I love how Far Far out of his Way Shrek goes for Fiona in this Masterful sequel, it truly encapsulates how humane Shrek has become as an Ogre even before he drank the potion.
Literally he goes to Far Far Away with Fiona despite denying it and putting his foot down saying "THATS FINAL". He eavesdropped on Fionas crying feeling hurt and guilt over her sorrow. He openly accepts her fathers offer to patch things up without telling her about it. After that failed, he seeks out Fairy God Mothers help which still did not work out. So rather than giving up on Fiona and her happiness he commits Theft and drinks a Magical Potion to become Human giving up everything that he is because he loves Fiona that much. He even lets Fiona go if it meant she will be Happy.
This is why I don't accept Forever After as a sequel because Shrek all of a sudden forgets this and becomes more Selfish and Less Humane when they already established he did not want to be judged as a "Hideous Ugly Beast".
Yeah I absolutely agree, especially with the last part about forever after. I like it as a standalone movie and still think it’s better than 3, but it makes Shrek someone he’s not just for the sake of “let’s make another movie”.
DreamWorks basically told us that Shrek has become more human as an ogre than he would have as an actual human and it’s great. If he wasn’t an ogre he never would have had the opportunities to grow during the first movie. He never would have been looked down upon or had to learn to deal with humans. His effort and struggle to be normal ends up making him more human than any physical form of humanity could give him, which is why returning to ogreness at the end of the movie is easily the best outcome there is.
