Thank you Carl for the podcast that takes us through the long journey of what John X safaris is to this day. The passion, dedication, determination and tireless efforts you and the rest of the family members have put to have this thriving safari business that attract clients from overseas every year.
Thanks for the awesome podcast guys. Very informative and it gives us as the layman a much better understanding of the game! I do however feel that as South Africans and hunters, your average Joe will never be able to reap the benefits of our heritage and have the excitement of hunting a beautiful Kudu or Nyala purely because it is beyond our budget. Its well understood that a huge amount of cash is pumped into land management, genetics and the basic upkeep of the various locations and as such, the prices are obviously going to be more expensive. The unfortunate thing is though that as local guys, we have little to no options in terms of hunting. As Carl rightly said, we are all custodians of the land and as such we would love to enjoy the benefits of this. Perhaps the next podcast or one in the future sometime could touch on outfitters that do cater for the local South African dude. Just a thought. Again, great podcast and hope to see a few more
Thank you for the insightful conversation. It is always good to hear the things that some people are scared to talk about. Mr. Van Zyl, your passion for hunting and conservation is truly inspirational. Keep up the good work in the industry for future generations to follow in your footsteps as you followed in your parent's footsteps. Best regards.
A very informative podcast that highlights the many factors that PH's and Outfitters have to deal with; to make sure the client who is paying large sums of money is satisfied with what he or she received.
Hi Carl. Don’t generalise the biltong hunter. If he chooses to hunt with you then yes he should pay what value you offer. The traditional biltong hunter generally wants venison and biltong. That’s what he should pay for. Even if it costs staying under the stars and stalking on his own. When you talk about prices compare apples with apples. Otherwise, having grown up in the Grahamstown and Bedford area myself, you have an impressive outfit. Well done.
Thanks for the great interview. Enjoyed listening to the chat and gave me some great insight in the industry. I'm a videographer and found it hard to watch though. Luckily I was listening to the video while I was editing videos. Carl's lighting was good but your lighting was very bad and that gave the camera difficulty to focus. A tip for the next interview type video, set the focus to manual if you don't have any one thats manning the camera.
Very informative, but I disagree that local hunters are growing. Maybe some valid reasons around pricing, but vast numbers of local hunters are being priced out of the market. Just referring to friends, most used to hunt 3-4 times per year - now it is maybe 1 hunt per year, or every 2nd year.
In my mind it does mean that there`s a gap in the market for somebody to fill...an outfit that caters to the local market of hunters with reasonable Rand prices... I get you though, the dollar prices charged are waaaayyyy out of most SA hunters reach...
I am glad there are many good outfitters in east cape. Some have great pricing and good quality and some are very high cost with same quality and some maybe have great quality for high price. Do your homework folks. I am going to go to Africa as many times as I can and as soon as I can before pricing gets crazy. Shipping has already started to be borderline insane in my opinion. I know many people that would not have hunted Africa if a kudu costs what an elk does on average. Thank goodness it doesn’t….yet.
Thank you for sharing your insights about the outfitters in East Cape. Your dedication to hunting in Africa is inspiring, and I hope you have many successful trips ahead!

Ye I agree I thought I had everything nailed but was focusing more on the audio rather than the video quality. We learn
