I Bought The Heaviest Thing My 2023 Hybrid Ford Maverick Can Tow As My Next Project

- My 2023 Hybrid Maverick is only rated to tow 2000 lbs, so that doesn't give me a lot of room to work on towing a new project back to the house. Fortunately it's near the end of boating season and they are generally under that weight if I don't buy the first one I look at... also, I bought the first boat I looked at.
Yeah, yeah. Best day of a boat owner's life is buying the boat, then selling it. Looks like I got the first one covered. I found a 1992 Bayliner Capri 1800 with a 120 Force outboard. The boat itself has definitely seen better days, as well as the trailer. Towing with the Maverick wasn't bad, though I think I may be at or slightly over the 2,000lb towing capacity limit. I won't know for sure unless I pull it over scales. It pulled and stopped fine and really only got to 50-60% power when accelerating from a stop to interstate speeds.
I'm going to try and fix up the boat first before I decide to sell it. First step was replacing the 15 year old tires and fixing the trailer lights. I started removing all of the old stickers, vinyl, pinstriping and graphics on the hull to see what kind of damage the previous owners did. Overall it doesn't look that bad for it's age.
The motor however... The previous owner ran into something right before selling it and just sat a new prop in place. The nut wasn't even tight holding it on. The trim tab was missing and the skeg was broken. I found a new Mercury / Force trim tab on eBay and a new old stock Skeg Guard online somewhere. At least the motor isn't missing parts now. I also did a compression check. The numbers were around 125-128psi on each cylinder.
I installed an inline filter to check the fuel and I'm sure the previous owner never measured the oil in the gas, because it looks like he dumped a gallon of oil in the tank each trip out. It's probably a 30:1 mix right now.
I'll see how much I can update this vessel before end of season. Who knows, if I don't like it, I may just buy a second boat soon and make someone else happy.

I search for videos about towing a little over the max limit with the hybrid. If anyone else is wondering, I just bought a Bayliner 175. It weights 1900lbs dry weight. I have towed it 3 times with my hybrid including pulling it up a boat ramp. No issues at all. Tows it great. However, I have towed it once for 20 minutes, then two other times about 5 minutes to the ramp. I wouldn’t tow it with my Maverick for any long distance hauls. Before anyone comments, yes I know my boat is over the 2000lbs weight limit with trailer, no I don’t care your opinion.
@@andydavis6372 I'm doing the same thing with our 17 foot four winns. We keep our boat out at our camper and it's about 2 miles or so to the lake, when I bring it the 60 miles or so home we use our Explorer for that.
