its obvious you and your neighbour get on well, if he had the labour bill for that job he would have to sit down, you can see why the manufacturer dont want them back when they are fkd.
i hope he appreciated all the work you put into it

Hi, Matty: Thanks for showing us how. Whenever you see a part like that pulley, you just imagine what took place at the mower company:
Designer: "Right, let's put a nylon pulley there instead of a pot metal one...that will save cost."
Sales Manager: "Have you seen how much money we've lost this year on replacement lawn mowers? All because of a $20 part."
You definitely saved that lad a backup lawn mower.
Great to hear your DRO is on the way and looking forward to seeing that in action. Be well and see you next week. Cheers, mate.

Hey Matty. Another great video, thanks!
Mate, do us/yourself a favour please - when you are tugging at something to get it out of the chuck end, move or cover the cutting tool or anything in the tailstock in case you back-hand it when the object comes free.
I have seen two nasty accidents, including one machinist I had to take to hospital because he had driven a small boring bar right through his hand, from just this. Look after yourself mate.
Keep up the good videos please.

Bus mans holiday for me watching this one Matty. You are on my day job Turf , (no pun intended but it works) . the plastic pulleys are appalling on mowers and they always melt out from the belt when they jam up . most are made from cast aluminium and seem to last ok , that steel one will be everlasting . Another issue can be the hardness of the dog gears . newbies try to use the drive lever like a friction clutch and wear the teeth out . the fixed bracket will be fine , some use a spring but your method is the better . damn, I have my work hat on . Stopped now mate . Thanks for sharing , Cheers Ade.

    • @joedowling5452
      @joedowling5452 7 месяцев назад

Plastics technology has come a long way but there are components that it should not be used for. Plastic gears and pulleys are fine in a child’s toy but not in a case such as this. I’m guessing that the cost savings on making this pulley from plastic vs cast aluminum is very small and to me doesn’t make sense.

Gday Ade, I really don’t understand why they use plastic pulleys, I’d say cost is a big factor, thanks for watching mate

Ahh... reminds me of the days when I did lawnmowing. Good fix Matty.
I wish I could look at a bunch of dirty parts, then 'nek minit' they are all clean. I use to use petrol to clean parts, but now I use kerosene or diesel. You don't want to inadvertently cause a spark when cleaning with petrol. You can throw a match into diesel and it will just go out so that is a lot safer.

Ahh, funny this... I`ve just been making a very similar solution myself not two months ago... I haven`t posted the video, as i still haven`t finished the project, it`s still chucked up in the lathe, waiting for me to remember if i finished the shaft bore... The pulley turned out great, as did yours, and i actually set the angle by eye... I mean, come on, it`s a single V belt pulley for a mower... The main element here is the soft belt, and being half a degree or one whole off - makes little difference to the belt... The tensioner will snug it up, squish it into the groove and it will work just great even with a small error... Now, if we were talking lathe pulleys and such, sure, precision is in order, but a pulley that sees dust, grit, earth, small bits of rock and grass being churned by the belt can be tankful for your choice of material and silent on all other matters...
Interesting to see that you had a similar issue in no more than a month down the line... Also makes me kinda feel stupid for not actually finishing it and posting the video, as if i do now, it will look like an unoriginal idea... Tho, my piece is quite different, being the main shaft pulley, rather than being a gearbox shaft pulley... But i should remake that one too... Briggs really did some engineering sins with that mower... ``A honda engine, a shit mower - i don`t give a damn`` was the official approach it would appear...

G'day Matty! Nice job mate, that pulley is ten times better than the plastic shit original. I know these things are made to a price And are designed to fail just outside the warranty period but fuck me that is a piece of shit deign, well not in the manufacturers eyes, but the customers certainly. The end float you showed I think does not matter, because it only runs one way and the design of the drive gears push the shaft towards one side only when driving. If there were a reverse, then they would have to address the end float somehow. Anyway your mate has a his and hers set of mowers now lol. Cheers Matty! Sam from England

Matt, hey why didn't you just bore out the hole and sleeve it??
You could've done to large hoe plugged it , welded it then re drilled the hole.
Its only a daggy motor pulley drive.
Or am I over thinking again.

Think about the standards Matty applies to his work. Notice he even polished the outside faces of the soon to be "dirty old pulley". So do you think Matty would have been satisfied with "just" a weld up and re-bore, or otherwise a re-sleeve?

Gday, Yes I could have repaired the first one but I know its not what I wanted, I'd rather take the time to make it right from the start, Thanks for watching, Cheers
