Yeah, sounds about right. Doctors (especially male gynae doctors) seem to be of the opinion "Hey, if she complains about pain while we're stitching her up, just remind her she's just been through childbirth, so this should be a picnic by comparison!" Never mind that it's a *completely different type of pain,* and also humiliating in the sense that you're being treated like an object to be 'repaired,' rather than a human being with feelings!

When I had my first baby, they did an episiotomy. I had an epidural but it was wearing off and I didn't know what was going on. They stitched me up thinking I was still numb. I wasn't. I felt every tug, every pull of the thread, every poke of the needle. I think I got like four stitches in when I finally asked if it was normal to feel everything like I was. They didn't numb me, but gave me demerol instead, which didn't help. I would rather they just did some lidocaine and went on their way. Well, actually I would rather they asked me if I could feel anything first before they did any stitching. I was so young and inexperienced, I didn't know what was normal and what wasn't.

    • @Odd_Bot
      @Odd_Bot Год назад +73

Apparently it’s pretty normal. My mom shared her horrific and similar experience. She felt everything and when she voiced her pain, they told her to not overreact and be respectful to other patients.
I mean the fact that it’s not common practice for women to get numbed before an iud insertion is equally crazy.

What is wrong with those doctors?!?! So many women saying they had the same thing happen. My doctor didn't even make it in time to deliver my baby. I gave birth with my husband and two nurses in the room. The doctor showed up at 4am, NUMBED me, then did my two sets of stitches. After being woken up at 4am to come to the hospital because my doctor was on vacation, I'm sure he would've loved to go back to bed, but he still did the humane thing and numbed me first. That's just crazy.

I saw a post from an OBGYN nurse and she was saying so many moms want it because it's "natural" and while I understand on some level some women want to know exactly when to bear down and push, this RN was very empathetic and said to her patients and to everyone watching: There's nothing that makes you less of a mom for not wanting to feel the pain during childbirth. Your child will come out all the same, you'll just not feel the discomfort as much. There's no prizes for choosing pain.

Women’s pain is completely disregarded and it’s even worse when giving birth. I remember cutting my hand pretty badly and went to the ER for stitches. Mind you, it was empty. One cut looked pretty deep. The doctor didn’t even disinfect the wound and put way too little numbing in. So the blood didn’t stop and he couldn’t see how deep it actually was. It was very painful putting stitches in. Fast forward, I have nerve damage in my hand. A hand surgeon should’ve been consulted and I should’ve gotten surgery to repair the nerves.

Right? You wouldn't call getting reconstructive surgery after an accident wanting a "designer" look. How is this any different? It's a bit disappointing, especially when physicians not taking women's reproductive health and well-being seriously enough is a researched phenomenon. I'm not saying that Dr. Youn is like that, and I understand the role of clickbait in generating channel traffic, but with this particular subject the wording bothers me. Getting the reconstruction seems to be part of healing from a traumatic event, emotionally as well as physically. It's not a designer vagina (well, vulva) if she's repairing damage and restoring the original appearance.

I actually discovered that one “lip” is a lot longer than the other and overlaps, something I wouldn’t have known without waxing. If there’s any rubbing, I can develop very painful skin tags (you do NOT want to know how painful it is to have those removed). I honestly could see why adjusting that would be much more comfortable.
So, no, it isn’t always about what someone else thinks, influenced by porn, or even related to childbirth. I actually tore once not with childbirth because of this guy. It’s like pouring lemon juice on top of a paper cut, only it’s in your pants. YEOWCH.

I’m a student midwife and hear a lot of stories from clients about their previous unmedicated hospital births- nearly all of which include some type of tear and NO lidocaine used when they were sutured. I inquired from several L&D nurses the justification (all of these women were scarred as a result, hence part of the reason for their subsequent planned homebirth). The thinking is that the vast majority of women get an epidural for labor and birth and the OBs assume they are numb without checking before trying to quickly suture and get them out of L&D. Basically what I’m saying is- it’s very common and absolutely not ok.

With my second baby in December 2022, I had a third degree episiotomy after her shoulder got stuck and they had to get her out asap. I had to get 28 stitches to repair the muscle and skin incision and tears. I felt every bit of the needle and thread pulling through my skin got every one of those 28 stitches. I actually passed out after they finished from being in shock. I’m 7 weeks postpartum and the incision still hasn’t finished healing.

I've also seen physicians say it's only going to be 1 or 2 stitches and the numbing would hurt more or take longer than the stitches. Yes, the local anesthetic most often used is lidocaine which burns when 1st injected and needs a minute or two to begin numbing the area. Or if the patient had/has an epidural in place then they supposedly won't feel it. In my opinion EVERY repair should be done with local anesthetic.

I tore with my 1st born son, I was at a teaching hospital and a student was stitching me up with a doctor overseeing his work, I couldn't feel a thing because of my epidural but I distinctly remember the doctor telling the student to step aside and the doctor took over and finished up the job. I was relieved that he didn't let the student botch the repair and that the student was able to see the correct way to sew a vaginal tear, that's what learning is all about except it's a lot more high stakes when the classroom involves live patients at a hospital. Like I said I didn't feel a thing and the doctor did a great job repairing my tear, the next day however was a different story... my body felt like it had been a car wreck, everything hurt especially down there, took a few days to recover but everything turned out OK in the end, my kitty looked very nice and I had no complications when it came to being able to control my bodily functions, I was lucky because some woman do get botched and suffer unnecessarily afterward.

I have one labia that is almost completely gone, when it was stitched back up it was stuck together like a little ball and it gets irritated. I’ve thought of getting a labia plasty done to fix it and make it look more symmetrical.

I had a HUGE barthelin cyst. The size of a large lemon. Yes, big and painful. Had to have it drained, and it left me with a scar in my vaginal wall. A flap of tissue...easily palpable. I do not think another painful surgery to "repair" it would ever have been in my mind.
I am quite non sensitive to locals. It takes double what a person twice my weight would require to get a bare minimum. Don't know why this is, but I discovered this when I was a child and had to have dental work.
Had my bottom wisdom teeth removed when I was 19. The doctor didn't believe me when I said I could feel what he was doing. He tested me to prove to me I was numb. Almost jumped out of my seat. He gave me plenty more locals after that.

In going through the comments section I think I need to send my ob a few dozen roses. No epidural, no drugs, 4 hours labor start to finish, my son's shoulders were so wide he caught on my pelvic girdle and the Doc had to push him back in, cut me from cervix to vaginal opening and then sew me up. He stopped counting at 75 stitches. Still stitching. I never had any problems afterwards. Bizarre.
