Marines and Soldiers Agree: The M240 Is the Best Machine Gun

- On the morning of July 13, 2008, Sgt. Ryan Pitts and a small contingent of nine paratroopers were manning an observation post that overlooked a remote American base housing 48 of their brothers-in-arms in Afghanistan’s deadly Wanat Valley. The sun had yet to crest the Hindu Kush mountains surrounding the small outpost when a force of more than 200 Taliban fighters unleashed a barrage of rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun fire.
Pitts was wounded in the opening onslaught. Shrapnel peppered his arms and legs. In spite of his wounds, Pitts returned fire with an M240 machine gun, slinging 650 bullets a minute at the advancing enemy. Whenever he needed to reload the 27-pound weapon, Pitts lobbed hand grenades over the outpost’s walls. While he fought to fend off waves of determined Taliban fighters, nine of his fellow paratroopers were killed and 27 more were wounded.
Pitts survived the attack and would later be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in what became known as the Battle of Wanat. Had it not been for Pitts’ uncommon devotion to duty and his skill with the M240, the number of American dead would have been higher.

Naturally "the Marine Corps was okay with carrying the additional weight, while...." Words NEVER EVER uttered by any Marine 0331 ANYWHERE.
Not sure why this guy thinks that's true. The reason the Marines stuck with the Bravo is because the Lima variant is just hot garbage. Source: 11B who field tested them during pre-deployment NTC in 2011. We had 4 misfires caused by charging handle malfunctions in just 1 day.
😂😂😂fuck that. xtra wheight’s for A-gunners.
The old Belgian FN MAG...HEAVY as hell and just pisses ammo away! FINE, if it's on a vehicle - NOT so COOL if you've got to carry it with boots.
RAH! SFMF. GUNS UP!
@@theHardyMonster1984i didnt have one issue with the Lima in 2014
i carried one for four years in the U.S. Army. Even after thirty years, I still hear the gun fire in my sleep.
We all appreciate everything that you did for us
Well, at least your hearing seems to be ok!
Absolutely loved running the M240B. The MK48 was also a beast!
And they expect us to believe it was a fucking AR with a bumpstock…
Fr
No, they expected the dumbasses who've never fired, let alone owned, a gun to believe it was an AR with a bump stock.
I still like the M-60.....I was a Doorgunner on a UH-1 in Vietnam 1970-71 ....But Times change ....Be Safe out there.
Were you guys trained to fire in 7-9 round bursts, too? We were on the 240. Or long enough to say "die mother fucker die"
I was a GPMG gunner in the British army, with 1WFR. Awesome weapon system.
Good old Gimpy
My first AAM was for operating this weapon system for the entire deployment. It will always hold a special place for me.
I love the sound of the M240. You know that's awesome and reliable firepower when you hear that distinct rattling sound.
sounds identical to a woodpecker
Lima user here in combat. We had the change right before deployment, but it was just as good as the Bravo but lighter. Win win
For a while I used the L7A2 GPMG, the British version of this gun, and I can confirm that the thing is a beast. Our rifles may have been crappy, but this was a true workhorse, barely changed in the 65 years it's been in service.
I had a love and hate relationship with the M240. Love firing it, hate cleaning it.
That’s a hard confirm! M240B, M249 and M2. My fucking M4 Colt lower seem to always have an issue with the bolt carrier. I went to machine guns and never went back! ❤❤❤
The bolt is in the upper receiver not the lower
Yep noice M240 GPMG! Especially the M240L 💯. Hope for MK48 soon😊
I have a lot of time behind the 240 and I love it, but I really love the German MG3.
GPMG for the win!! You push the bipod up against something static and lean in and it's ridiculously accurate too :D
M60 E4/E6 hands down 🤘
The Marine Corps was NOT OK with the additional weight.
No grunt would be OK with the additional weight.
We ran golfs back in '05
I love the M240, but if I had my choice of ANY belt fed machine gun, I'd choose the MG3. Based on the MG42, but using 7.62 NATO. Lightweight, reliable, easy quick change barrels, and devastating effects. Just an awesome machine gun.
Love the M240/FN MAG! But I actually prefer the PKM if I have to carry it very far.
The 240 Bravo is the most reliable machine gun the US military has ever fielded. The Lima variant is the opposite of my previous statement.
Amazing gun! When the Navy was phasing out the M60 I was bummed that I never got to use it. Seeing all the comments here i’m glad now I got to rock the M240B.
The Negev NG7 is super light and super light.
As a chilean former serviceman, I can say the M240 is fucking amazing. It's a bitch to carry her, but the bark and bite will make any enemy keep their heads down.
the 240L is awesome
Have heard you could just do a barrel swap and change the ammo to 6.8mm ammo if needed in the future. Swedish infantry/mortar Vet.
The M240 served me well, but the features of the Negev 7.62 seem to make it more suitable for modern warfare.
PKM is awesome, too
It will go down as one of the best belt fed machine guns of all time.
PKM: are you sure?
signs if you're in the military: 1. you love and appreciate the m240/GPMG/C6 etc...
The Golf and Bravo weigh 27.6 pounds not 25 the Limas got lighter at 21 but that model is fairly recent
Fire superiority will always be king 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
There's a reason we call it "The General".
As a soldier, I used the 240B lots, you’re incorrect and need to do your research.
240L was my baby. 19D
Much better than the M60
PKM is lighter with a tripod than the FN Minimi with a bipod.
Grandpa PA always*****
0:31 what's wrong with your eyes? Why don't you see the interlacing artifacts?
goooooonss up!
These are the weapons that I got to war with
The FN MAG is the best without all the so called PIP upgrades.
Gpmg, it's a bit of an animal, the more you feed it, the angrier it gets!
The army also uses the m240 B. We didnt have any m240 L
Welcome aboard america, we’ve (the Brits) been rocking this for donkeys years.
Nothing like sending some hate with 308.
MG3 Bro
The 240 is the best
Saviers in their own right God bless you all
Saviors
It was made very well Beyonce it could also to swap the barrel use a 6 mm rounds and yeah there's really not much really to do it's just made very well not much problem the only problem is it is heavy but you get used to it anyways it's just like having a girlfriend
shooting this gun makes you hard
The fact that marines for some reason are not considered soldiers is the really interesting thing here
We are Marines.
Next time you see a Marine salute and say "Good job, soldier." Derp
Car battery gas powered and solar
2 Bat brought a bunch back from Panama didn't they? I believe they had them before any of the rest of us did.
RLTW
Trigger squeeze: Die MF die (dope)
M240bingus
New M250 looking like hold my beer though
It is MAG. And isn' t the best. The best is MG3
M249P is the way
No.
Ay first
M60e4 rivals the m240
🤣🤣🤣240 is crap
the PKM is better
I'll take the PKM over 240 any day.
