If you want to retire in Malaysia and u love city life but dont want to face the traffic in KL. Trying living in Cyberjaya. Come January 2023 there will be a new MRT station so u can travel to KL for about half an hour without having to drive. Cyberjaya is a very low density township and properties there are way cheaper than KL. I bet with the exchange rate, u can afford to buy a landed property which is really cheap as well. Im actually going to live there in 1-2 month from now. Im really excited because I have had enough of living in big cities 🤭.
And while KL isnt Singapore safe. I wouldnt say its dangerous. At least for global standards. I have live and travel abroad. I can say Malaysia is not any less safe than most developed countries, even safer than some developed countries (Especially America 🤭).

Living in Singapore is like a stressed out fish in a nice circular aquarium. The plants are all spaced nicely to look symmetric. All sands and rocks are cleaned daily to be as white as possible for visitor to be impressed.
Living in Malaysia is like a normal fish in a small stream with natural rock, dead leaves, green algae. Just doing its business to live, eat, die happily.

There is medical insurance coverage for a plan as little as 100myr a month and the rest of living cost is affordable. Now, I manage to do things that I like and do a side hustle here its easy without much stress. You will enjoy driving here especially to beaches. All the best Dude

I’m a Malaysian (SPR) married to a Singaporean. Recently my hubby and I talked about our retirement. Our 23 year old 4 room HDB is fully paid. We have no loan because we believe in living within our means. Our 2 elder daughters already purchased their own HDB flat. My hubby is still working as my youngest daughter is in 2nd year University. We are getting our monthly payout from CPF Retirement account in 3 years time. Not much but enough for our needs. For medical needs we have Medisave and insurance . We decided to remain here in Singapore as our family is here. I’m from JB which is so near and we visit my family in JB often. Transportation in Singapore is excellent . We are comfortable living here. We can go for holidays anywhere we want later when my hubby retire. My advice to young people is to start planning early so that you can reap the benefits later in life.

As a Malaysian who used to work in SGP I can say life is much less stressful in M'sia. You don't have big brother looking over your shoulder 24/7 and people are more relaxed. For a Singaporean retiree the culture is very similar and your SGD can provide much better quality of life especially if you decide to live in Ipoh, Malacca or Kuantan where property and cost of living is much cheaper than KL.

So, the house maintainance have nothing to do with how many land to build the property, it will depend on how good your management body do their jobs.

    Hi, Malaysian here.
KL city centre is a hectic city but greater KL could be slightly less stressful than its central area..consider places such as southern part of KL areas e g. Kelana Jaya, Cheras, Puchong, Kajang... they're still accessible by train and other public transport system while be somewhat closer to KL International Airport KLIA, which you can take advantage of the cost to fly in and out from Malaysia. Rental in this area is 10-15% cheaper while food and groceries are about the same as KL city centre... for me living in this semi developed urban area is still cost effective than other places such as Georgetown or JB which are still somewhat busy and no train system and might have lesser access to things a proper mega city like KL and Singapore do
In contagious Klang Valley area, the best places to live are those areas that are close by LRT and MRT system not other trains like monorail, KTM or others..
If you're retiring as single Singaporean you can live quite comfortably with a monthly budget of around 1500 sgd in this area I'm discussing about
If you're more into nature lifestyle Kota Kinabalu is probably better than most island or coastal areas of Peninsular.. I heard there are many Korean expats living there which suggest it as a livable place to live as foreigner.

You are wrong on the Tax residency. Malaysia only tax income earned in Malaysia, so if your income is from Singapore, then that income us not subjected to Malaysian tax. However your income in Singapore may be subjected to Singapore withholding tax if you are not a tax resident. It used to be 10% withholding. Having said that, you can still submit a tac return in Singapore and claim the excess, if your tax bracket don't exceed the withholding.

I think there is no right or wrong or which is better. Is a choice as an individual. Is it really difficult to retire in Singapore? Nah not true. If you want to lead to a simple life retire with comfortability you got to start planning your retirement when you are young. Eg. You can aim for 5 rooms flat or even 4 rooms flat HDB instead of condominium. You can go for hawker center or food court instead of restaurant food everyday. Do you know that food in Singapore are cheaper than Malaysia ? Because of our strong currency. No chicken? Eat pork , no pork eat fish or beef. A normal worker in Singapore drawing monthly 3K Vs Malaysia worker in Malaysia drawing 3k RM. A bowl of Noddle could easily cost 6-7 RM VS 3-4 SGD. You can start buying some retirement plan insurance and your own saving bla bla bla.... By the time you reach retirement age you had completed paying your housing loan. If you are smart enough and sufficient money to buy another property. You can rent it out. That is what many Singaporean are doing . Of course if you are those who spend alot when you are young and doesn't have any financial planning than life will be difficult when you are old. I guess this will be the same wherever you go. Like I said it's individual. I am not rich but I would be able to retire in Singapore with comfortability and stress free. I know in future even if I retire I will have a Monthly passive income of at least 4,000 SGD excluding my CPF and retirement plan from insurance. But if you are talking about you want big landed property or high-N condominium than that is different story. I would prefer what is affecting me and my need in my daily life like safety , conveniency , even food safety.

    • @Emsyaz
      @Emsyaz Год назад

      Agree.
Finally, found someone on the internet who knows how to properly compare the cost of living in SG and MY.
I'm a Singaporean and each time I go JB, I would not compare the price there with SGD to know whether its cheap or expensive.
But I'd ask myself if my income in Singapore is exactly the same amount in Malaysia's currency, would I consider that item cheap or expensive...

  • @SkyLee91
    @SkyLee91 2 года назад +7

Let imagine you are 60 years old now and I choose to retire and live in Johor/KL.
Morning you want breakfast, you can cook or drive to buy something. In sg, u can walk to buy coz sg is small and many food stalls are nearby.
So for cost wise, it will involve car, petrol or electricity, car insurance, road tax, maintenance fee. Will it cost a lot for you? It depends what kind of car you drive, which come back to the question what kind of life style you want.
Another big concern is living cost. As RM is getting weak and Malaysia needs a lot of goods to be imported, I guess in future living cost in Malaysia will be far higher than Singapore.
You can use Singapore dollars to convert yes the rental is cheaper but for your daily expense like meal, grocery and entertainment. After SGD to RM, you will feel the differences is not big as pre-covid.

Do you know that at the lowest end you can get a 3-4SG$ used car? in some households including mine we usually have this type of cheap car which we'll use for 'pergi kedai/pasar' or drop family to nearby train station.. and for semi to long distance travel we use better car..
If you're retired and not a heavy car user as working people trust me it's convenient to keep a small car in your yard and drive nearby the area you live.
If living cost is a concern to you imagine how much you'll need to expend if you continue to rent and pay for all your need living in Singapore...as a retiree I'd say you'll find it cheaper if you're living with your retirement fund..plus you still could continue to invest in Singapore which give you Singaporean dollar income
Alternatively you can live in other ASEAN cities though I can see Singapore old folk would be better off than other ASEANs if they take advantage of geo abritage during their senior years.

Honestly, there is really alot of information not covered when you want to live in a foreign land, to really experience it, do just go stay for 1-2months before deciding as there are many many factors that affect your quality of life.
Natural Disasters, floods, haze, power outage, water outage, thefts, robberies, lack of 24 hr clinics/food within your area, hospitals that require you to submit your name and only admit you maybe after 24-48 hrs from application.
Moreover cost to stay in Malaysia is 1m for MM2H buying homes in Msia. You can buy the ppty at 1.5m RM and in few years it becomes 1.2m or even if it remains the currency risk may cause your housing value in USD to drop, so yes you buy cheap but it becomes cheaper.
There are many little things we do not notice until we really live in the environment and experience for ourselves. the tradeoffs are also there like the huge area you can travel around within 1 country compared to the size of SG and those are experiences that will not come by any other way. To each their own but please do not make a hasty decision.

    Chris’ analysis is quite balanced.
A recent experience for me…, property wise, the price of reasonable quality condo (freehold) is a fraction of subsidised HDB flat. I never thought about buying any property across the causeway….until recently, ….The price during Covid was irresistible.
And actually only recently i started watching tons of stories in RUclips about long stay foreigners, esp retiree, some working in Msia. I myself have started to re-engage with activities in Msia after working overseas for all my life so far. Completely viable option to retire in Msia.
Still having considered all factors, it is not suitable for everyone.
I notice there are some comments that borders on ‘nationalism’. That is not sensible. This video only suggest what may work for you.

Dunno why this appears on my timeline. But let me chip in.
Before I chip in my thoughts on the retirement. Let me say something about the earnings.
For professionals in non finance jobs, MY > SG. When you factor in the living cost and work hours, MY has the higher $ to work ratio. This is based on my experiences on both countries. And also due to the fact that SG has longer average working hours than MY.
Just to give an example, an engineer could earn about 9 to 15k in MY, while SG sets you back at 4-7k. There are just no comparison for the lifestyle you can get as an engineer in MY compare to what you get in SG. Only if you travel out, using the strong currency exchange, then the SG engineer could enjoy much better exchanged cash from the foreign currency.
So it's a pretty much misunderstood fact that SG always have the higher earning, but to me, it's very dependent on the job you're working.
More so if you're an entrepreneur, it's easier and chances are better in MY. Not to mention the 32m of population that you can tap into.
Also, to be the top earners in the range of top 20%, it's so much easier to achieve in MY compare to SG.
Now on the retirement. I'd say, ignore JB and KL. The cost of living and the amount of people and traffic jams just not worth for retirement. Penang has the balance of almost every points you have mentioned.

People assume that current conditions will be future conditions and assume that they will definitely move to Malaysia for retirement. However, Singapore plans ahead to deal with future problems whereas Malaysia doesn’t even deal with current problems. So when the reality strikes the results are fairly predictable. Cost of living is much cheaper, and little traffic. Beaches and forests just a short drive away. Every month is local staycation, and easy overseas travel via KL. Malaysia is a great option for Singaporean retirees esp with similar culture and food, super easy to settle in with the locals.

I suggest you watch Mr Money TV's channel first, because there're quite a lot of things that you have really gotten wrong.
    1. No, it's not cheaper to buy a property in malaysia. IF you're talking about dollar vs RM, then yes, but if you're talking about buying power in terms of working in malaysia and buying/spending in malaysia, then the answer is NO. In fact it is more affordable to own a condo (NOT HDB) in singapore compared to malaysia. The location that you mentioned right across the border is considered reasonable, those can be up to 1.5-3 times more expensive in KL for the same size. Or I would say your're basically comparing property price in JB and Sg, not Malaysia and Sg.
    2. Maintenance of condo in malaysia is poor but it's not really due to developer's interest to expand their projects in other locations. It has always been poor since the beginning, be it landed or not. I personally know people who bought condo in prime area in KL that costs up to RM6m, and the lobby of the condo was tainted with paint stain, toilet pipes and taps were leaking, gym facilities breakdown, all just within a few months after moving in.
    3. Similar to point number 1, cars in Malaysia ARE NOT cheaper, with an exception for USED CARS. Speaking of earning and spending, and let's not talk about shitty local brands like proton/perodua, brand new imported/CBU or continental cars are more affordable in Singapore. For example, you can own a brand new C200 for SGD270k, but in malaysia, the same model costs RM290k. It's only cheaper to own a car in malaysia when it comes to (a) used cars whose values have depreciated significantly like audi, volvo, volkswagen, (b) national cars like perodua and proton.

I think ur only accepting negative facts about MY. Let me explain
      1. He is talking about RETIREMENT in malaysia, not working there. If he really wants to use SGD to spend in malaysia, then Im sure he has assets in SG he can sell or rent to get extra income. And there are other options other than KL and JB, and if he wants to retire in a laid back environment. I think NOBODY including him will ever bother retire in big cities. Cuz it makes no difference. And you said that it is cheaper to buy a condo in SG than to buy a property in MY? Lets say lah the price of a luxury condo is SGD 500k in singapore. For the price tag, they may not offer much bigger spaces due to land scarcity. And if you own a car, finding a parking space for it is a problem unless u pay a premium for extra services such as reserved parking space. For the money, which translates to RM 1.6 million in today's rate, u can buy a luxury private bungalow here with twice the space, twice of breathing room, twice the space for your cars, twice or even triple of everything. And even your own swimming pool. If ur buying in a rural, private luxury residential areas, the chances are u r getting the best bang for your buck.
      2. Even though those incidents do occur, the chances are rare and only happen to certain people, but that doesnt mean every condo in malaysia is badly maintain. There are some places where their property is well maintained.
      3. If cars in singapore REALLY is cheaper than malaysia, then why not all singaporeans own a car? In fact why most singaporeans opt to choose public transport than owning a car? So by ur logic, your country will be flooded with cars by now. And yes, we buy "shitty" branded cars becuz they are easy to maintain AND it is our national car, of course it is not a bragging right. But i can say that we malaysians are lucky to have cheaper options, luckier than singaporeans where their only options are expensive brands to make them feel more "atas". But car brands aside, u forgot to mention in order to own a car in singapore, u need to fork out a premium for ur COE paper alone as explained in the video, add the paper's fee with the car price alone is expensive enough to own a car. Plus we are talking about a 70k fee for just the cert alone. For that money u can buy a brand new honda civic in malaysia. And thats not all, even if you did get the cert, you can only drive your car for a maximum of 10 years before it has to be scrapped. So whats the fking point in owning a car that we can only drive for 10 years. Here in malaysia, we can buy our cars brand new and drive it for eternity, and we dont need a sheet of "paper" to dictate us how long we can own our car. And lastly you said it is MUCH cheaper to buy a brand new C200 in singapore than in malaysia. Again u have forgotten to factor in the cost of your COE. And you have forgotten that SGD currency is much bigger than MYR, so you cannot compare the prices directly without some currency conversions. For example, ur SGD 270k price tag for a brand new C200 does not include the price of an COE cert. If you add it all up, its has already exceeds your stated price. Let say the price of an COE is 70k, then your final paying price is a total of SGD 340k. Plus, the cost of maintaining your car hasnt included yet, so the cost of owning in the long run is much more expensive than in malaysia. And then u said the asking price for a C200 brand new in malaysia is RM290 k right? Ok so if we convert (1SGD=3.22 MYR in today's rate) the price in SGD is only 90k after round off. So ur either bad at math or didnt do any conversions before hand or maybe both. And as for the final price of SGD 340k (including COE) for your C200 alone, it is enough to buy an S class brand new here in malaysia and the excess can be used for maintanance costs and much more options. The possibilities are endless. Plus you can drive your brand new car for more than 10 years. Our cars can reach up to 2-3 decades old of ownership without being forced to sell for scrap.
So for conclusion, your info is false and I suggest u do a more thorough research if you really want to compare the cost of living and the cost of owning a car between the 2 countries.

@@brianljh8982 Dude, I have lived in both countries for decades, so don't try to challenge me on this, as my friends have tried to prove me wrong but failed. A friend of mine is in his mid 30's and always wanted to retire in malaysia, so guess what, he worked for a few years, got some money, bought a condo in JB through instalment, went there to chill for a year, and now he's complaining about the living costs there, he has run out of money despite living for just a year, and has decided to chill for a couple more months before getting a new job back in Sg again. No dude, like I said, you CAN buy a RM1.6m condo, but if you're paying that amount in prime or luxury area, you're at most getting something below 1000 square feet. And no again, I am dead serious that almost ALL condo in malaysia are poorly maintained unless you talk about really high end residential area like bukit tunku, which is equivalent to wallich residences here.
Nope, your comparison is wrong. If restaurant A charges you $12 for a burger, restaurant B charges you $10 + service + gst which costs around $12 too, can you say restaurant B is actually more expensive because of the service charge? No dude, they are the SAME! Just because malaysia doesn't specifically bring out the so-called COE, that doesn't necessarily mean malaysia cars are cheaper. You got to look at the overall price, but not just the base price + COE, because COE is just a policy implemented by the government to control traffic congestion. For example, if the base price of a C-class is SGD150k, and COE is SGD100k, you're saying it's expensive because of COE, right? What if the base price became SGD240k, and COE is just SGD10k? Will you still say the car is expensive because COE is only $10k? Fuck yes, of course, it doesn't matter how much the COE cost because it's the overall price that matters if you're talking about comparison in buying power. Malaysia can also anyhow charge RM190k for the base price for c-class, then throw in a RM100k COE and make it RM290k. Dude, without currency conversion, why do you think a car in malaysia costs about the same in SG? Did you know that studies have shown that cars in malaysia and indonesia are more expensive than cars in Sg in terms of buying power? Let's put currency exchange aside since we're talking about earning and spending within the same country. It's basic economy dude. Sg implemented COE that makes people think it's the COE that makes the car expensive, because this is a smart way to make people think that government is doing something reasonable, unlike malaysia that slap people with big fat price tag without giving you an explanation.
Another thing is the loan duration. Sg only allows you to take up to 7 years, so that makes it sound expensive because the more expensive the car is, the more you have to fork out every month to make sure your loan is completed within 7 years. Speaking of this, it actually makes cars in malaysia even more expensive because the longer it takes to pay, the more the interest is. Don't get me wrong. I'm talking about expensive, not affordability. You can say it is more affordable to own a brand new car in malaysia because they let you take 9 instead of 7 years to pay, but in the end, the interest is actually higher.
Like I said earlier, I'm talking about used cars that are cheaper in malaysia, not brand new cars. Also, the reason why Sg isn't flooded with cars like malaysia is simply because of used cars. You can't strictly say it's expensive to own a car in Sg, but you can say it's cheaper to own a used car in malaysia.

Then if approved, must transfer RM 1 million into a Malaysian bank. account. How many pensioners retire on an annual income of RM480k or SD 148K? Not many. If you had that level of income, you could retire like a king in Thailand without having to transfer a substantial amount in a local deposit account. MM2H program will crash now as the monthly income level is too high. Plus many pensioners don't want to invest large amounts offshore. Doubt you can compare Kuching with Malacca when it comes to racial harmony.its more liberal and laid back in Sarawak in my opinion.safety wise Sabah would rank quite low since it's full of stateless people from the southern philippines.sarawak would be your best bet if you're Chinese since sarawakians for some reason love Chinese.

@@SSxxx18 Agreed. It’s quite boring to live in Kuching let alone other parts of Sarawak. This is speaking from experience. I live in northern Peninsula. Penang is not too far from where I live. Can go to Hat Yai. Not too far either. And can go on a day trip to Langkawi. So yeah, it was quite boring in Sarawak 😇

Living in Malaysia is not so suitable for anyone who cares about efficiency, who cannot tolerate traffic jam in peak hours, who never came to private MY hospitals , who never lived in Malaysia residential area for at least 100 days and those who don't enjoy driving around.

Ya, its true. During peak hours it really is traffic jam, but those scenarios mostly occur in big cities and tourist spots on holiday season. If you live in a small town, chances are there wont be any jams TBH. But, if you really like the feeling of owning your own car without the hassle of buying an COE, spirited driving, and keeping it for the rest of your lives, then MY is one of your choices.
