Way back in the early 80's I was out with a mate having a few beers. He told me John Martyn was playing a gig at Queen's University Belfast later that night. So we made our way to QUB. We payed at the door and we were very lucky to get seats about 4 rows front & centre, off the stage. What a night, what a voice, what a fantastic memory. (I've never seen as many fully grown men with lumps in their throats and "I think I've got something in my eye" syndrome) I've been a fan ever since. And this song has been hard-wired into my brain ever since. Keep The Faith. 🍀
I love this because I just Love John Martyn and everything he did ! But if you wanna try another version go for Eva Cassidy version ! Awesome! Been in a JM all my llife
I was at this gig. Such happy memories. 2nd time I'd seen Big John, but 1st time with the electric guitar and full band. The whole set blew me away ... and still does
Genius is a word that is used FAR TOO frequently, for example, is Pete Waterman a genius? Exceptional creative power, is how a dictionary defines the word Genius and I think that this EASILY applies to John Martyn. You pushed the boundaries of the style of music that you played and composed!! THANK YOU for your wonderful work!
I was at Glastonbury 86, the sun was shining, the crowd were 'high' and John played a stormer of a show. Over the Rainbow was outstanding but I thought that Lookin' On was probably the best track of the day with all of the band playing at their best.
ADVANCE NOTICE TO ALL JM FANS....To commemorate the 10th Anniversary of his passing, from Dec 31st , I shall be posting a selection of his work....obviously up to a grand finale on Jan 28th.
Thanks so much, I loved this song from John ... a long time ago ... and actually searched for it on RUclips several years ago .... and then again today. Excellent, thanks !!
mesmerising...jesus this guy suffered but christ he came through big time while dragging some kind of tradgedy behind him...superb..when i wish upon a star i'll thinkof john
I saw John's performance at Glastonbury in 86 and Over the rainbow was just outstanding. There is a CD of the gig called 'Radio 1 live in concert' which also contains a few tracks from other live performances. Buy it if you can, it's worth it just for Over the rainbow alone.
I was so fortunate to see him play the 2000 Fleadh in Finsbury park. He and his amazing band had an afternoon slot and he was not on the main stage either. Nonetheless he gave a wonderful set. His most memorable moment though was showing the majesty of the great man, was how he finished the show. During the instrumental part of what turned out top be the last number (but the audience did not know this) he went back to his amp put his sunglasses on the top and surreptitiously walked off as the band finished the song (which could have been this song?). Total class!!
@brit1958dec I know exactly what you mean. He does it to me too every time I listen to this track. Genius isn't good enough to describe the man or his music.
1986 was the year my dad died. Miss him more every year that passes 🙏
Very much missed, John. A real artist.
played this at my sons funeral , god rest you john paul and god bless you big john
Still the best version. R.I.P BIG JOHN.
The crazy bastard made me cry again - I don't think I could listen to anyone else's version of that song now. What a talent!
