there is something about hearing singing in irish. it touches my soul in a way nothing else can. i remember up in donegal at the end of a good nights drinking in the pub an old little lady stood up and started singing in irish. i was nearly crying after her few songs it was that amazing and i wasn't the only one.

Don't stop teaching Irish. I'm convinced it's the foundation of the poetry that weaves through the words, written and spoken, by the Irish whether in English or in Irish.

even if i'm native german and a abroad learner of gaeilge, what Stiofán did is awesome.. "simply" holding up the flag and prevents irish from dying. It`s such a beautiful language and should not only be spoken in their Gaeltachtei only.. it is indeed a living language and should not be easily displaced by english

Agree with @Felix. I'm German, had 6 years of Russian lessons in school, can't say more than a couple of words because I never gave a damn, meant nothing to me. I was fluent in English after 4 years of lessons. Mainly because I wanted to understand songs from IRL/UK/USA. I discovered the i-net *woah* and found friends in UK, using Engl. in daily life ever since (for 20 years now). Your people need to be given a reason to learn Irish again, music is a fabulous agent! Don't let Irish die!

If you have the tongue, treasure it; as the Navajo do their own and for reasons well known.

You can lead a horse to water ... Learning a language takes effort ON THE PART OF THE LEARNER. If people don't feel a connection with a language, then they fail to take it on board.

Think people as a baby you start learning to speak. 5 years later you start school and then you start to learn to spell and read then how to put words together. that is the way to learn ,no matter what age speak first then the rest will fall in line.

I'm doing german five years and the majority of the people in our class, including me, are better at it than in Irish. That really shouldn't be the case.

We have a 13 year programme in school to learn Irish. How we do not have far more people fluent in the language by the end of school is ridiculous. Learning poems and short stories and the likes as gaeilge couldn't be more of a waste of time in my view.

The Irish education system can learn from what its Ukrainian counterpart has done to keep the Slavic language very much a living language. That's despite the heavy use of Russian within Ukraine, not just in the southern and eastern parts of the country. I consider Western Ukraine that country's equivalent to a Gaeltacht, although Ukraine has just one official language at the national level (Ukrainian) vs. the Republic of Ireland (Gaelic and English). Long live Irish Gaelic and Ukrainian.

they should teach irish as a living language rather than focusing on old poems and stuff. imho.

Tá cúpla duine anseo ar buile leis an mbean mar gheall ar Pheig, ach caithfear a rá go bhfuil pointe aici. An chuspóir atá ag an gcuraclam na gaeilge sa tír seo ná moladh do dhaoine gaeilge a labhairt, ach feictear an teanga a lán níos deacra dóibh tar éis scéalta agus dánta cosúil le 'Peig" a léamh. I mo thuairim, ba cheart bealaí nua a aimsiú chun taispeáint nach bhfuil an teanga chomh dona.
