Best no nonsense, full of common sense video I have seen on test curves. Excellent advice without going too far and baffling the newer angler. Some much bigger names have made a right mess on this topic so top marks to you Joe.
It doesn’t cover factual information though? Like I can’t extrapolate from this what a 1.25lb test curve rod will offer me, or how one should balance TC with the breaking strain of line, or why 20yrs ago a 3.5lb TC rod was unheard of, or what compression is in casting terms, or actual distances achieved with different rods, or how some brands offer ‘casting rods’ like the FS Ive or the Shimano Intensity - in actual fact he’s just stated what is 100% bloody obvious to anyone that can count.
Size of fish does not make any difference bro ,you can catch 50lb+ carp on a 2.75lb test curve rod. It's really about where you fish and how far you need to cast. A 3lb test curve would be perfect for 98% of the fishing you are likely to do 👍
Still get 50lb carp on 2.75lb TC rods pick a rod that suits your fishing fast action for long to extreme range ,semi fast action for multi range ,all through for medium range fishing and if you fish a lot of weedy waters 3.25lb to 3.5lb smaller waters all through action bigger weedy waters semi fast or fast action.
Nice video joe!,,,, out of interest how would you rate the 10ft 3.5 I noticed it’s a 40mm ring so wondering on situation you would use it!?,,, I ask because I like a rod that covers most situation and do quite a bit of pva bag work and really do prefer the 10ft pack down and feel! cheers
Hi robbo. I didn't use any 10ft 3.5 rods in this video and not sure when I last used a 10ft rod. I do however own a set of 9ft 3.5 rods which I found to be very accurate at close to medium range. Going out tomorrow with them to do some solid bag fishing and im sure they will cope nicely

Very helpful. Thank you! I am in United States, so my carp tackle selection is super limited, and not many people to ask for advice
Action of rods is important too, fast action all through action and semi fast action .
great guide!!
Stiff rods for stiff fishing. That's my motto. 👍
So does size of fish not play a role. How big a fish is 2.75 generally got for the under20# 30 40?

If I'm fishing for 36lbs carp, what test curve do I need?
Also, minimum line is 12lbs. Should I go for 15?
