I totally agree with you on the quarters I have my book of quarters that were released from 1999-2008. I'm still working on territory's and getting all of the military forts though.
Sports cards and PEZ dispenser collecting are not "fads". Both have had many, many collectors for decades and continue to spawn new collectors. "Fad" is defined as short-lived or temporary.
+Panzer shreck me too! I'm kinda bummed they didnt show any footage of anyone playing with pogs and using any type of slammer to flip the pogs. i even had a pog binder with plastic sheets to slide my pogs in as if they were baseball cards lol.
Yugioh is easily the 2nd best selling and most popular if mot 1st tcg ever only mtg compares, and only 10% or so of yugioh players and past players care about thenolder cards.
Missed a few: Bakugon (anybody who went to middle school from 2008-2010) I knew kids with cardboard boxes filled to the brim with little plastic spheres... And more recently, fidget spinners (The engineering lab where I work teaches people how to use the 3-D printer by having hem make fidget spinners with it)
Collecting is very rewarding. When I used to travel a lot I always kept the change (banknotes) and placed them in albums, but now that I can't travel I started purchasing worldwide banknotes from a dealer and that way I can get better quality, scarcer banknotes. It's fun.
+BAJ No bs, there's a lot of math into it, sometimes attacking with the wrong creature means you lose the game, there's defensive strategies, and more careless, offensive strategies, etc. But still, sometimes if you don't draw the right card in the right time/order you'll lose. The same goes for the opposing side. So yeah, in a lotta ways Magic is "a combination of poker and chess" and let me add "and more!" ;)
+BAJ True...chess doesn't have 20thousand different pieces and you don't have to make sure you choose the right ones without knowing what you opponents will have picked.
This list reminded me of how much I wanted "things" as a kid and as an adult how much I really didn't "need" them at all makes me thankful for what I have.
As a retail worker when they first came out I can say without a doubt that SKYLANDERS should be on this list. The amount of parents tearing displays apart looking for "Special rare limited edition" figures was ridiculous. Every time a new one came out they HAD to buy it.
+TheWillaceGaming Hot Wheels are not a fad. There are some highly valuable rare ones out there, particularly from the early days. The only real fad thing about them is that they'll do a Hot Wheel of just about anything. Other than that, they can easily be highly collectible toys.
Beyblades, Yugioh, and just near the end of my being interested in that kind of thing B-daman were what dominated my childhood. I remember mixing and matching parts of both B-daman and Beyblades to make the coolest one I could, I still have my favorite B-daman from when I was a kid sitting by my bed as a reminder of that time. I got in many a fight with friends about suspected theft, both as the perpetrator and the victim. But what I really have fond memories of is Yugioh (again, I still have some cards beside my bed, I haven't touched them since I put them there mind you), and the biggest fights, a friend of mine was convinced I stole his blue eyes white dragon (I didn't, it was a mutual friend, I did take his Man-Spider toy though, I still feel bad about that, I don't think I even used it after I took it) which led to one of the most drawn out feuds of my childhood. But it was also responsible for the most fun of the three, I still remember dueling my older sister, she's eleven years older than me and hard to get along with, those are the best memories I have of her from that time.
+Sebastian .Micheails The most expensive dark magician is like $70 (unless you have one of the ~100 Chinese dark magicians released released in Shonen Jump). The most expensive god card is only ~$15. WTF are you even talking about. The only cards that are worth large sums of money are tournament prize cards. Those can get into the thousands though. Minerva, the exalted lightsworn has a value between $2000 and $3000. The most expensive cards of all time have gotten into the tens of thousands, but all of those cards have recieved reprints which usually deminish the value. But god cards being worth thousands......no.
Collectibles and cards are major industries. I just sold one lot of Magic the Gathering cards within the past two weeks for a quick lump sum of $60,000. Which was about 60% of retail value, but was a quick transaction. Nostalgia is a valuable asset
I was not too much into collecting fad as a kid. As an adult I collected a few items in my various hobbies. One was Disney's , in a small way. Second was radio control wood kits, my collection is worth about $12,000. My number one is my pinball machine bank of 14 machines. Mostly purchased between 1992 to 2004 for about a $7,000 investment they are worth about $70,000.
I agree with most of this list. Everything except the Magic: The Gathering entry. Even after watching the video, I'm still not sure how you classified things as 'fads.' Magic is still going strong to this day, and seems to become a more serious market with each year, with three sets released each year and countless tournaments (several with big cash rewards for the winners) all over the place. Given that it launched in 1993 and is still around, that's a pretty long fad. (Please note: I care for the game myself, but being involved with gaming for about 15 years now I'm quite acquainted with it.)
Interesting to note that none of the items on the list came into existence after the year 2000 (except Silly Bandz which only received an honorable mention). It makes you wonder if technology hasn't deprived us of the joy of collecting.
My collection fads are all almost Disney-related, which are Vinylmations, pins, Tsum Tsums, Funko Pop figures and Mystery Minis, Itty Bittys, pressed pennies, and capsule toys (both from the US and Japan). I'm also currently collecting Animal Crossing Amiibo cards.
+yung amy Collecting Lego is an obsession. Not to mention Mint In Sealed Box (MISB) sets (the good ones) easily go for a premium. Recent Star Wars for example, discontinued can easily go for 2 or 3 times their recommended retail price.
***** Thank you!!! I have never kept anything in its original box. Firstly, I don't see the point in buying something and not being able to enjoy it for what it really is. But also, because it really annoys me to think that loads of kids (and adults) have missed out on playing with a really good Lego set after it became discontinued - all because a good portion of the stock was snatched up by others wanting to make their own profit on ebay, charging many times the original RRP.
***** Acquiring doubles, of surefire sets or that rare set from back in the 80's (I have set 6990 Monorail Transport System as an example). It's perfectly fine keeping good Lego sets mint in the box, given that for many other toys they're also kept in similar fashion by many fans. If you can keep that rare Star Wars figure in a box, then you should be able to do so for a rare Lego set. I play with Lego, but only when it comes to making MOC's nowadays, which I buy the necessary parts online, and/or use current line sets. How is Magic a fad when it's still being sold, played and collected to this day, TWENTY FIVE years later... The people who voted on this poll need to buy a dictionary.....
xXMLGgamer69Xx i love their channel but not obsessively. What I don't like is how people are taking this thing way too far. I can understand what they're doing is a bad idea for their future as a channel but still it doesn't have to be like this
I see several comments regarding Yugio and comic books but they really do not fit the definition of "fad". WatchMojo didn't do themselves any favors by including Sports cards and Magic cards to the list. Both of these are still produced and collected today and Sports cards were popular well before my father was born.
My godmother's kids were 80's kids, and when the Cabbage Patch Kid's riots started, she actually handmade one cause she didn't wanna go to the store. Can't blame her from the footage.
"Magic, a combination of poker and chess"............HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHHHH HAHAHAHAHAH. ahhh god, I always love it when people try and compare tcg's to chess. Seriously though anyone who knows anything about chess and magic should be able to see that chess takes FAR FAR FAR more skill and effort. Chess is one of the oldest games on the planet, an ageless test of skill, talent, and experience. Whereas magic is a fun card game designed to make money. To even compare the games is an insult to chess.
+Kahez ummm what, if you knew anything about chess you would know chess is one of the hardest games to master. magic is nothing compared to chess. nothing.
+Kahez also the idea chess is "simple" is astoundingly ill informed. human masters cannot compete against the most powerful chess engines in the world for a reason you know, the game is incredibly complex.
+Kahez thats really not an indicator of complexity. it just means magic has too many luck based variables for a computer, which is founded in logic. mtg is far closer to poker than it is to chess.
To all you saying YGO should be on this list. A fad is a product or idea that passes over a bit of time. YGO is still strong, it's collected, and played today.
Magic shouldn't be on the list since it's not a fad, as you mentioned in the beginning it's only things that were collectible for a short period of time. There are more Magic players today than ever before so it's still going on. I'm glad to see it on the list but I wasn't expecting it to be since it's not a fad.
hahaha I'm 26 and last year I started to collect Pokemon Cards again after an inpuls purchase at a convention. Now I finaly have the first series complete and I keep collecting the rest.
can we all take a second to appreciate the fact that funko pops flew right under the radar? I sell thousands of these things a month. they have a license for everything!
i was a 90's kid, and i still have a she box full of Pogs, and a binder full of Pokemon cards someone in storage :D Also im surprised to not see Giga pets at least get an honorable mention. Ill never forget half the kids in class (2-3 grade) Sneaking and feeding there pets durring class.
Yeah I had a Furby.... my dad wound up burning it at 3 o'clock in the morning because it started talking and freaking out. I'm convinced it was possessed lol.
how the hell is yu gi oh is not on the list!???!?!?!?!?!?!

+nick p its not a fad. Fads are short time. Yugioh still going on
+PowerCookie1 well so is pokemon and magic.
+nick p Thank you Yu-gi-oh is awesome!
+nick p Yu-Gi-Oh is much less popular than Magic and Pokemon.
Pretty surprised Yugioh isn't on the list.
+AshXXMayftw I am suprised too
eppicninjabunny
Especially since it's been growing more and more with each new set.
it can be pretty notorious too, it got banned at my school at a point where our shadow games had to be played secretly after school XD

Same, but we'd sneak them in anyways and play a game during lunch break.
+AshXXMayftw Yeah, i'm a Yugioh player and was hoping for it to be on this list.

@Matt S. Just no.

Seriously. Mtg is massive in comparison to the others on this list.
considering mtg is still being played on an internationally competitive level, i'd hardly call it a "fad"
How is Magic a fad when it's still being sold, played and collected to this day, TWENTY FIVE years later... The people who voted on this poll need to buy a dictionary.....

+Puthearoth Buth NOO
Get the fuck out of here
huehuehuehue
+Puthearoth Buth get your ass out of here or else
xXMLGgamer69Xx i love their channel but not obsessively. What I don't like is how people are taking this thing way too far. I can understand what they're doing is a bad idea for their future as a channel but still it doesn't have to be like this
pop funko's! the current trend!
Completely agree
Funko is on the level of Pokemon if you in any of the groups. Pop collectors are intense. That includes me.lol
+Vincent Stanley Yeah i am in a few, pops are a way of life
+Vincent Stanley yeah. I have a FUNKO collection that is pretty insane
+master destroyer what is your collection at?
Marbles, matchbox cars and monchhichi were much bigger and should be on the list. (From the list, I collected only pogs, but it was so shortlived...)
No number 1 POKÉMON cards
Yeah AGREED
Yu-Gi-Oh did not even hit the list, not even mention.... HA!
+Schrodinger222 lol chess is easier and a really simple game in comparision oh and boring af :|
Schrodinger222 well, it's impossible to program an unbeatable MTG AI, I think that makes MTG more complex ;)
+Kahez thats really not an indicator of complexity. it just means magic has too many luck based variables for a computer, which is founded in logic. mtg is far closer to poker than it is to chess.
MTG being labelled a fad when it's been gaining in popularity for 20+ years shows how sloppy WatchMojo constructs their lists...
When they showed the clip from the wonder years I was screaming "YASSSSS"!!!!!
YEAH!!! POGS!!
Still got mine I had when I was growing up.. along with my friends tears who I won them all off :)
That moment when you realize you own everything in the list. XD I really love collecting too much...
My sister had a green troll doll a long time ago, now her son loves Yu-Gi-Oh and has his parents buy that and Dragon Ball Z items all the time.
lmao when the chicken was playing magic
can we all take a second to appreciate the fact that funko pops flew right under the radar? I sell thousands of these things a month. they have a license for everything!
i was a 90's kid, and i still have a she box full of Pogs, and a binder full of Pokemon cards someone in storage :D
Also im surprised to not see Giga pets at least get an honorable mention. Ill never forget half the kids in class (2-3 grade) Sneaking and feeding there pets durring class.
deadass i showed up to kindergarten one day w silly bands up and down both of my arms lmao
I've seen that Garbage Pail Kids movie. I've a feeling the fact I don't remember anything other than that is a blessing.
I can't believe the fad that started all collecting fads was not on here. The pet rock.
I had alot of these items growing up; pogs beanie baby's, pkmnTC,Magic cards, silly bands, so on
"We've excluded McDonald's toys because collecting them was never a fad" lol
Yeah I had a Furby.... my dad wound up burning it at 3 o'clock in the morning because it started talking and freaking out. I'm convinced it was possessed lol.
0:47 that's my 3rd favorite show
In kindergarten we collected and traded the rubber bracelets. They are usually given out at health events.
i never heard of magic til i was in my 20s
I don't think Magic should be on here. I can tell you myself it is still as popular as it has ever been. 21 years is normally not a fad.
Never knew a single kid back in school that knew how to play that damn pokemon game...yet we all still collected them cards like lunatics.
