Great to see a video that’s about PHOTOGRAPHY and not about KIT. I’ve just unsubscribed from most bloggers as it’s all about cameras and pixels and all that shit. Keep it going and the idea of an assignment is a great ones. Thanks.
Hi Travis, Your message resonates with so many of us. We are on your frequency. Thanks for the homework. Look forward to taking on a couple of projects in the streets of Sydney Australia.
There is a very interesting aspect about the way "The Americans" is edited that was shown to me by one of my photographic mentors, which I would probably have had a really hard time noticing by myself, and it somehow explains why the book, not just the individual pictures, is so good and stands out in the history of photography. Every picture is related to the previous one and the next one by some element. It could be the decreasing amount of people in the picture, or the inverted balance of black and white surfaces, or the object depicted being draped in a piece of cloth. That principle provides the book with a kind of free-floating structure for which it is know as a relative of the "stream of consciousness" style in literature. A kind of narrative, in the end, but an intrinsically photographic one.
Hi, Just want to let you know that your videos keep me inspired and give me good vibes for shooting film, It's strange but I replay your videos quite often just to hear you talk about shooting film and photography, ;), very welcome, and looking forward to your next talks.
Totally agree, following an assignment helps the photography and the photographer, you need to think about your pictures as a whole and not as a single work, trying to be consistent. It's challenging but meaningful, much better than producing a single image I think.
Travis, two days after watching this a great assignment fell in my lap that I might not have recognised as such last week. Looking forward to getting to work, thanks again.
Nice video. Great content and advice. I'm sick of lens and camera review videos. I tell people all the time that photographs need a place within a body of work. Otherwise they are just one offs and no one will care about them. Photographs are like sentences and very rarely is a single sentence going to captivate anyone. Multiple sentences need to be grouped together in the form of an essay or a book to form a complete idea.
Good to see you bank Travis. Your videos seem to inspire me. I would love to do an assignment. Finding the time is a problem though and unfortunately I don’t live in a town that would inspire anyone photographically. But I went to London a few weeks ago and photographed the protests which make for interesting photos. Many protests in London at the moment so documenting them would make a good assignment.
Fonejacker it sounds like you just found something to focus on. Think of what you would need to do to tell a story with five images. How could you capture the feeling of these protests in five individual images. Sometimes I approach my projects in this way to really capture images with substance. Before I shoot I even think “will this be one of the five story telling images?” Usually it isn’t and I wait. Although limited time is always a factor just remember it only takes a fraction of a second to make an image ✌🏻
ForesthillFilmLab Thank you for the advice. That is exactly what I tried to do, I took more than five photos on slide film and still not seen them myself yet. Obviously everyone else had digital cameras but who’s gonna be looking at their digital files in 50 years? But I figured protests are a great thing to document because they are very of the time politically and something that may be of interest to people in the future. I used to go London to take photos of landmarks but I think photos of people make for a much more interesting photo.
Some books I think you would enjoy (if you don't already have them) are"Pictures From the Country" by Richard W Brown and "Mountain Light" by Galen Rowell. Both use Nikon gear and Brown uses Nikon F2's.
Thanks for giving inspiration. I struggled the last few month eith my photography... To shoot with no asignments seems to waste Film sometimes. Great video!
I'm shooting all the local landmarks, historic and important places in my community to prepare and present a portfolio to the local museum. They will have these ace-quality shots for the historical researchers of the future. Maybe I can sell prints.
thanks for the update, just a question. how do you store your unexposed /fresh film? i.e. for short term, long term. thanks, maybe you can mention in your next video.
I have questions about your frankenstax and polaroid 110a conversions, are there other (cheaper) lenses I could use for the frankenstax conversion, and where can I find a 3D print file for the back of the 110a conversion? I have two polaroid 250s, a polaroid 440, an ee100 special, a pathfinder, and the 800 I really want to get these cameras back up and running so I dont just have a bunch of paper weights.
Yay good to see you back dude 👍 Yeah personal projects are the only thing keeping me interested at the moment. I find it strange though how some images become iconic, who decides this? I think like in art, it's all subjective because some of these so called masters I don't find their work strong or appealing :/
Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life that’s a great question. I don’t know what makes these greats what they are today. I feel like in a time before the internet it was up to photographers to show us another side of things. These days with so many photographers in the world I’m not sure what it would take to stand out from the rest of the pack and have “iconic” images
I am glad to see you are back. I sent you an email. I am really interested in using your lab moving forward but I have not heard back from you. Let me know if you received the email if not I can resend. Ryan
brittany myra I do have the negatives somewhere. I would have to dig them up and re scan them because there is no way the original scans still exist on my computer. I planned to include them but didn’t have em on hand
terry breedlove haha well the computer in my darkroom still worked for scanning so I really didn’t need one for anything else. It seems kinda bizarre that I couldn’t use my computer for months but it sure is nice to have it back haha
lordoftheflings haha whoa had nothing to do with my cash flow. I actually got a mouse for it but it didn’t work and I was unable to configure it because I had no mouse! Haha

You are definitely the "Go to guy" when it comes to photography... especially FILM... glad you are back... You are straight forward and factual.

I needed this rn. I lost a lot of motivation over the winter and hopefully this will help me develop a new drive.

Creativity is like breathing, sometimes you have to breathe in. If you breathe out too long you, well, expire? 🙂
great video as always! what do you think of Diane Arbus' work?
Love the Metallica analogy

I've got an idea. Yes it was an inspiring video. I'm curious as to whether you shoot color film or not?
Have you ever shot with Adox CMS 20? Or other ultra high grain films?
Now it's been 2 months again. Come back!
I am glad to see you are back. I sent you an email. I am really interested in using your lab moving forward but I have not heard back from you.
