    I feel kinda bad when I watch these videos. Dave gives such amazing little nuggets of tips (shoulders in back pocket/breathe in through nose then mouth) that I feel like I need to pay him for all these things he's helped me with along the way.

    Watched this this a.m., now im in the gym and listening again... The reverse bands and pulling down the bar is gold. Doing it right now. Perfect for feeling exactly what you want when benching.

    Coming back to this video after a few years I’ve built up my lay training volume to every session now. It def takes time

    i always felt a difference training back and benching the next day, it always reminded me to use everything when i benched. Scot Mendelson taught me that when i benched i should have sore traps, it came to the point where i'd be using the entire body, i'd be on my toes using my calves, kickin my feet under me and contracting my hamstrings and digging in and pressing with my legs retracting the shoulder blades and contracting the traps, stabilizing with the lats and definately the brachialis and biceps and when you get in a certain position before you even press the bar sometimes you can feel it there, obviously hits the delts the triceps and the pecs. so really that's the secret to benching, looking at it as a full bodymovement. which sounds kind of funny but if i focus i can use my entire body rather then just a boring basic outlook of chest triceps front delts.

    I like to put the Mad Dog slingshot on, and just lay down on the bench, and simulate benching without the bar and just keep going to failure. Can also add bands

      I smoke a few bowls and then do this exact same thing. I'll be in the garage for hours doing it. My wife used to think it was a waste of time but now she doesn't care because she made a new friend at her work. Her and Mike go for coffee when I'm doing my slingshot.

    That really got my attention about dividing-up the vertical pulls, and horizontal pulls like that. I'd been thinking about doing that prior to seeing this. Hit it with more frequency and spread the volume out a bit. I think it's been fucking with my deadlift doing the concentrated doses of back work, less frequently.

    Interesting idea to use reverse bands and pull the bar down. How does that differ and is it better than an inverted row?

    My lats are always sore after a heavy bench day. I know they are firing correctly but also wonder if maybe they are sore because they are a weak spot?

  • @mightyquinn5135

    Ive seen how guys go.to westside and get into a group at or above their level and from doing various exercises with them Louie can tell exactly what their weak points are. For example maybe you want to be a 500lb benches but if you can't shoulder press what the other 500 lb benchers do then you know you need to improve your shoulders.
    My question is has anyone ever compiled a list of metrics that someone can use to determine if they have a weak body part? For exaample a 400lb benches should military press 200 lbs (just ex) bent over row 300 lbs, JM press 150 lb. Etc
    if you guys could put a chart like this together I think thatd be really helpful

      No because it all depends on the person. Leverages/ genetics/ strengths/weaknesses/training style will affect this massively. You get powerlifter build a big sbd but are shut at everything else. A conjugate style guy is gonna be strong as fuck at back, hammy, triceps. Someone with full body Olympic style back ground strong quads etc

    some studies show no lat activation during press, what is your opinion on that

    • @eliteftsofficial
      @eliteftsofficial  8 лет назад +14

      Can you list the study for us to look at? The one that shows zero lat activation. Can give a view on something we don't know anything about. Would rather see the study first.

      "The lats are the ultimate stabilizer in the bench"
      Where you not fucking paying attention or what? Get the fuck out of here with your studies. Bench even near what Dave's benched and see if you come back talking about studies and shit.

    • @theylivewesee1674
      @theylivewesee1674 8 лет назад +4

      Nathaniel James haha nice rage response there, I'm totally thinking that for bench press lats are the most important stabilizer

      You can bench without activating your lats, but then your using your pecs and triceps to hold.support the weight up, so you won't lift as much weight. Lat activation is using your lats, two of the largest muscles you have, to create a "shelf" to push the weights off of "Tucking your scaps in your back pocket" is a great cue, but I think "superman bending the bar in half" is even better. Either way, this also cues external shoulder rotation, which is probably the best thing you can do to not tear a pec. Curved bars, like Chris Duffin's Duffalo Bar also cues external rotation of the humerus at the shoulder joint and scapular retraction.
