This is true, but only part of the story... That's how the friendship *began* between the two after Martina came to the U.S., and they even played doubles together quite a bit. However, Chrissie has also said that because they did doubles together, she felt Martina got too familiar with her game and started beating her and Chrissie did not like that and put an end into their partnership. They further drifted apart in the early 80s when Martina was being coached by Nancy, who told Martina that she needed to hate Chrissie in order to start beating her. Those years were very tense between them especially during Chrissie's 13-match losing streak against Martina and they didn't start to mend their friendship until the mid-80s, and really, after Chrissie retired.

For all the people saying women are terrible harpies who hate each other and men are bros who love each other and want to get married because they’re such good friends, you clearly don’t know tennis. Tennis is full of players on the men’s side and women’s side who just don’t care much for close friendships with other players and it’s been that way since the start. Heck, Jimmy Connors was legendary for that, in fact not only would he not talk to you in the locker room, sometimes he would make a special effort to be nasty if you would approach him. And then there were players like Sampras who, while nice, just weren’t the most talkative and interested in being buddies except with maybe a select few. So it was then and so it is now. For example, Djokovic, while remarking on his friendships with his Serbian compatriots, noted how he is not exactly friends with Roger and Rafael. This is Maria’s perspective but there are plenty of women who are great friends with each other, like Sabalenka and Badosa or, going back further, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. It’s all about your personality and the people you interact with. You’re not going to want to be friends with everyone. Gender stereotypes have nothing to do with it.

@@paulpaulsen3357 I'm not a fan of Sharapova. She was a cold bitch when she was playing, and she is the same after retirement. But you're looking too much into the PR of Federer. The big three (just like Sharapova) earn more money through sponsorships than playing tennis, so they measure their declarations to the press very carefully. It's not like Federer was invited to Nadal's wedding. They don't hang out together - if you see them together, it's some official act or a PR event, it's not just them going to the cinema.
That doesn't mean there can't be friendship in tennis, it just means that it depends on the player. Sharapova had no friends in the field while Ons Jabeur is friend to anyone in the tour. It depends.

Many are wired differently to her and are able to leave their friendships off the court. I guess she might also feel negatively towards a friend who beat her so she doesn't want to introduce that kind of emotion.

The male players have to be friendly with each other or else they wouldn't have high-level players to practice with. The female players have male hitting partners so they don't need to have friends on tour to be successful.
