at this event in Italy they did about Hemingway this year: You can open up any text written by Hemingway, pick a random line and it is certain that this line will move you in some ways.
Actually, I'm quite confused about the Indian man who was dead. Did he kill him himself? if it's true, why he did that? or did someone kill him? who did? . . 🙏🤔
Actually he was mentally shocked by seeing his wife's trouble. He cut his feet three days before, he could not do anything for her. It is obvious that there is a great impact of racism. Dr. and George did not behave in a soothing manner. Dr. said that he do not consider her pain, it is not important for him. At this time her husband turned his face towards the wall. Dr. completed the operation with jackknife without anesthesia. The story always present George taking a bit more care to a strange woman and her people. George crossed the lake fast, he shared cigarettes to Indians, Dr. ordered him to remove her quilt and at last he stayed there even after the delivery. So, George is the 'father' of her baby. All these things led the man to kill himself. It is a story that describe the mental and physical tortures that faced by Indian American migrants. (reference : Cliff notes)
@@StrippedCoverLitMedia Omg man, so sorry for the randomness! I was studying for my North American literature final and this brazilian meme kept popping up on my mind. Translation: today's topic girls, what a hot nerd! omg what a hot nerd guys, I faint when I see a hot guy. Thanks for the amazing video, it helped me a lot. Love from Brasil. Also sorry!!!
I played along this time and read the story for the first time before viewing your video. Your video cleared up a few things for me (e.g. I hadn't considered the cigars at all.) I made a different assumption about the smell in the room, however. First we get the fact about the man cutting his foot four days earlier, then we're told the room smells very bad. So the man has gangrene, right? I first thought the doctor might have cut off his foot during the elided section where Nick didn't want to watch what he was doing, but I think that's wrong now - I guess he might just have been removing the placenta. Poor Nick - he sure got a hell of a lot of bad things to associate childbirth with.
Enjoyed this review. Considering women in Hemingway stories, I would enjoy watching the two of you discuss Margaret in The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber. Someday maybe?
The way I understood the suicide in this story is that the man had gangrene, hence why the room smelled. But he was holding on for the birth of his child. After the child was born he would have had his peace and committed suicide.

thank you for sharing your great videos and this one is really helpful .
Well thanks. Good to have you around.
Maybe the child is Uncle George's child. George is celebrating. The Indian father can see the child is not his.

Have you guys done a review of Hemingway's Cat In The Rain? I love that piece.

Please answer me 🛑🛑🛑🛑 Describe the nature of Nick's "initiation" and explain what impact this experience seems to have on him ?

Or, George handed out cigar to celebrate his new born kid, and the Indian 'father' comitted suicide. - "..these little afairs.." ;-)
