- How to fix exhaust leak cheap using exhaust tape and exhaust pipe sealant. In this video I show you the steps to a successful exhaust repair that can be done for just a few dollars.
The vehicle used is a Lexus, but all vehicles will be very similar and as long as the holes are small and the pipe is not broken you can use this technique to save time and money by fixing your exhaust yourself.

Bought that tape stuff and didn’t realize plastic was on both sides so I took one side off and was wondering why I was smelling burning plastic 🤣🤣

Two notes. One, the goop stuff, which is an exhaust cement, should be of consistent colour (it's just high temp glue with fibres). Sometimes these types of blue are made of 2 ingredients in one tube (separate bonder and hardening agent) and then you need to knit them thoroughly before using but it should be clearly marked on the tube and in the instructions... So I believe the glue you got was expired. Next time check the date - it should be embossed on the tube sealing stripe. Second, you should clean the metal surface with a wire brush, sand paper and rubbing alcohol before applying any kind of glue - it binds better and holds longer. Other than that, a perfectly fine home repair. Kudos.
Hey thanks for the comment, you can see at 4:45min mark I cleaned the area with emery cloth before I put the exhaust tape on, but you are right, where the glue goes I didn't do that. Would have been better to do that, you are right. I do think the tube was good, I just think it settled somehow, and the oil part was on the top, I didn't expect that haha. Wow need that cause installed a roush axleback and it’s a clamp on and there a slit that’s 1-2 millimeters wide and half an inch long. Never knew there was such a thing to wrap an exhaust leak

I had the worst exhaust leak. Applied the steel weld clay, muffler cement amd fibre band aid. Now I found another leak. Use steel weld for fixing small holes! It's very efficient and get hard very quick!

@@riz_mub8466 Same for my car, that lexus IS250 exhaust parts were really expensive, so if I can get a few years out of the tape thats good enough for me!!!

My IS250 has the same thing happening on both sides. How is it holding up after a few weeks?
I actually did the repair August 29 and its still holding so that's a few months now. So far so good. It was worth it to try because the tape did not cost much compared to new exhaust so I figured nothing to loose.

also I tried with JB WELD but I couldn't apply it properly since I didn't lift the car.....will the tape still work?

Hey buddy, thanks for reaching out, it's been about a year and it's still holding, sounds like there might be a leak starting, but I'm not sure if that's from the tape or somewhere new. But even with the new leak, its still way quieter than what it was originally. If you applied JB weld already I think the tape will work if the JB weld is fairly smooth. If the JB weld is rough, then the tape may not work. I used some emery cloth to smooth everything out before I put the tape on and I think that's what helped. When the video loaded I instantly knew it is an IS250... mine is at a repair shop to fix the exact same issue that you had...
You have a good eye!!!!! The tape actually lasted about 1.5 years so not too bad. I just replaced the exhaust as it got too bad, I did film the job. I had to replace that whole centre section. Its quite an expensive piece !!! Thanks for the comment and have a great day :)
Mine just gets replaced from the end of cat until the mid cat on both sides. I'm a bit afraid of how they will get out the o2 sensor and things like that but lets hope the best :) Thanks for your comment I will check out your vid about the replace.
@@gulyasgergo7342 The O2 sensors were a bit tricky, but you can count the number of turns they take to get out, then do this in reverse to put them back in, that's how I did mine. Also you need a deep O2 sensor wrench. I did not have one (I just had the regular wrench) so I made a small cut in the O2 sensor heat shield (it is still there) but it allowed me to get the short wrench in. I think the video should be out in about 3-4 weeks. Thanks !!!!

Hey thanks for the comment. I would totally do it. It gave me about 1.5 years before it blew again and at that point it was just too bad. The vehicle in this video was my Lexus and the leak was before the catalytic Convertor so there was a fair amount of pressure there. If your leak is closer to the rear you will have less pressure and it may last longer. If you have a Lexus IS250 I filmed doing the whole exhaust. I just haven’t posted it. In a nutshell for like 10 bucks of product I would say do it. Even if you get 6 months. That exhaust piece for this Lexus cost me and arm and a leg. Thanks for the question

This looks almost exactly like the issue my Lexus GS 300 has. How is the solution holding up so far?
Hey brother, well the tape has failed, its a really cheap fix, but the good thing is it lasted almost 2 years. Keep in mind I used a wire wheel to clean it, and I also used some exhaust Goop. So you will probably get between 1-2 years out of the tape if you do it right. Funny thing is this was not even my car. It was my neighbours car. I was able to buy it cheap last week, so I will be weaving more Lexus content in soon:) The exhaust is going to be fixed again :)
If theres a leak on exhaust, the engine cant cehicle hars to move. Its happened on my otj. Pls advise.

I bought a 2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS off of someone and the flex pipes on both sides are bad would it be a bad idea to try this ?
you could try it, its not going to hurt anything, but I find that if its leaking in the middle of the flex pipe you can't really seal it, because wherever you put the tape, its just going to come out of another area of the flex, and the tape is not flexible once the heat hardens it. BUT if the leak is right at the beginning of the flex you could put tape right at the front, or rear of the joint and it may hold for a bit, but if its leaking in the middle it wont work. On this car it was leaking right at the seam where the flex starts so the tape actually held for quit sometime. If you look at this vid, its the exhaust replacement, you can see how it just broke. I just replaced the exhaust, I got about 1.5 years out of it. Because of where it was cracking the exhaust was flexing and the seal was lost. Still, 1.5 Years was pretty good :)
ok i understand the experiment but cutting out bad section and splicing in new cheap oriellys connectors with clamps works better

The clear tape goes on ? Or the red tape? I thought red tape.
Hey there, see 5:30 mark where I actually apply it. The red tape is on both sides, and the clear is in the middle, and its the clear that goes onto the bad pipe. If you clean it, you should get some time out of it, I put some of that exhaust goop under the tape to try to fill the joint so maybe that's why it lasted longer. If you don't buy the same one that I used, make sure you read the directions as another brand could be different. Here is the one I used Amazon.ca @t and Amazon.com @t its under the brand Permatex in the US. Good luck with the repair :)

Hey buddy I tried!!!!!! I found it was so badly rusted that the more I sanded the deeper the rust went and I was afraid of going through. I tried to weld at first but the metal was soo bad and that didn't work so this was next. Did my best!!!!
@@GarageKing right but after you put the goop on is when you decided to use the Emory cloth! I was just saying the Emory shoulda came before the goop! I was just busting balls, nothing too serious!

@@GarageKing actually, I went out and bought a kit and it did not work at all! It blew right out! I ended up cutting the section out and putting in a new section!
@@nutsackbear8053 Oh wow!! That is crazy, I mean I can see it failing after a while, but right away? Maybe the hole was too big??? Also maybe mine worked because I put the goop on and then taped over it all?? The goop is suppose to stop leaks so maybe it stopped (or at least reduced) some of the exhaust pressure pushing on the tape. Good on you for cutting out and installing a piece, that's not easy work. Thumbs up from me on that one!!!
