Now Im going to tell my age. When I got off the bus I walked across the street to the Golden Gate walked in and started playing the nickel slots. A lady walked up and asked what I wanted to drink, a screwdriver was delivered shortly and she got a nice tip as I was winning. The night went by quickly and I caught a bus out to Nellis and signed in. I was a whole 20 years old. No one ask my age. Loved my 3 years in vegas, worked for 2 years in the Mint, slots, and back office.
In the late ‘60s, when I was 10, my dad and I would stay at the Sal Sagev (Sal Saggy according to my dad). I loved it!!! I would walk up and down Fremont all day long and my dad would shoot craps all night. Better than Disneyland. No one ever bothered me or got weird. Different times.
I love your reviews! I love that you appreciate the history that the Golden Gate represents. So much history has been imploded in Vegas, it's nice that this property survives.
That wall light on the outside gave it away, as soon as you showed the view out the window I knew it, if I'm not mistaken Room 309, if so I stayed in that room in Aug. of last year(22), only small and I mean very small problem I had was with the shower, It was either Cold or burn your A** hot, no in between and since I don't mind cold showers it wasn't anything to complain about, other than that I loved it, staying there again this year in Sep.
I'm sad to hear that the restaurant had closed. Many shrimp cocktails there with a decent prime rib. Always a tradition no matter where I was staying. Thanks for the review!
Great place to gamble. My wife and I also stayed there before their renovation in the 2010’s and it was small and impressive in a good way. Loved the old style bathroom.
I'm so glad you're reviewing these smaller places. I see them and wonder what they're like but only have so little time in Vegas to spend. Your videos are so informative- thank you!
I just stayed there a few weeks ago... loved it.. stayed in room 227. It overlooks the Fremont St Experience, and with the windows and black out curtains, it was actually very quiet and nice. LOVE the Golden Gate. Highly recommend for a couple for one night or two nights. The closet in my room was huge, no second night stand, but well worth the less than 70 I spent for 1 night.
I Love your videos Ruby. It is informative, interesting and fun to watch ! The food reviews, the hotel ratings, even the games and facilities gives the viewer a heads up where to eat, stay and play. I missed Vegas so much, I am hoping to be able to visit it again soon. Thank you.
It takes a lot for me to watch a channel as part of my regular routine. You have made it into my top channels! I love Vegas and you showcase everything fantastically! Good personality and good editing!
Perfect timing for this video, Ruby. I'm going to visit my sister out in Summerlin at the end of March and I think I'll spend a couple days in downtown Vegas!!
Wow Ruby that video was your best one yet! The Golden Gate sounds like a place for us to visit, we would love the history you have showed us! I am going to watch this video again 💛 Just watched it a second time!💛💛By Golly!!!
This video makes me love y'all even more! I'm from South Carolina, and don't ask me why but every year that I had to do a state book report, I chose Nevada. So it should be surprising that it took me until 2016 before I actually ever visited Las Vegas. And let me tell you I fell in love! I love the history of Las Vegas would you talk a lot about in this video, and I am obsessed with it! I do a lot of the new things you do and love the insight you provide but love it when y'all do the old school! Keep it up and I can not wait to run into you in Vegas!!
I’m going to Vegas for the first time next weekend and then again in May with my sister - incredibly thankful for your style of videos, super helpful and fun to watch. Thanks Ruby!!
Great video Rubes! Since you stayed mid-week, I'd be interested in a video that shows what are some fun mid-week things to do. I've actually booked a mid-week (T-Th) stay next month b/c the prices are a fraction of the weekend prices ($99 for a terrace suite at Cosmo!!)) and less people. Thanks for all the entertaining and informative videos!
Going to Vegas end of April. I'll be staying here one night while I wait for my friend to get to town. Thanks for the review you inspired me. I love history and old buildings, I like the bathroom! It's nicer than my rental!
still so many place for the low rollers to enjoy vegas. Years ago I would goto vegas with $100 for a weekend, that included room and food, this was before resort fees. Vegas on a budget can still be done. Great Video.
As usual Ruby, a totally honest opinion . Love your channel . I’ll get to Vegas sometime this year from Australia 🇦🇺. Take care and keep those videos coming .
The coffee shop at the Golden Gate used to be my favorite place in Las Vegas for breakfast (I would drive there even if staying on the Strip). About 10-15 years ago "it changed" and they lost their short-order chef and veteran waitresses "More coffee, Hon?" I have never stayed there, but it does evoke a lot of charm. Sorry to hear the coffee shop is now gone 😞
I'm glad I came across this video I'll be staying at the hotel in 2 weeks my first time in Vegas and it's so nice that the deuce bus is right there too to take you all the way down the strip you don't even have to drive
Great review Ruby. We have never stayed there. So thanks for showing the room. Def small but I love the window opens. Bathroom def small but useable. Lol. We debated over pizza rock and evel pie also. We agree pizza rock has the better crust. But both are good. 🤗
Wow!!! This brings back a lot of memories for me, I worked and lived in Las Vegas for over 10 years. And guess what I lived and worked in the downtown area of Las Vegas. I worked at the Fremont hotel, the California hotel 🏨 and the Main Street Station 🚉. These casinos were all owned by the Boyd family 👪.
I was at Golden Gate last week, the vibe on the tables around midnight was awesome. Maybe I am colored by winning a bit but with the music and drinks it was real fun.
One thing about that casino was the surveillance from decades ago. They'd lay on a cart and scoot around in the ceiling to look down on the tables. Not sure if that is still there after renovations, but was there a few years ago.
You used to get free breakfast at the plaza with the coupon book. Also you could get two foot long chilli dogs at the end of Fremont next to the Blvd, I miss the old days there.
Yeah it's vintage all right but they pour stiff drinks there and I always did well on the Kitty Glitter slots at the Golden Gate. Nice way to spend the day!! 😎🐱💓🍸
Good morning Ruby...Here supporting your channel again...Looks like fun...like knowing the cheapest deals out there...Golden Gate hotel is super cool..🔥😇🌸🧡⭐️💙🌻💖🔥🌺Cheers, Pamela Kay
Ok im sold we're extending a trip and I wanted to do something downtown just fpr one night and I love the idea of checking out stadium swim finally. I was looking to see if you did a review cause I trust your judgment I feel like we are boujie but reasonable lol. Thanks girl!❤
Love hearing the history of the place. I keep meaning to stay on Freemont Street one of these days and still deciding where I should stay. The GG doesn't really look bad for the price.
Remember getting the Shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate my first or second year going to LV (this would have been circa 2004 or 5). Don't know that I liked it (a *lot* of thst ketchup stuff) but now that it's gone...I kinda miss it being there (sooo much of my youth trips there is now gone). They also used to have a piano player in the like the lobby or by the restaurant too for that old style historic Las Vegas style.
I love the Golden Gate, have never stayed there but always wanted to because of the history, I wish they’d open the restaurant again ate there many times it was really quaint
Agreed - for the nostalgia and history alone - The Golden Gate is worth a stay! Go with an open mind about it because the rooms are tiny! We had a fun stay there during Halloween a couple of years ago.
Good advice. The rooms are small, but as Ruby explains, this place has character. The staff is excellent. If you need directions or have a question, they go out of their way to get you what you need. The casino is fun. If you’re going to take in all that downtown has to offer, Golden Gate is a good place to be.
In 1976 I worked at the Dice Table at the GG. The big attraction was their $99 cent Shrimp Cocktail (I must of ate a hundred of them) and their Pot Pie for I think one dollar. My favorite part was Binions had $1.99 Mexican dinner special staring at midnight that was FANTASTIC. One last thing, back then we had $25 cent chips at dice table. For $20 you could learn the game and walk away with green chips if you got lucky.
I remember my first time in Vegas in the early 2000’s there was a restaurant that had been there since the mob days and it was amazing. Think it’s the one you mention that closed in 2019.
Evel Pie or Pizza Rock? 🍕
I've only had Evel pie, but it was delicious!
Evel pie!
Pizza Rock
Good Pie in the Arts District. Thank me later!
Pizza rock

Familiar…me at 18 off the bus, down to the Horseshoe and won $5 in nickels first play…back to the bus to LA from Chicago…in 1973
Screwdrivers are too slow, I generally use a hammer.
Great story and awesome memories! 👋🇨🇦
😆 😆 😆
What year? USAF? I was there in 1975 for two years
In the late ‘60s, when I was 10, my dad and I would stay at the Sal Sagev (Sal Saggy according to my dad).
Shrimp cocktails used to be a big thing in the 60's and 70's. Loved them.
I LOVE “prawn” cocktails
I still do.
LOVE when hotels incorporate the past with the new.
I'm glad you're giving these classic hotels some exposure. Thanks for the videos and keep them coming!

Gotta love the open window ventilation! 👍😊
I think you happen to have one of the best Las Vegas sites on RUclips. Keep up the great work.
Great place to gamble. My wife and I also stayed there before their renovation in the 2010’s and it was small and impressive in a good way. Loved the old style bathroom.

I won a $2800+ handpay at the Golden Gate last September on a Timberwolf Diamond slot. I had to smile a bit when I saw the machine on your video.
I love watching old Vegas from Australia. Absolutely nothing wrong with the room either. Can't wait to visit again.
Used to play blackjack at the Golden Gate all the time. It was great. Low minimums, low key and friendly. Hope renovation hasn’t changed it too much.
I Love your videos Ruby. It is informative, interesting and fun to watch ! The food reviews, the hotel ratings, even the games and facilities gives the viewer a heads up where to eat, stay and play. I missed Vegas so much, I am hoping to be able to visit it again soon. Thank you.
Ruby always walks like she’s ready to rock someone’s shit. Straight linebacker swagger
This comment made me lol
😂😂
I think she walks just fine!

What a classy video. I never go downtown and this review makes me want to go check out the casino and bar. Nicely done.
Awesome review Ruby! Makes me want to give it a try for the historic aspect of it. Thanks!
So, my mom and I found your channel this morning... I'm binge watching and I've already subscribed to your channel

I miss the restaurant inside the Golden Gate. Loved that place
I did too they should reopen it

I like that hotel, Ruby. It has an old-timey feel to it. Very cool.
Great video, thanks for showcasing this iconic bit of history. Pizza Rock has one of the best happy hours in downtown.

You to an excellent job reviewing all hotels and what they have yo offer , surprised no one did this earlier

I was at Golden Gate last week, the vibe on the tables around midnight was awesome. Maybe I am colored by winning a bit but with the music and drinks it was real fun.
Great review. LOVE the history. Thanks Ruby! CAB😍
You really made me laugh when you re-enacted ‘Electric lights by Golly and Ventilation!’… hahaha
Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers!🍾

You’re awesome 👏🏻 we have the same great taste … Vegas is the BEST!
Hey! They cleaned the pigeon shit off the picnic tables outside of Pizza Rock! 👍👍
😂😂
Nice one, very cool about how old it is! And yes, sleep, gamble, sleep, gamble kind of place
You used to get free breakfast at the plaza with the coupon book. Also you could get two foot long chilli dogs at the end of Fremont next to the Blvd, I miss the old days there.

The hotels on Freemont Stree are nicely renovated.
I am so glad that I just found you! Love watching your content!!! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for another awesome vid. Travel Ruby never disappoints. Cheers
Love hearing the history of the place. I keep meaning to stay on Freemont Street one of these days and still deciding where I should stay. The GG doesn't really look bad for the price.
I loved your humor ...."by golly electricity" you had me rolling with that and the ventilation .....you guys keep the great vegas content coming 😁👍👍👍

Another great video Ruby. I loved the history you shared about Golden Gate. :)
Great video love learning about old Vegas!
I love the Golden Gate, have never stayed there but always wanted to because of the history, I wish they’d open the restaurant again ate there many times it was really quaint
Nice - been there... in college during the 80's it was all we could afford... and 25 cent craps at the mint... looks like you had a cool stay! : )
One of your best videos !
100 and counting - congratulations in advance!
Great video Ruby! Fantastic content and superb editing!! Keep 'em coming!!!!
Love it! Also watched several other Vegas RUclips tours but I like your style ! BTW I’ve been to Vegas many times and never at this hotel.
I stayed in the room next to yours, toward Fremont St. You could tell electricity and indoor plumbing were an afterthought.
Great video, Ruby.

Triple George grill next to pizza rock is my go to. Great weekday happy hour!!
Never disappoint. Thank you!
Love the history of the Golden Gate. And,after all you're not spending alot of time in the room.😍
Stayed there a few times hit a jackpot once there too!
Love GG

Very surprised….now I have to check it out! Thanks guys!
I stayed there twice, loved it, and will be back!

1st time going to Las Vegas was back in 1996. I stayed at the Golden Nugget. Crowded and a lot of people back than compared to now.
I remember my first time in Vegas in the early 2000’s there was a restaurant that had been there since the mob days and it was amazing. Think it’s the one you mention that closed in 2019.
Leaving my comments AC. After Covid. 🤣❤🔥 Your reviews are always fun.
