How have I never heard of these guys? A genuinely original treatment of a Curtis Mayfield classic, in a hybrid style that I didn't even know existed. WOW. (Good video, too.)
Anthony Johnson Thinking about the fame that fishbone could have had always makes me depressed. At least they inspired a lot of bands. Sadly, not enough.
Nah I think you miss the point. Fishbone were *too* original, *too* humorous, *too* uncategorizable, and *too* truthfully raw to break out massive in the mainstream. I think its a badge of honor they were relatively unknown to the MTV culture.
I love Fishbone. Nowadays a lot of people completely overlook the funk metal and funk punk scene from back in the day. There's so much great stuff from that era
I was some chick living in Israel in 1988, moved there from Canada for a few years. This record was on my walkman day and fucking night. I sing this song in my sleep! I'll never forget you guys... You got me through so much in that crazy country. I love you forever xo
Saw Fishbone in concert at the Memphis in May Music Festival. Interestingly, they played on the same stage just before George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars. Great band, I was just thinking of Fishbone today!
It's weird. I can tell all the musicians are talented and the singer has a good voice. But I haven't heard one song by this band that's catchy or enjoyable to me. They're just all over the place. The chord progression and song structure are kinda boring to me. The melody of the vocals just sounds drawn out and not really original. All my personal opinions. I'm sure the fans would argue with me but I'm just being brutality honest here. It sucks because they're all talented i just can't find a one damn song I can get into.
I bought fishbone albums when I started at college and I still listen to them on RUclips and radio...I don't believe that they are not popular....what's mainstream media hasn't always changed...it's taste preferences and know how that surface the unheard...eventually evolved into the "masses "
I met this "Guy" when I was still a "Wild Thing" back in Miami. With his lucite cane , children following him around calling him Mr. Fishbone , it was hilarious.
My friend and I were discussing the best show we had ever seen: we both had the show in mind. Sheepishly, because I have seen a lot of amazing shows, I confessed it was Fishbone. My friend said Wait, me too. Then we started comparing notes--same show in Seattle. That powerful of a band and a show. Even today, don't miss them if you get the chance to see Fishbone live.
Some of the music they make falls into soul punk category but this is definitely soul metal it is one of my favorites of the tribute/cover songs that they have done
translation: "I have no idea what I'm talking about" RHCP wouldn't exist without George Clinton and Funkadelic, but you probably don't know who they are.

Saw Fishbone live at The Blue Note, Columbia, MO c. 1991. Crazy cool ass concert! I actually met lead singer b/f concert while asking/bugging sound booth guys questions. We spoke for a few minutes & then he tried to sell me a book of poetry he wrote for $35, but I only had enough money for beers!
Saw these guys live in 1994. My friends and I were standing next to a sunken area beside the stage with road cases and amps and stuff, and right before the show the bass player was down there getting his shit together. Her looked at me and saw I was smoking a cigarette and gestured if he could bum one. I threw one to him and they took the stage. In the middle of the first tune he sparked up a big fat joint, smoked half of it while playing and threw me the last half all while wearing only a towel that was slowly falling off. Good fuckin times.
These guys were so much dang fun. I remember when I first got Chim Chim's Bad Ass Revenge album, it was like "What the heck is going on here?!" 😄😄😄 Truly a unique band.
I like Fishbone a lot and at the time they issued this song I almost loved them! But I must be honest to admit this isn't one of their best efforts, especially if compared to the original from Curtis Mayfield, which is an absolute masterpiece.

A genuinely original treatment of a Curtis Mayfield classic, in a hybrid style that I didn't even know existed.
WOW.
(Good video, too.)
At least Fishbone is still going strong for those of us who truly appreciate their music and talent. TRULY overlooked and under appreciated.
This group should have been massive. It's a damn shame how the music industry did Fishbone
Anthony Johnson Thinking about the fame that fishbone could have had always makes me depressed. At least they inspired a lot of bands. Sadly, not enough.
@@redemptiongoes6030 All those bands should start a gofundme and pay their dues
Agreed. Saw them live so many times. Played them on my radio shows all of the time. They never got the support they deserved.
So amazing live!

So much gratitude! music was dead, this just blew my mind when it came out in 88. Truth and soul is all we need !
Hall of Fame em’!

Yeah Canada is crazy. 😉
Always felt like Fishbone was the next evolution of Pfunk.
Agreed! Fishbone is such a mega talented band. Dropping some serious funk!
Fishbone is not a style of music Fishbone is just Fishbone!
More like mixing P-funk with funk metal.
Saw Fishbone in concert at the Memphis in May Music Festival. Interestingly, they played on the same stage just before George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars. Great band, I was just thinking of Fishbone today!

Fishbones expressions kill me! Love it though, you can tell he is really feeling the music. Love when an artist gets into it like that!
Greatest band ever.!!!!
How has no one told me about this band? This fires on all cylinders CRUSH
A dazzling array of sights and sounds to free the mind, soul and spirit FISHBONE INCOMPARABLE
Man I love this band. This sound is legit today.I think I saw em in the 90's
Dope version!!
as relevant today as it was when Curtis originally cut it, and Fishbone does a massive rendition, another unsung voice, original Afro-punk sound
Fishbone were afropunk before it existed!
This version is equally good as the original by Curtis Mayfield. Just a completely different sound. Brilliant!
It's even a little better, I would think.
@@fukpoeslaw3613 It's kind of like hard rock/funk vs. sweet soul/funk. I love both versions.

@@captainbuzzkill4658 How about Ma and Pa? Catchy tune, great ska beat, and sort of manic vocals. But it does have to be one's cup of tea as they say.
I played it at a party and a dude said, "Wait it is like someone funked up the Crutis Mayfield version, if that is possible."

At my grown age, I'm just being turned on to this collective ! Brilliant 👏🏿 👏🏿 ❤❤
There was nothing like Fishbone, live, at huge festivals back in the 90’s…
Angelo had the stage presence to blow the audience away.
i hope they will be inducted in rock and roll hall of fame someday
These guys are amazing in concert.
I so them decades ago though.
The Violent Femmes was on the bill too,
along with Blue Oyster cult.

I got to see these cats live in like 1990. I always thought of them as black soul metal
Some of the music they make falls into soul punk category but this is definitely soul metal it is one of my favorites of the tribute/cover songs that they have done
Some of their music, but some is ska. They did whatever they wanted.

the morphing on the video reminds me of the morph sequence on Michael J, "black & white," a little! #JustSayin'

Too much, too soon... Sadly. They should have been huge like the Red Hot. At least. /-D
